Why Trimmer String Size Matters for Craftsman Weed Eaters

Trimmer string is the cutting component of your Craftsman weed eater, so its size directly determines how well the tool performs. Using a string that is too thick for your model will place excess strain on the motor, leading to overheating, reduced power, increased fuel consumption for gas-powered models, and even permanent damage to the engine or auto-feed mechanism over time. A string that is too thin will break frequently when cutting thick weeds, leading to constant reloading, wasted time, and uneven cutting results. String length is equally important: too long, and the line will tangle inside the trimmer head, jam the auto-feed system, and create uneven cutting patterns, while also increasing drag on the motor. Too short, and you’ll spend more time reloading than trimming, and the string may wear out faster due to increased friction against the head’s interior.

Craftsman engineers its weed eaters with specific string specifications to balance cutting power, efficiency, and tool lifespan. Following these guidelines ensures your trimmer operates as intended, delivers clean, consistent cuts, and avoids costly repairs. When users ask What Size String for Craftsman Weed Eater? they are often addressing performance issues that can be completely resolved by selecting the correct line for their specific model and use case. For example, a user with a 20V cordless Craftsman trimmer who uses .095″ string will experience frequent jams and reduced battery life, while switching to the correct .065″ string will restore full performance and extend runtime.

Understanding Trimmer String Diameter: What the Numbers Mean

Trimmer string diameter is measured in thousandths of an inch, with common sizes ranging from .065″ (1.65 mm) for light-duty use to .105″ (2.67 mm) for heavy-duty commercial applications. The larger the diameter number, the thicker and more durable the string. Thicker string has more mass, which allows it to cut through thicker, tougher vegetation without breaking, but it also requires more power from the trimmer motor to spin at high speeds.

Most Craftsman weed eaters have a maximum recommended string diameter listed in the owner’s manual, which is determined by the power of the motor and the capacity of the trimmer head’s spool. Using a string thicker than this maximum can cause the head to jam, the motor to overwork, and the auto-feed mechanism to break. For example, a 20V cordless Craftsman trimmer designed for light edging will have a max diameter of .065″, while a 40cc gas-powered model built for thick brush can accommodate .095″ or .105″ string.

It’s also important to note that diameter impacts cutting width: thicker string creates a wider cutting path, which can reduce the time it takes to trim large areas, but may sacrifice precision for edging tasks where you need to cut close to sidewalks or garden beds without damaging surrounding plants. OEM Craftsman string is manufactured to exact diameter specifications, while some low-quality aftermarket string may have inconsistent thickness, which can cause jams even if it is labeled with the correct diameter. Always purchase string from reputable brands to ensure consistent quality. When determining What Size String for Craftsman Weed Eater? your first step is always to check your model’s maximum recommended diameter, then select a size that matches your typical use case.

Standard Craftsman Weed Eater String Diameters by Use Case

While every Craftsman model has specific limits, most users fall into one of four common use cases that align with standard string diameters. The table below outlines recommended diameters for each scenario, along with the Craftsman model types they are best suited for:

If you use your Craftsman weed eater for multiple purposes, you may want to keep two spools on hand: one with thinner .065″ string for precision edging, and one with thicker .080″ or .095″ string for heavy cutting tasks. Just be sure not to exceed your model’s maximum recommended diameter, even if you have a spool of thicker string available.

How to Find the Correct String Length for Your Craftsman Model

While string diameter is the most critical specification, using the correct length is equally important for smooth operation. Most Craftsman weed eaters require between 10 and 15 feet of trimmer string per spool, but the exact length varies based on the size of the trimmer head and whether you use single or dual-line configuration.

The easiest way to find the correct length for your model is to consult the owner’s manual, which will list the exact string length requirement for your specific trimmer. If you no longer have the manual, you can look up your model number (printed on a label on the lower shaft or bottom of the trimmer head) on the official Craftsman website, which has digital manuals and parts specifications for all current and legacy models. If you are replacing a worn spool, you can also measure the length of the remaining old string as a reference, though this is only accurate if the previous owner used the correct size. For auto-feed trimmers, using the exact specified length is critical: too much string will cause the feed mechanism to jam, while too little will prevent the line from advancing automatically during use. Inconsistent string length can also cause uneven cutting and increased wear on the trimmer head’s internal components over time.

