How Weed Eater Heads Work

Before diving into repairs, it helps to understand how your weed eater head functions. The head is the lower component of the trimmer that holds the cutting line or blade, spins at high speeds (typically 6,000–12,000 RPM for gas models) to cut weeds and grass, and connects to the tool’s engine or motor via a gear housing. Most heads include a spool that holds the cutting line, a feed mechanism that releases more line as it wears down, and a protective cover that keeps debris out of the internal components. The design varies slightly depending on the head type, but the core function is the same: deliver consistent, even cutting power for yard work.

There are four main types of weed eater heads, each suited for different use cases:

• Bump feed heads: The most common type for residential use. You tap the bottom of the head on the ground while the trimmer is running to release a small amount of cutting line as needed. They are easy to use and work well for most grass and weed trimming tasks.
• Automatic feed heads: These release line automatically as you trim, without needing to tap the head. They are more convenient for large jobs, but can waste line if not adjusted correctly.
• Fixed line heads: These require you to manually replace the entire piece of line when it wears down, rather than winding it onto a spool. They are more durable for thick brush and heavy-duty use, but take longer to reload.
• Blade attachment heads: Designed for cutting thick weeds, small saplings, and brush, these hold a metal or plastic blade instead of cutting line. They are not suitable for fine grass trimming, as they can damage lawns and hard surfaces.

Knowing your head type will help you source the correct replacement parts and follow the right repair steps for your specific model.

Signs Your Weed Eater Head Needs Repair or Replacement

Identifying head issues early can prevent small problems from turning into expensive repairs. Watch for these common signs that your head needs attention:

• Uneven cutting: If your trimmer leaves patches of uncut grass or cuts at an angle, the head may be misaligned, the spool may be damaged, or the cutting line may be worn or uneven.
• Line not feeding: If the line does not extend when you tap the head (for bump feed models) or while you trim (for automatic feed models), the feed mechanism is likely jammed with debris, the spool is installed incorrectly, or the line is tangled.
• Excessive vibration: Unusual shaking or vibration while running often points to a damaged spool, misaligned head, or worn gear teeth in the housing.
• Visible damage: Cracks in the head housing, broken spool tabs, or stripped mounting bolts are clear signs the head needs repair or replacement.
• Constant line breakage: If your line breaks every few minutes while trimming, it may be the wrong size or type for your head, the spool may be damaged, or the line may be wound incorrectly.
• Strange noises: Grinding, clicking, or squealing sounds coming from the head area usually indicate worn gear teeth, a jammed feed mechanism, or loose internal parts.

If you notice any of these issues, turn off your weed eater and inspect the head as soon as possible to avoid further damage to the tool.

Step-by-Step Guide to Fixing a Weed Eater Head

Most common weed eater head issues can be fixed in under an hour with basic tools and this simple process. Before you start, gather these supplies: flathead and Phillips screwdrivers, an adjustable wrench or socket set, work gloves, safety glasses, replacement cutting line (matched to your model’s size), a replacement spool or full head (if needed), a small parts container, a cleaning brush, and light machine oil or silicone spray (if recommended by your manufacturer). A torque wrench is optional but helpful for avoiding overtightened bolts.

Follow these steps for your specific model, and refer to your owner’s manual for any model-specific guidance.

Step 1: Safety First and Disassembly Prep

Before you touch any parts of the weed eater, disable the power source to avoid accidental startup. For gas-powered models, remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug. For electric corded models, unplug the tool from the outlet. For cordless models, remove the battery pack. Wear work gloves and safety glasses to protect yourself from sharp cutting line and flying debris during disassembly.

Lay the weed eater on a flat, stable surface. Locate the retaining bolts that hold the head cover in place (usually 2–4 small screws on the bottom or side of the head). Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove the bolts, and place them in your small parts container to avoid losing them. Gently pull the head cover away from the head housing to access the internal components. (See Also:How To String Dual Feed Weed Eater)

Step 2: Inspect the Head for Damage

Once the head is disassembled, carefully inspect all components for signs of wear or damage:

• Check the spool for cracks, worn grooves where the line sits, or broken tabs that hold it in place.
• Inspect the cutting line for fraying, brittleness, or uneven wear. If the line is old or damaged, it will need to be replaced.
• Check the feed mechanism for jams, broken springs, or worn parts that prevent line from extending.
• Look for cracks in the head housing, especially around mounting points and the line outlet.
• Inspect the gear housing (the part that connects the head to the trimmer shaft) for stripped teeth, excessive wear, or leaks (for lubricated models).
• Check the mounting bolts for cross-threading, rust, or damage.

