Introduction
Knowing what direction to wind weed eater string is essential for anyone who wants a smooth‑running trimmer and a clean cut. The majority of modern line‑trimmer heads are designed to accept line that is wound clockwise when viewed from the top of the spool. This clockwise rule ensures that the centrifugal force generated during operation pulls the line outward, feeding it consistently through the eyelets. If the line is wound in the opposite direction, the spool can bind, the line may retract, or the head can jam, leading to frustration and wasted time. In this guide we will explore the mechanics behind the winding direction, show you how to identify your specific trimmer head, provide a detailed step‑by‑step winding procedure, and share tips, common mistakes, and troubleshooting advice so you can keep your equipment performing at its best.

Understanding the Basics of Weed Eater String
Weed eater string, often called trimmer line, is a monofilament or braided polymer cord that cuts grass and weeds by rotating at high speed. The line is stored on a spool inside the trimmer head and feeds out through one or more eyelets as the head spins. The diameter, shape (round, square, twisted), and material all affect cutting performance and durability. Most residential trimmers use a 0.080‑inch to 0.095‑inch round line, while commercial models may accept heavier gauges up to 0.130‑inch. Regardless of gauge, the line must be wound onto the spool in the correct orientation so that the outward centrifugal force pulls the line forward rather than pushing it back into the spool.
The spool typically has a small arrow or the word “CW” molded into its side, indicating the proper winding direction. If no marking exists, the general rule for the vast majority of heads is to wind the line clockwise when looking down at the spool from above. This orientation aligns with the rotation of the head (which also turns clockwise on most gas‑powered and electric trimmers). Understanding this basic relationship between spool rotation and line feed is the foundation for every other topic in this article.
Why Winding Direction Matters
The direction you wind the line determines how the line behaves under centrifugal force. When the trimmer head spins, the line wants to move outward along the radius of the spool. If the line is wound clockwise, each coil lies in a direction that naturally unwinds as the spool rotates, allowing the line to slide smoothly through the eyelets. Conversely, a counter‑clockwise wind creates a “reverse” coil that resists the outward pull, causing the line to bind, bunch up, or even snap back into the spool. The result is uneven feeding, frequent line breakage, and a trimmer that stalls or vibrates excessively.
In addition to feeding performance, winding direction influences line wear. A correctly wound line distributes tension evenly across each coil, reducing hot spots that can melt or weaken the polymer. An incorrectly wound line concentrates stress at the points where the coil fights the rotation, accelerating wear and leading to premature line replacement. For professionals who run trimmers for hours each day, this difference translates directly into cost savings and less downtime.
The Clockwise Rule Explained
The clockwise rule is simple: when you hold the spool so that the label or arrow faces you, turn the spool so that the line wraps around it in a clockwise spiral. Imagine the hands of a clock moving from 12 to 1 to 2; that is the direction the line should travel as you feed it onto the spool. Most manufacturers stamp a small arrow on the spool body that points in the direction of proper winding. If you see an arrow pointing clockwise, follow it. If the arrow points counter‑clockwise, that particular head is an exception and must be wound accordingly.
Why do most heads follow the clockwise convention? The answer lies in the standard rotation direction of the motor shaft. In the majority of gas‑powered and corded electric trimmers, the output shaft rotates clockwise when viewed from the operator’s perspective (i.e., looking down at the head). The spool is directly coupled to this shaft, so it also spins clockwise. Winding the line clockwise makes the coils “unwind” in harmony with that rotation. A few brands, notably some older European models, use a counter‑clockwise shaft rotation; those heads will have a counter‑clockwise arrow. Always verify the arrow on your specific spool before assuming the universal rule applies.
How to Identify Your Trimmer Head Type
Before you wind new line, you need to know which type of head you have. There are three common categories: fixed‑line heads, bump‑feed heads, and automatic‑feed heads. Fixed‑line heads require you to manually cut and insert pre‑measured lengths of line; they are rare on modern consumer models. Bump‑feed heads (also called “tap‑and‑go”) release line when you tap the head on the ground while the motor is running. Automatic‑feed heads use a spring‑loaded mechanism that advances line based on centrifugal force alone. The winding direction is the same for all three types, but the way you load the line onto the spool differs slightly.
