Which Makita Leaf Blower Is Best? LXT vs XGT Series

Introduction

Fall leaf cleanup is one of the most time-consuming and physically demanding chores for homeowners, property managers, and landscaping professionals alike. A high-quality leaf blower can cut cleanup time in half, turning hours of raking into minutes of quick, efficient work. Makita is one of the most trusted names in power tools, known for its durable, high-performance equipment that holds up to heavy use year after year. But for shoppers trying to answer the question Which Makita Leaf Blower Is Best? for their needs, the brand’s two core cordless platforms—LXT and XGT—can be confusing to navigate. Both lines offer reliable, long-lasting tools, but they are designed for different use cases, budgets, and existing tool ecosystems. This guide will break down the key differences between Makita’s LXT and XGT leaf blower lineups, review top models for each series, provide a side-by-side comparison, and walk you through a step-by-step process to pick the perfect blower for your yard, workload, and budget. By the end, you’ll have all the information you need to make an informed purchase and stop wasting time on inefficient cleanup methods.

Makita’s LXT vs XGT Power Platforms Explained

To understand which Makita leaf blower is best for your needs, you first need to understand the two core power platforms that underpin the brand’s cordless tool lineup. Each platform is designed for a specific set of users and use cases, with differences in power, battery life, cost, and compatibility. Both LXT and XGT blowers use Makita’s proprietary brushless motor technology, which eliminates the friction and heat of brushed motors, resulting in longer runtime, longer tool lifespan, and quieter operation. Brushless motors also adjust power output automatically based on the task at hand, so you get maximum efficiency when clearing light debris and extra power when tackling tough clumps without draining the battery unnecessarily.

Launched in 2005, Makita’s 18V LXT (Lithium-Ion eXtreme Technology) platform is the brand’s most established cordless system, with more than 300 tools compatible with its batteries. LXT tools use 18V lithium-ion batteries that range from 2.0Ah to 6.0Ah, offering a balance of power, runtime, and affordability. The platform is ideal for DIY users, homeowners, and light commercial contractors who need reliable performance for everyday tasks without the cost or weight of higher-voltage systems. LXT batteries are widely available, and the platform’s massive ecosystem means you can use the same batteries across dozens of Makita tools, from drills to circular saws to leaf blowers.

Introduced in 2020, Makita’s 40V XGT (eXtreme Gust Technology) platform is the brand’s next-generation cordless system, built to deliver professional-grade power for heavy-duty tasks. XGT tools use 40V lithium-ion batteries that offer higher voltage, faster charging, better heat management, and longer runtime than comparable LXT batteries. The platform is designed for professional landscapers, property managers with large acreage, and DIY users who need maximum power for tough jobs like clearing wet, matted leaves, small branches, and heavy debris. While the XGT ecosystem is still growing, it now includes over 100 tools, and Makita continues to expand the lineup each year. Unlike LXT batteries, XGT batteries are not cross-compatible with LXT tools, so investing in the XGT platform is a longer-term commitment for users who need high performance.

Key Factors to Answer “Which Makita Leaf Blower Is Best?”

There is no one-size-fits-all answer to Which Makita Leaf Blower Is Best?, as the right model depends on your unique needs, existing tool collection, and budget. Before diving into specific model reviews, evaluate these critical factors to narrow down your options:

• Yard size and debris type: Small yards (under 1/4 acre) with mostly dry leaves only need a low-to-mid powered blower, while large yards (over 1 acre) with wet leaves, small twigs, and heavy debris require a high-power model. Measure your yard’s square footage and take note of the types of debris you typically need to clear to gauge the power you need. For small yards, a blower with 100-140 CFM of air volume and 100-120 mph of air speed is sufficient. For medium yards between 1/4 and 1 acre, opt for 140-170 CFM and 130-150 mph. For large yards over 1 acre, choose a blower with 170+ CFM and 150+ mph of air speed.
• Existing Makita battery ecosystem: If you already own 18V LXT batteries and chargers, sticking to the LXT platform will save you hundreds of dollars in extra battery and charger costs. If you are starting fresh or need more power for heavy use, the XGT platform is a better long-term investment, as its batteries deliver more runtime and power per charge.
• Runtime needs: Estimate how long you typically spend clearing leaves per session. For sessions under 30 minutes, a 2.0Ah or 4.0Ah battery is sufficient for most LXT models. For longer sessions, opt for a 5.0Ah or higher capacity battery. XGT batteries are more efficient, so a 5.0Ah XGT battery will last 30-50% longer than a 5.0Ah LXT battery on a single charge.
• Noise level: If you live in a neighborhood with close neighbors or local noise ordinances, opt for a quieter model. LXT blowers typically operate at 61-63 dB, while XGT blowers run at 63-65 dB, a small but noticeable difference for extended use.
• Weight and ergonomics: If you have arthritis, limited upper body strength, or need to use the blower for long periods, a lighter model will reduce fatigue. LXT blowers typically weigh 5-6 lbs, while XGT blowers weigh 6-7.5 lbs due to their larger motors and batteries.
• Extra features: Some Makita blowers come with variable speed triggers, turbo modes for tough debris, vacuum/mulch attachments, or built-in LED lights for low-light cleanup. Prioritize features that match your specific needs to avoid paying for functions you will never use.
• Budget: Bare tool (no battery or charger) LXT blowers start at around $99, while bare tool XGT blowers start at around $149. Kits that include batteries and chargers cost $200-$300 for LXT and $300-$450 for XGT. Remember that batteries make up 60-70% of the total cost of a cordless blower, so factor in the cost of additional batteries if you don’t already own compatible ones.
• Warranty coverage: Makita offers a 3-year limited warranty on all LXT and XGT cordless tools, and a 1-year warranty on gas-powered models. A longer warranty provides peace of mind that your investment is protected against defects and premature wear.

The kit retails for around $399, and the faster charging and longer runtime make it a great choice for users who need to clear large areas quickly without long charging breaks.

For users with the heaviest cleanup needs, the Makita XBU08Z high-volume blower is the top-tier option in the XGT lineup. It delivers a maximum air speed of 169 mph and air volume of 185 CFM, enough to move even wet, matted leaves, small branches, and heavy debris in a single pass. It weighs 7.2 lbs, and includes a variable speed trigger, turbo mode, and a built-in LED light that illuminates your work area for early morning or late evening cleanup sessions. A 6.0Ah XGT battery delivers up to 60 minutes of runtime on a single charge, and the rapid charger fills a 6.0Ah battery in 45 minutes. The bare tool retails for around $199, and while it is the most expensive Makita leaf blower, its unmatched power and runtime make it worth the investment for users who need to clear large areas quickly and efficiently. The XGT platform is still relatively new, but Makita is expanding the lineup rapidly, with new tools added every year, making it a smart long-term investment for users who plan to expand their Makita tool collection.

LXT vs XGT: Side-by-Side Comparison

To make it easier to decide which platform is right for you, we’ve compiled a side-by-side comparison of the core features of Makita’s LXT and XGT leaf blower lineups. This table highlights the key differences in power, runtime, cost, and ideal use cases to help you answer Which Makita Leaf Blower Is Best? for your needs.

As the table shows, XGT blowers deliver significantly more power and runtime than LXT models, but at a higher upfront cost. Another key difference between the two platforms is battery efficiency: XGT 40V batteries deliver more power per amp hour than LXT 18V batteries, meaning a 5.0Ah XGT battery lasts 30-50% longer than a 5.0Ah LXT battery on a single charge. This makes XGT blowers a better choice for users who need to clear large areas without access to a charging station. Additionally, XGT batteries charge faster than LXT batteries, reducing downtime between cleanup sessions. When deciding between LXT and XGT, the biggest factor is your existing tool ecosystem. If you already own LXT batteries, the cost savings of sticking with LXT are significant, as a single 5.0Ah LXT battery costs around $100, while a 5.0Ah XGT battery costs around $130. For users who need to clear large areas quickly or tackle heavy debris, the extra power and runtime of XGT models are worth the higher upfront cost. For casual users with small yards, LXT models offer more than enough performance at a lower price point.

