How Pressure Washers Work

Before diving into the reasons behind pulsing, it helps to understand the basic operation of a pressure washer. At its core, a pressure washer increases the pressure of a standard water supply to produce a high-velocity stream capable of removing dirt, grime, and stains from surfaces.

The system consists of several key components:

• Water inlet: Connects to a garden hose or direct water source.
• Water pump: Compresses incoming water to generate high pressure.
• Motor or engine: Powers the pump, either electrically or via a gas engine.
• Pressure hose: Transports pressurized water to the spray gun.
• Spray gun and nozzles: Control the direction and pattern of the water stream.
• Pressure regulator or unloader valve: Maintains consistent pressure during operation.

When everything functions correctly, water flows smoothly from the inlet through the pump and out the nozzle. However, if any part of this chain is disrupted, the system may struggle to maintain steady pressure, leading to pulsing.

What Causes Pressure Washer Pulsing

The phrase why does my pressure washer keep pulsing points to a symptom rather than a single cause. Pulsing can result from several factors, including inadequate water supply, blocked nozzles, faulty internal components, or a malfunctioning pressure regulator. Each of these issues disrupts the balance required for smooth operation.

In most cases, pulsing is a sign that the pressure washer is compensating for an imbalance in the system. For example, if the pump receives insufficient water, it may cycle on and off rapidly, creating surges that manifest as pulsing at the nozzle. Similarly, if the pressure regulator fails to maintain consistent output, the pump may overcompensate, causing fluctuations.

Water Supply Issues

One of the most frequent causes of pressure washer pulsing is an inadequate water supply. Your pressure washer relies on a steady flow of water to function properly, and any restriction in that flow can trigger instability in the system.

Insufficient Water Flow

If your water source does not deliver enough gallons per minute (GPM), the pump may begin to cavitate, which means it starts drawing air instead of water. This creates bubbles that collapse violently inside the pump, causing vibrations and irregular pressure output.

To check for this issue:

1. Ensure your garden hose is fully open and not kinked.
2. Use a hose with an inner diameter that matches or exceeds the inlet fitting on your pressure washer.
3. Confirm that your water source can supply the minimum GPM rating listed on your pressure washer’s specifications.

Air in the System

Air trapped in the water line or pump can also cause pulsing. Air compresses differently than water, so when the pump encounters air pockets, it cannot maintain consistent pressure.

To remove air from the system:

1. Turn off the pressure washer and disconnect the high-pressure hose.
2. Open the trigger gun and let water run until it flows steadily without sputtering.
3. Reconnect the hose and slowly reintroduce pressure.

Nozzle and Attachment Problems

The nozzle and attached accessories play a crucial role in maintaining proper backpressure. If the nozzle is clogged or the wrong size is used, the system may not operate under optimal conditions.

Clogged Nozzle

Dirt, debris, or mineral buildup can obstruct the nozzle orifice, restricting water flow and increasing backpressure. This forces the pump to work harder, potentially causing pulsing.

To clean the nozzle:

1. Turn off the pressure washer and release all pressure.
2. Remove the nozzle tip and soak it in a solution of white vinegar or commercial descaler.
3. Use a soft brush or compressed air to clear any remaining debris.
4. Rinse thoroughly and reinstall.

Incorrect Nozzle Size

Using a nozzle with an orifice that is too small increases backpressure beyond the pump’s design limits. Conversely, a nozzle that is too large reduces backpressure, causing the pump to cycle excessively.

Always consult your pressure washer manual to select the correct nozzle size for your unit’s PSI and GPM ratings. (See Also:How To Change A Pressure Washer Nozzle)

Internal Component Failures

Internal components such as seals, O-rings, valves, and pistons are subject to wear over time. When these parts degrade, they can introduce leaks or inconsistencies that lead to pulsing.

Worn Pump Seals and O-Rings

Seals and O-rings prevent water from leaking out of the pump and also maintain internal pressure. If they crack or deteriorate, water may escape internally, reducing efficiency and causing pressure fluctuations.

Signs of worn seals include:

• Water dripping from the pump housing.
• A noticeable drop in performance.
• Visible cracks or damage around fittings.

Faulty Check Valves

Check valves ensure water flows in only one direction through the pump. If a check valve becomes stuck or damaged, it can allow water to flow backward, disrupting pressure balance and causing pulsing.

Replacing faulty check valves usually requires disassembling the pump, which is best left to professionals unless you have experience with pressure washer repair.

Pressure Regulator Malfunction

The pressure regulator, sometimes integrated with the unloader valve, plays a critical role in maintaining consistent output pressure. If this component fails, the pump may not receive the feedback it needs to adjust its operation smoothly.

Unloader Valve Issues

The unloader valve redirects excess water flow when the trigger gun is closed, preventing pressure from building up unnecessarily. If the unloader valve sticks or leaks, the pump may continue running at full pressure even when not needed, causing surging.

Signs of unloader valve problems include:

• The engine or motor continues to run after releasing the trigger.
• Pulsing or surging during operation.
• Unusual noise or vibration from the pump.

