What Is a Pressure Washer and How Does It Work?
A pressure washer is a mechanical sprayer that uses high-pressure water to remove loose material, stains, and contaminants from surfaces. Electric and gas-powered models both exist, with gas units typically producing higher pressure ratings suitable for heavy-duty jobs. The core components include a motor or engine, a pump, a high-pressure hose, a spray gun, and interchangeable nozzle tips.
When you power on the unit, the pump draws water from a supply source, pressurizes it, and forces it through the hose to the nozzle. Different nozzle tips adjust the spray angle, from a wide fan for general rinsing to a narrow pinpoint stream for stubborn grime. Understanding this basic mechanism helps explain why the cleaning fluid you use matters so much. The pressurized water acts as a delivery system, and the chemical or soap you add determines what happens when that high-pressure stream contacts the target surface.
What to Put in a Pressure Washer? — The Basics
When asking what to put in a pressure washer, the simplest answer is water, but that is only the starting point. Most pressure washer systems can accept several categories of cleaning agents, and the right choice depends on the task at hand. Here are the basic categories:
- Plain water — suitable for light rinsing and removing loose debris.
- Pressure washer detergent — specially formulated soaps designed for use in pressure washer systems.
- Surface-specific cleaners — products made for wood, concrete, vehicles, or industrial applications.
- Chemical additives — agents like degreasers, rust removers, or algaecides used for targeted cleaning.
- Water conditioning additives — water softeners or anti-foam agents that protect the machine itself.
Each category serves a distinct purpose, and knowing when to use which one separates a casual user from someone who gets consistently excellent results. Always check your pressure washer manufacturer’s guidelines before introducing any chemical into the system, as incompatible fluids can damage seals, pumps, and internal components.
Types of Pressure Washer Soap and Detergent
Not all soaps are created equal, and using regular dish soap or household detergent in a pressure washer can cause foaming, clogging, or damage. Pressure washer detergents are specifically formulated to work under high pressure without creating excessive foam that could back up into the pump. Here are the main types you will encounter:
General-Purpose Detergent
General-purpose pressure washer detergent is the most versatile option. It works well on siding, brick, concrete, and many other exterior surfaces. These detergents are typically biodegradable and designed to cut through common dirt, mildew, and environmental grime without being overly harsh. They are a safe default choice when you are unsure about what cleaning agent to use.
Wood-Safe Cleaner
Wood surfaces such as decks, fences, and outdoor furniture require specially formulated cleaners. Wood-safe detergents are gentler and often contain ingredients that protect the wood fibers while lifting dirt and mold. Using an aggressive industrial cleaner on wood can strip finishes, discolor the surface, or cause splintering under high pressure.
Concrete and Brick Cleaner
Porous surfaces like concrete driveways, patios, and brick walls trap deep stains from oil, grease, rust, and weathering. Dedicated concrete cleaners have a thicker consistency and stronger chemical composition that penetrates into pores to lift embedded stains. These are often alkaline-based formulas that break down oil and grease effectively.
Vehicle and RV Soap
Automotive-grade pressure washer soaps are designed to clean cars, trucks, boats, and RVs without stripping wax or damaging paint. These soaps are pH-neutral and often contain surfactants that lift road grime, bug residue, and environmental fallout gently. They produce low foam to prevent buildup in the machine’s detergent system.
Industrial-Strength Cleaner
For commercial and industrial applications, heavy-duty cleaners are available that can tackle hydraulic fluid, petroleum residues, and industrial coatings. These require careful handling and appropriate protective equipment.
Water Temperature: Cold vs. Hot
An important but often overlooked aspect of what to put in a pressure washer is water temperature. Most residential pressure washers are designed for cold water only. Attempting to run hot water through a cold-water machine can damage seals, valves, and pump components due to thermal expansion.
Hot water pressure washers do exist and are specifically engineered to handle heated water, typically up to around 200 degrees Fahrenheit. Hot water units excel at cutting through grease, oil, and industrial grime because heat accelerates the chemical reaction of cleaning agents. If you need hot water cleaning capability, make sure your machine is rated for it. Never introduce boiling water or steam directly into a pressure washer not designed for it. For cold water machines, the cleaning effectiveness comes almost entirely from pressure and the chemical additives you use. This is why selecting the right detergent becomes even more critical when you cannot rely on water temperature to assist with the cleaning process.
Additives and Chemical Agents
Beyond standard detergents, several chemical additives can enhance your pressure washer’s performance for specific tasks. Understanding these helps you answer the question of what to put in a pressure washer with greater precision.
