Understanding the Ignition Coil

The ignition coil is a small transformer that converts the low voltage from the magneto or battery into the high voltage needed to fire the spark plug. It consists of two windings: the primary winding, which has relatively few turns of thick wire, and the secondary winding, which has many turns of thin wire. When the primary circuit is interrupted, the collapsing magnetic field induces a high‑voltage pulse in the secondary winding. If either winding is open, shorted, or has deteriorated insulation, the coil will not produce a reliable spark.

Most modern weed eaters use a single‑piece coil that mounts directly on the engine block. The coil’s terminals are usually labeled “primary” (or “low”) and “secondary” (or “high”). Knowing which terminal belongs to which winding is essential for an accurate ohms test. The primary resistance is typically very low, often under one ohm, while the secondary resistance ranges from a few kilohms to several tens of kilohms depending on the manufacturer.

Tools and Safety Precautions

Before you begin, gather the following items:

• Digital multimeter capable of measuring resistance in the 0.1 Ω to 100 kΩ range.
• Insulated screwdriver or nut driver to remove the coil mounting bolts.
• Clean shop rag and a small brush for debris removal.
• Safety glasses and gloves.

Safety is paramount. Ensure the weed eater is completely cooled down and the spark plug wire is disconnected to prevent accidental ignition. Remove the spark plug itself if you plan to crank the engine later. Keep the work area well‑ventilated and free of flammable liquids. Never test a coil while the engine is running or the ignition system is energized.

Preparing the Weed Eater for Testing

Start by placing the weed eater on a stable workbench. Remove the engine cover or shroud to expose the ignition coil. Most models have two or three bolts securing the coil; loosen them just enough to lift the coil away from the mounting surface. Disconnect the primary wire (usually a single spade connector) and the secondary high‑tension lead that runs to the spark plug. Label the wires with masking tape if you think you might mix them up during reassembly.

Inspect the coil for obvious damage: cracked housing, burnt terminals, or corrosion on the connectors. Clean any dirt or oil from the terminals with a lint‑free cloth. A clean connection ensures that the multimeter probes make good contact and that your resistance readings are accurate. (See Also:How To Wrap A Weed Eater)

Step-by-Step Ohms Test Procedure

Follow these ordered steps to perform the ohms test on both windings. The procedure assumes a typical digital multimeter with auto‑range or manual range selection.

1. Set the multimeter to resistance (Ω) mode. If your meter has manual ranges, choose the lowest range that can measure up to 200 Ω for the primary test and the 20 kΩ or 200 kΩ range for the secondary test.
2. Zero the meter. Touch the probes together and note the reading; subtract this value from subsequent measurements if it is not zero.
3. Measure primary resistance. Place one probe on the primary terminal (often marked “P” or “+”) and the other on the coil’s metal mounting tab or the other primary terminal if the coil has two. Record the reading.
4. Measure secondary resistance. Move one probe to the secondary terminal (the high‑tension lead connector) and the other probe to the coil’s metal mounting tab or the primary terminal, depending on the coil design. Record the reading.
5. Compare readings to specifications. Consult the service manual for your specific weed eater model. Typical primary values are 0.2 Ω–1.0 Ω; typical secondary values are 5 kΩ–15 kΩ. Values outside these ranges indicate a faulty winding.
6. Re‑assemble or replace. If both readings are within spec, reinstall the coil, reconnect the wires, and test the engine. If either reading is out of range, replace the coil with an OEM or high‑quality aftermarket unit.

Reading and Interpreting Multimeter Readings

Understanding what the numbers mean is as important as taking them. A primary resistance that reads “OL” (open loop) or a very high value suggests an open circuit in the primary winding, meaning the coil cannot build the magnetic field needed for ignition. A primary reading near zero ohms indicates a shorted primary, which will cause the ignition module to overheat and fail.

For the secondary winding, an “OL” reading means the high‑voltage winding is open, so no spark can be generated. A secondary reading that is significantly lower than the manufacturer’s spec often points to insulation breakdown between turns, which can cause misfires under load. Conversely, a secondary reading that is higher than spec may indicate moisture ingress or corrosion adding resistance to the winding.

Temperature can affect resistance slightly; a warm coil will show marginally higher values. If you are testing a coil that has just been run, let it cool for at least 15 minutes before measuring to avoid skewed results.

Comparison Table: Typical Resistance Values for Common Brands

Use this table as a quick reference. Always verify the exact specifications in the service manual for your specific model, as variations exist even within the same brand.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

• Testing with the spark plug wire attached. The high‑tension lead adds capacitance and can give false secondary readings. Always disconnect it.
• Using the wrong multimeter range. Measuring primary resistance on a 20 kΩ range will show “OL” even on a good coil. Select the appropriate low‑ohm range.
• Ignoring probe resistance. Cheap leads can add 0.1–0.3 Ω. Zero the meter or subtract the lead resistance for accurate primary values.
• Measuring a hot coil. Heat raises resistance. Allow the coil to cool to ambient temperature before testing.
• Confusing primary and secondary terminals. Some coils have three terminals; consult the wiring diagram to identify the correct pair for each winding.

Tips and Best Practices for Accurate Testing

• Use a multimeter with a true‑RMS function if you plan to test AC voltage later; for resistance, any quality digital meter works.
• Keep a small notebook or phone note of each reading alongside the model number for future reference.
• If the coil passes the ohms test but the engine still won’t start, check the ignition module, kill switch, and wiring harness before condemning the coil.
• Apply a thin coat of dielectric grease to the coil terminals during reassembly to prevent corrosion.
• When ordering a replacement, match the part number exactly; aftermarket coils with different resistance specs can cause hard starting or premature failure.

When to Replace the Coil

Replace the ignition coil if either the primary or secondary resistance falls outside the manufacturer’s specified range, or if the coil shows physical damage such as cracked epoxy, melted terminals, or carbon tracking. Even if the resistance is marginally within spec, a coil that has been subjected to repeated overheating or moisture exposure may fail intermittently. In such cases, a proactive replacement prevents future downtime. Always use a coil that matches the original equipment specifications; mismatched resistance can cause the ignition module to operate outside its design parameters, leading to further component failure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I test the coil without removing it from the engine?

Yes, you can test the coil in place as long as you can access the primary and secondary terminals and disconnect the wiring. However, removing the coil provides cleaner probe contact and eliminates the chance of parallel paths through the engine block affecting the reading. (See Also:How Do You Respool A Weed Eater)

What does an “OL” reading on the multimeter indicate?

“OL” stands for “open loop” and means the measured circuit is open (infinite resistance). For the primary winding, this indicates a broken wire inside the coil. For the secondary, it means the high‑voltage winding is open and cannot produce a spark.

Can a bad coil cause the engine to run rough or stall under load?

Absolutely. A coil with high secondary resistance or partial shorting may produce a weak spark that is sufficient at idle but fails under compression, causing misfires, rough running, and stalling when the throttle is opened.

Is it necessary to replace the spark plug when replacing the coil?

It is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended. A fresh spark plug ensures the new coil operates with optimal gap and electrode condition, eliminating a potential source of misfire.

How often should I test the coil as preventive maintenance?

Testing the coil annually or at the start of each heavy‑use season is a good practice, especially for commercial operators. For occasional home users, testing when the engine shows starting or running issues is sufficient. (See Also:How To String A Poulan Weed Eater)
