Understanding Your Murray M2510 Weed Eater

The Murray M2510 is a 25cc gas-powered string trimmer built for residential use, capable of handling everything from regular lawn grass to thick, overgrown weeds and light brush. Its most notable feature for DIY maintenance is its modular bump-feed trimmer head, which is designed for quick, tool-free spool replacement. Unlike some electric trimmers that require disassembling the entire head to access the spool, the M2510 uses a simple locking ring mechanism that lets you remove and replace the spool in seconds. The M2510’s spool has a maximum capacity of 18 feet of 0.080-inch diameter trimmer line, and is calibrated to release 4 to 6 inches of line with each bump on the ground. This model-specific design means that generic restringing advice often doesn’t apply: using the wrong line size, winding in the incorrect direction, or overfilling the spool will lead to poor performance, frequent line breakage, and even damage to the trimmer head over time. Understanding these unique features of the M2510 is the first step to mastering the restringing process.

When to Restring Your Murray M2510 Weed Eater

Knowing when to replace your trimmer line is just as important as knowing how to do it. Waiting too long to restring can lead to poor cutting performance, increased strain on the M2510’s engine, and even damage to the trimmer head. Look for these clear signs that it’s time to restring your M2510:

• The trimmer line is worn down to less than 3 inches in length, even after bumping to release more line.
• The line breaks frequently, more than once per tank of gas, even when cutting soft grass.
• The line is frayed, notched, or has chunks missing from hitting rocks, concrete, or thick stems.
• The line won’t feed when you bump the head on the ground, even after adjusting the line length.
• You’ve used the same spool for 3 or more months of regular use, even if the line looks intact (line can become brittle over time, leading to unexpected breakage).

For most residential users, restringing the M2510 every 2 to 3 months is a good rule of thumb, especially if you use the trimmer weekly. If you only use it occasionally, you can stretch this to every 4 to 6 months, but always inspect the line before each use for wear or damage.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

One of the best parts of restringing the Murray M2510 is that you don’t need any special or expensive tools to get the job done. All the supplies you need are either included with replacement spools or are common household items. Here’s a full list of what you’ll need:

• 0.080-inch diameter trimmer line: This is the exact size required for the M2510, available in bulk rolls or pre-cut lengths. Round or square line works best for most users; heavier twisted or serrated line is optional for tough vegetation.
• Scissors or heavy-duty line cutter: To cut the trimmer line to the correct length. Standard household scissors work fine, but a dedicated line cutter will give you a cleaner, straighter cut.
• Flathead screwdriver (optional): Only needed if the locking ring on your M2510’s head is stuck due to built-up grass or dirt. Most of the time, you can loosen the ring by hand.
• Work gloves: Trim line is extremely sharp, and can easily cut skin if you’re not careful. Gloves also protect your hands from sharp edges on the trimmer head.
• Clean rag and small brush (optional): To clean grass clippings and debris out of the trimmer head before installing the new spool. This step prevents jams and improves feeding performance.

You won’t need any power tools, lubricant, or specialized equipment to restring your M2510, making this a fast, low-cost maintenance task that almost anyone can complete at home.

Safety Precautions Before Starting

Even though restringing a weed eater is a low-risk task, the M2510 is a gas-powered tool with a small engine, so taking basic safety precautions will prevent accidents and injuries. Follow these steps before you begin working on your trimmer:

1. Turn off the engine and let it cool completely: If you’ve been using the M2510 recently, the engine and exhaust can get very hot. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes after use to avoid burns.
2. Disconnect the spark plug wire: This is the most important safety step. Pull the rubber boot off the spark plug to disconnect it, which prevents the engine from accidentally starting if you bump the starter cord. Never skip this step, even if the engine is cold.
3. Wear work gloves and safety glasses: Trim line is sharp enough to cut through skin, and cleaning out the trimmer head can kick up grass clippings and dirt. Glasses protect your eyes from debris, and gloves protect your hands.
4. Work in a well-ventilated area: If you’re cleaning the trimmer head, work outside or in a garage with the door open to avoid inhaling dust or grass clippings.
5. Remove loose clothing and jewelry: Loose sleeves, scarves, or long necklaces can get caught in the trimmer head or spool while you’re working, so wear fitted clothing and tie back long hair.

These simple precautions take less than 5 minutes, and will keep you safe while you work on your M2510.

Step-by-Step Guide to Restringing a Murray M2510 Weed Eater

This step-by-step process is tailored specifically to the Murray M2510’s design, so you won’t have to guess about any part of the restringing process. Follow these steps exactly for smooth, trouble-free performance after restringing.

