Understanding Your Ego Weed Eater String

Ego designs their trimmer heads to work with specific string types and diameters, which is why using the correct replacement string is critical for performance. Most residential Ego Power+ weed eaters, including the ST1500, ST1511T, and ST1530 models, use a bump-feed system that advances the string when you tap the bottom of the head against the ground while the tool is running. Higher-end commercial models, such as the PH1400, often use an automatic feed system that advances the string as needed without user input, though some still offer bump-feed as an option. Knowing which type of feed system your model uses will help you properly wind the replacement string and test it after installation, as bump-feed and automatic feed models have slightly different testing procedures.

All Ego models use polymer trimmer string, which is more durable and resistant to breaking than standard nylon string, and is designed to work seamlessly with the feed mechanism without jamming. Most residential models use 0.080-inch or 0.095-inch diameter string, while commercial heavy-duty models use 0.105-inch diameter string to handle thicker brush and longer run times. Some Ego models also feature a dual-line system, which uses two pieces of string for faster cutting, while others use a single-line system – checking your user manual will confirm which system your model uses and the required string diameter.

When to Replace Your Ego Weed Eater String

Waiting too long to replace worn string can lead to poor cutting performance, damage to the feed mechanism, and even motor strain from overworking the tool. Knowing the signs that it’s time for a replacement will help you avoid these issues and keep your weed eater running smoothly. If you notice the string is vibrating excessively or making unusual noises while trimming, this is also a sign that it’s worn out and needs to be replaced. Common indicators that you need to replace your Ego weed eater string include:

• Visible fraying, splitting, or uneven wear on the string, especially near the cutting edge
• Poor cutting performance, requiring you to go over the same area of grass or weeds multiple times to get a clean cut
• The string breaks frequently during use, even after adjusting the feed length or avoiding hard surfaces
• The string will not advance when you bump the head (for bump-feed models) or the automatic feed system is not working
• One side of the string is significantly shorter than the other, indicating uneven wear
• You recently hit a hard object like a rock, curb, or tree stump, and the string is visibly damaged or bent

As a general rule, inspect your trimmer string before each use, and replace it as soon as you notice any of these signs. Proactive replacement is far cheaper and easier than dealing with damage to the trimmer head or motor caused by worn string.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Replacing your Ego weed eater string requires no special tools or technical expertise – most of what you need is likely already included with your tool or available at any hardware store. Before you begin, gather the following items:

• Replacement Ego-compatible trimmer string: Make sure to get the correct diameter for your model (0.080″, 0.095″, or 0.105″ depending on your tool) and enough length for the replacement (most models require 10-12 feet per spool).
• Adjustable wrench or Ego-specific trimmer wrench: Most Ego weed eaters come with a small, dedicated wrench that fits the retention nut on the trimmer head. If you’ve lost yours, a standard 1/2-inch adjustable wrench will work for most models.
• Work gloves: Trimmed string ends are sharp and can cause cuts, so wearing gloves will protect your hands during the replacement process.
• Clean rag or small brush: Use this to remove grass clippings, dirt, and old string fragments from the trimmer head housing before installing the new string.
• Optional: Trimmer string lubricant: This reduces friction between the string and the feed mechanism, helping the string advance more smoothly and extending its lifespan.

While you can use a standard pair of scissors to cut the string, a utility knife will give you a cleaner, straighter cut that feeds more smoothly through the head. You won’t need any power tools, screws, or specialized equipment for this task, which takes most users less than 10 minutes to complete once they’re familiar with the process.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Replace Ego Weed Eater String

Now that you have all your tools ready, follow these simple steps to replace the string on your Ego Power+ weed eater. This process works for all current Ego residential and commercial models, though minor details may vary slightly depending on your specific trimmer head design. Always refer to your user manual for model-specific instructions if you’re unsure about any step.