To identify your head, remove the spool cover (usually a twist‑off cap) and look at the spool itself. A bump‑feed head will have a small bump knob on the side of the spool that you press to release line. An automatic‑feed head will have a visible spring or a small plastic pawl inside the spool cavity. Fixed‑line heads have no moving feed mechanism at all. Once you know the type, you can follow the appropriate loading steps while still applying the clockwise winding rule. (See Also:How To Store Weed Eater For Winter)
Step‑by‑Step Guide: Winding String Clockwise
Follow these steps each time you replace the line. The procedure assumes a standard bump‑feed head; adjust the loading step for automatic‑feed heads as noted.
- Power off and disconnect the trimmer. For gas models, remove the spark plug wire; for electric models, unplug the cord or remove the battery.
- Remove the spool cover by twisting it counter‑clockwise (most covers unscrew in the opposite direction of the line winding). Set the cover aside.
- Take out the empty spool and clean any debris from the spool cavity with a brush or compressed air.
- Cut the new line to the length recommended by the manufacturer (typically 10‑15 feet for a single‑line spool, 20‑30 feet for a dual‑line spool). Use a sharp utility knife or scissors for a clean cut.
- Find the winding arrow on the spool. If there is no arrow, assume clockwise winding when viewing the spool from the top.
- Insert one end of the line into the anchor hole or slot on the spool. Pull it through until a short tail (about 2‑3 inches) remains inside the spool.
- Wind the line clockwise by turning the spool with your fingers while guiding the line onto the spool. Keep the coils tight and even, avoiding overlaps or gaps. Continue until the spool is filled to the indicated fill line (usually marked on the spool flange).
- Secure the line end in the retaining notch or clip on the spool. This prevents the line from unraveling during re‑assembly.
- Re‑install the spool into the head cavity, making sure the line tails exit through the eyelets. For bump‑feed heads, pull the tails gently until they click into the feed slots.
- Replace the spool cover and tighten it clockwise until snug. Do not over‑tighten, as this can crack the plastic.
- Reconnect power and test the trimmer. Tap the head on the ground (bump‑feed) or run the motor briefly (automatic‑feed) to verify smooth line advance.
If you have an automatic‑feed head, skip step 9 (the bump knob) and simply ensure the line tails are seated in the feed slots; the internal spring will advance the line when the head spins.
Common Variations: Dual‑Line vs Single‑Line Heads
Single‑line heads use one continuous strand of line that feeds from a single eyelet. They are simpler to load because you only wind one strand onto the spool. Dual‑line heads have two separate eyelets and require two equal lengths of line wound side‑by‑side on the same spool. The winding direction for each strand is still clockwise, but you must keep the two strands separated to prevent them from crossing and binding. Some dual‑line spools have a divider ridge that naturally separates the two channels; if yours lacks a divider, wind the first strand, then start the second strand in the opposite channel, maintaining the same clockwise orientation for both.
Another variation is the “pre‑wound” spool cartridge, which eliminates manual winding altogether. These cartridges are inserted as a unit and are factory‑wound in the correct direction. While convenient, they are more expensive per foot of line and may not be available for all trimmer models. If you use cartridges, you still need to verify that the cartridge’s rotation arrow matches your head’s rotation; mismatched cartridges can cause the same feeding problems as hand‑wound line.
Tips and Best Practices for Long‑Lasting String
- Use the correct gauge for your trimmer. Over‑gauged line strains the motor and can cause the head to overheat; under‑gauged line breaks prematurely.
- Store line in a cool, dry place. UV exposure and moisture degrade the polymer, making it brittle.
- Trim the line ends at a 45° angle before inserting them into the anchor hole. This reduces the chance of the line catching on the spool edge.
- Wind tightly but not excessively. Over‑tight coils can deform the spool and create friction; loose coils lead to uneven feeding.