Step 1: Prepare the Weed Eater

Start by placing the M2510 on a flat, stable surface, like a workbench or the ground, with the engine side facing up. If the engine was recently running, let it cool completely before touching any parts to avoid burns. Wipe down the entire trimmer head with a clean rag to remove built-up grass clippings, dirt, and debris. This prevents dirt from falling into the head when you remove the spool, which can jam the feed mechanism later. If there is caked-on mud or grass stuck in the crevices of the head, use a small brush (like an old toothbrush) to scrub it out before proceeding.

Step 2: Remove the Old Spool

The M2510’s trimmer head has a plastic locking ring on the bottom (the side opposite the cutting line). To remove the old spool, turn the locking ring counterclockwise (left) by hand until it loosens. Most of the time, you won’t need a tool for this, but if the ring is stuck due to built-up dirt, use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry it loose. Be careful not to apply too much force, as the plastic locking ring can crack if forced. Once the locking ring is loose, pull the old spool straight out of the head. Take a photo of the old spool before removing it, or note which direction the line was wound and which side the line exited the head, as this will guide you when winding the new line. If the old line is still intact, you can even use it as a reference for how much line to cut for the new spool.

Step 3: Measure and Cut the New Trimmer Line

The M2510’s spool holds a maximum of 18 feet of 0.080-inch line. If you are winding a brand new, empty spool, measure 18 feet of line with a tape measure, or use a reference like the length of two standard indoor broom handles (roughly 18 feet) to estimate the length. If you are topping up an existing spool that still has some line left, measure the length of the remaining line and cut a matching piece of new line. Cut the line with scissors or a line cutter, making sure both ends are perfectly straight. Angled cuts can catch on the inside of the trimmer head and cause jams when feeding line. Once cut, set the line aside until you’re ready to wind it onto the spool.

Step 4: Wind the New Trimmer Line Onto the Spool

Before winding, check the spool for a printed arrow indicating the correct winding direction (most M2510 replacement spools have this arrow on the side). If there is no arrow, look at the old spool you removed earlier to confirm the direction. Wind the line in the direction of the arrow, which for the M2510 is clockwise when looking at the bottom of the spool (the side with the locking ring). As you wind, overlap each layer of line by about 1/4 inch to prevent gaps between layers, which can cause the line to slip and jam. Keep the line taut as you wind, but don’t pull it tight: over-tightening the line will make it impossible to extend when you bump the head. Stop winding when you are about 1/4 inch away from the edge of the spool: this small gap prevents the line from slipping off the spool during use. Once the line is fully wound, tuck the two ends of the line into the notches on the sides of the spool (if your spool has them) to hold them in place while you install the spool.

Step 5: Reinstall the Spool and Test

Align the spool with the opening in the trimmer head, making sure the two ends of the line are sticking out of the feed holes on opposite sides of the head. Push the spool straight into the head until it seats fully, then turn the locking ring clockwise (right) by hand until it is tight. Do not over-tighten the ring, as this can crack the plastic. Once the spool is installed, reconnect the spark plug wire to the spark plug. Start the M2510’s engine and let it idle for 30 seconds, then tap the bottom of the trimmer head on the ground 2 to 3 times to test the bump feed. You should see 4 to 6 inches of line extend with each tap. If the line doesn’t extend, check that you wound it in the correct direction, and that the line ends are sticking out of the feed holes. If the line extends too far or too little, adjust the line length by pulling out more line or pushing it back into the head until it’s the correct length. Your M2510 is now ready to use.

Understanding Winding Direction for the Murray M2510

Winding the trimmer line in the wrong direction is the most common mistake people make when restringing the M2510, and it leads to a host of performance issues. The M2510’s bump-feed mechanism is designed to release line when the head is tapped on the ground, which only works if the line is wound in the correct direction. When you bump the head, the mechanism pulls line from the spool: if the line is wound clockwise (the correct direction for the M2510), it unspools smoothly when pulled. If you wind it counterclockwise, the line will tighten when you bump the head, instead of extending, leading to constant jams and broken line. Almost all replacement spools for the M2510 have a printed arrow on the side indicating the correct clockwise winding direction. If your spool doesn’t have an arrow, check the old spool you removed: the line will be wound in the correct direction on the old spool, so match that direction when winding the new line. Taking 10 seconds to confirm the winding direction before you start winding will save you 10 minutes of troubleshooting later.

