Understanding Weed Eater String Types

Not all trimmer line is created equal. The most common categories are monofilament, twisted, serrated, and multi‑strand (also called “dual‑line”). Monofilament is a single round filament that offers a good balance of durability and cutting speed for general residential use. Twisted line adds a slight spiral that reduces vibration and can cut a bit cleaner on thicker grass. Serrated or “star‑shaped” line has tiny teeth that slice through tough weeds and light brush more aggressively, but it wears faster on hard surfaces. Multi‑strand line bundles two or more filaments together, providing a wider cutting swath and longer life, ideal for commercial‑grade trimmers.

Monofilament Basics

Monofilament line is extruded from a single polymer strand, usually nylon or a nylon‑copolymer blend. Its round cross‑section makes it easy to wind onto the spool and it feeds smoothly through most bump‑feed heads. Because it’s a single strand, it’s less prone to tangling inside the head, but it can melt if the trimmer runs at very high RPM for extended periods.

Twisted and Serrated Variants

Twisted line is produced by twisting two monofilament strands together before cooling. The resulting helix reduces line vibration, which translates to less operator fatigue. Serrated line is stamped with tiny notches along its length; those notches act like miniature saw teeth, improving cutting performance on woody stems. Both types are slightly thicker than standard monofilament of the same nominal diameter, so verify your trimmer’s maximum line size before purchasing.

Multi‑Strand Options

Dual‑line or quad‑line heads accept two or four separate strands that are fed simultaneously. This configuration doubles or quadruples the cutting width, letting you finish a job faster. The trade‑off is increased line consumption and a higher chance of line breakage if the head strikes a hard object. Multi‑strand line is typically sold in pre‑cut lengths that match the head’s capacity.

Choosing the Right String for Your Trimmer

Selecting the correct line diameter, shape, and material ensures optimal performance and prevents damage to the trimmer head. Most residential trimmers accept line diameters between 0.065 in (1.65 mm) and 0.095 in (2.41 mm). Heavier commercial units can handle up to 0.155 in (3.94 mm). Always consult the owner’s manual for the maximum recommended size.

Diameter Considerations

A thinner line (0.065–0.080 in) spins faster, delivering a cleaner cut on fine grass but wearing out quickly on thick weeds. A thicker line (0.095–0.105 in) provides more mass, which helps it power through dense vegetation and reduces the frequency of reloads. If you frequently switch between light trimming and heavy brush clearing, consider keeping two spools of different diameters on hand.

Shape and Material

Round line is the default shape; it feeds reliably and is easy to wind. Square, star, or “X‑shaped” profiles increase cutting aggression but can cause more vibration and may not feed as smoothly in some bump heads. Material-wise, standard nylon works for most tasks. Copolymer blends add UV resistance and flexibility, extending life in sunny climates. Some premium lines incorporate a small percentage of aramid fibers for extra tensile strength.

Compatibility Check

Before buying, verify three specs: maximum line diameter, head type (bump‑feed, fixed, or dual‑line), and spool capacity (usually expressed in feet or meters). Mismatched line can jam the feed mechanism, cause uneven wear, or even damage the motor by creating excessive drag.

Tools and Safety Gear You’ll Need

Changing trimmer line is a low‑risk task, but a few basic items make the job smoother and safer:

• Replacement line – pre‑cut to the length recommended for your spool, or a bulk spool you can measure yourself.
• Protective gloves – cut‑resistant gloves protect your hands from sharp line ends and any debris.
• Safety glasses – line can snap and fly outward during winding.
• Flat‑head screwdriver or hex key – some heads require a tool to open the cover.
• Clean cloth – wipe away grass clippings and dirt from the head before loading.
• Measuring tape or ruler – ensures you cut the correct length if using bulk line.

Always disconnect the spark plug (gas models) or remove the battery (cordless models) before servicing the head. This prevents accidental starts while your fingers are near the spinning mechanism.