Step-by-Step: Measuring and Cutting Replacement Trimmer String

Once you know the correct diameter and length for your Craftsman weed eater, cutting and installing new string is a simple process. Follow these steps to ensure proper installation and avoid jams:

1. Disconnect power to the trimmer: For electric models, unplug the unit from the outlet. For cordless models, remove the battery pack. For gas-powered models, turn off the engine and let it cool completely before handling the trimmer head to avoid burns.
2. Remove the trimmer head cover: Consult your owner’s manual for the specific method for your model—most covers twist off or are held in place with a small bolt that can be removed with a screwdriver.
3. Remove the old spool and any remaining string: Pull the spool out of the head, and remove any leftover broken string from the spool and the head’s interior to avoid jams.
4. Measure the correct string length: Cut a piece of new trimmer string to the exact length specified for your model (usually 10-15 feet). For dual-line trimmers, cut two equal lengths of string.
5. Cut the string cleanly: Use a sharp utility knife or heavy-duty scissors to cut the string, as a clean cut prevents fraying, which can cause jams and premature breakage.
6. Thread the string through the spool eyelets: Insert one end of the string through the eyelet on the spool, leaving 4-6 inches of string sticking out of the opposite side. For dual-line spools, repeat this with the second piece of string, making sure the two ends are aligned.
7. Wind the string onto the spool: Wind the string tightly onto the spool in the direction indicated on the spool itself (almost always clockwise for Craftsman models). Leave the 4-6 inch excess ends sticking out of the eyelets—this prevents the string from slipping off the spool during installation and ensures proper auto-feed function.
8. Reassemble the trimmer head: Place the spool back into the head, align the eyelets with the feed slots, and reattach the cover. Pull the excess string ends to release them from the eyelets, and test the auto-feed by pulling the string manually— it should advance smoothly without resistance.

Craftsman Weed Eater String Compatibility by Model Series

Craftsman produces a wide range of weed eaters, from affordable corded electric models for small yards to heavy-duty gas-powered trimmers for commercial use. String requirements vary significantly across these series, so it’s important to match your string to your specific model. Below are general guidelines for the most popular Craftsman weed eater series:

Gas-Powered Craftsman Models

Gas-powered Craftsman trimmers have larger, more powerful motors that can handle thicker, more durable string. The 25cc residential gas series typically uses .080″ diameter string, 10-12 feet in length, ideal for medium-duty lawn trimming. The 30cc and 40cc commercial-grade gas series use .095″ or .105″ diameter string, 12-15 feet in length, designed to cut through thick brush, woody stems, and dense vegetation without breaking. For gas models, using the correct string size also helps maintain optimal fuel efficiency, as an overworked motor will consume more gas during operation.

Electric/Cordless Craftsman Models

Corded electric and lithium-ion cordless Craftsman trimmers have lower-power motors that are not designed to handle thick string. The 12V and 20V cordless series, as well as most corded residential models, use .065″ diameter string, 10 feet in length, perfect for light edging, trimming grass, and cutting small weeds around sidewalks and garden beds. The 40V high-voltage cordless series can accommodate .080″ diameter string, 12 feet in length, for users who need more power for medium-duty tasks without the hassle of gas.

If you own an older, legacy Craftsman weed eater that is no longer in production, you can still find string specifications by searching for the model number on third-party parts websites, or by contacting Craftsman’s customer support team for assistance. Many older models use the same string sizes as current comparable models, so you can often use modern string with vintage trimmers without issue. If you are unsure of your model’s series, check the model number printed on the tool’s label, or look up the parts diagram on the Craftsman website to find the exact string specification for your unit.

Round vs. Square vs. Twisted Trimmer String: Which Is Best for Craftsman?

In addition to diameter and length, the shape of your trimmer string impacts cutting performance and durability. Craftsman weed eaters work with all three common string shapes, each with unique pros and cons for different use cases:

Vibration is an important consideration for long trimming sessions: round and twisted string produce less vibration than square string, which reduces user fatigue and makes the tool more comfortable to use for extended periods. If you have arthritis or other hand/wrist conditions, opt for round or twisted string even for medium-duty tasks to reduce strain. For most residential Craftsman users, round or square string is the best choice, as it balances cost and performance for typical lawn care tasks. Commercial users who need maximum durability will benefit from twisted string, which lasts longer and reduces downtime from broken line.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Choosing Craftsman Trimmer String

Even experienced DIYers make mistakes when selecting and installing trimmer string for their Craftsman weed eater. Avoiding these common errors will save you time, money, and frustration: (See Also:How To Restring A Homelite Gas Weed Eater)

• Using a string diameter thicker than your model’s maximum: This is the most common mistake, and it can cause the trimmer head to jam, the motor to overheat, and the auto-feed mechanism to break. Always check your owner’s manual for the maximum allowed diameter before purchasing new string. Using oversized string can also void your Craftsman warranty if it causes damage to the tool.
• Cutting string to the wrong length: Too much string will tangle inside the head and jam the feed mechanism, while too little will cause the line to run out mid-job and wear out faster. Measure to the exact length specified for your model.
• Winding the string in the wrong direction: Most Craftsman trimmer spools require clockwise winding, but some older models use counter-clockwise. Winding in the wrong direction will prevent the string from feeding automatically, leading to constant jams.
• Using frayed or old string: String that has been stored for years or exposed to sunlight becomes brittle and breaks frequently. Always use fresh, high-quality string to avoid constant reloading and head clogs.
• Skipping the excess length step when winding: Failing to leave 4-6 inches of string sticking out of the spool eyelets before winding will cause the string to slip off the spool during use, leading to immediate jams and breakage.
• Ignoring head type requirements: Another common mistake is assuming that all Craftsman trimmer heads use the same string installation method. Some older models use a single-line head, while newer models use dual-line or auto-feed heads that require specific string lengths and winding directions. Always consult your owner’s manual for the correct installation procedure for your specific head type to avoid jams and feed issues.

