Why Does Weed Eater String Wear Out So Fast?

Before diving into the replacement process, it helps to understand why your string wears out so quickly in the first place. The most common causes of premature string wear include:

• Hitting hard surfaces: If you frequently trim near concrete, rocks, fence posts, or brick, the abrasive surfaces will fray and dull the string in a matter of minutes.
• Cutting thick, woody vegetation: While weed eaters can handle small saplings and thick weeds, the string will wear down much faster when cutting through dense, fibrous material.
• Using the wrong string diameter: If your trimmer calls for 0.080” string and you use thinner 0.065” line, it will snap and wear out far more quickly. Thicker string than recommended can overload the motor and cause premature wear on both the string and the tool.
• Improper winding: If you wind the string too tightly, or cross the lines on a dual-line head, the string will tangle and break during use.
• UV exposure and improper storage: Leaving your weed eater in direct sunlight for long periods degrades the nylon or polymer string, making it brittle and prone to breaking.

Understanding these factors will help you avoid unnecessary wear, and make your string replacements less frequent over time.

Types of Weed Eater String Heads

Weed eaters come with three main types of string heads, and the replacement process is slightly different for each. The table below breaks down the key differences between the most common models to help you identify which one you have. If you’re still unsure, check your owner’s manual for the exact head type for your specific trimmer model.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Gathering all your supplies before you start will make the replacement process fast and frustration-free. Here’s everything you’ll need:

• Replacement weed eater string: Make sure to buy the exact diameter recommended for your trimmer model (common sizes are 0.065”, 0.080”, 0.095”, and 0.105”). You can find this information in your owner’s manual or printed on the side of your existing spool.
• Work gloves: Weed eater string has extremely sharp edges that can cause deep cuts, even when you’re being careful.
• Safety glasses: Grass clippings, debris, and even snapped string can fly into your eyes while you’re working or testing the trimmer.
• Small flathead screwdriver or trimmer line wrench: Most trimmer heads have a small screw or twist-lock cap that holds the spool in place, and a dedicated wrench makes removing it much easier.
• Wire cutters or heavy-duty scissors: For cutting the string to the correct length.
• Clean rag: To wipe away grass clippings, sap, and debris from the head and shaft before reassembling.
• Optional: Silicone lubricant: A small amount of lubricant on the trimmer shaft can prevent the spool from sticking and make string advancement smoother.

Safety Precautions Before You Start

Weed eaters are powerful tools, and even a small mistake during maintenance can lead to injury or tool damage. Follow these safety steps before you touch any parts of your trimmer:

• Disconnect the power source: For gas-powered trimmers, remove the spark plug wire to prevent accidental startup. For corded electric models, unplug the tool from the outlet. For battery-powered models, remove the battery pack completely.
• Work in a well-ventilated area: If you’re working on a gas trimmer, avoid enclosed spaces like garages to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
• Wear your protective gear: Put on your work gloves and safety glasses before handling any parts of the trimmer head.
• Let a hot engine cool down: If you just used your gas trimmer, wait at least 15 minutes for the engine and exhaust to cool before touching any metal parts to avoid burns.
• Clear your work area: Remove any loose debris, tools, or tripping hazards from around your workspace to avoid accidents.

Step-by-Step: How to Change Weed Eater String on a Bump-Feed Head

Bump-feed heads are the most common type for residential trimmers, and they’re designed for easy, user-friendly replacement. Follow these steps for a smooth swap:

Step 1: Remove the Old String and Disassemble the Head

First, disconnect the power source as outlined in the safety section. Locate the spool cap on the bottom of the trimmer head – it usually twists counterclockwise to remove, or is held in place by a small screw. Use your screwdriver or wrench to loosen the cap if needed, then pull the old spool out of the head housing. If there is any remaining string stuck in the housing, pull it out with your gloved hand.

Step 2: Clean the Head and Shaft

Use your clean rag to wipe away any grass clippings, sap, or debris from the inside of the head housing and the trimmer shaft. Buildup can cause the spool to stick and prevent the string from advancing properly. If there is stuck-on sap, use a small amount of rubbing alcohol on the rag to dissolve it.