Preparing the Trimmer Head

A clean, debris‑free head feeds line more reliably and reduces wear on the feed spring. Follow these steps before you start winding: (See Also:How To Install Weed Eater Racks On Trailer)

1. Remove the trimmer head from the shaft if your model allows it; otherwise, secure the shaft in a vise with soft jaws.
2. Unscrew or unclip the head cover. Most bump‑feed heads have a single central knob; fixed heads may have two side latches.
3. Take out the old spool and any remaining line fragments. Use a brush or compressed air to clear grass, dirt, and dried sap from the spool cavity and the feed eyelets.
4. Inspect the spool for cracks, warping, or worn feed springs. Replace the spool if you see damage.
5. Check the eyelets (the small holes where line exits) for burrs. Lightly file any rough edges with a fine metal file.
6. Re‑attach the empty spool to the head body, making sure it seats squarely.

Taking a minute to clean the head now prevents frustrating line jams later.

Step‑by‑Step: How to Put the Weed Eater String On

The following procedure works for the majority of single‑line bump‑feed heads. If your trimmer uses a dual‑line or fixed‑head system, see the next section for the specific variations.

1. Measure the line. Pull the recommended length from the bulk spool—typically 10–15 ft (3–4.5 m) for a standard 0.080 in line. Cut cleanly with scissors or a utility knife.
2. Find the anchor hole. Most spools have a small notch or hole near the center. Insert one end of the line into this anchor and pull it through until about 1 in (2.5 cm) remains protruding.
3. Wind the line. Hold the spool steady and wind the line in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool (usually clockwise when viewed from the top). Keep each turn tight and side‑by‑side; avoid overlapping or crossing strands.
4. Leave a tail. Stop winding when you have roughly 6–8 in (15–20 cm) of line left. This tail will feed out through the eyelet when you bump the head.
5. Thread the tail through the eyelet. Push the free end through the exit eyelet on the head body. Pull it until the line is snug against the spool.
6. Reassemble the head. Place the cover back on, aligning any tabs or notches. Tighten the central knob or snap the latches securely.
7. Test the feed. Reconnect the spark plug or battery, start the trimmer, and gently tap the head on the ground. The line should advance a few inches each bump. If it doesn’t, re‑open the head and verify the winding direction and tail placement.

Repeat the process for the second line if you have a dual‑line head, using the second anchor hole and eyelet.

Loading a Bump Feed Head vs. Fixed Line Head

Understanding the differences between bump‑feed and fixed‑line heads helps you choose the right loading technique and anticipate maintenance needs.

If you have a bump‑feed head, follow the winding steps above. For a fixed‑line head, simply insert the pre‑cut line into the designated slots, lock the cover, and you’re ready to go. Some modern “quick‑load” heads combine both concepts: you insert a pre‑wound cartridge that snaps into place, eliminating manual winding entirely.

Adjusting Line Length and Tension

Proper line length ensures the trimmer cuts efficiently without overloading the motor. Most manufacturers specify a “cutting length” – the distance from the head to the tip of the line when fully extended. This is typically 12–18 in (30–45 cm). After loading, start the trimmer and let the line spin freely. If the line extends beyond the guard, it can strike the guard and cause vibration or damage. If it’s too short, you’ll lose cutting width.

To adjust, stop the engine, open the head, and either pull more line through the eyelet (for bump heads) or replace the pre‑cut piece (for fixed heads). Some bump heads have an adjustable “line‑length limiter” screw on the side of the spool; turning it clockwise shortens the feed increment per bump. Make small adjustments and test after each change.