Make a list of any issues you find to determine whether you can repair the existing head or need to replace it entirely.

Step 3: Fix Common Minor Issues

If your inspection reveals only minor damage, you can fix the head without full replacement. Address these common issues first:

• Worn or tangled line: Remove the old line from the spool, then wind new line onto the spool following your model’s specified pattern (most require winding in a clockwise direction, with equal length line on both sides of the spool). Leave 6–8 inches of line sticking out of the feed holes before reinstalling the spool.
• Jammed feed mechanism: Use a small brush or compressed air to remove grass, dirt, and debris from the feed mechanism and line outlet. If the feed spring is broken, replace it with a model-specific part.
• Damaged spool: If the spool has cracked or broken tabs but the head housing is intact, replace just the spool with a model-specific replacement. They typically cost $5–$15 and are easy to install.
• Loose bolts: Tighten any loose mounting or retention bolts, but avoid overtightening, which can strip threads or crack plastic parts.
• Debris buildup: Clean all grass, dirt, and gunk from the head housing and gear housing with a brush and mild soap if needed. Dry all parts completely before reassembly.

If the head housing or gear housing is cracked or damaged, skip to the replacement step below.

Step 4: Replace the Head if Needed

If your inspection found severe damage, such as a cracked head housing, stripped gear teeth, or broken mounting points, full head replacement is the most cost-effective solution. To replace the head:

1. Remove the old head by unscrewing the mounting bolts that attach it to the gear shaft. Keep track of any washers or spacers that sit between the head and the shaft.
2. Clean the gear shaft and mounting surface on the gear housing to remove any debris or old gasket material.
3. Align the new head with the gear shaft, making sure the mounting holes line up correctly. Insert the mounting bolts through the head and into the shaft.
4. Tighten the mounting bolts in a crisscross pattern to ensure even pressure. Use a torque wrench to tighten them to the manufacturer’s specified torque (usually 5–10 ft-lbs for most residential models) to avoid overtightening.
5. Make sure the head is seated flush against the gear housing with no gaps before moving on to reassembly.

Step 5: Reassemble and Test

Once repairs or replacement are complete, reassemble the head by reattaching the head cover and tightening the retaining bolts securely. Reconnect the spark plug wire or reinsert the battery, then start the weed eater and let it run for 30 seconds at idle speed. Watch for excessive vibration, wobbling, or strange noises coming from the head area.

Next, test the line feed mechanism: for bump feed heads, tap the bottom of the head on the ground while the trimmer is running to confirm line extends properly. For automatic feed heads, trim a patch of grass to check that line feeds automatically as it wears down. Finally, test the cutting performance on a patch of tall grass to confirm it cuts evenly and does not leave uncut patches. If you notice any issues, turn off the tool immediately and disassemble the head again to check for misalignment or loose parts.

When to Repair vs. Replace Your Weed Eater Head

One of the most common questions homeowners have is whether to fix a damaged head or buy a new one. The right choice depends on the severity of the damage, your budget, and how much time you want to spend on repairs. Use the comparison table below to help you decide:

As a general rule, if the head housing is intact and only the spool, line, or feed mechanism is damaged, repair is almost always the better choice. If the housing is cracked, the gear teeth are stripped, or multiple parts are failing, replacement will save you time and money in the long run, as major repairs are rarely worth the cost of a new head. Tips for Extending Your Weed Eater Head’s Lifespan

With proper care, most weed eater heads last 1–3 years, even with regular use. Follow these tips to extend your head’s life and avoid frequent repairs:

• Always use the cutting line size and type specified in your owner’s manual. Thicker line than recommended puts extra strain on the feed mechanism and gear housing, while thinner line will break constantly and wear down the spool faster.
• Clean the head and spool after each use to remove grass clippings, dirt, and debris that can jam the feed mechanism or cause corrosion on metal parts. A simple brush wipe-down is enough for most users.
• Store your weed eater in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. Prolonged exposure to heat and UV rays can make plastic head housings brittle and prone to cracking.
• Don’t overfill the spool with line. Follow the manufacturer’s capacity guidelines, as overfilling causes jams and puts extra stress on the feed mechanism. Most spools have a fill line indicator to show the correct amount of line to use.
• Use fresh, high-quality fuel in gas-powered models to prevent varnish and gunk from building up in the engine and gear housing. Old fuel can clog the gear system and cause premature wear to the head.
• Inspect the head before each use for signs of wear, loose bolts, or damage. Catching small issues early, like a slightly worn spool or tangled line, will prevent them from turning into expensive repairs later.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Fixing a Weed Eater Head

