What Is Weed Eater Line?
Weed eater line is a consumable cutting filament designed to slice through grass, weeds, and light brush by centrifugal force. The line is fed from a spool housed in the trimmer head; as the motor spins the head, the line extends outward and becomes a high‑speed cutting edge. Unlike a metal blade, the line is flexible, which reduces the risk of damaging hard surfaces such as sidewalks, fences, or tree bark. The line’s composition determines its stiffness, abrasion resistance, heat tolerance, and overall lifespan.
Primary Materials Used in Weed Eater Line
Manufacturers rely on a handful of polymer families, each offering a distinct balance of durability, flexibility, and cost. The most common base resin is nylon, but additives and co‑polymer blends create the variety you see on store shelves.
Nylon (Polyamide 6,6 and 6)
Standard nylon line is the workhorse of the industry. Polyamide 6,6 provides high tensile strength and good abrasion resistance, while Polyamide 6 offers slightly more flexibility. Both grades melt at roughly 260 °C, which is well above the operating temperature of a typical gas or electric trimmer. Nylon’s molecular structure allows it to stretch under load and then snap back, giving a clean cut without brittle fracture. Most budget‑friendly spools use plain nylon because it is inexpensive to extrude and readily available.
Co‑polymer and Blended Lines
Co‑polymer lines combine nylon with other polymers such as polypropylene or thermoplastic elastomers. The result is a line that retains nylon’s strength but gains improved low‑temperature flexibility and reduced memory (the tendency to coil). These blends often carry marketing names like “dual‑action” or “professional grade.” They tend to last 20‑30 % longer than plain nylon in mixed‑grass conditions because the added polymer reduces surface wear and heat buildup.
Titanium‑Coated and Reinforced Lines
Some premium lines receive a thin titanium nitride or ceramic coating applied during extrusion. The coating creates a harder surface that resists abrasion from sandy soil, concrete edges, and thick stems. While the core remains nylon or co‑polymer, the coating can extend line life by up to 50 % in harsh environments. The trade‑off is a higher price and a slightly stiffer feel, which may require a more powerful trimmer to spin efficiently.
Specialty and Eco‑Friendly Lines
Biodegradable lines made from polylactic acid (PLA) or other bio‑based polymers have entered the market for environmentally conscious users. They decompose faster in composting conditions but generally lack the heat resistance of nylon, making them best suited for light‑duty electric trimmers. Other specialty lines incorporate aramid fibers (Kevlar) for extreme tensile strength, targeting commercial landscapers who cut heavy brush daily.
How Line Diameter and Shape Affect Performance
Line diameter is measured in inches or millimeters (common sizes: 0.065 in, 0.080 in, 0.095 in, 0.105 in). Thicker line delivers more mass at the cutting tip, which increases momentum and allows the line to power through thicker stems. However, thicker line also demands more torque from the engine or motor, and it creates more drag, reducing rpm. Shape adds another layer of performance tuning:
- Round – The most common profile; offers balanced wear and low drag.
- Square – Sharp edges slice cleaner, especially on broadleaf weeds, but wear faster on abrasive surfaces.
- Star / Multi‑point – Multiple cutting edges increase aggression; best for heavy brush.
- Twisted / Helical – Reduces vibration and noise; cuts well on grass but less effective on woody material.
Matching diameter and shape to your trimmer’s power rating and the typical vegetation you encounter is essential for optimal efficiency.

Choosing the Right Line for Your Trimmer
Selecting line is not a one‑size‑fits‑all decision. Follow this step‑by‑step process to match line to your equipment and yard conditions.
- Check the owner’s manual. The manufacturer specifies the maximum line diameter and recommended shape. Exceeding the diameter can stall the motor or damage the head.
- Identify your typical vegetation. If you mostly trim thin grass, a 0.065 in round nylon line is sufficient. For mixed weeds and occasional thick stems, step up to 0.080 in co‑polymer or a square profile.