Step-by-Step Guide to Selecting Your Makita Leaf Blower

If you’re still unsure which model is right for you, follow this simple step-by-step guide to narrow down your options and find the perfect Makita leaf blower for your needs.

1. Assess your yard size and debris type. Start by measuring your yard’s square footage and taking note of the types of debris you typically need to clear. For yards under 1/4 acre with mostly dry leaves, a blower with 100-140 CFM of air volume and 100-120 mph of air speed is sufficient, making an LXT model like the XBU02Z a great choice. For medium yards between 1/4 and 1 acre with mixed dry and wet leaves, opt for a blower with 140-170 CFM and 130-150 mph of air speed, such as the XBU05Z XGT. 3. Determine your runtime needs. Estimate how long you typically spend clearing leaves per session. For sessions under 30 minutes, a 4.0Ah battery is enough for LXT models, while a 5.0Ah XGT battery will last 45 minutes. For sessions over 45 minutes, opt for a 5.0Ah or higher capacity battery, or purchase a second battery to swap out when the first runs low to avoid interruptions.
4. Prioritize the features you need. Make a list of the features that matter most to you. If you often clean up in low light, opt for an XGT model with a built-in LED light like the XBU08Z. If you want to mulch leaves, choose a model with a vacuum attachment like the XBU04PT LXT kit. If noise is a concern, stick with an LXT model, which is slightly quieter than XGT models. Avoid paying for features you will never use to keep costs down.
5. Set and stick to your budget. Determine how much you are willing to spend, including the cost of batteries and chargers if you don’t already own them. Bare tool LXT blowers start at $99, while bare tool XGT blowers start at $149. Kits with batteries and chargers cost $200-$300 for LXT and $300-$450 for XGT. If you are on a tight budget, the LXT XBU02Z bare tool is the most affordable option, while the XBU08Z XGT is worth the extra cost for users who need maximum power.

Pro Tips for Maintaining Your Makita Leaf Blower

Proper maintenance will extend the lifespan of your Makita leaf blower by years, keep it running at peak performance, and prevent costly repairs. Follow these simple tips to keep your blower in top condition:

• Clean the air intake and fan after each use. After every cleanup session, turn the blower off and remove the battery, then use a soft brush or compressed air to remove leaves, dust, and debris from the air intake and fan. Built-up debris reduces airflow, decreases power, and can damage the motor over time.
• Store batteries properly. Remove the battery from the blower after each use and store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Avoid leaving batteries on the charger for more than 24 hours after a full charge, as this can reduce their lifespan. For long-term storage, keep batteries at a 40-60% charge level to prevent degradation.
• Inspect the blower tube and connections regularly. Check the blower tube, handle, and battery connection points for cracks, loose screws, or worn parts before each use. Replace damaged parts immediately to avoid further damage to the tool or injury during use.
• Use only Makita-approved batteries and chargers. Using third-party or off-brand batteries and chargers can damage the blower’s motor, reduce performance, and void your Makita warranty. Stick to official Makita parts to ensure safety and optimal performance.
• Keep the blower dry and avoid heavy rain exposure. While Makita blowers are water-resistant, they are not waterproof, and exposure to heavy rain can damage the motor and electrical components. If the blower gets wet, wipe it down with a dry cloth and let it air dry completely before storing or using it again.
• For gas-powered Makita blowers, perform regular engine maintenance. If you own a gas-powered Makita leaf blower, change the oil and air filter every 25 hours of use, use fresh fuel with a stabilizer to prevent engine damage, and clean the spark plug regularly to keep the engine running smoothly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Buying or Using a Makita Blower

Many users make avoidable mistakes when buying or using their Makita leaf blower that reduce performance, shorten the tool’s lifespan, or lead to unnecessary costs. Avoid these common pitfalls to get the most out of your purchase:

• Buying a blower that’s too powerful (or not powerful enough) for your needs. Overspending on a high-power XGT model for a small yard with only dry leaves is unnecessary, as an LXT model will handle the job just fine for half the cost. Conversely, buying a low-power LXT model for a large yard with heavy, wet debris will lead to frustration and longer cleanup times. Use the step-by-step guide above to match the blower’s power to your specific needs.
• Ignoring battery ecosystem compatibility. If you already own a collection of 18V LXT Makita tools, buying an XGT blower means you will need to purchase an entirely new set of batteries and chargers, adding hundreds of dollars to your total cost. Always consider your existing tool collection before investing in a new platform.
• Skipping regular maintenance. Failing to clean the blower’s air intake and fan regularly can lead to reduced airflow, shorter battery life, and eventual motor failure. A 5-minute cleaning after each use will keep your blower running like new for years.
• Using the blower for tasks it’s not designed for. Leaf blowers are designed to move lightweight debris like leaves, grass clippings, and small twigs. Do not use your Makita blower to move large rocks, wet concrete, or other heavy debris, as this can damage the motor and fan, leading to costly repairs.
• Skipping personal protective equipment (PPE). Even quiet blowers can cause hearing damage with extended use, and blowing debris can kick up dust, dirt, and small rocks that can injure your eyes. Always wear hearing protection and safety glasses when using your leaf blower.
• Overlooking the cost of replacement batteries. Batteries are the most expensive part of a cordless blower, and they will degrade over time after 2-3 years of regular use. Factor in the cost of replacement batteries when calculating the total cost of ownership, as a $99 LXT blower will cost an extra $100-$150 for a replacement 5.0Ah battery every few years, while a $149 XGT blower will cost $120-$180 for a replacement 5.0Ah XGT battery.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Makita LXT and XGT batteries interchangeable?

No, Makita LXT 18V and XGT 40V batteries are not directly interchangeable. The two platforms use different voltage levels and communication protocols, so there is no official Makita adapter that allows cross-compatibility. Using third-party adapters to power an LXT tool with an XGT battery (or vice versa) is not recommended, as it can damage the tool or battery, reduce performance, and void your Makita warranty. If you want to use both platforms, you will need to purchase separate batteries and chargers for each system.

Which Makita leaf blower is best for large, acreage-sized yards?

For large yards over 1 acre, or properties with heavy, wet debris and many trees, the Makita XBU08Z 40V XGT High-Volume Blower is the best choice. It delivers 185 CFM of air volume and 169 mph of air speed, enough to move even wet, matted leaves and small branches in a single pass. Pair it with a 6.0Ah or higher XGT battery for up to 60 minutes of runtime, which is enough to clear even the largest properties without recharging.

Are Makita leaf blowers worth the premium price?

Yes, Makita leaf blowers are worth the investment for most users, especially those who need a reliable tool for regular use. Makita tools are built with high-quality, durable components, and their brushless motors last 2-3 times longer than brushed motors found in cheaper off-brand models. All Makita cordless tools come with a 3-year limited warranty, and gas models come with a 1-year warranty, providing peace of mind that your investment is protected against defects and premature wear. While the upfront cost is higher than off-brand options, the longer lifespan, lower maintenance costs, and consistent performance make Makita blowers more cost-effective over time. For users who only need a blower once or twice a year, a cheaper off-brand model may be sufficient, but for regular users, Makita is a reliable, long-lasting choice.

Can I use an XGT battery in an LXT blower with an aftermarket adapter?

While aftermarket adapters exist that claim to allow XGT batteries to power LXT tools, we strongly recommend against using them. These adapters are not certified by Makita, are not tested for safety or performance, and can damage the blower’s motor or battery, leading to costly repairs. Additionally, they often do not support the full communication between the battery and tool, resulting in reduced power, shorter runtime, and error messages. Using third-party adapters will also void your Makita warranty, so it is not worth the risk. Always use only Makita-approved batteries and chargers for your blower to ensure safety, optimal performance, and warranty coverage.
