Why Winterizing Your Hunter Sprinkler System Matters

Water expands when it freezes, and this expansion can wreak havoc on your sprinkler system. Hunter sprinkler systems are known for their durability and reliability, but they are not immune to the destructive forces of winter frost. When water remains trapped inside pipes, valves, and sprinkler heads during freezing temperatures, it can cause cracks, bursts, and permanent damage to components that are costly to replace.

Winterization removes residual water from your system before temperatures drop below freezing. This process involves shutting off the water supply, draining as much water as possible from the lines, and using compressed air to force out any remaining moisture. Taking these steps seriously can save you hundreds or even thousands of dollars in repair costs come springtime.

Beyond financial savings, proper winterization extends the overall lifespan of your irrigation system. You avoid the frustration of discovering broken sprinkler heads or non-functional zones when you turn your system back on in the spring. It also prevents water waste from leaking pipes that may have gone unnoticed beneath the ground.

If you have ever searched for how to winterize Hunter sprinkler system Youtube tutorials, you have already recognized the importance of this task. The videos available online demonstrate that winterization is a manageable project for most homeowners willing to follow clear instructions.

Tools and Supplies You Will Need

Before you begin the winterization process, gather all the necessary tools and supplies. Having everything ready in advance prevents frustrating interruptions and keeps the job moving smoothly. Most of these items are affordable and can be found at any hardware store or home improvement center.

• Shut-off valve wrench: A sturdy wrench to turn off the main water supply to your irrigation system.
• Compressed air compressor: This is the most critical piece of equipment. You will need a compressor capable of delivering at least 50 cubic feet per minute (CFM) with a minimum tank size of 20 gallons.
• Air hose adapter: An adapter that connects your compressor to your sprinkler system’s blowout port.
• Sprinkler blowout kit: Some Hunter systems include a dedicated blowout fitting. If yours does not, you may need to purchase one separately.
• Teflon tape: Useful for ensuring tight, leak-free connections on threaded fittings.
• Bucket and towels: For catching drips and cleaning up as you work.
• Gloves and safety glasses: Protect your hands and eyes during the process, especially when working with compressed air.

While this list may seem lengthy, most homeowners already own several of these items. The compressor is typically the biggest investment, but renting one from a local equipment store is a perfectly viable option if you do not want to purchase one.

Step-by-Step Guide to Winterize Your Hunter Sprinkler System

Follow these steps carefully to winterize your Hunter sprinkler system effectively. This process works for most Hunter models, including the popular Hunter PGP, MP Rotator, and Rain Bird-compatible installations.

Step 1: Shut Off the Water Supply

Locate the main shut-off valve for your irrigation system. This valve is typically found near your water meter, in a basement, or in an outdoor utility box. Turn the valve clockwise to stop water flow to the sprinkler system. Once closed, turn on a nearby faucet or sprinkler head to relieve any remaining pressure in the lines.

Step 2: Turn Off the Controller

Go to your Hunter sprinkler controller and switch it off. Some controllers have a “rain mode” or “off” setting that disables all watering schedules without erasing your programmed settings. This step prevents the system from accidentally activating while you are working on it.

Step 3: Drain the System

Open all manual drain valves located at low points in your system, such as the ends of lateral lines and near valve boxes. Allow gravity to drain as much water as possible from the pipes. If your system has an automatic drain valve, confirm that it is functioning properly. Leave all drains open until you are ready to blow out the lines with air.

Step 4: Connect the Air Compressor

Attach your air hose to the blowout port or the furthest sprinkler head in your system. If you are using a dedicated blowout fitting, connect the compressor to that fitting. Set your compressor pressure to a safe level, generally between 20 and 50 PSI for residential systems. Never exceed 80 PSI, as this can damage fittings and sprinkler heads.

Step 5: Blow Out the Lines

Turn on the compressor and allow air to push water out of the system. Start with the zone farthest from the compressor and work your way to the closest zone. Open each zone valve briefly, about 30 seconds at a time, to allow air to circulate through the pipes. Listen for water being pushed out and continue until you hear only air. Repeat this process for every zone in your system.

