Understanding Your Weed Eater
Before you begin, it helps to know the basic components of your trimmer. Most models share a motor, a shaft, a cutting head, and a spool that holds the line. The way the line feeds—whether it’s a bump‑feed, automatic feed, or fixed‑line head—affects how you load the string.
Types of Weed Eaters
Gas‑powered units deliver high torque for thick brush, while electric corded models offer consistent power for smaller yards. Battery‑operated trimmers provide portability with less vibration. Each type may use a slightly different spool design, so consult the owner’s manual for specifics.
String Head Types
Common heads include the single‑line bump head, dual‑line bump head, and fixed‑line head. Bump heads release line when you tap the head on the ground; automatic heads advance line with each trigger pull; fixed heads require manual line replacement. Knowing which head you have determines the winding technique.
Choosing the Right String
Not all trimmer line is created equal. Diameter, shape, and material all influence cutting performance and durability.
Diameter and Shape
Line diameters typically range from 0.065 in (1.65 mm) for light grass to 0.105 in (2.67 mm) for heavy weeds. Round line is the most common and works well for general use. Twisted, serrated, or star‑shaped lines cut more aggressively and resist wear, making them ideal for tough vegetation. (See Also:How To Change Weed Eater Line Ryobi)
Material Options
Standard nylon line is affordable and flexible. Co‑polymer blends add abrasion resistance, while reinforced lines with a core of aluminum or titanium provide extra strength for commercial use. Choose a material that matches the intensity of your typical jobs.
Tools and Safety Gear
Gather the following before you start: the correct replacement line, a pair of gloves, safety glasses, and a clean work surface. If your model requires a screwdriver or Allen wrench to open the spool, have those ready. Always disconnect the spark plug (gas) or unplug the unit (electric) before servicing.
Step-by-Step Guide to Stringing Your Weed Eater
Follow these ordered steps to load new line correctly. The process is similar for most bump‑feed heads, but always verify with your manual.
- Power off and secure the trimmer. Remove the spark plug wire or unplug the unit. Lay the trimmer on a stable surface with the head facing up.
- Remove the spool. Press the release tabs or unscrew the cap, then pull the spool out of the head housing.
- Clean the spool and head. Use a brush or compressed air to clear grass clippings, dirt, and old line fragments. A clean spool prevents feeding problems.
- Measure the new line. Cut two equal lengths (usually 10–12 ft each) for dual‑line heads, or a single length for single‑line heads. Refer to the manual for exact length.
- Insert the line into the anchor holes. Most spools have two opposite holes. Push one end of each line into a hole until it seats firmly.
- Wind the line evenly. Turn the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool (usually clockwise). Keep tension consistent; avoid overlapping or crossing the lines.
- Leave the proper tail length. Stop winding when about 6 in of line remain free on each side. These tails will feed out during operation.
- Reinstall the spool. Place the spool back into the head, ensuring the tails exit through the eyelets. Snap the cap or tighten the retaining screw.
- Test the feed. Reconnect power, start the trimmer, and gently tap the head on the ground (bump feed) or pull the trigger (auto feed). The line should extend smoothly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Over‑winding the spool. Too much line causes jams and reduces cutting efficiency.
- Using the wrong diameter. A line that’s too thick can stall the motor; too thin wears out quickly.
- Ignoring the winding direction. Winding opposite the arrow leads to line feeding backward or not at all.
- Skipping the cleaning step. Debris left in the head creates friction and premature line breakage.
- Not securing the tails. Loose tails can snag on the guard or get pulled into the motor housing.
Tips and Best Practices
- Store extra line in a cool, dry place to prevent brittleness.
- Replace line before it wears down to the core; a fresh line cuts cleaner and reduces engine load.
- For heavy brush, consider a serrated or star‑shaped line to improve cutting speed.
- Periodically lubricate the spool shaft with a light machine oil to keep the feed mechanism smooth.
- Keep a spare spool pre‑wound for quick swaps during large jobs.
Maintenance After Stringing
After you’ve successfully loaded new line, a few quick checks keep the trimmer running smoothly. Inspect the guard for cracks, tighten any loose bolts, and verify that the line feeds freely without binding. Clean the air filter (gas models) or the cooling vents (electric models) to maintain optimal airflow. Regularly sharpen or replace the blade on models that use a metal blade in addition to line.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
- Line won’t feed. Check for tangled line, incorrect winding direction, or a worn feed spring.
- Line breaks frequently. Ensure you’re using the correct diameter and that the line isn’t rubbing against the guard.
- Excessive vibration. Verify the spool is seated evenly and the head isn’t damaged.
- Engine stalls under load. A line that’s too thick or a clogged air filter can cause this; adjust accordingly.
| Line Type | Diameter (in) | Best For | Durability |
|---|---|---|---|
| Round Nylon | 0.065–0.080 | Light grass, edging | Moderate |
| Twisted / Serrated | 0.080–0.095 | Thick weeds, light brush | High |
| Star‑Shaped Co‑polymer | 0.095–0.105 | Heavy brush, commercial use | Very High |
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I replace the trimmer line?
Replace the line whenever it wears down to less than half its original diameter or when you notice reduced cutting performance. For typical residential use, this may be every 2–4 weeks during the growing season.
Can I use any brand of line in my weed eater?
Most brands are compatible as long as the diameter and shape match the specifications in your owner’s manual. Using the manufacturer’s recommended line ensures optimal feed and longevity. (See Also:How To Restring A Single Spool Weed Eater)
Why does my line keep getting stuck in the head?
Common causes include over‑winding, winding in the wrong direction, or debris inside the spool housing. Clean the head thoroughly and re‑wind following the arrow direction.
Is it better to use a dual‑line head?
Dual‑line heads cut a wider swath and can handle thicker growth more efficiently, but they consume line faster. Choose based on the typical vegetation you encounter.
How do I know which way to wind the line?
Look for an arrow molded on the spool or printed on the head housing. Wind the line in the direction of that arrow; winding opposite will cause the line to feed backward or jam. (See Also:How To Replace A Weed Eater Primer Bulb)