Degreasers
Degreasers are alkaline-based chemicals designed to break down oils, fats, and petroleum-based substances. They are essential for cleaning garage floors, engine parts, driveways with oil stains, and kitchen exterior surfaces. When using a degreaser, always follow dilution ratios carefully, as concentrated degreasers can damage painted surfaces and plant life.
Rust Removers
Rust removers contain acidic compounds like oxalic acid or phosphoric acid that dissolve iron oxide deposits. These are useful for cleaning metal surfaces, wrought iron furniture, and concrete stained by rust. However, rust removers can be hazardous to skin and eyes, so protective gloves and eyewear are mandatory during use.
Algaecide and Mildewcide
For surfaces prone to biological growth, such as shaded concrete, wooden decks, or pool decks, algaecide additives kill mold, algae, and mildew at the root. These are often added to the detergent tank alongside a standard cleaning solution. They prevent regrowth longer than simply scrubbing the surface alone.
Anti-Foam Agents
Anti-foam agents are sometimes necessary when using certain detergents that produce more foam than the machine’s siphon system can handle. Adding a small amount of anti-foam prevents foam from entering the pump and causing cavitation or pressure loss. This is a behind-the-scenes additive that protects your machine rather than cleaning the target surface.
How to Choose the Right Fluid for Your Pressure Washer
Choosing the right cleaning fluid involves matching the agent to three key factors: the surface material, the type of contaminant, and your machine’s specifications. Start by identifying what surface you are cleaning and what you are trying to remove. A concrete driveway stained with motor oil requires a different approach than a wooden deck covered in mildew.
Next, consult your pressure washer’s manual. Many manufacturers list approved detergents and warn against specific chemical types that could void warranties. Electric pressure washers, in particular, often have more sensitive pump systems that cannot handle highly acidic or caustic solutions.
Finally, consider environmental and safety factors. Choose biodegradable detergents when possible, especially for outdoor use where runoff can reach gardens or waterways. Keep pets and children away from areas treated with chemical agents until they have been rinsed thoroughly.
Step-by-Step Guide: What to Put in a Pressure Washer
Follow these steps to properly load and use cleaning fluids in your pressure washer:
- Prepare your workspace. Clear the area of obstacles, protect nearby plants with plastic sheeting, and ensure proper drainage so chemical runoff does not pool in unwanted areas.
- Read the manufacturer’s instructions. Check your machine’s manual for approved detergent types, dilution ratios, and any warnings about specific chemicals. This step alone can prevent costly damage.
- Select the appropriate detergent. Based on your surface and contaminant type, choose the correct cleaning agent from the categories discussed above. When in doubt, a general-purpose pressure washer detergent is a safe starting point.
- Dilute the detergent if required. Some products require pre-dilution before being added to the detergent tank. Follow the manufacturer’s dilution ratio exactly. Using concentrate without dilution can clog the siphon tube and damage internal components.
- Fill the detergent tank. Locate the detergent reservoir, which is usually a separate compartment near the pump or attached to the side of the machine. Pour the diluted detergent into the tank, leaving room for expansion and air circulation.
- Connect the detergent siphon. If your machine uses an external siphon tube rather than a built-in tank, attach the tube to the detergent bottle and ensure there are no air leaks. A loose connection will draw air instead of liquid, reducing cleaning effectiveness.
- Switch to the detergent nozzle. Many pressure washers have a dedicated detergent nozzle or a soap fan tip. Switch to this before engaging the chemical dispensing system. Using a high-pressure nozzle while pumping detergent can damage surfaces and create dangerous backflow.
- Test on a small area first. Before committing to a full cleaning session, spray a small, inconspicuous section to verify that the detergent and pressure combination are safe for the surface.
- Apply the detergent evenly. Work in sections, spraying from top to bottom on vertical surfaces to prevent streaking. Allow the detergent to dwell for the recommended contact time, usually between one and five minutes, so the chemicals can break down grime effectively.
- Rinse thoroughly. Switch back to the high-pressure water nozzle and rinse all detergent residue from the surface. Pay special attention to joints, crevices, and porous areas where residue can accumulate. Proper rinsing protects the surface and prevents chemical damage over time.

Tips and Best Practices
Getting the most from your pressure washer involves more than just picking the right soap. These practical tips help you achieve better results while protecting your equipment and the environment.
- Always pre-rinse before applying detergent. Removing loose dirt and debris with plain water first allows the detergent to contact the surface directly, improving its effectiveness significantly.
- Respect dwell times. Detergents need time to work. Applying a cleaner and immediately blasting it away wastes product and reduces cleaning power. Allow the recommended dwell time before rinsing.
