Understanding Engine Displacement (CC) in String Trimmers

What CC Means

Engine displacement, expressed in cubic centimeters (cc), is the total volume swept by all pistons inside the cylinders during one complete engine cycle. In a two‑stroke string trimmer, a larger cc generally means a bigger combustion chamber, which can burn more fuel‑air mixture per revolution. This translates directly into more torque and higher cutting speed at the head. Stihl labels its professional trimmers with the exact displacement, so a model named FS 560 C‑EM has a 56.5 cc engine.

CC Versus Horsepower

While cc is a physical measurement, horsepower (hp) is a derived figure that reflects the engine’s ability to do work over time. Two engines with the same cc can produce different hp depending on tuning, port timing, and exhaust design. Stihl’s engineering focuses on delivering strong low‑end torque, which is more useful for thick grass and woody stems than peak hp alone. When comparing models, look at both cc and the rated hp to get a complete picture.

Why CC Matters for Cutting Performance

Higher displacement engines generate more torque at lower RPMs. This means the cutting head can maintain speed when it encounters dense vegetation, reducing bogging and the need to feather the throttle. For professional crews, that efficiency saves time and reduces operator fatigue. However, larger cc also brings added weight, higher fuel consumption, and increased vibration. The sweet spot depends on the typical job site: a 56.5 cc unit shines on large commercial properties, while a 27 cc model may be preferable for residential edging.

Overview of Stihl’s Product Lines

Stihl organizes its string trimmers into three broad categories: Homeowner, Farm & Ranch, and Professional. Each line targets a different duty cycle and price point.

• Homeowner Series – Models such as the FS 38 and FS 40 range from 27 cc to 30 cc. They are lightweight, easy to start, and designed for occasional yard work.
• Farm & Ranch Series – The FS 55, FS 56, and FS 70 models sit between 35 cc and 45 cc. They feature reinforced shafts, larger fuel tanks, and more robust air filtration for daily use on farms or large estates.
• Professional Series – This is where the biggest cc engines live. The FS 560 C‑EM (56.5 cc) leads the pack, followed by the FS 560 C‑EM (same displacement but different feature set) and the FS 560 C‑EM (a variant with a bike‑handle). All professional models share a magnesium crankcase, a high‑capacity air filter, and a tool‑less filter access door.

Understanding which line a model belongs to helps you match the tool to the expected workload and budget.

The Current Largest Stihl Weed Eater: FS 560 C‑EM

The FS 560 C‑EM is the answer to What Is the Biggest Stihl Weed Eater? It packs a 56.5 cc two‑stroke engine that delivers 3.5 hp at 9,500 RPM. The “C‑EM” suffix denotes a few key features: C for a comfort‑grip handle, E for the Easy2Start system, and M for the M‑Tronic electronic engine management. M‑Tronic automatically adjusts ignition timing and fuel delivery for altitude, temperature, and fuel quality, giving consistent power without manual carburetor tweaks.

The trimmer uses a solid‑steel drive shaft with a 1‑inch diameter, a 0.095‑inch cutting line capacity, and a 20‑inch cutting swath when equipped with the standard bump‑feed head. Dry weight is approximately 13.5 pounds (6.1 kg) without fuel, making it manageable for a full‑day crew when paired with a harness. The fuel tank holds 22.5 oz (665 ml), providing up to 2 hours of run time at full throttle.

Key Specifications of the FS 560 C‑EM

These numbers place the FS 560 C‑EM at the top of Stihl’s current catalog. The M‑Tronic system is a standout because it eliminates the need for seasonal carburetor adjustments, a common pain point on older high‑cc two‑strokes. (See Also:How To Wind Weed Eater String Craftsman)

Comparison Table: Biggest Stihl vs. Competitors

To see how the FS 560 C‑EM stacks up against the largest trimmers from other major brands, the table below highlights the most relevant specs. All figures are manufacturer‑published for the latest professional models as of 2024.

The Echo SRM‑2620 edges out the Stihl in raw displacement, but the FS 560 C‑EM’s M‑Tronic system often delivers smoother power across varying conditions. Weight and fuel capacity are comparable across the board, so the decision frequently comes down to dealer support, parts availability, and personal ergonomics.

