Understanding Your Hart Weed Eater’s Trimmer Line System

Before you start restringing, it’s helpful to understand how your Hart weed eater’s trimmer line system works, as different models use different mechanisms to feed line during operation. Hart designs three primary line feed systems for their consumer and commercial weed eaters, each with unique restringing requirements. Using the wrong process for your model can lead to jams, poor cutting performance, or even damage to the trimmer head’s internal components.

Hart trimmers are compatible with several types of trimmer line, each designed for specific use cases:

• Round line: The most common, all-purpose line, ideal for light grass, edging, and residential lawns. It’s affordable and easy to work with, but wears down quickly when cutting thick weeds or hitting debris.
• Square line: Has sharp edges that cut through thicker weeds and overgrown grass more efficiently than round line. It’s a good middle ground for most residential and light commercial use.
• Star/serrated line: Features a star-shaped or serrated cross-section that stays sharp longer and cuts through heavy brush and tough vegetation with ease. It’s best for commercial users or anyone with large properties with lots of overgrowth.
• Dual-line: Uses two parallel strands of line for increased cutting width and power. It’s ideal for users who want to trim and edge in a single pass, and works well for both residential and commercial use.

Trimmer line also comes in different diameters, typically 0.080 inches for residential models and 0.095 inches for mid-tier and commercial models. Using the wrong diameter can cause the line to slip in the head, strain the trimmer’s motor, or lead to frequent jams. Always check your owner’s manual or the bottom of your trimmer head for the recommended line size for your specific model.

When to Restring Your Hart Weed Eater

Restringing your trimmer at the right time will extend the life of both your line and your tool, and ensure consistent cutting performance. Look for these common signs that it’s time to restring:

• The line is shorter than 3 inches: Most Hart trimmer heads are designed to operate with 4 to 6 inches of line extending from the head. Shorter line will cut poorly, and bumping the head to feed more line may damage the spool if there’s no line left to advance.
• The line breaks frequently: Worn, frayed, or thin line will snap easily when cutting thick weeds or hitting small debris. If you’re replacing line more often than usual, it may be time to switch to a more durable line type or diameter.
• Cutting performance is poor: If your trimmer is tearing grass instead of cutting it cleanly, or struggling to cut through weeds that it used to handle easily, worn line is likely the culprit.
• You have to bump the head repeatedly to feed line: If you have to tap the head on the ground 3 or more times to get new line to extend, the spool may be jammed, or the line may be wound incorrectly. In most cases, restringing will fix this issue.
• Increased vibration during use: Unevenly wound line or a damaged spool can cause excessive vibration, which not only makes trimming uncomfortable but can also damage the trimmer’s engine over time.

As a general rule, restring your Hart weed eater as soon as you notice any of these signs, rather than waiting until the line is completely worn out. Restringing before the line is too short also prevents damage to the trimmer head’s spool and feed mechanism, which can be costly to repair.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Restringing a Hart weed eater requires only a few basic tools and materials, most of which you likely already have around the house:

• Replacement trimmer line: Make sure to purchase line that matches the diameter and shape recommended for your Hart model. You can find Hart-branded line at most hardware stores, or use high-quality aftermarket line that specifies compatibility with Hart trimmers.
• Scissors or line cutter: For cutting the line to the correct length. Many Hart trimmers come with a built-in line cutter on the shaft, so you may not need a separate tool.
• Work gloves: To protect your hands from sharp line edges and the metal components of the trimmer head.
• Flathead screwdriver: For removing the screws that hold the line cover in place on most Hart models.
• Cleaning brush: An old toothbrush or small scrub brush works well for clearing grass clippings and debris from the trimmer head before restringing.
• Optional: Trimmer head lubricant: A small amount of lubricant on the spool’s axle can help the line feed more smoothly and reduce wear on the internal components.