1. Prepare the tool for safety: Turn off the weed eater, remove the battery pack from the base of the tool, and set it on a flat, stable work surface. This prevents accidental startup while you’re working on the trimmer head, which could cause serious injury.
2. Loosen the trimmer head retention nut: Locate the small nut or bolt at the bottom of the trimmer head, which holds the head assembly to the gearbox. Use your wrench to turn it counterclockwise to loosen it. For some models, you may need to hold the string spool in place with one hand while loosening the nut to prevent it from spinning.
3. Remove the old trimmer head assembly: Once the nut is loose, remove it and set it aside. Next, pull the bottom spool cap off the head, then remove the retaining clip (if your model has one) that holds the spool in place. Pull the spool with the old string out of the head housing.
4. Clean the trimmer head housing: Use your rag or brush to remove any grass clippings, dirt, or broken string fragments from inside the head housing and the spool. Debris buildup can cause jams and poor string feed, so this step is critical for smooth performance after replacement.
5. Cut the new replacement string to length: Measure and cut a piece of new trimmer string to the length specified for your model (most Ego models require 10-12 feet, but check your user manual for exact requirements). Cut the ends straight with a pair of scissors or utility knife to ensure they feed smoothly through the eyelets.
6. Thread and wind the new string: Thread one end of the string through the eyelet on the trimmer head, following the path marked on the spool (most spools have arrows printed on them to show the correct winding direction). Wind the string evenly around the spool, taking care not to overlap the loops, which can cause jams. Take care not to pull the string too tight while winding, as this can cause it to stretch and break more easily; a firm, even tension is ideal. For dual-line models, repeat this process with the second piece of string, leaving 4-6 inches of string sticking out of each eyelet. For single-line models, leave 4-6 inches of string sticking out of the single eyelet after winding.
7. Reassemble the trimmer head: Place the wound spool back into the head housing, aligning the tabs on the spool with the slots in the housing to ensure it seats correctly. Snap the spool cap back into place, then thread the retention nut back onto the shaft and tighten it clockwise with your wrench. Tighten it until it’s snug, but avoid overtightening, as this can crack the plastic housing.
8. Test the string feed and performance: Reattach the battery pack to the weed eater, turn it on, and test the feed. For bump-feed models, tap the bottom of the head against the ground while the tool is running to advance the string – it should extend smoothly without jamming. For automatic feed models, the string should advance automatically as you trim. Test the cutting performance on a small patch of grass to confirm it’s working correctly.

If the string does not advance correctly, double-check that you wound it in the correct direction and that the loose ends are long enough to catch in the feed mechanism. Most issues are resolved by rewinding the string correctly or adjusting the length of the loose ends. (See Also:What To Mix With Weed Eater Gas)

Choosing the Right Replacement String for Ego Power+

Not all trimmer string is created equal, and using the wrong type or diameter of string can lead to poor performance, frequent breakage, and even damage to your Ego weed eater’s feed mechanism or motor. When selecting replacement string for your Ego Power+ model, keep the following factors in mind:

• Diameter: This is the most important specification. Using a string that’s too thick will overload the motor, cause excessive wear, and may not fit through the feed eyelets. Using a string that’s too thin will break frequently and won’t cut effectively. Check your user manual for the recommended diameter for your model – 0.080″ is standard for light residential use, 0.095″ for medium-duty use, and 0.105″ for commercial heavy-duty models.
• Material: Ego OEM string is made of durable, UV-resistant polymer that holds up well to sun, rain, and abrasion. Third-party polymer strings from reputable brands work just as well for most users, but avoid cheap, low-quality nylon strings that degrade quickly in outdoor conditions.
• Shape: Round string is the most common and works well for light grass trimming. Square or serrated string has sharper edges that cut thicker weeds and brush more effectively, but it is slightly noisier and may wear down faster on hard surfaces.

To help you choose the best string for your needs, refer to the comparison table below, which outlines the most common string types used with Ego Power+ weed eaters:

As a general rule, stick to the string diameter recommended in your Ego user manual for optimal performance. If you regularly tackle thick brush or overgrown areas, upgrading to a thicker or square-shaped string will improve cutting efficiency, but always confirm compatibility with your model first to avoid overloading the motor. Aluminum-infused string is a great option for users who regularly trim in rocky or sandy areas, as the aluminum particles help resist abrasion and wear.

