What Is Weed Eater?
Weed Eater is a leading brand of outdoor power equipment, best known for pioneering the modern string trimmer market. The brand’s name has become so synonymous with line trimmers that many people use “Weed Eater” as a generic term for the tool, much like how “Kleenex” is used to refer to all facial tissues.
Today, Weed Eater sells a full range of yard care tools, including gas, electric, and battery-powered string trimmers, leaf blowers, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers, chainsaws, and robotic lawn mowers. The brand focuses on affordable, reliable equipment for residential homeowners and entry-level commercial landscaping crews, with products sold at major hardware retailers across North America, Europe, and Asia.
Origin of the Weed Eater Brand
The Weed Eater brand was founded in 1974 by George Ballas, a Houston-based inventor. Ballas conceived the idea for the first nylon-line string trimmer in 1971, after watching a car wash use rotating nylon bristles to clean vehicles without scratching the paint. He realized the same concept could cut weeds and tall grass around trees, fences, and garden beds without damaging surrounding plants.
Ballas built his first prototype by attaching a nylon line to a small gasoline engine mounted on a bicycle wheel, testing it in his own yard to refine the design. He launched the Weed Eater Company in 1974, and the product was an immediate hit. The lightweight, easy-to-use trimmer replaced manual scythes and heavy lawn mowers for edging and weed control, revolutionizing residential and commercial yard care.
First Corporate Acquisition: The 1970s Shift
Just three years after its founding, Ballas sold the Weed Eater Company to Emerson Electric, a St. Louis-based manufacturing conglomerate, in 1977. Ballas made the decision to sell to scale production and distribution, as Emerson had the resources to mass-produce Weed Eater trimmers and get them into hardware stores across the United States and internationally.
Under Emerson’s ownership, Weed Eater expanded its product line beyond the original string trimmer, adding leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, lawn edgers, and small lawn mowers to its catalog. The brand’s popularity grew exponentially during this period, becoming a household name for affordable, reliable yard care tools. Emerson also invested in improving the design and durability of Weed Eater products, making them suitable for both casual residential users and small commercial landscaping operations.
Who Owns Weed Eater Today? Current Parent Company
The answer to “Who Owns Weed Eater?” today is the Husqvarna Group, a Swedish multinational corporation that specializes in outdoor power equipment, robotic lawn care, and forestry tools. Husqvarna acquired the Weed Eater brand in 1997, when it purchased the Poulan/Weed Eater division from Emerson Electric.
Husqvarna is one of the oldest and largest outdoor equipment manufacturers in the world, founded in 1689 as a weapons foundry before pivoting to outdoor power tools in the mid-20th century. The company is publicly traded on the Nasdaq Stockholm stock exchange, with headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden, and operations in over 100 countries. In addition to Weed Eater, Husqvarna owns a portfolio of well-known outdoor equipment brands, including the premium Husqvarna professional line, Poulan, RedMax, and Flymo. Current Ownership Structure
As a publicly traded company, Husqvarna Group is owned by its shareholders, with no single individual or entity holding a majority stake. The largest shareholders include major investment firms, pension funds, and institutional investors based in Europe and North America.
The Weed Eater brand operates as part of Husqvarna’s Consumer Products division, which focuses on affordable, user-friendly tools for residential and light commercial users. While the brand is headquartered in Sweden as part of the larger Husqvarna Group, its North American operations are based in the United States, with customer support, distribution, and regional marketing teams located across the country. This structure allows Husqvarna to tailor Weed Eater products to the needs of North American users while leveraging global manufacturing and supply chain resources.

How Weed Eater Fits Into the Larger Outdoor Power Equipment Market
The global outdoor power equipment (OPE) market is valued at over $30 billion, with major players including Husqvarna, Stihl, Deere & Co, and Techtronic Industries. The market is split into premium, mid-tier, and budget-friendly segments, each targeting different user groups.
Weed Eater occupies the mid-tier segment, offering affordable, reliable tools for casual residential users and entry-level commercial landscapers. It competes directly with other mid-tier brands like Troy-Bilt, Craftsman, and Poulan (also owned by Husqvarna), while premium brands like Stihl target professional landscapers who need high-durability tools for heavy use. Weed Eater’s long brand recognition and wide retail availability make it a top choice for users who want a trusted tool without the premium price tag of high-end professional equipment.

