Why String Replacement Matters

Understanding why string replacement matters helps you appreciate the importance of performing this task regularly. The cutting string on your Kobalt weed eater is responsible for slicing through grass, weeds, and small brush. When the string becomes dull, frayed, or too short, your trimmer loses efficiency, forcing you to apply more pressure or make multiple passes over the same area. This not only slows down your yard work but can also strain the motor or engine, reducing the overall lifespan of the tool. Additionally, tangled or unevenly wound string can cause the trimmer to vibrate excessively, making it uncomfortable to use and potentially damaging nearby plants or surfaces. By learning how to change string in Kobalt weed eater units properly, you maintain optimal cutting performance and extend the life of your equipment.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before you begin the process of changing the string, gather the necessary tools and materials to ensure a smooth and efficient experience. Most of the items listed below are commonly found in a household toolkit, which means you likely already have everything you need.

• A replacement spool or cutting line compatible with your Kobalt model
• A flathead screwdriver or the release button specific to your trimmer
• A pair of scissors or garden shears for trimming excess string
• A clean cloth or rag for wiping away debris
• Gloves to protect your hands from sharp string and dirt
• The user manual for your specific Kobalt weed eater model

Having these items ready before you start will prevent interruptions and reduce the risk of losing small parts during disassembly.

Identifying Your Kobalt Model

Kobalt produces a wide variety of weed eaters, each with slightly different mechanisms for string replacement. Before you attempt to change the string, take a moment to identify your exact model. The model number is typically printed on a label located on the motor housing or along the shaft of the trimmer. You can also find this information in the user manual or on the official Kobalt website. Knowing your model number is important because some units use a bump feed system, while others rely on an automatic feed or a fixed-line design. Additionally, certain models require specific string diameters, such as 0.065 inches, 0.080 inches, or 0.095 inches. Consulting your manual ensures you purchase the correct replacement parts and follow the proper disassembly steps for your particular trimmer.

Preparing the Trimmer

Proper preparation is the first step in learning how to change string in Kobalt weed eater units safely and effectively. Begin by ensuring the trimmer is completely powered off. For corded models, unplug the unit from the electrical outlet. For cordless models, remove the battery pack to eliminate any risk of accidental startup. If you are working with a gas-powered trimmer, turn off the engine and allow it to cool for at least 30 minutes to avoid burns from hot components. Once the trimmer is powered down, place it on a stable work surface or lay it flat on the ground. This positioning gives you better access to the string compartment and reduces the chance of the unit rolling or tipping during disassembly.

Removing the Old String

With your trimmer prepared and stable, the next step in changing the string is removing the old line. Most Kobalt weed eaters feature a string housing or spool that can be accessed by removing a cover or cap. To remove the old string, follow these general steps:

1. Locate the string release mechanism, which may be a button, latch, or screw-on cap on the trimmer head.
2. Press or turn the release mechanism to disengage the spool from the housing.
3. Carefully pull the spool out of the trimmer head, taking note of how the old string is threaded.
4. Use scissors or garden shears to cut away any remaining string that is still wrapped around the spool.
5. If the string is tangled, gently unwind it by hand or use a small tool to tease out the knots.

Taking a photo of the original string configuration before removal can be helpful if you need to refer back to the threading pattern later.

Choosing the Right String

Selecting the correct replacement string is crucial for maintaining your trimmer’s performance. The ideal string diameter depends on your Kobalt model and the thickness of the vegetation you typically encounter. Thicker string, such as 0.095 inches, is better suited for heavy-duty trimming tasks involving thick grass, weeds, or small branches. Thinner string, like 0.065 inches, works well for lighter duties such as edging along sidewalks and driveways. Using string that is too thick can overload the motor, while string that is too thin may break frequently. Always check your user manual or the product specifications to confirm the recommended string size for your trimmer.

Winding the New String

Once you have chosen the correct string, the next step in learning how to change string in Kobalt weed eater units is winding the new line onto the spool. Proper winding is essential to prevent tangles and ensure smooth operation. Follow these steps to wind the string correctly: (See Also:How To Rewire Weed Eater)

1. Cut a length of new string that is appropriate for your spool size, typically ranging from 6 to 10 feet.
2. Find the small hole or groove in the center of the spool where the string will anchor.
3. Insert one end of the string into the hole and pull it through until a short tail remains on the inside of the spool.
4. Begin winding the string around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrows molded into the plastic. Winding in the wrong direction can cause the string to tangle during use.
5. Apply even pressure as you wind to keep the coils tight and uniform.
6. Continue winding until the spool is full, leaving a tail of approximately 2 inches on the outside.
7. Trim any excess string with scissors to ensure a clean finish.

Properly wound string should lie flat against the spool without overlapping or bunching.

Installing the Spool

After winding the new string, the final mechanical step in changing the string is reinstalling the spool into the trimmer head. This process requires attention to detail to ensure the string feeds correctly during operation. Follow these steps to install the spool:

1. Align the spool with the housing, making sure the string tail exits through the small opening in the trimmer head.
2. Gently push the spool into the housing until it sits flush with the surrounding surface.
3. Engage the locking mechanism by pressing the release button, snapping the cap back into place, or tightening any screws as specified by your model.
4. Pull gently on the string tail to confirm that it feeds smoothly from the spool.
5. If the string does not feed freely, remove the spool and check for obstructions or incorrect threading.

A properly installed spool should rotate freely within the housing and allow the string to extend outward when needed.

Testing the Trimmer

Before putting your trimmer back into regular use, it is important to test the new string to ensure everything is functioning correctly. This testing phase is a critical part of learning how to change string in Kobalt weed eater units safely. Follow these steps to test your trimmer:

1. Reconnect the battery or plug in the corded model, ensuring all safety locks are engaged.
2. Hold the trimmer at a safe distance from any objects or surfaces.
3. Activate the trimmer and observe the string as it extends and retracts.
4. If the string fails to feed or becomes tangled, turn off the trimmer and inspect the spool for issues.
5. Make any necessary adjustments to the string tension or winding before continuing.

A successful test run confirms that your new string is properly installed and ready for use.

Automatic vs. Manual Feed Systems

Kobalt weed eaters come equipped with different types of string feed systems, each requiring a slightly different approach when changing the string. Understanding the differences between these systems is important for completing the task correctly.

The automatic feed system, often referred to as a bump feed, releases string automatically as the spool rotates. To change the string on this type of system, you must remove the spool, wind the new string in the correct direction, and reinstall it according to the manufacturer’s specifications. The manual feed system, on the other hand, requires you to manually pull the string through the trimmer head and secure it in place. Some models also feature a fixed-line design, where the string is pre-cut and installed without the need for winding. Each system has its own set of advantages and maintenance requirements, so it is important to identify which type your trimmer uses before beginning the replacement process.
