Why Winterizing Your Toro Sprinkler System Matters

Water expands by approximately 9% when it freezes. Inside the confined space of irrigation pipes, this expansion creates enormous pressure that metal, PVC, and fittings cannot withstand. Even a small amount of remaining water in a low point or valve body can cause a catastrophic failure. Winterizing your Toro sprinkler system removes or displaces this water before temperatures drop below freezing.

Beyond preventing pipe bursts, proper winterization protects sprinkler heads, risers, valves, and the controller. A single burst pipe can flood your lawn, damage landscaping, and waste water. Repairing frozen damage is far more costly and time-consuming than a single winterization session. By investing a few hours each fall, you extend the lifespan of your entire irrigation system and ensure reliable performance every growing season.

When to Winterize Your Toro Sprinkler System

Timing is critical. You should winterize your Toro sprinkler system before outdoor temperatures consistently drop below 32°F (0°C). In most northern and midwestern regions, this means completing the process by late October or early November. In southern climates where frost is occasional, you may have until mid-November, but never wait until the first hard freeze is forecast.

A good rule of thumb is to watch your local weather forecasts closely and plan to winterize when daytime highs are consistently in the 40s°F or lower. This gives you a comfortable buffer before any overnight freezing occurs. Remember that even a single night below freezing can cause damage if water remains in the system.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Having the right equipment on hand makes the winterization process smoother and more effective. Here is what you will need:

• Garden hose — for manual draining and flushing
• Adjustable wrench or pliers — for opening drain valves and removing caps
• Compressor or air compressor rental — for blowing out residual water (most homeowners use a rental or hire a professional)
• Air compressor regulator — to control pressure and prevent damage to fittings
• Spray nozzle — for connecting to the compressor air line
• Insulation foam or pipe wrap — for protecting exposed backflow preventers and valves
• Rubber gloves — for handling dirt and cold components
• Towels or rags — for cleaning up water during manual draining
• Owner’s manual — for model-specific guidance from Toro

Step-by-Step Guide to Winterizing a Toro Sprinkler System

Follow these steps carefully to fully winterize your Toro sprinkler system. Each step builds on the previous one, so complete them in order for the best results.

Step 1: Shut Off the Water Supply

Locate the main shutoff valve for your irrigation system. This is typically found near the water meter, in a basement, or in an underground box close to the property line. Turn the valve fully clockwise to stop water flow to the entire system. Once shut off, turn on a nearby outdoor faucet to relieve pressure in the lines. Leave the faucet running throughout the draining process.

It is also wise to turn off the automatic controller so the system cannot accidentally activate during the winterization process. This prevents water from being reintroduced into the lines while you are working.

Step 2: Drain the System Manually

After shutting off the water, open all drainage points in the system. Toro systems typically have manual drain valves near the main line, at low points, and near each valve box. Open every drain valve you can find and allow gravity to push the remaining water out. Use a garden hose to flush each zone by briefly turning the system on and off if possible, directing water toward a drainage area.

Pay special attention to low points in your yard where water tends to collect. These areas are the most vulnerable to freeze damage. If you have a Toro system with a PRV (Pressure Reducing Valve), check whether it has a built-in drain and open it as well. Allow the system to drain completely before moving to the next step.

Step 3: Blow Out Lines with Compressed Air

Manual draining removes the bulk of the water, but thin film moisture will remain inside pipes, fittings, and sprinkler heads. This is where compressed air becomes essential. Renting a quality air compressor or hiring a professional with proper equipment is strongly recommended. (See Also:What Is The Best Oscillating Sprinkler)

Connect the air compressor to the system using a regulator set to no more than 50 PSI for residential systems. Excessive pressure can damage fittings, crack PVC pipes, and pop sprinkler heads. Follow this sub-process:

1. Attach the air line to the blowout valve or the hose bib farthest from the main shutoff.
2. Set the regulator to 20–30 PSI for delicate drip systems and 40–50 PSI for standard spray systems.
3. Open the main valve briefly to push air through the system, starting with the zone farthest from the compressor.
4. Work zone by zone, opening each solenoid valve to allow air to pass through the sprinkler heads.
5. Listen for water sputtering. When only air comes out, move to the next zone.
6. After completing all zones, disconnect the air line and cap or close all access points.

