Understanding the Stihl FS90R
Engine Specifications
The FS90R is powered by a 28.4 cc two‑stroke engine that delivers 1.3 kW (1.8 hp) at 9,500 rpm. It uses a 50:1 fuel‑to‑oil mix, which is standard for most Stihl professional trimmers. The engine features a stratified charge system that improves fuel efficiency and reduces emissions, making it compliant with many regional regulations.
Key Features
Notable features include a loop‑handle design for balanced control, a solid‑steel drive shaft for durability, and a semi‑automatic choke that simplifies cold starts. The trimmer head accepts a variety of cutting attachments—nylon line, metal blades, and brush knives—allowing the operator to tackle grass, weeds, and light brush with a single tool.
Pre‑Start Safety Checks
Protective Gear
Before pulling the starter rope, put on approved safety equipment: eye protection (ANSI Z87.1), hearing protection, long pants, sturdy boots, and gloves. A face shield is recommended when using metal blades. Never operate the trimmer without proper gear; debris can travel at high speed and cause serious injury.
Fuel and Oil Inspection
Check the fuel tank for fresh, correctly mixed fuel. Stale fuel (older than 30 days) can cause hard starting and carbon buildup. Verify that the oil reservoir (if equipped) is filled to the indicated level with Stihl‑approved 2‑stroke oil. Using the wrong oil ratio or low‑quality oil leads to excessive smoke and engine damage.
Inspecting the Trimmer Head
Spin the cutting head by hand to ensure it rotates freely. Look for cracked line, missing blades, or a loose head bolt. A damaged head can vibrate excessively, making the engine harder to start and increasing the risk of component failure.
Fueling the FS90R
Mix Ratio
Stihl recommends a 50:1 gasoline‑to‑oil ratio (2.6 oz oil per gallon of gasoline). Use fresh, unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 89 or higher. Pre‑mixed fuel containers are convenient and guarantee the correct ratio; if you mix manually, measure precisely with a calibrated container.
Filling Procedure
- Place the trimmer on a stable, level surface.
- Remove the fuel cap and set it aside on a clean rag.
- Pour the pre‑mixed fuel slowly to avoid spills; fill to the “MAX” line.
- Replace the cap securely—hand‑tight is sufficient.
- Wipe any spilled fuel from the engine housing before starting.
Priming and Choke Settings
Primer Bulb
The FS90R features a transparent primer bulb on the carburetor. Press the bulb 5–7 times until fuel is visible in the bulb. This draws fuel into the carburetor’s metering chamber, reducing the number of pulls needed for a cold start. (See Also:How To Spool A Weed Eater Stihl)
Choke Lever Positions
The choke lever has three positions: Full Choke (closed), Half Choke (partially open), and Run (fully open). For a cold engine, start with Full Choke. After the first successful ignition, move to Half Choke, then to Run once the engine runs smoothly. A warm engine typically starts on Half Choke or Run directly.
Step‑by‑Step Starting Procedure
- Position the trimmer: Lay the unit on the ground with the cutting head facing away from you. Engage the throttle lock (if equipped) to prevent accidental acceleration.
- Set the choke: Move the choke lever to Full Choke for a cold start; Half Choke for a warm start.
- Prime the carburetor: Press the primer bulb 5–7 times until fuel appears.
- Grip the starter handle: Place your dominant hand on the starter grip, thumb wrapped around the handle for a firm hold.
- Pull the starter rope: Pull sharply and smoothly until you feel resistance, then give a strong, full‑length pull. Repeat up to three times.
- Listen for ignition: When the engine coughs or fires, immediately move the choke to Half Choke.
- Continue pulling: Pull the starter rope again (usually one or two pulls) until the engine runs steadily.
- Set to Run: Once the engine idles smoothly, move the choke lever to the Run position.
- Warm‑up: Allow the engine to idle for 30–60 seconds before engaging the throttle. This stabilizes combustion and reduces stalling.
- Begin work: Release the throttle lock, squeeze the throttle trigger, and start trimming.