Tips for Extending Your Weed Eater String Life

Replacing your Ego weed eater string is a simple task, but you can reduce how often you need to do it by following these best practices to extend the life of your string:

• Adjust the cutting length correctly: Most Ego weed eaters have an adjustment knob on the trimmer head that lets you set the length of the string that extends from the head. Keep the string length between 6 and 8 inches for optimal performance – longer string puts extra strain on the motor and breaks faster, while shorter string reduces cutting efficiency.
• Avoid cutting near hard surfaces: Hitting rocks, concrete, curbs, or tree trunks with your trimmer string will wear it down quickly and cause it to break. When trimming near these surfaces, tilt the weed eater so the string hits the surface at a shallow angle, rather than head-on.
• Use the correct cutting technique: Don’t force the weed eater into thick brush or overgrown weeds – let the weight of the tool and the speed of the string do the work. Use a smooth, sweeping motion instead of pressing hard, which reduces strain on the string and motor.
• Clean the trimmer head after each use: Wipe off grass clippings, dirt, and debris from the trimmer head and spool after each use. Buildup can cause corrosion and weaken the string over time, and can also lead to jams in the feed mechanism.
• Store your tool properly: Keep your Ego weed eater in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight when not in use. Extreme heat and UV exposure can degrade the polymer string, causing it to become brittle and break more easily. If you store your weed eater outdoors, consider covering the trimmer head with a plastic cap to protect the string from UV damage and debris.
• Keep extra string on hand: Pre-cut several lengths of replacement string and store them in your garage or shed so you can replace worn string quickly when needed, without having to run to the hardware store mid-job.

Following these simple tips can extend the life of your trimmer string by 50% or more, saving you time and money on replacements over the life of your tool.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Replacing Ego String

Even though replacing Ego weed eater string is a simple process, there are a few common mistakes that can lead to poor performance, frequent breakage, or even damage to your tool. Avoid these errors to ensure a smooth, successful replacement:

1. Winding the string in the wrong direction: This is the most common mistake users make. If you wind the string backwards, it will not advance correctly when you bump the head (for bump-feed models) or may even jam the feed mechanism. Always follow the direction arrows printed on the spool, or check your user manual for the correct winding direction for your model.
2. Overtightening the retention nut: The trimmer head housing is made of plastic, which can crack or warp if you tighten the retention nut too much. Tighten the nut until it’s snug, but stop as soon as you feel resistance – you don’t need to use excessive force.
3. Using the wrong string diameter: As mentioned earlier, using a string that’s too thick or too thin will cause performance issues. Always confirm the recommended diameter for your model before purchasing replacement string.
4. Winding the string too loosely: Loose, overlapping loops of string will catch in the feed mechanism and cause jams. Wind the string tightly and evenly around the spool, with no overlapping layers, to ensure smooth feeding.
5. Leaving the string ends too short: If the loose ends of the string are less than 4 inches long, they won’t catch in the feed mechanism when you bump the head, so the string won’t advance. Always leave at least 4-6 inches of string sticking out of the eyelets after winding.
6. Skipping the cleaning step: Failing to remove debris and old string fragments from the trimmer head housing before installing the new string can lead to jams and poor feed performance, even if you install the new string correctly. Using string that’s not rated for outdoor use, such as standard craft nylon, will degrade quickly in sun and rain, leading to frequent breakage and poor performance.

Avoiding these common mistakes will ensure your replacement string works perfectly the first time, and will help you avoid unnecessary frustration and extra work.