This process forces residual water out through every sprinkler head and lateral line, leaving the system nearly bone dry. If you are unsure about using compressed air safely, consider hiring a licensed irrigation professional who specializes in Toro systems.

Step 4: Winterize the Controller

The Toro controller (or timer) deserves attention too. After turning it off, remove the battery to prevent corrosion and electrical drain over the winter months. If your controller has a seasonal hold or rain delay feature, activate it to prevent automatic watering cycles. Store the controller manual in a dry place for reference during spring reactivation.

Some Toro controllers have a drain plug or internal moisture sensor. Consult your specific model’s owner’s manual to determine if additional draining is recommended. Keeping the controller dry and free of standing moisture prevents internal corrosion and electrical faults when you restart the system in spring.

Step 5: Insulate Exposed Components

Even after draining and blowing out the system, exposed components above ground remain vulnerable. The backflow preventer, valves, and any above-ground piping should be wrapped with insulation foam or pipe wrap. Use waterproof outdoor insulation covers for the backflow preventer, as this component is especially critical and often the first to freeze.

If you have a Toro system with above-ground valve boxes, make sure the lids are secure and consider adding foam insulation inside. Risers and sprinkler heads in exposed areas can also benefit from temporary covers during the coldest weeks. Taking these extra precautions ensures that even unexpected cold snaps do not cause damage.

Winterizing Different Toro Sprinkler Models

Toro manufactures a wide range of sprinkler systems, from simple residential setups to advanced commercial controllers. While the core winterization principles remain the same, some models have unique features requiring special attention.

For Toro Eco-Touch systems, pay extra attention to the drip irrigation components. Drip lines hold water in very small volumes and can freeze quickly. Use lower air pressure (20–25 PSI) when blowing out drip zones to avoid damaging emitters and tubing. Flush each drip zone individually with both water and air.

For Toro Lynx and Toro Infiniti controllers, the digital interface may store seasonal settings. Before removing batteries, note your current programming so you can quickly restore it in spring. These controllers also often have advanced diagnostic features that can help you confirm all zones have been properly drained.

For systems with Toro Quick-Click fittings, inspect all connections before winter. These push-fit fittings can loosen over time, and any loose connection may allow water to seep in and freeze. Tighten or replace any questionable fittings as part of your winterization routine.

DIY vs Professional Winterization

Deciding whether to winterize your Toro sprinkler system yourself or hire a professional depends on your experience, equipment, and budget. Here is a comparison to help you decide:

Both options are effective when done correctly. If you choose DIY, invest time in understanding your specific Toro system layout and follow each step meticulously. If you choose a professional, schedule the service early in the fall before companies become busy with holiday and cold-weather demand. (See Also:How Many Sprinkler Valves Per Box)

Tips and Best Practices

Keep these recommendations in mind to get the best results from your winterization efforts:

• Never rely solely on manual draining. Gravity alone cannot remove all moisture from every pipe and fitting. Compressed air is essential for a thorough job.
• Label all valves and zones. If you are working with a complex Toro system, label each valve box and zone clearly so you do not miss any during the process.
• Test the system after winterizing. Run a brief air-only test through each zone to confirm all water has been expelled. Listen for any remaining sputtering or water sounds.
• Document your process. Take notes or photos of how you winterized the system. This reference will be invaluable during spring reactivation.
• Check your backflow preventer annually. This component is critical for water safety and is frequently overlooked during routine maintenance.
• Schedule winterization early. Do not wait for cold weather to arrive. Early fall gives you time to address any unexpected issues before temperatures drop.
• Keep the area around valve boxes clear. Remove debris, mulch, and vegetation from around exposed components so insulation covers fit properly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced homeowners can make errors when winterizing their Toro sprinkler system. Avoid these common pitfalls:

• Using too much air pressure. Setting the compressor above 50 PSI can blow out sprinkler heads, crack fittings, and damage valves. Always use a regulator and start at the lowest effective pressure.
• Skipping zones. It is easy to overlook a remote zone or a drip line. Work through every single zone methodically and verify each one has been blown out.
• Forgetting to turn off the controller. An active controller can trigger a watering cycle, introducing fresh water into a system you have just dried out. Always disable automatic programming before winterizing.
• Neglecting the backflow preventer. This above-ground component is one of the most freeze-vulnerable parts of the system. Insulate it properly and drain any built-in test cocks.
• Leaving hoses attached. Remove any hoses connected to the irrigation system before winter. Hoses trap water and can freeze, blocking drainage and causing pressure buildup.
• Waiting too long. Procrastination is the most common mistake. Once a hard freeze hits, it may be too late to safely drain the system. Act early and complete winterization well before temperatures drop consistently below freezing.

Signs Your System Was Not Properly Winterized

Sometimes winterization is incomplete or ineffective. Watch for these warning signs that your Toro sprinkler system may have suffered freeze damage:

• Sprinkler heads that do not pop up or spray unevenly in spring
• Visible cracks or breaks in PVC pipes or risers
• Water pooling around valve boxes or near the main line
• Unusual sounds (hissing or dripping) when the system is turned on
• Controller error codes or failure to start
• Spitzer heads that are bent, broken, or missing entirely
• Areas of the lawn that stay dry while other zones water normally

If you notice any of these signs, inspect the affected area immediately. Small cracks can be repaired with PVC cement and replacement fittings, but left unaddressed, they can worsen and lead to larger failures. In severe cases, you may need to replace entire valve bodies or sections of pipe.

Spring Reactivation Tips

Winterization is only half the process. Properly reactivating your Toro sprinkler system in spring is equally important to prevent water hammer, electrical issues, and uneven watering.

1. Remove all insulation covers and winterization caps.
2. Turn the main water supply back on slowly to allow pipes to fill gradually.
3. Check each valve box for signs of leaks or water accumulation.
4. Reinstall the battery in the controller and restore your seasonal programming.
5. Run each zone manually, starting with the one closest to the main line, and check for proper spray patterns and pressure.
6. Inspect all sprinkler heads for damage and replace any that are cracked or malfunctioning.
7. Adjust sprinkler heads to ensure proper coverage and avoid watering hardscape areas.
8. Confirm the backflow preventer is functioning correctly by checking for proper pressure readings.

Taking your time with spring reactivation prevents shock to the system and helps you catch any winter damage before it becomes a bigger problem.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I Skip Winterizing My Toro Sprinkler System If I Live in a Warm Climate?

Even in warmer climates, occasional freezing temperatures can occur. If your area experiences any nights below 32°F, it is worth winterizing your Toro sprinkler system. Light freezes can still cause damage, especially in above-ground components. If you live in a truly frost-free zone, you may be able to skip winterization, but annual inspection of the system is still recommended.

How Often Should I Winterize My Toro Sprinkler System?

You should winterize your Toro sprinkler system every year before the first expected freeze. Winterization is not a one-time task. Each year, new vulnerabilities can develop due to settling, wear, or changes in landscaping. Annual winterization ensures consistent protection and helps you catch small issues before they become expensive repairs. (See Also:How To Repair A Nelson Tractor Sprinkler)

What Air Pressure Should I Use to Blow Out a Toro Sprinkler System?

For most residential Toro sprinkler systems, use between 20 and 50 PSI depending on the components. Drip systems and systems with delicate fittings should use the lower end (20–25 PSI). Standard spray heads and rotor systems can handle 40–50 PSI. Always use a pressure regulator and never exceed 80 PSI under any circumstances, as this can cause serious damage to the system.

How Much Does Professional Winterization Cost for a Toro Sprinkler System?

Professional winterization typically costs between $100 and $250, depending on the size and complexity of your system. Larger commercial systems or those with multiple zones, drip lines, and special features will be on the higher end. Many homeowners find that the cost is reasonable given the protection it provides against freeze damage.

Can I Use a Leaf Blower Instead of an Air Compressor?

A standard leaf blower does not generate nearly enough pressure or volume to effectively blow water out of irrigation lines. While it may push out some surface moisture, it will not remove the residual water trapped inside pipes and fittings. A proper air compressor with a minimum of 5 cubic feet per minute (CFM) is recommended for thorough winterization.