Step 6: Protect Exposed Components

After blowing out the lines, cover any exposed backflow preventers, valves, or pipes above ground with insulating covers or foam pipe insulation. Hunter sprinkler systems often have above-ground components that are vulnerable to freezing. Commercial valve box covers or even old towels wrapped in plastic bags can provide temporary protection. Finding the Right Winterization Video on YouTube

YouTube is an invaluable resource for visual learners who want to see the winterization process demonstrated in real time. Searching for how to winterize Hunter sprinkler system Youtube will return dozens of results, but not all videos are created equal. Here are tips for finding the most helpful content.

First, look for videos posted by licensed irrigation professionals or reputable home improvement channels. These creators tend to provide accurate, safety-conscious guidance. Channels that specialize in landscaping, irrigation, or home maintenance are generally more reliable than general entertainment channels.

Second, check the video description and comments section. Viewers often leave feedback about whether the instructions were clear, whether any steps were missed, or whether the advice applied to their specific situation. A video with numerous positive comments from homeowners who successfully winterized their systems is a strong indicator of quality content.

Third, pay attention to the production quality and clarity of instruction. A well-lit, well-edited video with close-up shots of each step will teach you far more effectively than a shaky, poorly narrated recording. Look for videos that show the actual connection points, valve locations, and compressor settings relevant to Hunter sprinkler systems specifically.

Fourth, consider watching multiple videos before you begin. Different creators may highlight different aspects of the process or address system configurations you have not considered. Combining information from several high-quality videos gives you a more complete understanding of the task ahead.

Key Hunter Sprinkler Components That Need Protection

Not all parts of your Hunter sprinkler system are equally vulnerable to winter damage. Some components require more attention than others during the winterization process. Understanding which parts need the most care helps you allocate your time and effort effectively.

Valves and Controllers

Hunter sprinkler valves contain internal mechanisms that can crack when water freezes inside them. Above-ground valve boxes are especially susceptible. Ensure that all valve boxes are sealed properly and insulated against cold air infiltration. Your Hunter controller should be stored indoors if possible, or at minimum protected from moisture and temperature extremes.

Sprinkler Heads

Pop-up sprinkler heads, including the widely used Hunter PGP and MP Rotator models, can be damaged if water remains in the risers or nozzles. Blowing out the system with compressed air removes this residual moisture. Pay special attention to heads installed in low-lying areas where water tends to collect.

Backflow Preventer

The backflow preventer is one of the most critical components to protect. This device prevents contaminated water from flowing back into your home’s water supply. If water freezes inside the backflow preventer, it can crack the body or damage the internal check valves, creating a potential safety hazard. Insulate this component thoroughly and verify that all drain valves are open before freezing temperatures arrive.

DIY Winterization vs Professional Service

Many homeowners wonder whether they should winterize their Hunter sprinkler system themselves or hire a professional. Both options have distinct advantages and disadvantages. The comparison table below outlines the key differences to help you make an informed decision.

For most homeowners with a basic Hunter sprinkler system, DIY winterization is a perfectly reasonable option. However, if you have a large or complex irrigation system, or if you have never performed this task before, hiring a professional for the first year can provide peace of mind and serve as a learning experience for future DIY attempts.

Tips and Best Practices for Winterization

Maximize the effectiveness of your winterization efforts with these proven tips and best practices.

• Timing is critical: Perform winterization before the first hard freeze in your area. Waiting too long risks sudden temperature drops that can freeze water in your system without warning. In most northern regions, this means completing the process by late October or early November.
• Do not skip the air blowout: Simply draining your system is not enough. Gravity alone cannot remove all water from every pipe and fitting. Compressed air is essential for forcing moisture out of the lines and sprinkler heads.
• Use the correct air pressure: Stick to 20-50 PSI for residential Hunter sprinkler systems. Excessive pressure can pop sprinkler heads, blow out fittings, or damage the compressor itself. Start low and increase gradually if needed.
• Label your zones: If you have multiple zones, label each one clearly at the valve box. This makes it easier to systematically blow out each zone without skipping any areas.
• Reinstall controller batteries: If your Hunter controller uses batteries, remove them during winter storage to prevent corrosion. Reinstall fresh batteries when you reactivate the system in spring.
• Inspect sprinkler heads in spring: After winter, walk your entire yard and check every sprinkler head for damage. Replace any cracked or malfunctioning heads before running the system.
• Watch supplementary videos: After completing your winterization, search for how to winterize Hunter sprinkler system Youtube follow-up videos to verify you did not miss any important steps. Many creators offer spring check-up videos as well.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During Winterization

Even well-intentioned homeowners can make mistakes during the winterization process. Being aware of these common errors helps you avoid them entirely.

