What Is an Above Ground Sprinkler System?
An above ground sprinkler system consists of portable or semi-permanent piping, sprinkler heads, timers, and connectors that deliver water directly onto lawns, gardens, or landscapes without burying the infrastructure underground. The system typically connects to a standard outdoor faucet or spigot and uses household water pressure to operate.
These systems come in several forms. Portable sprinklers sit directly on the lawn and spray water in a fixed arc or pattern. Oscillator sprinklers glide back and forth across the grass, mimicking rainfall. More complex above ground setups use modular piping networks with multiple sprinkler heads, pressure regulators, and programmable timers to cover larger areas efficiently.
The defining characteristic of any above ground sprinkler system is that its components remain visible and accessible. This means you can see where water flows, easily move parts around, and perform maintenance without digging or excavation.
How It Works
How It Works
An above ground sprinkler system relies on standard household water pressure to push water through a series of connected pipes and out of sprinkler heads. The basic process begins when water flows from your outdoor faucet into the main supply line. From there, the water travels through distribution pipes that branch out to individual sprinkler heads positioned across your lawn or garden.
Each sprinkler head contains a mechanism that breaks the water stream into small droplets, creating a spray pattern that mimics natural rainfall. Some heads rotate automatically, while others release water in a fixed arc. The spacing and positioning of these heads determine how evenly water covers the area.
Timers and automated controllers can be added to regulate when and how long the system runs. These devices connect between the faucet and the main pipe, allowing you to program watering schedules based on your lawn’s needs, local weather patterns, and water restrictions.
The simplicity of this design means installation usually requires no special tools or professional help. Most systems use standard garden hose threads and quick-connect fittings that screw together by hand.
Components of an Above Ground System
Every above ground sprinkler system shares several core components, though the exact configuration depends on the size and complexity of your setup.
- Main Supply Line: This is typically a garden hose or larger diameter pipe that carries water from your faucet to the rest of the system. Thicker hoses reduce pressure loss over long distances.
- Distribution Pipes: These branch off from the main line and run to individual sprinkler heads. They may be additional hoses, rigid plastic tubing, or modular pipe sections.
- Sprinkler Heads: Available in various spray patterns including full circle, half circle, and oscillating designs. Some are fixed in place, while others rotate or oscillate automatically.
- Timers and Controllers: Optional devices that automate watering schedules. Mechanical timers use simple clockwork mechanisms, while digital versions offer more precise programming options.
- Pressure Regulators: These maintain consistent water pressure throughout the system, preventing misting at some heads and weak flow at others.
- Filters: Installed to catch debris and prevent clogging of sprinkler heads, especially important when using well water or water with high sediment content.
- Stakes and Brackets: Used to secure hoses and pipes in place so they do not shift during operation or get damaged by foot traffic.
- Faucet Splitters: Allow you to connect multiple systems or accessories to a single outdoor spigot.

Advantages of Above Ground Systems
The benefits of above ground sprinkler systems make them an attractive option for many situations.
Cost Effectiveness
The most immediate advantage is affordability. A basic above ground system can cost as little as $50 for a simple oscillating sprinkler, while more elaborate setups with timers and multiple heads rarely exceed $500. In contrast, professional underground systems often start at $1,500 and can reach several thousand dollars depending on property size.
Ease of Installation
Installation requires no special skills or tools. Most systems attach directly to an outdoor faucet using standard garden hose threads. You simply lay out the hoses, position the sprinkler heads, and turn on the water. No trenching, plumbing modifications, or permits are needed.
Portability and Flexibility
Because nothing is permanently fixed, you can move the entire system as needed. Need to water a different part of your yard? Simply relocate the hoses and heads. Moving to a new home? Take the system with you. Renting a property? Use the system without making permanent changes.
Easy Maintenance
All components remain visible and accessible. If a sprinkler head clogs, you can see it immediately and clear the blockage. If a hose develops a leak, you can spot it and replace just that section. Winterizing involves draining water and storing components indoors, which is far simpler than blowing out an underground system.
No Landscape Disruption
You do not need to dig up existing lawns, navigate around tree roots, or worry about damaging underground utilities. This makes above ground systems ideal for established landscapes, vegetable gardens, and temporary growing areas.
Disadvantages of Above Ground Systems
While above ground sprinkler systems offer many benefits, they also come with notable limitations.
Visual Impact
Hoses, pipes, and sprinkler heads remain visible during operation. This can detract from the appearance of your landscape, especially if aesthetics are a priority for your property.
Limited Coverage Area
Above ground systems work well for small to medium-sized areas but struggle to efficiently water large properties. Extending coverage requires additional hoses, splitters, and sprinkler heads, which can become cumbersome and reduce water pressure.
