Understanding the Ryobi CS26 Curved Shaft Trimmer

The Ryobi CS26 is a gas-powered string trimmer featuring a curved shaft design, which makes it particularly well-suited for trimming in tight spaces and around obstacles such as fences, walls, and garden beds. Unlike straight-shaft trimmers, the curved shaft allows for better visibility of the cutting area, making it easier to achieve precise cuts. This design also reduces user fatigue during extended use, as the weight distribution is more balanced.

The trimmer uses a dual-line bump-feed system, which means that both ends of the string are fed from a central spool housed inside the cutting head. When the line wears down or breaks, you can advance new line by simply bumping the trimmer head against the ground while it is running. This mechanism eliminates the need for manual line feeding, making the tool more convenient to operate.

Understanding how the bump-feed system works is crucial when learning how to string a Ryobi Weed Eater CS26. The spool must be removed and rewound correctly to ensure that the line feeds smoothly and does not tangle or jam. Familiarity with the internal components, such as the spool, spring, and line guides, will help you avoid common errors during the stringing process.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before you begin the process of stringing your Ryobi CS26, it is important to gather all the necessary tools and materials. Having everything on hand will save you time and prevent interruptions during the procedure. Here is a list of what you will need:

• New trimmer line: Choose a high-quality line that is compatible with your trimmer. The Ryobi CS26 typically uses a 0.065-inch or 0.080-inch line, depending on the model variant. Always check your owner’s manual for the correct specifications.
• Phillips head screwdriver: This will be used to remove the screws securing the cutting head to the trimmer.
• Flathead screwdriver: Useful for prying open the cutting head housing if necessary.
• Clean cloth or rag: For wiping away dirt and debris from the spool and cutting head.
• Small container: To hold the old string and screws while you work.
• Gloves: Protect your hands from sharp edges and debris.

While some of these items may already be available in your workshop, it is worth purchasing a few extra feet of trimmer line so you always have a backup when needed. Using the correct type and gauge of line is essential for proper operation and to prevent damage to the trimmer.

Preparation Steps Before Stringing

Proper preparation is key to successfully stringing your Ryobi CS26. Rushing into the process without taking the necessary precautions can lead to frustration and potential damage to the tool. Follow these preparation steps to ensure a smooth experience:

Step-by-Step Guide to String the Ryobi CS26

Now that you have gathered your tools and prepared your workspace, it is time to dive into the actual process. This section provides a detailed, step-by-step guide on how to string a Ryobi Weed Eater CS26. Follow each step carefully to ensure a successful result.

Removing the Old String

The first step in stringing your trimmer is to remove the old, worn-out line. Here is how to do it:

1. Locate the release mechanism: On the Ryobi CS26, the cutting head is typically secured with screws or a quick-release button. Refer to your manual to identify the exact method for your model.
2. Remove the cutting head: If your model uses screws, use a Phillips head screwdriver to loosen and remove them. Place the screws in a small container to avoid losing them. For quick-release models, press the release button and gently pull the head away from the trimmer.
3. Open the spool housing: Once the cutting head is removed, you will see the spool inside. Most spools can be lifted out by pulling upward. Some models may require you to twist or press a tab to release the spool.
4. Remove the old string: Pull the ends of the old string from the eyelets on either side of the cutting head. If the string is tangled, carefully unwind it to avoid damaging the spool or internal components.
5. Clean the spool and housing: Use a clean cloth to wipe away any dirt, grass clippings, or debris that may have accumulated inside the spool housing. A buildup of debris can interfere with the smooth operation of the new line.

With the old string removed and the components cleaned, you are ready to prepare and install the new line.

Preparing the New String

Installing the new string correctly is just as important as removing the old one. Follow these steps to prepare the new line:

1. Cut the new string: Measure and cut approximately 15 to 20 feet of trimmer line. Having extra length makes it easier to work with and ensures you have enough for both sides of the spool.
2. Identify the winding direction: Look for arrows or markings on the spool that indicate the correct winding direction. Winding the line in the wrong direction can cause tangles and feeding problems.
3. Start winding the line: Insert one end of the string into the designated slot or hole on the spool. Hold the string firmly and begin winding it in the direction indicated by the arrows. Apply even tension as you wind to prevent loose coils.
4. Maintain proper tension: Keep the line tight as you wind, but do not over-tighten. Over-tightening can cause the spool to bind when the line is released.
5. Leave a tail: When you reach the end of the spool, leave a few inches of line extending from the last coil. This tail will be used to thread the line through the eyelets.

Proper winding technique is essential for ensuring that the line feeds smoothly and does not tangle during operation.