Troubleshooting Post-Replacement Issues

In most cases, replacing your Ego weed eater string will go smoothly, and the tool will work perfectly right away. However, if you run into issues after installation, refer to this troubleshooting guide to identify and fix the problem quickly: (See Also:How To Use The Worx Weed Eater)

• String will not advance when bumping the head (bump-feed models): First, confirm that you wound the string in the correct direction (check the arrows on the spool). Second, make sure the loose ends of the string are at least 4 inches long. Third, check that the spool is seated correctly in the housing, with the alignment tabs fully inserted into the slots. Finally, make sure the retention nut is snug but not overtightened, as this can bind the spool and prevent it from spinning. If you’ve checked all these factors and the string still won’t advance, the feed mechanism may be clogged with debris – disassemble the head and clean out the feed channel with a small brush to resolve the issue.
• String breaks constantly during use: First, confirm you’re using the correct diameter string for your model. Second, check for sharp edges or burrs in the trimmer head housing that may be cutting the string – smooth these out with sandpaper if needed. Third, adjust your cutting technique to avoid hitting hard surfaces like rocks or concrete.
• String advances too much when bumping the head: This is usually caused by winding the string too tightly, or a worn feed mechanism. Try unwinding the string slightly and rewinding it with a bit less tension. If the problem persists, the feed mechanism may need to be replaced, though this is rare for well-maintained tools.
• String jams in the trimmer head: Jams are almost always caused by winding the string too loosely, using string that’s too thick, or failing to clean debris out of the housing before installation. Remove the spool, rewind the string tightly with the correct diameter, and clean out any debris before reassembling.
• Poor cutting performance after replacement: Make sure the string length is set correctly (6-8 inches is ideal). New string may also need a few minutes of use to wear down to a sharp edge, so test it on a small patch of grass first. If performance is still poor, check that the string is wound tightly and evenly with no loose loops.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace my Ego weed eater string?

There is no fixed schedule for replacing your Ego weed eater string, as it depends on how often you use the tool and the conditions you use it in. For most residential users who trim their lawn once a week, replacing the string every 3 to 6 months is sufficient. If you use the tool daily for large commercial properties or heavy brush, you may need to replace it every 1 to 2 months. The best way to know when to replace the string is to inspect it before each use – if you see any fraying, splitting, or uneven wear, it’s time for a replacement, regardless of how long it’s been since the last change. If you store your weed eater for long periods during the winter, it’s a good idea to replace the string before the first use of the season, as old string can become brittle from cold storage.

Can I use third-party string in my Ego weed eater?

Yes, you can use third-party trimmer string in your Ego weed eater, as long as it meets the specifications for your model. Look for polymer string with the correct diameter (0.080″, 0.095″, or 0.105″ depending on your tool) from a reputable brand. Avoid cheap, low-quality string that breaks easily, as it can damage the feed mechanism and reduce performance. Ego OEM string is optimized specifically for their tools, but most high-quality third-party strings work just as well for most users and are often more affordable.

Why does my Ego weed eater string keep breaking?

Frequent string breakage is almost always caused by one of a few common issues: using the wrong string diameter for your model, cutting near hard surfaces like rocks or concrete, winding the string too loosely, or a damaged trimmer head with sharp edges that cut the string. First, confirm you’re using the correct diameter string for your model. Then, adjust your cutting technique to avoid hard surfaces, and inspect the trimmer head for any sharp burrs that may be damaging the string. If you’ve checked all these factors and the string still breaks frequently, the feed mechanism may be misaligned, and you may need to contact Ego support for assistance.

Do I need to replace the entire trimmer head if the string wears out?

No, you do not need to replace the entire trimmer head when the string wears out. The trimmer head is designed to be reusable, and replacing the string is a simple, low-cost maintenance task that takes less than 10 minutes. You only need to replace the entire trimmer head if it is cracked, the feed mechanism is broken, or the spool is damaged beyond repair. Replacing just the string will save you $20 to $50 compared to buying a new trimmer head, and is much more environmentally friendly. (See Also:Do You Need To Soak Weed Eater String)

How much string do I need to replace my Ego weed eater string?

Most Ego residential weed eater models require 10 to 12 feet of trimmer string per replacement. Commercial heavy-duty models may require up to 15 feet of string, depending on the size of the spool. It’s a good idea to buy a small roll of replacement string that contains at least 50 feet, so you have plenty on hand for future replacements without having to make multiple trips to the hardware store. Always check your user manual for the exact length required for your specific model to avoid cutting too little or too much string.