Vulnerability to Damage
Exposed components face greater risks from weather, foot traffic, lawn mowers, and pets. Hoses can crack in freezing temperatures, sprinkler heads can break if stepped on, and UV exposure degrades plastic parts over time.
Operational Inconvenience
Someone must manually move sprinkler heads to ensure even coverage across larger areas. This can be time-consuming and easy to forget, leading to uneven watering and potential plant stress. (See Also:How To Locate Sprinkler Solenoid)
Less Automation
While timers are available, above ground systems generally lack the sophisticated automation features found in underground installations. Smart controllers, weather sensors, and zone-based programming are more challenging to implement.
Installation Step-by-Step
Installing an above ground sprinkler system is straightforward, but following a systematic approach ensures optimal performance and coverage.
Step 1: Assess Your Water Source and Pressure
Check your outdoor faucet’s water pressure and flow rate. Most above ground systems require between 30 and 60 PSI. If pressure is too low, consider a pump booster. If it is too high, install a pressure regulator to protect delicate components.
Step 2: Map Your Watering Area
Walk through the space you want to irrigate and identify obstacles like trees, buildings, and slopes. Sketch a rough layout showing where water needs to reach and where sprinkler heads should be positioned.
Step 3: Calculate Pipe Lengths and Head Spacing
Determine how much hose or pipe you need to connect your faucet to each sprinkler head location. Plan for standard head spacing of 15 to 30 feet depending on your sprinkler type. Too wide and you get dry spots; too close and you risk overwatering.
Step 4: Select Your Components
Choose sprinkler heads that match your area size and shape. Oscillating sprinklers work well for rectangular lawns, while rotating heads are better for irregular spaces. Add a timer if you want automated scheduling.
Step 5: Lay Out the System
Connect the main supply line to your faucet. Run distribution pipes or hoses to each sprinkler head location. Use stakes to secure hoses in place. Position heads to avoid spraying buildings, walkways, or non-target areas.
Step 6: Test and Adjust
Turn on the water and observe coverage patterns. Adjust head positions and spray angles to eliminate dry spots and puddling. Check for leaks at all connection points and tighten as needed.
Step 7: Secure and Finalize
Once coverage is satisfactory, stake down all hoses permanently. Install any remaining timers or controllers. Create a simple map of your layout for future reference.
Planning Your System
Effective planning prevents common problems and ensures your system meets your watering needs.
Measure Your Space
Accurately measure the dimensions of your lawn or garden area. This helps you determine how many sprinkler heads you need and what spray patterns will work best.
Understand Your Soil Type
Sandy soil absorbs water quickly and may need more frequent, shorter watering sessions. Clay soil holds water longer but is prone to runoff if watered too heavily. Adjust your sprinkler timing accordingly.
Identify Sun and Shade Zones
Areas with full sun exposure lose moisture faster and need more water. Shaded areas require less irrigation. Position sprinkler heads to account for these differences.
Check Local Water Restrictions
Many municipalities impose watering schedules or bans during dry periods. Choose a system that allows you to comply with these regulations, such as one with a programmable timer.
Consider Future Changes
If you plan to expand your garden, add a deck, or change your landscape design, choose a flexible system that can adapt to these modifications.
Maintenance Tips and Best Practices
Regular maintenance keeps your above ground sprinkler system running efficiently and extends its lifespan.
Weekly Checks
Walk your system after each use to look for leaks, clogged heads, or displaced hoses. Clear debris from sprinkler heads and ensure all connections remain tight.
Seasonal Tasks
In spring, inspect all hoses for winter damage and replace cracked or brittle sections. In fall, drain all water from hoses and store components indoors before the first freeze.
Clean Filters Regularly
If your system includes filters, clean or replace them monthly during peak growing season. This prevents clogging and maintains consistent water flow.
Monitor Water Pressure
Fluctuating pressure can cause uneven watering. Install a pressure gauge to monitor changes and address issues promptly.
Store Properly During Winter
Drain all water from hoses, sprinkler heads, and timers. Coil hoses neatly and store them in a dry, frost-free location. This prevents cracking and extends component life.
Rotate Sprinkler Heads
To prevent wear patterns in your lawn, periodically move sprinkler heads to different positions. This promotes even grass growth and prevents compaction. (See Also:How To Replace Sprinkler Head Rain Bird)
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even experienced users make mistakes that reduce system effectiveness and increase maintenance costs.
Overwatering
Setting timers for too long or running the system too frequently leads to waterlogged soil, disease problems, and wasted resources. Most lawns need only one inch of water per week, including rainfall.