- Replace the entire spool if the plastic shows cracks or warping. A damaged spool will never feed correctly, no matter how well you wind.
- Lubricate the spool shaft lightly with a silicone spray once per season to reduce friction between the spool and the head housing.
- Match line shape to the job. Twisted or serrated line cuts thicker weeds more cleanly but wears faster; round line lasts longer for general lawn edging.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
- Winding counter‑clockwise – The single most frequent error. Always double‑check the arrow on the spool before you start winding.
- Over‑filling the spool – Exceeding the fill line forces the line into the eyelets, causing jams. Stop winding when the line reaches the marked maximum.
- Using mismatched line lengths on dual‑line heads – Unequal lengths cause one side to run out first, unbalancing the head and creating vibration.
- Neglecting to secure the line tail – An unsecured tail can unwind inside the head, leading to a tangled mess.
- Forcing the spool cover on – Cross‑threading or over‑tightening cracks the cover, allowing debris to enter the spool cavity.
- Ignoring the manufacturer’s line‑type recommendation – Some heads are designed only for round line; using square or twisted line can damage the feed mechanism.
Troubleshooting: String Feeds Poorly or Breaks
If the line does not advance when you bump the head, first verify that the spool rotates freely. Remove the spool and spin it by hand; it should turn without resistance. Next, check that the line tails are correctly seated in the feed slots and that the bump knob (if present) moves up and down smoothly. A stuck bump knob often indicates dirt or a broken spring; clean the mechanism and replace the spring if necessary.
Frequent line breakage usually points to one of three causes: the line gauge is too thin for the workload, the line is old and brittle, or the cutting head is striking hard objects (rocks, curbs, metal edging). Upgrade to a heavier gauge or a more abrasion‑resistant line profile, and avoid forcing the trimmer into immovable obstacles. If the line snaps at the eyelet, inspect the eyelet for sharp edges; a small file can smooth a burred eyelet and extend line life.
Excessive vibration or a “wobbling” head often means the spool is not seated evenly. Remove the spool, clean the mating surfaces, and reinstall, ensuring the spool sits flat against the head housing. Also verify that the spool cover is tightened evenly; an uneven cover can tilt the spool.
Maintenance and Storage Advice
Regular maintenance keeps the winding direction effective over the life of the tool. After each use, wipe the head and spool area with a dry cloth to remove grass sap and dust. Once per month, disassemble the head, inspect the spool for cracks, and apply a light coat of silicone lubricant to the spool shaft. At the end of the season, remove all line from the spool, clean the spool thoroughly, and store the trimmer in a dry, temperature‑controlled environment. If you store the trimmer with line on the spool, the line can develop a permanent set that makes future winding difficult and feeding erratic. (See Also:How To Clean Echo Weed Eater Carb)
For gas‑powered models, add a fuel stabilizer before long‑term storage and run the engine until the carburetor is dry. For battery‑operated units, store the battery at about 50 % charge in a cool place. These steps protect the motor and the head assembly, ensuring that when you next need to wind new line, the head will accept it cleanly and the clockwise rule will work as intended.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which way do I wind the string on a weed eater?
Wind the string clockwise when looking down at the spool from above. Most spools have an arrow indicating this direction; if there is no arrow, assume clockwise.
What happens if I wind the string counter‑clockwise?
The line will fight the centrifugal force of the spinning head, causing poor feed, frequent jams, and rapid line breakage.
Can I use any line gauge in my trimmer?
No. Use the gauge range specified in the owner’s manual. Using a line that is too thick can overload the motor; too thin will snap easily.
How often should I replace the spool itself?
Replace the spool if you see cracks, warping, or if the feed mechanism no longer operates smoothly even after cleaning. A damaged spool cannot be fixed by rewinding. (See Also:How To Get Cap Off Weed Eater)
Do pre‑wound cartridges follow the same clockwise rule?
Yes. Factory‑wound cartridges are wound clockwise for standard heads. Always verify the cartridge’s rotation arrow matches your head’s rotation before installing.