How to Identify Authentic Weed Eater Products
With the rise of third-party online marketplaces, counterfeit Weed Eater products have become increasingly common. These fake tools are often made with low-quality parts that break quickly, and they come with no valid manufacturer warranty. If you are shopping for a Weed Eater trimmer or other tool, follow these steps to confirm you are purchasing an authentic product:
- Check the official branding and packaging: Authentic Weed Eater products feature the brand’s signature green and white color scheme, the official Weed Eater logo, and clear, legible model numbers printed on the packaging and the tool itself. Counterfeit products often have misspelled logos, blurry printing, inconsistent color matching, or generic packaging with no brand markings.
- Verify the model number against the official Husqvarna website: Every legitimate Weed Eater product has a unique model number listed on the Husqvarna consumer product page. Cross-reference the model number on the product’s packaging or the tool’s motor housing with the official listings to confirm it is a real, authorized item.
- Buy from authorized retailers only: Products sold at authorized retailers including Home Depot, Lowe’s, Walmart, Tractor Supply Co., and official Husqvarna dealers are guaranteed to be authentic. Avoid purchasing Weed Eater products from unverified third-party sellers on platforms like eBay, Facebook Marketplace, or random Amazon storefronts with no seller history or reviews.
- Inspect the warranty documentation: All authentic Weed Eater products come with a manufacturer’s warranty backed by Husqvarna. Counterfeit products often have fake, generic warranty cards or no warranty at all. If a seller cannot provide valid, verifiable warranty information, the product is likely not genuine.
- Check the serial number: Every authentic Weed Eater tool has a unique serial number etched into the frame or motor housing. You can contact Husqvarna customer support directly with the serial number to verify the product’s authenticity and manufacturing date if you are unsure.
Tips for Buying and Maintaining Weed Eater Equipment
Whether you are buying your first Weed Eater trimmer or adding to your collection of yard care tools, these tips will help you get the most value and lifespan from your equipment: (See Also:Do You Put Gas In Weed Eater)
Buying Tips
- Match the tool to your use case: If you only have a small residential yard (less than 1/4 acre), a corded electric or battery-powered Weed Eater trimmer is sufficient, quieter, and requires far less maintenance than a gas-powered model. For larger lots, overgrown properties, or commercial use, opt for a gas-powered model with a 25cc or larger engine for more power and extended runtime.
- Consider battery platform compatibility: If you already own other battery-powered outdoor tools, look for Weed Eater models that use the same battery platform as your existing equipment. This will save you money on extra batteries and reduce clutter in your garage or shed.
- Buy from authorized retailers: Purchasing from official retailers ensures you get a genuine product with a valid warranty and access to Husqvarna’s customer support team if you have issues with your tool.
Maintenance Tips
- Clean the tool after each use: Remove grass clippings and debris from the cutting head, air filter, and engine housing to prevent buildup that reduces performance and causes premature wear.
- Replace trimmer line regularly: Dull line tears grass instead of cutting it cleanly and strains the engine. Keep spare line on hand and replace it when cutting performance drops.
- Schedule annual tune-ups for gas models: Change the oil, spark plug, and air filter once per year (more often for frequent use) to extend engine life and maintain efficiency.
- Store the tool properly: Keep the Weed Eater in a dry, sheltered spot away from extreme temperatures. Remove the battery from battery-powered models before storage to extend its lifespan.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Purchasing Weed Eater Gear
Many first-time Weed Eater buyers make avoidable mistakes that lead to wasted money, poor performance, or short tool lifespans. Avoid these common pitfalls when shopping for Weed Eater equipment:
- Buying a counterfeit product to save money: Counterfeit Weed Eater tools are often sold at steep discounts on unverified marketplaces, but they are made with low-quality parts that break after minimal use, and they have no valid warranty. You will almost always end up spending more money replacing a cheap fake than you would have on a genuine, durable Weed Eater tool.
- Choosing a gas-powered model for small residential use: Gas-powered trimmers are louder, heavier, and require regular maintenance like oil changes and spark plug replacements. For small yards (under 1/4 acre), a corded electric or battery-powered model is far more convenient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly.
- Ignoring warranty terms: Most Weed Eater products come with limited warranties that cover defects in materials and workmanship for 2 to 5 years, but they do not cover damage from misuse, accidental damage, or normal wear and tear. Read the warranty documentation carefully before purchasing to understand what is covered and for how long.
- Using the wrong trimmer line: Using trimmer line that is too thick or too thin for your specific Weed Eater model can damage the cutting head, reduce cutting performance, and put extra strain on the engine. Always check the manufacturer’s recommendations for the correct line diameter and shape for your model before purchasing replacement line.