Tension is equally important. Over‑tight winding can cause the line to bind, while loose winding leads to slippage and uneven feed. The line should feel firm but not stretched when you press a finger against the wound spool.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Even experienced users occasionally make errors that reduce line life or cause frustrating feed problems. Here are the most frequent pitfalls:

• Winding in the wrong direction. The arrow on the spool indicates the correct winding direction. Reversing it causes the line to retract instead of advance when bumped.
• Over‑filling the spool. Packing too much line prevents the feed spring from compressing fully, leading to jams. Leave a small gap (about 1/8 in) between the outer wind and the spool flange.
• Using the wrong diameter. Line that’s too thick won’t fit through the eyelets; line that’s too thin may slip out of the anchor hole.
• Neglecting to clean the head. Grass buildup creates friction that wears the line prematurely and can seize the feed mechanism.
• Skipping the safety disconnect. Accidental starts while loading can cause serious injury. Always remove the spark plug wire or battery.
• Ignoring line wear indicators. Many spools have a wear line molded into the flange. When the wound line reaches that mark, it’s time to reload.

Addressing these issues early saves time and money on replacement parts. (See Also:How String Weed Eater)

Maintenance Tips for Longer String Life

Extending the life of your trimmer line reduces downtime and operating costs. Incorporate these habits into your routine:

• Store line in a cool, dry place. UV exposure and moisture degrade nylon, making it brittle.
• Rotate spools. If you have multiple spools, alternate them each season to prevent one from sitting under tension for months.
• Trim at the correct RPM. Running the engine at excessively high RPM generates heat that softens the line, causing it to fuse or melt.
• Avoid hard surfaces. Concrete, rocks, and metal edging shred line instantly. Use a blade attachment for those tasks.
• Lubricate the feed spring. A light spray of silicone lubricant on the spring (once per season) keeps the bump action smooth.
• Inspect eyelets regularly. Replace any eyelet that shows cracking or deformation to maintain clean line exit.

These simple steps can double the usable length of a spool compared to neglectful use.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with perfect loading, problems can arise. Use this quick reference to diagnose and fix the most common symptoms.

• Line won’t feed. Check for a jammed spool, incorrect winding direction, or a broken feed spring. Clean the head and re‑wind if necessary.
• Line breaks immediately. The line may be too thin for the vegetation, the RPM too high, or the eyelet burred. Upgrade to a thicker or serrated line and deburr the eyelet.
• Excessive vibration. Uneven winding, a bent spool, or a loose head cover can cause vibration. Re‑wind evenly, replace a warped spool, and tighten the cover.
• Line melts or fuses. Prolonged high‑speed operation on dense material generates heat. Allow the trimmer to cool periodically and consider a copolymer line with higher heat resistance.
• Head won’t stay closed. The latch or knob threads may be stripped. Replace the head cover or the entire head assembly.

If a problem persists after these checks, consult the manufacturer’s service manual or contact an authorized repair center.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace the trimmer line?

Replace the line whenever it wears down to the wear indicator on the spool, or when you notice a significant drop in cutting performance. For typical residential use, this is every 2–4 hours of run time.

Can I use any brand of line in my trimmer?

Most brands are interchangeable as long as the diameter and shape match the specifications in your owner’s manual. Using a line that exceeds the maximum diameter can damage the feed mechanism.

Why does my line keep jamming inside the head?

Jams are usually caused by over‑filling the spool, winding in the wrong direction, or debris blocking the eyelets. Clean the head, verify winding direction, and leave a small gap at the spool flange. (See Also:How To Change Stihl Weed Eater String)

Is a bump‑feed head better than a fixed‑line head?

Bump‑feed heads are more convenient for large areas because they advance line automatically. Fixed‑line heads are simpler and cheaper but require manual line replacement more often. Choose based on the size of your yard and how frequently you trim.

How do I know the correct line length for my spool?

The manual lists the recommended length in feet or meters. If you’re using bulk line, measure the length specified, then cut. A good rule of thumb for a standard 0.080 in spool is 12–15 ft.

Can I convert a single‑line head to a dual‑line head?

Only if the manufacturer offers a dual‑line spool and cover kit for that specific model. Attempting a DIY conversion can unbalance the head and cause dangerous vibration.