Even experienced DIYers make mistakes when repairing weed eater heads that can lead to further damage or injury. Avoid these common pitfalls:

• Overtightening mounting bolts: Overtightening is one of the most common mistakes, as it can strip the threads on the gear shaft or crack the plastic head housing. Always use a torque wrench if you have one, and tighten bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque setting. If you don’t have a torque wrench, tighten bolts until they are snug, then give them a quarter turn more—no further.
• Using incorrect replacement parts: Universal parts may look like they fit, but they often have slightly different dimensions that can cause poor performance or damage to your model. Always check your weed eater’s model number (usually printed on a label near the engine or on the shaft) and buy OEM or model-specific parts when possible.
• Skipping safety steps: Failing to disconnect the spark plug or battery can lead to accidental startup while you’re working on the head, which can cause serious lacerations from the spinning line or blade. Always disable the power source before starting any repair, even if you think the tool is off.
• Ignoring minor damage: A small crack in the head housing or a slightly worn spool may seem insignificant, but high vibration during use will worsen the damage quickly. Fix small issues as soon as you notice them to avoid more expensive repairs later.
• Misaligning the head during reassembly: If the head is not seated flush against the gear housing, it will wobble during use, cause uneven cutting, and damage the mounting bolts over time. Double-check that the head is aligned correctly and there are no gaps between the head and gear housing before tightening bolts fully.
• Winding line incorrectly: Winding line in the wrong direction or overfilling the spool will cause jams, poor line feeding, and constant line breakage. Always follow your model’s instructions for line winding pattern and capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace my weed eater head?

Most weed eater heads last 1–3 years with regular use and proper maintenance. You only need to replace the entire head if the housing is cracked, the gear teeth are stripped, or multiple components are failing at once. For minor wear like a worn spool or dull cutting line, you can replace just the small parts instead of the full head, which will extend the life of your existing head even longer.

Can I fix a cracked weed eater head?

Small surface cracks in plastic head housings can sometimes be repaired temporarily with epoxy designed for plastic, but this is not a long-term solution. The high vibration of the weed eater will worsen cracks over time, especially if they are near mounting points or the line outlet. For a permanent fix, replacement of the full head is recommended, especially if the crack is large or affects the head’s structural integrity.

What size line do I need for my weed eater head?

The correct line size is specified in your weed eater’s owner’s manual, and is usually printed on a label near the head or on the tool’s shaft. Common residential sizes range from 0.065 to 0.080 inches in diameter. Using line that is too thick will strain the feed mechanism and reduce cutting power, while line that is too thin will break constantly and wear down the spool faster. Always match the line size to your model’s specifications for best performance.

Why is my weed eater head wobbling after repair?

Wobbling is almost always caused by one of two issues: misalignment of the head during reassembly, or incorrectly tightened mounting bolts. Turn off the tool immediately, disassemble the head, and check that the head is seated flush against the gear housing with no gaps. Tighten the mounting bolts to the manufacturer’s specified torque, and make sure the spool is installed straight without tilting. If the wobble persists, check the gear shaft for damage or wear that may be preventing the head from sitting correctly. (See Also:How To Replace A Stihl Weed Eater Head)

How much does it cost to replace a weed eater head?

Universal replacement heads typically cost $20–$40, while OEM (original equipment manufacturer) heads designed for specific models range from $30–$60. If you only need to replace a spool or cutting line, those parts cost $5–$15. Repairing minor issues is almost always cheaper than replacing the full head, unless the head is severely damaged. For older weed eaters, it may be more cost-effective to replace the entire tool if the head and other components are worn out.

Can I use a universal weed eater head on my trimmer?

Many universal heads are designed to fit a wide range of weed eater models, but you should always check the compatibility list provided by the manufacturer before purchasing. Some models have unique mounting systems, gear shaft sizes, or feed mechanisms that require OEM parts for proper fit and function. Installing an incompatible head can lead to poor cutting performance, damage to the gear housing, or even tool failure during use, which can cause injury.

Conclusion

Fixing a weed eater head is a simple, rewarding DIY project that saves you money and extends the life of your yard equipment. Most common issues, like worn cutting line, jammed spools, or loose bolts, can be fixed in 15–30 minutes with basic tools, while even full head replacements cost a fraction of the price of a new weed eater.