Tips for Extending Trimmer String Life on Your Craftsman Weed Eater

Proper maintenance and usage habits can extend the life of your trimmer string by 2-3 times, reducing the frequency of replacements and improving overall performance. Follow these best practices to get the most out of your Craftsman weed eater string:

• Store string in a cool, dry place: Exposure to sunlight, moisture, and extreme temperatures will make string brittle and prone to breaking. Keep unused string in a sealed plastic bag in a garage or shed to preserve its flexibility.
• Avoid cutting rocks, concrete, or tree trunks with the string: These hard surfaces will wear down string in seconds, and can also damage the trimmer head and motor. If you need to cut vegetation near hard surfaces, use a lower throttle setting to reduce wear.
• Replace string at the first sign of fraying: Don’t wait for the string to break mid-job, as frayed string is more likely to jam the head and cause motor strain. Replace it as soon as you notice uneven wear or frayed edges.
• Use the correct string shape for your use case: Using round string for thick brush will cause it to break almost immediately, while using square string for light edging will cause unnecessary vibration and wear on the head. Match the string shape to your typical tasks to maximize lifespan.
• Clean the trimmer head regularly: Grass clippings, dirt, and debris can build up inside the head, causing the string to wear down faster and the feed mechanism to jam. Wipe out the head after each use to keep it running smoothly.
• Pre-soak string for gas-powered models in dry climates: For gas-powered Craftsman trimmers, soaking new string in water for 10-15 minutes before installation can reduce friction and prevent the string from drying out and breaking quickly in hot, arid weather. This is especially helpful for users in regions with low humidity, where string can become brittle after just a few uses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a thicker string than recommended on my Craftsman weed eater?

No, you should never use a string thicker than the maximum diameter listed in your owner’s manual. Thicker string will place excess strain on the motor, cause the auto-feed mechanism to jam, and can even break the trimmer head or damage the engine over time. Using oversized string can also void your Craftsman warranty if it causes damage to the tool. If you need to cut thicker vegetation, upgrade to a Craftsman model with a higher maximum string rating instead of using oversized string on a lower-powered model.

What happens if I use string that’s too long for my Craftsman weed eater?

Using string that is longer than the recommended length will cause the line to tangle inside the trimmer head, jam the auto-feed mechanism, and create uneven cutting patterns. Excess string can also wrap around the spool shaft, causing the motor to stall or overheat. In severe cases, excess string can wrap around the trimmer’s driveshaft, causing the motor to seize and requiring expensive repairs. Always cut string to the exact length specified for your model to avoid these issues.

Do all Craftsman weed eaters use the same string size?

No, string size varies widely across Craftsman models based on motor power, head type, and intended use. A small 20V cordless edger will use a much thinner, shorter string than a 40cc gas-powered commercial trimmer. Always check your model’s manual or parts label for the exact string specifications rather than assuming a universal size.

Can I use aftermarket string for my Craftsman weed eater?

Yes, aftermarket trimmer string works perfectly for Craftsman weed eaters as long as it matches the exact diameter, length, and shape specifications for your model. Aftermarket string is often more affordable than OEM Craftsman string, and many high-quality aftermarket options perform just as well, if not better, than factory-made line. Just be sure to purchase from reputable brands to avoid inconsistent diameter or poor-quality materials that break frequently.

How often should I replace the string on my Craftsman weed eater?

Replace your trimmer string as soon as it becomes frayed, worn, or breaks frequently. For light residential use (trimming grass around a small yard), this is typically every 1-2 months. For heavy use (cutting thick weeds, overgrown lots), you may need to replace the string every 1-2 weeks. Regularly inspecting the string before each use will help you catch wear early and avoid mid-job breakage. (See Also:Can You Store Weed Eater Vertical Or Horizontal)

Is square string better than round for Craftsman weed eaters?

Square string is better for cutting thick, tough vegetation like woody stems and dense weeds, as its sharp edges slice through material more efficiently than round string. Round string is better for light edging and trimming delicate plants, as it causes less vibration and wear on the trimmer head. Choose the shape based on your typical use case: round for light tasks, square for heavy cutting.