If you don’t want to measure and cut line yourself, many hardware stores sell pre-cut replacement line packs sized for popular Hart models, which can speed up the restringing process for beginners. (See Also:Can You Hang A Weed Eater Vertically)

Step-by-Step Guide to Restringing a Hart Weed Eater

The restringing process varies slightly depending on your Hart model’s line feed type, but all models follow the same basic prep steps first. Follow these universal safety and prep steps before starting any restringing process, then use the instructions below for your specific model to master How to Restring Hart Weed Eater? with ease:

1. Disconnect power to the trimmer: For gas-powered Hart models, remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug to prevent accidental starting. For cordless models, remove the battery pack from the trimmer’s base. For electric corded models, unplug the trimmer from the outlet. This is the most important safety step, as accidental starting can cause serious injury.
2. Prepare your work area: Lay the trimmer on a flat, stable surface with the cutting head facing up. If you’re working with a gas-powered model, make sure the engine is completely cool to avoid burns from hot metal or exhaust components. Work in a well-ventilated area if you’re working with a gas model.
3. Clear the trimmer head: Use the cleaning brush to remove any grass clippings, dirt, or old line fragments from the bottom and sides of the trimmer head. Debris can cause the line to jam or the spool to not seat correctly.
4. Remove the line cover: Use the flathead screwdriver to remove the 2 to 3 screws holding the line cover to the bottom of the trimmer head. Set the screws and cover aside in a safe place so you don’t lose them.

Once you’ve completed these prep steps, follow the instructions below for your specific Hart model’s line feed type.

Restringing Bump-Feed Hart Models

Bump-feed trimmers are the most common Hart models for residential use, and require you to tap the bottom of the head on the ground to release more line during operation. Follow these steps to restring a bump-feed Hart weed eater:

1. Pull out all old line from the spool, then press the release tabs on the sides of the trimmer head to lift the spool out. Set the spool aside.
2. Cut your new trimmer line to the length recommended for your model (8-12 feet for 0.080-inch line, 6-10 feet for 0.095-inch line).
3. Insert one end of the line into the center hole of the spool, then wind it around the spool in the direction of the arrows printed on the spool (almost always clockwise for Hart models). Leave 4-6 inches of line sticking out of the center hole.
4. Thread the loose end of the line through the eyelet on the bottom of the trimmer head, then through the side line port. Pull the line until the spool sits firmly in the head.
5. Reattach the line cover and secure it with the screws you removed earlier.
6. Pull the loose end of the line firmly 2-3 times to release it from the spool’s retention mechanism. Trim excess line so 4-5 inches extends from the head.
7. Reconnect power and test the trimmer by bumping the head on the ground 2-3 times to confirm line feeds correctly. If the line does not advance, check that it is wound in the correct direction and that the spool is seated properly.

Restringing Automatic-Feed Hart Models

Automatic-feed Hart trimmers advance line automatically when you release the trigger, so you don’t need to bump the head to feed more line. The restringing process is similar to bump-feed models, with a few small differences:

1. Remove the line cover and spool as you would for a bump-feed model, and clear out any old line.
2. Cut your new line to the length specified in your manual (usually 10-15 feet for automatic-feed models, as they require more line to feed automatically).
3. Insert one end of the line into the spool’s center hole, wind it clockwise, and leave 6-8 inches of line extending from the hole.
4. Thread the loose end through the guide holes on the trimmer head, following the arrows printed on the head to ensure correct placement.
5. Seat the spool firmly in the head, reattach the cover, and pull the loose end to release the line from the retention clip. Trim excess line so 5-6 inches extends from the head.
6. Reconnect power and test by holding the trigger for 3-5 seconds – line should advance automatically without bumping the head. If the line feeds too much or too little, adjust the small feed dial on the side of the head (if your model has one) to fine-tune performance.