Poor Head Placement
Positioning sprinkler heads too far apart creates dry spots. Placing them too close causes runoff and puddling. Aim for heads that overlap their spray patterns by about 30 percent.
Ignoring Pressure Issues
Using too many sprinkler heads on a single line reduces pressure at each head, resulting in poor coverage. Check your system’s GPM (gallons per minute) rating and stay within safe limits.
Not Securing Hoses
Unsecured hoses shift during operation, creating uneven coverage and potential damage. Always use stakes or weights to keep hoses in position.
Skipping Winterization
Failing to drain and store components before freezing temperatures causes hoses to crack and sprinkler mechanisms to freeze and break. This is one of the most expensive mistakes you can make.
Using Incompatible Fittings
Mixing metric and standard fittings, or using worn threads, creates leaks and connection failures. Always use compatible, high-quality fittings.
Cost Considerations
Budgeting for an above ground sprinkler system involves more than just the initial purchase price.
Initial Investment
Basic oscillating sprinklers start around $20 to $40. Mid-range systems with multiple heads and timers range from $100 to $300. High-end modular systems with advanced features can cost $400 to $600.
Ongoing Expenses
Water bills increase with irrigation use. Electricity costs for timers are minimal. Replacement parts like damaged hoses, broken heads, and worn washers add small recurring costs.
Long-term Value
Above ground systems typically last 2 to 10 years depending on quality and usage. Lower upfront costs mean you can upgrade or replace components as needed without major investment.
Comparison with Underground Systems
While underground systems have higher upfront costs, they may save money over time through reduced water waste and lower maintenance. However, the break-even point often takes several years to reach.
When to Choose Above Ground
Above ground sprinkler systems work best in specific situations.
Renting Your Home
If you do not own the property, you cannot install permanent underground systems. Above ground options provide effective irrigation without landlord approval or long-term commitment.
Small to Medium Lawns
Properties under 5,000 square feet typically water efficiently with above ground systems. Larger areas may require multiple systems or extensive hose networks that become unwieldy. (See Also:Does The Sprinkler Glitch Still Work)
Seasonal Gardens
Vegetable gardens, flower beds, and annual plantings benefit from the flexibility to move sprinklers as plants grow and mature.
Budget Constraints
Homeowners who want automated watering but cannot afford thousands of dollars for underground installation find above ground systems a practical compromise.
DIY Enthusiasts
People who enjoy hands-on projects appreciate the simplicity and control that above ground systems provide.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between an above ground sprinkler system and a portable sprinkler?
A portable sprinkler is a single unit that sits on the lawn and waters a limited area. An above ground sprinkler system uses multiple connected components including pipes, timers, and several sprinkler heads to cover larger areas more efficiently. The system approach provides better coverage and automation capabilities.
How often should I water with an above ground sprinkler system?
Most lawns need about one inch of water per week, which includes rainfall. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage deep root growth. Early morning watering reduces evaporation and minimizes disease risk. Adjust frequency based on weather conditions and soil moisture levels.
Can I leave an above ground sprinkler system out year-round?
No, you should drain and store all components before the first freeze. Leaving hoses and sprinkler heads outside during winter causes them to crack from expanding ice. Store everything in a garage, shed, or other protected location until spring.
Do I need a pressure regulator for my above ground system?
If your water pressure exceeds 60 PSI, a pressure regulator protects your system from damage. Too much pressure causes misting, uneven coverage, and premature wear. Check your faucet pressure with a gauge and add a regulator if needed.
Can I use an above ground sprinkler system with well water?
Yes, but well water often contains more sediment and minerals that can clog sprinkler heads. Install a filter on your system and clean or replace it regularly. You may also need to flush hoses periodically to remove buildup.
What about water restrictions and my above ground system?
Most modern above ground systems work with basic timers that help you comply with watering schedules. Some areas allow above ground systems during restrictions if they include rain sensors or soil moisture detectors. Check local ordinances for specific requirements.
Conclusion
An above ground sprinkler system provides an affordable, flexible solution for irrigating lawns, gardens, and landscapes without the complexity and expense of underground installation. Whether you are renting a home, working within a tight budget, or simply prefer the ability to reconfigure your watering setup, these systems offer genuine practical value.
The key to success lies in proper planning, quality components, and regular maintenance. By understanding your water pressure, measuring your space accurately, and choosing the right sprinkler heads for your needs, you can achieve even coverage and healthy plants. Remember to winterize your system carefully and address small problems before they become expensive repairs.
While above ground systems may not match the automation and aesthetics of professionally installed underground networks, they excel in situations where mobility, affordability, and simplicity matter most. For many homeowners and renters, they represent the ideal balance of functionality and practicality.