Adjusting the Pressure Regulator

Many pressure washers come with an adjustable pressure regulator. If the setting is too high or too low, it can contribute to pulsing. To adjust:

1. Locate the adjustment screw or knob on the pump or motor assembly.
2. Start the pressure washer and observe the behavior.
3. Turn the adjustment screw clockwise to increase pressure or counterclockwise to decrease it.
4. Make small adjustments and test after each change.

Refer to your owner’s manual for specific instructions related to your model.

Diagnosing the Problem

Properly diagnosing why your pressure washer keeps pulsing involves a systematic approach. Begin with the simplest and most accessible checks before moving on to more complex internal repairs.

Start by asking yourself a few key questions:

• Is the water supply adequate and unrestricted?
• Are the nozzle and hoses free of clogs?
• Does the pulsing occur only under load or continuously?
• Have there been any recent changes to the setup or environment?

Answering these questions helps narrow down the likely causes and guides you toward the appropriate solution.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Guide

Follow this structured troubleshooting guide to identify and address the source of pulsing in your pressure washer:

1. Check the water supply: Ensure the water source is fully open and capable of delivering the required GPM. Replace kinked hoses and consider using a larger diameter hose if necessary.
2. Inspect the inlet filter: Remove and clean the inlet filter screen to eliminate debris that may restrict water flow.
3. Verify nozzle condition: Remove the nozzle and inspect for clogs. Clean or replace as needed. Confirm the nozzle size matches your pressure washer’s specifications.
4. Release trapped air: Disconnect the high-pressure hose, open the trigger gun, and allow water to flow freely until no more air sputters out.
5. Examine the pressure hose: Look for kinks, cuts, or signs of wear that could restrict flow or cause pressure drops.
6. Test the unloader valve: Observe whether the pump continues to run after releasing the trigger. If so, the unloader valve may need adjustment or replacement.
7. Check the pressure regulator: If adjustable, fine-tune the setting according to the manufacturer’s guidelines. If non-adjustable, consider professional servicing.
8. Inspect internal components: Look for visible signs of wear on seals, O-rings, and pistons. Replace worn parts promptly to prevent further damage.
9. Run a test cycle: After addressing each potential issue, run the pressure washer again to confirm whether the pulsing has stopped.

If pulsing persists after completing these steps, it may indicate a deeper mechanical fault requiring professional attention. (See Also:How To Drain Gas From Pressure Washer)

Prevention and Best Practices

Regular maintenance and mindful usage are the best ways to prevent pressure washer pulsing. Implementing these best practices will keep your machine running smoothly and reduce the likelihood of disruptive issues.

Regular Maintenance

Schedule routine checks of all critical components:

• Clean or replace the inlet filter every 25 to 50 hours of use.
• Inspect hoses and connections for wear or damage before each use.
• Store the pressure washer in a dry environment to protect internal components from moisture and corrosion.

Ensure a Proper Water Source

Always connect to a water source that meets or exceeds your pressure washer’s GPM requirements. Avoid using excessively long or narrow hoses that restrict flow.

Use Correct Nozzles and Accessories

Select nozzles based on your pressure washer’s specifications and the task at hand. Never force a nozzle onto a fitting it was not designed for, as this can damage both components.

Winterize Your Pressure Washer

If you live in a region with freezing temperatures, always drain the water system after each season of use. Residual water left in the pump can freeze and crack internal components.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced users can fall into habits that contribute to pressure washer pulsing. Recognizing and correcting these mistakes can save time, money, and frustration.

Ignoring Water Flow Requirements

Many users assume that any standard garden hose will suffice. However, using a hose with insufficient diameter or flow capacity starves the pump and leads to cavitation and pulsing.

Over-Tightening Connections

While secure connections are important, over-tightening fittings can deform O-rings or damage threaded connections, creating leaks that cause pressure instability.

Skipping Pre-Rinse Steps

Failing to rinse surfaces before applying detergent can overload the system with debris, increasing the risk of nozzle clogs and pressure fluctuations.

Not Adjusting Pressure Settings

Using maximum pressure for every job puts unnecessary strain on the pump and increases the chance of component failure. Always match the pressure to the surface being cleaned.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my pressure washer pulse only when the trigger is released?

This usually indicates a problem with the unloader valve. When the trigger is released, the unloader valve should redirect water flow to prevent pressure buildup. If it fails to do so, the pump may cycle continuously, resulting in pulsing even when not actively spraying. (See Also:How To Use Detergent With Pressure Washer)

Can a dirty air filter cause pressure washer pulsing?

Yes, a dirty air filter can restrict airflow to the engine, reducing its ability to power the pump consistently. This can lead to uneven operation and pulsing. Always keep the air filter clean and replace it according to the manufacturer’s schedule.

Is pulsing normal for electric pressure washers?

Some minor pulsing may occur during startup as the system primes itself. However, persistent or severe pulsing is not normal and typically signals an issue with the water supply, nozzle, or internal components.

How often should I replace the O-rings in my pressure washer?

O-rings should be inspected regularly and replaced annually or whenever signs of wear appear. Cracked, brittle, or misshapen O-rings compromise the seal and can cause pressure loss or pulsing.

What should I do if my pressure washer pulses despite following all troubleshooting steps?

If basic troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, the problem likely lies within internal pump components such as check valves, pistons, or seals. These repairs require specialized tools and knowledge, so contact an authorized service center for professional assistance.