Choosing the Right Large Stihl Weed Eater for Your Needs

Not every professional needs the absolute biggest engine. The following factors should guide your selection:

• Typical Vegetation – Thick brush, small saplings, and wet grass demand maximum torque. Light grass and edging can be handled by a 45 cc model.
• Daily Run Time – If you run the trimmer 6–8 hours a day, the larger fuel tank and lower vibration of the FS 560 C‑EM reduce refuel stops and fatigue.
• Operator Size and Strength – A 13.5 lb tool with a loop handle suits most adults; the optional bike‑handle redistributes weight for smaller operators.
• Budget and Total Cost of Ownership – The FS 560 C‑EM carries a premium price, but its longer service intervals and M‑Tronic reliability can lower long‑term maintenance costs.
• Dealer Network – Stihl’s extensive dealer network ensures quick parts turnover and warranty service, a practical advantage over some competitors.

Step‑by‑Step Selection Guide

1. Define the primary application. Write down the typical vegetation type, area size, and frequency of use.
2. Set a realistic budget. Include the trimmer, harness, spare line, and a two‑year supply of pre‑mixed fuel.
3. Visit a local Stihl dealer. Test the FS 560 C‑EM alongside the FS 560 C‑EM (bike‑handle) and the FS 560 C‑EM (standard loop) to feel the balance.
4. Compare specifications side by side. Use the table in this article and the dealer’s spec sheets to verify cc, hp, weight, and tank size.
5. Check warranty and service plans. Confirm the commercial warranty length and ask about loaner programs during repairs.
6. Purchase the appropriate accessories. A quality harness, a spare air filter, and a fuel stabilizer are essential for high‑cc engines.
7. Register the product. Registering online activates the warranty and gives you access to Stihl’s service bulletins.
8. Perform the first‑run break‑in. Follow the manual’s break‑in procedure (usually 2 hours at varying throttle) to seat the piston rings properly.

Following these steps ensures you buy a trimmer that matches the workload and avoids costly mismatches.

Maintenance Tips for High‑CC Stihl Trimmers

Large displacement two‑strokes demand disciplined upkeep to preserve power and longevity.

• Use fresh, pre‑mixed fuel at the correct 50:1 ratio. Stihl recommends its own HP Ultra oil; stale fuel causes carbon buildup and hard starting.
• Clean the air filter every 10 hours of operation. The tool‑less access door on the FS 560 C‑EM makes this a 30‑second task.
• Inspect the spark plug every 25 hours. Replace it annually or if the electrode shows excessive wear.
• Sharpen or replace the cutting line regularly. Dull line forces the engine to work harder, increasing fuel consumption and vibration.
• Lubricate the gear head and drive shaft. Apply a few drops of Stihl gear grease at the start of each season.
• Store with a full tank of stabilized fuel. This prevents condensation and gum formation in the carburetor.
• Schedule a professional service annually. A dealer can run a compression test, verify M‑Tronic calibration, and replace wear items like the clutch shoes.

Consistent maintenance keeps the FS 560 C‑EM delivering its rated 3.5 hp for many seasons.

Common Mistakes When Buying a Large Weed Eater

• Over‑buying displacement. A 56.5 cc trimmer is overkill for a quarter‑acre lawn; the extra weight and fuel cost become liabilities.
• Ignoring handle ergonomics. The loop handle suits most users, but operators with wrist issues benefit from the bike‑handle option. Test both before purchase.
• Skipping the break‑in period. Running a new high‑cc engine at full throttle immediately can score the cylinder walls and reduce compression.
• Using automotive two‑stroke oil. Automotive oils lack the additives needed for air‑cooled engines and can cause piston seizure.
• Neglecting the M‑Tronic reset. After a major altitude change (e.g., moving from sea level to 5,000 ft), perform the M‑Tronic relearn procedure outlined in the manual.
• Forgetting a proper harness. A shoulder harness distributes the 13.5 lb weight across the torso, preventing back strain during long shifts.

Avoiding these pitfalls saves money, reduces downtime, and extends the life of the equipment.