Cold Start vs Warm Start
| Condition | Choke Setting | Primer Presses | Typical Pulls to Fire | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cold Engine (first start of day) | Full Choke → Half Choke → Run | 5–7 | 2–4 | Engine may sputter; allow brief warm‑up. |
| Warm Engine (restarted within 10 min) | Half Choke → Run | 2–3 | 1–2 | Less fuel needed; avoid flooding. |
| Hot Engine (restarted after 30 min+) | Run | 0–1 | 1 | Primer often unnecessary; choke closed can flood. |
Troubleshooting Common Starting Issues
Engine Won’t Turn Over
If the starter rope pulls freely with no resistance, the recoil spring may be broken or the flywheel key sheared. Inspect the starter assembly for damage and replace the spring or key as needed. Also verify that the spark plug boot is firmly seated.
Engine Starts Then Dies
A common cause is an overly rich mixture from excessive priming or a choke left in Full position too long. Move the choke to Half or Run promptly after the first fire. Check the air filter for clogging; a dirty filter restricts airflow and causes stalling.
Excessive Smoke
Blue‑gray smoke indicates too much oil in the fuel mix or a worn piston ring. Verify the 50:1 ratio and use fresh oil. If smoke persists after correcting the mix, the engine may require a top‑end rebuild.
Maintenance Tips for Reliable Starts
Regular Cleaning
After each use, brush off grass clippings and debris from the cooling fins, air intake, and exhaust port. A clean engine dissipates heat efficiently and prevents carbon buildup that can foul the spark plug.
Spark Plug Care
Remove the spark plug every 25 hours of operation. Inspect the electrode gap (0.6 mm) and clean deposits with a wire brush. Replace the plug annually or if the insulator is cracked. A fresh plug dramatically improves cold‑start reliability.
Air Filter Maintenance
The FS90R uses a foam pre‑filter and a paper main filter. Wash the foam element in warm, soapy water, rinse, and let dry completely before re‑oiling lightly with filter oil. Replace the paper element when it appears dark or torn. A clean filter ensures the correct air‑fuel ratio for easy starting. (See Also:How To Remove Weed Eater Head Craftsman)
Best Practices and Pro Tips
- Store the trimmer with the fuel tank empty if it will sit unused for more than two weeks; this prevents gum formation.
- Use a fuel stabilizer when storing fuel for extended periods.
- Keep a spare spark plug and primer bulb in your tool kit for field repairs.
- When starting on a slope, position the trimmer so the fuel tank is slightly higher than the carburetor to aid gravity feed.
- Listen to the engine tone: a smooth, steady hum indicates proper combustion; a rough, uneven sound signals a lean or rich condition.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over‑priming: Pressing the primer bulb more than 10 times floods the carburetor, making the engine hard to start.
- Leaving the choke on Full: Forgetting to move the choke after the first fire causes the engine to run rich and stall.
- Using stale fuel: Fuel older than 30 days loses volatility and can clog the carburetor jets.
- Neglecting the air filter: A dirty filter starves the engine of air, leading to hard starts and power loss.
- Pulling the starter rope too slowly: A slow pull does not generate enough flywheel momentum for ignition.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many pulls does it usually take to start a cold FS90R?
Typically 2–4 pulls with the choke set to Full and the primer bulb pressed 5–7 times. If it takes more than six pulls, re‑check fuel freshness, primer operation, and choke position.
Can I use regular unleaded gasoline without oil?
No. The FS90R is a two‑stroke engine and requires a 50:1 gasoline‑to‑oil mixture. Running straight gasoline will cause severe engine damage within minutes.
Why does the engine flood when I try to start it?
Flooding usually results from excessive priming or leaving the choke in Full position after the engine fires. Reduce primer presses to 5–7 and move the choke to Half as soon as the engine coughs.
How often should I replace the spark plug?
Inspect every 25 hours and replace at least once per season or whenever the electrode shows wear, fouling, or the insulator is cracked. (See Also:How To Feed Line In Weed Eater)
Is a fuel stabilizer necessary for short‑term storage?
For storage under two weeks, a stabilizer is optional but recommended. For longer periods, always add a stabilizer and run the engine briefly to circulate treated fuel through the carburetor.
Conclusion
Starting the Stihl FS90R reliably comes down to a disciplined routine: verify safety gear, use fresh 50:1 fuel, prime the carburetor correctly, set the choke for the engine temperature, and follow the pull sequence without rushing.