Choosing the Right Trimmer Line for Your M2510

While the M2510 requires 0.080-inch diameter line, there are several different types of line available, each designed for different use cases. Choosing the right line for your yard will improve cutting performance, reduce breakage, and extend the life of your trimmer. The table below compares the most common types of 0.080-inch trimmer line to help you choose the best option for your needs:

For most residential users of the Murray M2510, 0.080-inch round or square line is the best choice. Round line is affordable and works well for regular grass cutting, while square line is a small upgrade that holds up much better if you frequently edge along concrete or cut thick weeds. Heavier twisted or serrated line is not necessary for most M2510 users, as it can put extra strain on the trimmer’s 25cc engine if used for long periods, and is more difficult to wind.

Tips and Best Practices for Long-Lasting Performance

Following these simple tips will make restringing your M2510 even faster, and keep your trimmer running smoothly between restrings:

• Clean the trimmer head before every restring: Remove all grass clippings and dirt from the inside of the head before installing a new spool. Built-up debris is the most common cause of feed jams, even if you wind the line correctly.
• Leave a small gap at the spool edge: Overfilling the spool causes the line to slip off during use or jam the feed mechanism. Stop winding when you are 1/4 inch away from the edge of the spool.
• Cut line ends straight: Angled cuts catch on the inside of the trimmer head and prevent smooth feeding. Use sharp scissors or a line cutter for a clean cut every time.
• Store spare line properly: Trim line becomes brittle in extreme temperatures and can absorb moisture if exposed. Store spare rolls in a sealed plastic bag in a cool, dry place.
• Test the feed after restringing: Start the engine and test the bump feed before putting the trimmer away. Catching issues right away is easier than troubleshooting a jam mid-yard job.
• Don’t over-tighten the locking ring: The M2510’s locking ring is plastic, and over-tightening can crack it. Tighten it until snug, but don’t force it past that point.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Restringing

Even experienced DIYers make mistakes when restringing a weed eater for the first time. Avoiding these common errors will save you time, frustration, and unnecessary wear on your M2510:

1. Winding the line in the wrong direction: This is the most common mistake, causing the line to bunch up, fail to feed when bumped, and break frequently. Always check the arrow on the spool or the old spool before winding.
2. Over-winding the spool: Pulling the line tight or filling the spool to the edge makes it too taut to extend when bumped. Wind loosely and leave a 1/4 inch gap at the spool edge.
3. Using the wrong line diameter: The M2510 requires 0.080-inch line. Thinner 0.065-inch line slips and cuts poorly, while thicker 0.095-inch line jams the feed and strains the engine. Confirm the size on the label printed on your trimmer head.
4. Skipping the spark plug disconnect: Forgetting this step can lead to accidental starting and serious injury. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before touching the trimmer head.
5. Skipping head cleaning: Dirt and grass clippings inside the head jam the feed mechanism even if you wind the line correctly. Spend 2 minutes cleaning the head before installing a new spool.

If you do make a mistake and the line won’t feed after restringing, don’t panic: simply remove the spool, unwind the line, and rewind it in the correct direction, following the steps in this guide.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size trimmer line does the Murray M2510 use?

The Murray M2510 is designed to use 0.080-inch (2mm) diameter trimmer line. This size is calibrated for the M2510’s bump-feed head and 25cc engine, balancing cutting power and durability for residential use. Using a different size will cause feeding issues, poor performance, or engine strain. You can confirm the correct size on the label printed on the side of your trimmer head.

Which direction do I wind the line on a Murray M2510?

Wind the line clockwise when looking at the bottom of the spool (the side with the locking ring). Most replacement spools for the M2510 have a printed arrow pointing in the correct clockwise direction. Winding counterclockwise causes the line to bunch up, fail to feed, and break frequently. If your spool has no arrow, match the winding direction of the old spool you removed.

How much trimmer line do I need for a restring?

The M2510’s spool holds a maximum of 18 feet of 0.080-inch line. Use this full length for a new, empty spool. If you are topping up an existing spool with remaining line, measure the old line and cut a matching piece of new line. You never need more than 18 feet for a single restring.

Should I buy pre-cut line or bulk line for my M2510?

Bulk line is more cost-effective for most users: a 50-foot roll costs $5–$8, while a pack of 10 pre-cut lines costs $10–$15. Pre-cut line is convenient for frequent restringing, but bulk line is cheaper for regular maintenance. Both work with the M2510 as long as the line is 0.080-inch diameter.

Why is my line falling out after restringing?

This is almost always caused by two issues: winding the line in the wrong direction, or not leaving enough line sticking out of the feed holes. Double-check that you wound the line clockwise, and that 6–8 inches of line is sticking out of each feed hole before locking the spool in place. If the line still falls out, make sure the locking ring is fully tightened and the spool is seated correctly inside the head.