Forgetting to Fully Drain the System

One of the most frequent errors is assuming that turning off the water and opening a few drains is sufficient. Residual water trapped in low spots, bends, and risers can still freeze and cause damage. Always follow up with a thorough compressed air blowout to ensure all moisture is expelled. Using Too Much Air Pressure

Some homeowners crank the compressor to maximum pressure, believing higher pressure means a more thorough blowout. This is dangerous and counterproductive. Excessive pressure can rupture pipes, damage valve internals, and even cause injury from flying fittings. Always follow manufacturer guidelines and start at the lowest effective pressure.

Ignoring Above-Ground Components

Underground pipes benefit from the insulating effect of the surrounding soil, but above-ground components like backflow preventers, valves, and exposed risers are directly exposed to freezing air. Failing to insulate these components is one of the leading causes of winter sprinkler system damage.

Leaving the Controller Active

Forgetting to turn off the controller or accidentally programming a watering cycle during winter can cause the system to activate on a cold night, watering frozen ground and potentially causing ice damage to your lawn and landscaping. Always confirm the controller is in the off position before winter sets in.

Procrastinating Until It Is Too Late

Perhaps the most damaging mistake of all is waiting until the first frost to start winterization. Ideally, you should complete the process well in advance of freezing temperatures. Rushing the job in cold weather makes it harder to work comfortably and increases the risk of errors.

When to Call a Professional

While DIY winterization is achievable for most homeowners, certain situations warrant professional assistance. If your Hunter sprinkler system has multiple zones covering a large property, a professional can complete the job more efficiently and thoroughly. Homes with complex irrigation layouts, drip irrigation zones, or custom Hunter accessories may also benefit from expert handling.

If you encounter any signs of existing damage, such as leaking valves, cracked pipes, or sprinkler heads that do not retract properly, it is wise to have a professional inspect and repair these issues before winterization begins. Attempting to winterize a system with pre-existing problems can worsen those issues and create new points of failure.

Additionally, if you feel uncomfortable operating compressed air equipment or are unsure about locating all the drain points in your system, hiring a professional eliminates the risk of costly mistakes. The investment of $100 to $250 for professional winterization is small compared to the potential cost of repairing a frozen and burst irrigation system.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should I Winterize My Hunter Sprinkler System?

You should winterize your Hunter sprinkler system once per year, ideally before the first hard freeze in your region. Annual winterization ensures that residual water is fully removed from the system every year, providing consistent protection against freeze damage. Skipping even a single year can result in costly repairs.

Can I Use a Tire Inflator Compressor Instead of an Air Compressor?

It is not recommended. Tire inflators typically deliver high pressure at very low volume, which is the opposite of what you need for sprinkler blowouts. You need a compressor that provides moderate pressure (20-50 PSI) with a high volume of air (at least 50 CFM). Using the wrong type of compressor can damage your system and will not effectively remove all moisture from the lines.

What Temperature Is Too Cold for Sprinkler Systems?

Any temperature at or below 32 degrees Fahrenheit (0 degrees Celsius) poses a risk to an unwinterized sprinkler system. However, the danger increases significantly when temperatures remain below freezing for extended periods. Even a single night of hard freezing can cause damage if water remains trapped in the system. This is why winterization should be completed before temperatures consistently drop below freezing. (See Also:How To Shut Off One Sprinkler Head)

How Long Does the Winterization Process Take?

For a typical residential Hunter sprinkler system with 4 to 6 zones, the winterization process usually takes between 30 minutes and one hour. Larger properties with more zones or complex layouts may take up to two hours. Watching a how to winterize Hunter sprinkler system Youtube video beforehand can help you work more efficiently by understanding the process in advance.

Is It Necessary to Winterize if I Live in a Mild Climate?

Even in mild climates, it is wise to winterize your sprinkler system if temperatures occasionally drop below freezing. Many regions experience unexpected cold snaps that can be hard on irrigation systems. If you live in a consistently warm climate where temperatures never approach freezing, you may be able to skip winterization, but it is still good practice to drain the system periodically to prevent mineral buildup and corrosion.