Step 3: Wind the New String Correctly

Take your new replacement string and feed one end through the small hole in the center of the spool, leaving 6 to 8 inches of excess string sticking out. Wind the string around the spool in a clockwise direction (check your owner’s manual to confirm, as some models use counterclockwise winding) – this ensures the string will feed correctly when you tap the head. Wind the string evenly, without overlapping or crossing lines, until the spool is full. Leave the 6 to 8 inch excess sticking out, and tuck the end into the small notch on the side of the spool to hold it in place. (See Also:How To Repair A Weed Eater Carburetor)

Step 4: Reassemble the Head and Test

Thread the excess string ends through the two small eyelets on the top of the head housing. Insert the spool back into the housing, making sure the string catches in the notches on the inside of the head. Twist the spool cap back on clockwise until it is tight. Reconnect the power source, put on your safety glasses, and test the trimmer: tap the bottom of the head on the ground while the trimmer is running to make sure 2 to 3 inches of string releases automatically. If the string doesn’t advance, double-check that you wound it in the correct direction and that the ends are caught in the notches.

Step-by-Step: How to Change Weed Eater String on a Fixed-Line Head

Fixed-line heads are popular for heavy-duty use because they eliminate the need to wind a spool, and they work well with thicker, more durable string. Here’s how to replace the string on a fixed-line model:

Step 1: Remove the Old String and Disassemble the Head

Disconnect the power source first. Fixed-line heads typically have a small access cover on the side of the head held in place by a screw or twist-lock. Remove the cover to access the line locking mechanism. Pull out any remaining old string from the head, and wipe away any debris from the inside of the housing.

Step 2: Thread and Secure the New String

Cut a 10 to 15 foot length of replacement string (use the correct diameter for your model). Fold the string in half to create two equal lengths, then insert the folded end into the small hole on the side of the head. Pull the string through until both ends are sticking out equally from the other side of the head. Insert each end of the string into the small locking notches on the top of the head to hold them in place.

Step 3: Adjust the Line Length and Test

Pull both ends of the string outward until you have 4 to 6 inches of line extending from the head on each side. Trim any excess string with your wire cutters, leaving a small ½ inch tail on each end to prevent it from slipping out of the notches. Reattach the access cover, reconnect the power source, and test the trimmer: run it at full speed for a few seconds to make sure the line spins evenly and cuts through grass cleanly. If the line is too long, pull out a small amount and trim it to your desired length.

Step-by-Step: How to Change Weed Eater String on a Dual-Line Head

Dual-line heads use two separate strands of string to deliver more cutting power for dense vegetation, but the replacement process is a bit more involved to avoid tangles. Follow these steps for a smooth replacement:

Step 1: Disassemble the Dual-Line Spool

Disconnect the power source, then remove the spool cap from the bottom of the head. Most dual-line heads have either two separate small spools or one larger spool divided into two compartments. Pull the old spool(s) out of the housing, and take note of how the old string was wound – most dual-line models require the two lines to be wound in opposite directions to prevent tangling during use.

Step 2: Wind Each Line onto the Spool

Cut two 10-foot lengths of replacement string, or use a pre-wound dual-line spool if you have one. If you’re winding the string yourself, feed one end of the first line through the center hole of its spool compartment, leaving 6 inches of excess. Wind the line in the direction indicated on the spool (usually clockwise for the first line, counterclockwise for the second) until the compartment is full, then tuck the end into the notch to hold it in place. Repeat the process for the second line on the opposite side of the spool, making sure the two lines do not cross or overlap during winding.

Step 3: Reassemble and Test

Thread the two loose ends of the string through the eyelets on the top of the head housing, making sure they do not cross each other. Insert the spool back into the housing, ensuring the lines catch in the advancement notches. Twist the spool cap back on until tight, reconnect the power source, and test the trimmer. Run it at full speed for a few seconds: you should see both lines spinning evenly, with no tangling or wobbling. If the lines tangle, turn off the trimmer immediately, disassemble the head, and rewind the string to make sure it is not crossed.

How to Measure and Cut the Perfect Length of Weed Eater String

Cutting your string to the correct length is just as important as winding it properly, as it prevents tangles, reduces wear on the motor, and ensures even cutting performance. Here’s how to get the right length for every head type: (See Also:How To Start Fs 38 Stihl Weed Eater)

• Bump-feed heads: Wind the string onto the spool until it is full, leaving 6 to 8 inches of excess on each end (or one end for single-line models). Cut the excess with your wire cutters, leaving the small tail tucked into the notch to hold it in place.
• Fixed-line heads: Pre-cut a 10 to 15 foot length of string, then fold it in half to create two equal 5 to 7.5 foot strands. This ensures both sides of the line are the same length for even cutting.
• Dual-line heads: Cut two separate 10-foot lengths of string, one for each spool compartment. This gives you enough line to wind each spool fully without running out.