Installing the New String

Now that the new string is prepared, it is time to install it in the cutting head. Follow these steps to complete the installation:

1. Thread the line through the eyelets: Take the tail end of the line and thread it through one of the eyelets on the cutting head. Pull it through until both ends of the line are even.
2. Insert the spool into the housing: Carefully place the spool back into the cutting head housing. Make sure it sits flush and is aligned correctly with the internal components.
3. Secure the cutting head: Reattach the cutting head to the trimmer using the screws or quick-release mechanism. Tighten the screws securely, but do not overtighten, as this can strip the threads.
4. Check line length: Ensure that both ends of the line extend evenly from the eyelets. If one side is significantly longer, gently pull on the shorter side to equalize the lengths.
5. Test the bump feed: Gently bump the cutting head against the ground a few times to advance the line. The line should feed smoothly and evenly from both sides.

Once the new string is installed and tested, you can move on to verifying that everything is working correctly.

Testing the Trimmer After Stringing

After installing the new string, it is important to test the trimmer to ensure that everything is functioning properly. Here is how to do it:

1. Reconnect the spark plug wire: Once you are confident that the installation is complete, reconnect the spark plug wire to restore power to the engine.
2. Start the trimmer: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to start the trimmer. Allow it to warm up for a minute or two.
3. Check line feed: While the trimmer is running, gently bump the cutting head against the ground to advance the line. Observe whether the line feeds smoothly and evenly from both sides.
4. Inspect for tangles: If the line becomes tangled or fails to feed properly, turn off the trimmer and recheck the spool installation. Ensure that the line is wound in the correct direction and that there are no kinks or twists.
5. Test cutting performance: Use the trimmer on a small area of grass or weeds to verify that the cutting performance is satisfactory. The line should cut cleanly without excessive vibration or noise.

If everything is working correctly, you can proceed to use the trimmer as normal. If issues persist, refer to the troubleshooting section below.

Choosing the right type of trimmer line can significantly impact the performance and longevity of your Ryobi CS26. Different line types are designed for specific applications and offer varying degrees of durability and cutting efficiency. The table below compares common string types used with curved-shaft trimmers:

When selecting a string type, consider the thickness of the vegetation you regularly trim. For light to moderate trimming, a standard round line is usually sufficient. For heavier-duty applications, a square or twisted line will provide better cutting performance and last longer.

Tips and Best Practices

To make the stringing process easier and extend the life of your trimmer line, consider the following tips and best practices:

• Use the correct line gauge: Always use the line diameter recommended by Ryobi for your specific model. Using a line that is too thick can overload the engine, while a line that is too thin may not cut effectively.
• Wind the line neatly: Take your time when winding the line onto the spool. Neat, even coils prevent tangles and ensure smooth feeding.
• Keep the cutting head clean: Regularly clean the cutting head and spool to remove grass clippings and debris. A clean cutting head operates more efficiently and reduces wear on the line.
• Store extra line: Keep a roll of spare trimmer line in your garage or workshop. Having extra line on hand means you will never be caught off guard when the current line runs out.
• Check for wear: Periodically inspect the line for signs of fraying or damage. Replace the line before it breaks completely to avoid potential damage to the trimmer.
• Use the bump feed correctly: When advancing the line, use short, controlled bumps rather than aggressive impacts. This helps prevent the line from becoming tangled or overwound.
• Follow the winding direction: Always wind the line in the direction indicated on the spool. Reversing the winding direction can cause the line to tangle and feed improperly.

Implementing these best practices will not only make the stringing process easier but also improve the overall performance and lifespan of your Ryobi CS26 trimmer.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Even experienced users can make mistakes when stringing a Ryobi Weed Eater CS26. Being aware of these common errors and how to avoid them can save you time and frustration:

• Winding the line in the wrong direction: One of the most frequent mistakes is winding the line in the incorrect direction. Always check for arrows on the spool and follow them. If the line is wound backwards, it will tangle and fail to feed properly.
• Using the wrong line gauge: Installing a line that is too thick or too thin can cause performance issues. Refer to your owner’s manual for the correct specifications and stick to them.
• Over-tightening the spool: While it is important to secure the spool properly, over-tightening can cause the line to bind. Apply firm but gentle pressure when installing the spool.
• Skipping the cleaning step: Failing to clean the cutting head and spool before installing new line can lead to debris interfering with the line feed. Always take the time to clean these components.
• Not leaving enough tail: When threading the line through the eyelets, ensure that there is a sufficient tail to work with. A tail that is too short can make installation difficult and may result in uneven line lengths.
• Starting the trimmer immediately: After stringing, always test the line feed before using the trimmer on vegetation. Starting the trimmer without verifying proper line feed can cause damage to the tool or surrounding objects.
• Ignoring the owner’s manual: The owner’s manual contains model-specific information that can prevent mistakes. Always consult it when performing maintenance tasks.

By avoiding these common pitfalls, you can ensure a successful stringing process and maintain the performance of your trimmer.
