What Happened to Craftsman Lawn Tractors?
In the world of lawn care equipment, few brands have as rich a history as Craftsman. Founded in 1927 by Sears, Roebuck and Co., the company was once synonymous with high-quality, reliable lawn tractors. However, over the years, the brand’s fortunes have waxed and waned, leaving many consumers wondering what happened to Craftsman lawn tractors.
Changes in Ownership
The first major change occurred in 2017 when Sears Holdings Corporation filed for bankruptcy and began liquidating its assets. As a result, the Craftsman brand was sold to Stanley Black & Decker, a leading manufacturer of power tools and outdoor equipment. This new ownership marked a significant shift in the brand’s direction, as Stanley Black & Decker sought to revitalize the Craftsman brand and make it more competitive in the market.
- The sale of Craftsman to Stanley Black & Decker led to a significant investment in research and development, resulting in the introduction of new, more advanced lawn tractor models.
- However, the transition was not without its challenges, as some long-time Craftsman dealers and distributors struggled to adapt to the new ownership and product offerings.
Shift to Private Labeling
Another key development in the history of Craftsman lawn tractors was the shift towards private labeling. In 2018, Stanley Black & Decker announced that it would be transitioning the Craftsman brand to private labeling, meaning that the brand’s products would no longer be manufactured by Stanley Black & Decker itself, but rather by a third-party manufacturer. This move was intended to reduce costs and increase efficiency, but it also raised concerns among some consumers about the quality and reliability of the brand’s products.