For an extra cutting boost, cut the ends of the string at a 45-degree angle to create a sharp, pointed tip. Sharpened string cuts through thick weeds and dense grass much more easily than blunt, flat-cut ends.

Tips to Extend the Life of Your Weed Eater String

Replacing your string every few months is normal, but you can make it last much longer with these simple best practices:

1. Use the recommended string diameter: Always check your owner’s manual for the exact size your trimmer requires. Thicker string (0.095” or 0.105”) is more durable for thick vegetation, while thinner string (0.065” or 0.080”) works well for light grass trimming.
2. Avoid hard surfaces: Try to trim at least 2 to 3 inches away from concrete, rocks, and fence posts. If you need to edge along a hard surface, use the edge guard that came with your trimmer to protect the string.
3. Keep the line at the recommended length: For most trimmers, 4 to 6 inches of exposed line is ideal. Longer line puts extra strain on the motor and causes more wear, while shorter line requires you to tap the bump-feed head more often, which wears out the mechanism faster.
4. Store your trimmer properly: Keep your weed eater in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. UV rays degrade nylon and polymer string, making it brittle and prone to breaking.
5. Clean the head after each use: Wipe away grass clippings, sap, and dirt from the head and spool after every use. Built-up debris can corrode the string and cause it to break prematurely.
6. Invest in high-quality string: Cheap generic string is often made of low-grade nylon that wears out quickly. Reinforced polymer or nylon composite string is more durable, resists fraying, and can last 2 to 3 times longer than budget options.

Common Troubleshooting Issues After Replacement

Even if you follow all the steps correctly, you may run into a few common issues after replacing your string. Here’s how to fix them fast:

• String won’t advance: First, check that you wound the string in the correct direction (clockwise for most bump-feed models). Make sure the loose ends of the string are tucked into the notches on the spool, and that the spool is seated properly in the head housing. If you have a bump-feed head, make sure the advancement spring inside the housing is not broken or stuck.
• String keeps breaking during use: This is usually caused by using the wrong diameter string, hitting hard surfaces, or winding the string too tightly. Check that you’re using the correct size for your model, and avoid trimming near abrasive surfaces. If the string still breaks, inspect the trimmer head for cracks or damage that may be catching on the string.
• String tangles constantly: Tangles almost always happen because the string was wound incorrectly. For bump-feed and fixed-line heads, make sure you didn’t cross the string while winding. For dual-line heads, confirm that the two lines are wound in opposite directions and do not cross each other inside the housing. Cutting the string too long can also cause tangles, so trim it to the recommended length.
• Trimmer vibrates excessively after replacement: This is usually caused by an unevenly wound spool, or a spool that is not seated properly in the housing. Remove the spool, rewind the string evenly, and make sure it is aligned correctly when you reinsert it. If the vibration continues, check that the trimmer shaft is tightened properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How often should I change my weed eater string?

It depends on use frequency. For light residential use (once a week), replace every 2-3 months. For heavy commercial use or thick brush, replace every 1-2 weeks. If the string is frayed, broken, or not cutting effectively, replace it immediately.

2. Can I use any type of string for my weed eater?

No, always use the diameter recommended by your trimmer’s manufacturer. String that’s too thick can damage the motor, while string that’s too thin will break easily and won’t cut thick weeds. Check your owner’s manual for the correct size.

3. Why does my weed eater string keep getting tangled?

Tangles are almost always caused by improper winding. Make sure you wind the string in the correct direction, don’t cross lines on dual-line heads, and tuck loose ends into the spool notches. Cutting the string too long can also cause tangles, so stick to the recommended length.

4. Do I really need to wear safety gear when changing weed eater string?

Yes, absolutely. Weed eater string has razor-sharp edges that can cause deep cuts, and snapped string or debris can fly into your eyes while testing the trimmer. Protective gear prevents painful, avoidable injuries. (See Also:What Gas For Stihl Weed Eater)

5. Can I sharpen my weed eater string instead of replacing it?

No, trimmer string is designed to be disposable. Sharpening it makes it uneven, causing vibration and poor cutting performance. Replacement spools are inexpensive, so it’s faster and cheaper to replace worn string.

6. How do I know if my weed eater uses a bump-feed or fixed-line head?

Check your owner’s manual for the exact head type. If you don’t have it, look at the head: bump-feed heads have a twist-off spool cap on the bottom, and you tap the head on the ground to release string. Fixed-line heads have a side hole for threading string and no spool to wind.