- Use the lowest effective pressure. Higher pressure does not always mean better cleaning. Using excessive pressure on delicate surfaces causes pitting, etching, and water intrusion behind siding or into wood grain.
- Keep the nozzle moving. Holding a focused stream in one spot, even at lower pressures, can damage surfaces. Keep the spray tip at least a foot away and in constant motion.
- Rinse detergent off plants and landscaping. If overspray reaches vegetation, rinse it immediately with plain water to prevent chemical burn.
- Store chemicals properly. Keep all detergents and additives in their original containers, stored in a cool, dry location away from children and pets.
- Flush the system after use. After finishing a cleaning session with detergent, run clean water through the system for several minutes to flush residual chemicals from the pump and hoses.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Even experienced users make avoidable errors when selecting and using fluids in their pressure washers. Being aware of these mistakes helps you prevent damage and achieve better outcomes. (See Also:What Oil In Pressure Washer Pump)
One of the most frequent mistakes is using regular household soap or dishwashing liquid. These products create excessive foam under pressure, which can overwhelm the pump, reduce cleaning efficiency, and potentially cause mechanical failure. Always use detergent specifically formulated for pressure washers.
Another common error is ignoring dilution instructions. Pouring concentrated detergent directly into the tank without diluting it first can clog the siphon mechanism and deliver an ineffective or damaging amount of chemical to the surface. Measure carefully every time.
Many users also forget to switch from the detergent nozzle back to a high-pressure rinse nozzle before using plain water. This results in weak water flow and poor rinsing performance. Make switching nozzle tips a habit at the start and end of every job.
Applying acidic cleaners to mortar or natural stone is another damaging mistake. The acid eats away at calcium-based binders in these materials, causing irreversible surface degradation. When in doubt, test on a small hidden area and wait to observe any adverse reaction before proceeding.
Finally, skipping the protective rinse step leaves chemical residue that can discolor surfaces, attract dirt faster, and degrade materials over time. Always rinse thoroughly after any chemical cleaning session.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I Use Dish Soap in a Pressure Washer?
You should avoid using standard dish soap in a pressure washer. Dish soap is not formulated for high-pressure systems and creates excessive foam that can damage the pump and clog filters. Instead, use a detergent specifically designed for pressure washers, which produces controlled foam and disperses evenly under pressure.
Do All Pressure Washers Have a Soap Tank?
No, not all pressure washers come with a built-in detergent tank. Many entry-level and residential models require an external siphon kit or a separate soap bottle attachment. You can purchase aftermarket siphon kits that attach to the high-pressure hose and draw detergent from a bucket or bottle.
Can I Use Vinegar in a Pressure Washer?
Vinegar is sometimes used as a natural cleaning agent, and it can work for light mineral deposits and hard water stains. However, vinegar is acidic and can corrode metal components, damage rubber seals, and harm certain surfaces if used at full concentration. If you choose to use vinegar, dilute it significantly and flush the system thoroughly afterward. Never mix vinegar with bleach or other chemicals, as this creates toxic fumes.
How Often Should I Clean My Pressure Washer?
You should flush your pressure washer with clean water after every use, especially when detergent or chemicals have been used. A deeper cleaning of the pump, filters, and hoses should be performed at least once per season or after every ten to fifteen hours of use. Regular maintenance prevents buildup that reduces performance and extends the lifespan of the machine. (See Also:What Pressure Washer To Buy)
Is Bleach Safe to Use in a Pressure Washer?
Bleach can be used in specific situations, such as removing mold, mildew, or stubborn organic stains, but it must be diluted carefully and used with caution. Bleach damages metal components, corrodes stainless steel, and degrades rubber seals over time. Always rinse the machine thoroughly after using bleach and never mix it with other cleaning agents. Some manufacturers explicitly warn against bleach use, so check your manual before proceeding.
What Is the Difference Between Soap and Detergent for a Pressure Washer?
In practical terms, pressure washer soap and detergent are often used interchangeably in product marketing. Chemically, detergents are synthetic surfactant-based cleaners that work effectively in hard water and under high pressure. Soaps are typically derived from natural fats and oils and tend to produce more foam and can leave residue. For pressure washer use, detergents are generally preferred because of their lower foam production and more consistent performance.
Can I Use Automotive Soap in a Pressure Washer?
Yes, automotive-specific pressure washer soaps are designed for use in pressure washers and are safe for vehicle paint, clear coats, and trim. These soaps are pH-balanced and produce low foam. However, do not use regular automotive hand-applied soap or wash products, as these are not formulated for pressurized delivery and will foam excessively.