- Assess the terrain. Sandy or gritty soil accelerates abrasion. In those conditions, a titanium‑coated line pays for itself in longer intervals between reloads.
- Match power source. Gas trimmers (2‑cycle or 4‑cycle) generally handle thicker, stiffer lines. Battery‑powered units often perform best with lighter, more flexible lines to preserve battery life.
- Consider spool compatibility. Some heads accept only round line; others have slots for square or star shapes. Verify the head’s line‑guide geometry before buying.
- Buy in bulk if you trim frequently. Larger spools (1 lb or more) reduce the per‑foot cost and minimize trips to the store.
- Test a small section. Run the trimmer for a few minutes with the new line. Listen for excessive vibration or a drop in rpm, which signals a mismatch.
Installation and Maintenance Tips
Proper installation extends line life and keeps the trimmer running smoothly. Keep these practices in mind:
- Wind the line onto the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow on the head; reverse winding causes feeding problems.
- Leave a small tail (about 1–2 in) protruding from the eyelet after loading; this ensures the first feed engages correctly.
- Tap the head on the ground (bump feed) only when the line has worn to the recommended length; over‑feeding wastes line and can jam the mechanism.
- Store spare spools in a cool, dry place. UV exposure and extreme heat can degrade nylon, making it brittle.
- Inspect the eyelet and feed spring periodically for wear; a worn eyelet cuts line prematurely.
- Clean the trimmer head after each use to remove grass buildup that can impede line release.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even experienced users fall into habits that shorten line life or damage the trimmer.
- Using line that is too thick. This overloads the motor, causing overheating and premature bearing wear.
- Mixing line types on the same spool. Different stiffnesses feed unevenly, leading to jams.
- Ignoring the bump‑feed limit. Continuously tapping the head when the line is already short forces the feed mechanism and can strip gears.
- Running the trimmer at full throttle in dense brush without a suitable line. The line will snap repeatedly, increasing frustration and cost.
- Storing the trimmer with line under tension. Constant tension creates memory coils that cause the line to feed erratically next use.
Environmental Considerations
Traditional nylon line persists in the environment for decades. When line fragments scatter across lawns, they can enter waterways and contribute to microplastic pollution. Biodegradable PLA lines address this issue but require industrial composting facilities to break down efficiently; they will not degrade quickly in a backyard compost pile. Some manufacturers now offer recycling programs where used spools are collected and reprocessed into new line. If sustainability matters to you, look for certified biodegradable options or participate in a take‑back program.
Frequently Asked Questions
What material is most weed eater line made of?
The vast majority of weed eater line is made from nylon, specifically polyamide 6,6 or polyamide 6. Higher‑end lines use co‑polymer blends or add coatings such as titanium nitride for extra durability.
How do I know which line diameter my trimmer needs?
Consult the owner’s manual or the label on the trimmer head. Most residential models accept 0.065 in to 0.095 in line. Using a larger diameter than specified can stall the motor.
Is square line better than round line?
Square line cuts more aggressively because its sharp edges slice through broadleaf weeds, but it wears faster on abrasive surfaces like concrete. Round line offers longer life and smoother feeding for general grass trimming.
Do biodegradable lines work as well as nylon?
Biodegradable PLA lines perform adequately for light grass and thin weeds, but they lack the heat resistance and tensile strength of nylon. They are not recommended for heavy brush or high‑power gas trimmers.
Does a titanium coating really extend line life?
Yes. The hard coating reduces abrasion from sand, grit, and hard edges, often delivering 30‑50 % more cutting time before the line needs replacement. The benefit is most noticeable in sandy or rocky terrain.
Can I mix different line types on the same spool?
It is not advisable. Different stiffness and diameter cause uneven feeding, jamming, and inconsistent cutting performance.
How should I store extra line to keep it from becoming brittle?
Keep spools in a sealed container away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. A cool, dry garage shelf is ideal.