Restringing Dual-Line Hart Models

Dual-line Hart trimmers use two strands of line for increased cutting power and width. The restringing process is slightly different from single-line models, as the spool has two separate winding sections:

1. Remove the line cover and dual-line spool, which has two separate winding sections for each line strand.
2. Cut two equal lengths of line (8-10 feet each for 0.080-inch dual line) to match your model’s requirements.
3. Insert the end of the first line into the first center hole of the spool, wind it clockwise around its designated section, and leave 4-5 inches extending from the hole. Repeat with the second line in the second center hole, winding in the same direction. Ensure the two strands do not overlap, as overlapping can cause jams and excessive vibration.
4. Align the two loose ends, thread both through the guide holes on the head, and seat the spool firmly in the head.
5. Reattach the cover, pull both lines firmly to release them from the retention mechanism, and trim excess so 5-6 inches of each strand extends from the head.
6. Test the trimmer to confirm both lines advance correctly when you bump the head (for bump-feed dual-line models) or automatically (for automatic-feed dual-line models). If one line feeds faster than the other, remove the spool and adjust the winding to ensure both strands are tensioned evenly.

Hart Trimmer Line Comparison Table

Choosing the right trimmer line for your Hart weed eater will improve cutting performance, reduce wear on the line and trimmer components, and save you time on restringing. Use the comparison table below to select the best line for your use case:

As a general rule, use the thinnest line diameter recommended for your model to reduce strain on the trimmer’s motor, and choose a line shape that matches the type of vegetation you cut most often.

Tips for Extending Trimmer Line Lifespan

With proper care, you can extend the life of your Hart trimmer line by 50% or more, reducing the frequency of restringing and saving money on replacement supplies. Follow these best practices to get the most out of your line: (See Also:How To Start My Husqvarna Weed Eater)

• Avoid cutting against hard surfaces: Hitting concrete, rocks, metal edging, or fence posts will wear down line extremely quickly. Keep your trimmer head a few inches away from hard surfaces when cutting, and use an edging guard if you need to trim close to hardscaping.
• Clean the trimmer head regularly: Grass clippings, dirt, and debris can build up in the line feed port and cause jams or increased friction on the spool. Wipe the head clean after each use, and do a deeper clean with a brush every few restringing cycles.
• Use the correct line for your use case: If you frequently cut thick weeds or brush, upgrade to a square or star-shaped line that holds up better to impact. For light grass, round line is more than sufficient and will last longer than heavier line shapes.
• Store line properly: Keep unused replacement line in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. Exposure to heat and UV light can make line brittle, causing it to break more easily during use.
• Don’t force the trimmer: If you’re cutting through thick brush or overgrown weeds, slow down and let the line do the work. Forcing the trimmer through tough vegetation puts extra strain on the line, causing it to break more frequently, and can also damage the trimmer’s motor.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Restringing

Even experienced DIYers make mistakes when restringing a weed eater, leading to jams, poor performance, or even damage to the tool. Avoid these common errors to make the process faster and easier:

• Winding the line in the wrong direction: This is the most common cause of line feed issues after restringing. If the line is wound counter-clockwise when it should be clockwise, it will not advance when you bump the head or pull the trigger. Always check the arrows printed on the spool before winding, and follow the indicated direction.
• Using the wrong line diameter: Line that is too thin will slip in the head and break frequently, while line that is too thick will strain the trimmer’s motor and cause jams. Always confirm the correct diameter for your model before purchasing replacement line.
• Overfilling the spool: Packing the spool tightly with too much line will cause the layers to overlap and jam, preventing the line from feeding. Leave a ¼-inch gap between the edge of the wound line and the side of the spool, and wind the line evenly without packing it down.
• Skipping safety steps: Failing to disconnect the spark plug or remove the battery before starting work can lead to accidental starting, which can cause serious lacerations or other injuries. Always disconnect power before touching the trimmer head.
• Letting the line get too short before restringing: If the line wears down to less than 1 inch, bumping the head to feed more line can cause the spool to hit the ground directly, damaging the spool and the trimmer head’s internal components. Restring as soon as the line is shorter than 3 inches to avoid this damage.
