Understanding Your Dewalt Weed Eater

Before you begin winding, it is important to know which Dewalt string trimmer you own. Dewalt offers several lines, including the 20V MAX, 60V MAX, and FlexVolt series. Each model may have a slightly different spool design, line diameter requirement, and loading mechanism. Consult your owner’s manual for the exact specifications, but most Dewalt trimmers use a dual-line bump-feed head that accepts 0.080-inch or 0.095-inch diameter line.

Types of Dewalt Trimmers

Dewalt’s lineup generally falls into three categories:

• 20V MAX Brushless: Lightweight, ideal for small to medium yards. Uses a 13-inch cutting swath and typically takes 0.080-inch line.
• 60V MAX Brushless: More power for thicker grass and weeds. Often features a 15-inch swath and can handle 0.095-inch line.
• FlexVolt 60V/120V: Professional-grade runtime and power. Compatible with both 60V and 120V batteries, usually equipped with a 15- to 16-inch cutting head and 0.095-inch line.

Identifying your model ensures you purchase the correct replacement line and follow the appropriate winding procedure.

Spool and Line Basics

The spool is the cylindrical component that holds the trimmer line. Most Dewalt spools have two separate chambers for dual-line operation. Each chamber has an anchor hole or notch where the line end is secured before winding. The line must be wound tightly and evenly in the direction indicated by arrows on the spool (usually counterclockwise when viewed from the bottom). Using the correct line diameter prevents jams and ensures the bump-feed mechanism advances line reliably.

Safety Precautions Before Winding

Safety should always come first when servicing any power tool. Follow these precautions before you start winding your Dewalt weed eater:

• Remove the battery pack or disconnect the power source to prevent accidental startup.
• Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from stray line ends or debris.
• Use gloves to avoid cuts from sharp line edges.
• Work on a clean, stable surface with good lighting.
• Keep the trimmer head away from children and pets during the process.

Taking a few seconds to prepare safely eliminates the risk of injury and ensures you can focus on the task.

Tools and Materials Needed

Gather the following items before you begin:

• Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter for your model, typically 0.080″ or 0.095″).
• Scissors or a utility knife for cutting line.
• Clean rag to wipe the spool and housing.
• Owner’s manual for reference (optional but helpful).

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Wind Dewalt Weed Eater

Follow these steps carefully to wind your Dewalt trimmer spool correctly. The process is similar across most models, but always defer to your manual for model-specific details.

Removing the Spool

1. Turn the trimmer upside down so the cutting head faces up.
2. Press the two release tabs on the sides of the spool retainer (or turn the retaining knob counterclockwise, depending on model).
3. Lift the spool out of the housing. Note the orientation of the spool and any springs or washers that may come loose.
4. Remove any old line remnants from the spool chambers. Clean the spool and housing with a rag.

Preparing the Line

1. Cut a single length of line approximately 20 to 25 feet long. Using one continuous piece reduces the chance of uneven winding.
2. Find the midpoint of the line by folding it in half. This midpoint will sit at the center divider between the two chambers.
3. Insert the midpoint into the anchor notch or hole at the center of the spool. Ensure it is seated securely.

Winding Technique

1. Hold the spool firmly in one hand. With the other hand, begin winding the line onto the upper chamber following the directional arrow (usually counterclockwise). Keep tension on the line so each coil sits snugly against the previous one without overlapping.
2. Continue winding until you have about 6 inches of line remaining. Secure the loose end in the temporary holding notch on the spool flange.
3. Repeat the winding process for the lower chamber using the other half of the line, again following the arrow direction.
4. Leave about 6 inches of line on the second end and secure it in the opposite holding notch.

Reassembling

1. Place the spool back into the housing, aligning the notches with the eyelets on the housing.
2. Feed the two line ends through the eyelets. Pull gently to release them from the holding notches.
3. Snap the retainer cover back onto the housing (or tighten the retaining knob clockwise). Ensure it clicks securely.
4. Reattach the battery pack. Tap the trimmer head on the ground briefly to test line feed. The line should advance smoothly.

Proper Winding Technique Tips

Mastering the winding technique makes a noticeable difference in performance. Keep these tips in mind:

• Maintain consistent tension: Loose coils lead to crossing and jams. Pull the line tight as you wind.
• Wind in the correct direction: Always follow the arrow on the spool. Winding backwards causes the line to feed improperly.
• Avoid overfilling: Leave a small gap (about 1/8 inch) between the wound line and the outer flange. Overfilling prevents the spool from spinning freely.
• Use quality line: Dewalt-branded or high-quality commercial line resists welding and breaking better than bargain brands.
• Cut line at an angle: A pointed tip threads through eyelets easier than a blunt cut.

Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

Even experienced users can make errors when winding a trimmer spool. Here are the most frequent mistakes and how to prevent them:

• Winding the wrong direction: This is the number one cause of feeding problems. Always double-check the arrow before you start.
• Crossing lines between chambers: Keep each half of the line strictly in its own chamber. Crossing creates friction and prevents the bump feed from working.
• Using the wrong line diameter: Too thick a line jams the head; too thin wears out quickly. Match the diameter to your model’s specification.
• Leaving too much slack: Slack coils unravel during operation, causing tangles. Keep tension firm throughout winding.
• Forgetting to secure the ends in holding notches: Unsecured ends can slip into the wrong chamber or unwind during reassembly.
• Not cleaning the spool: Dirt and old line fragments interfere with smooth rotation. Wipe the spool clean every time you reload.

Comparison Table: Dewalt Trimmer Line Types

Choose the line type that matches your typical cutting conditions. For most homeowners, standard round line in the correct diameter provides the best balance of cost and performance.

Maintaining Your Trimmer Line for Longevity

Proper maintenance extends the life of both the line and the trimmer head. Consider these practices:

• Store line in a cool, dry place: UV exposure and moisture degrade nylon over time. Keep spare spools indoors.
• Soak line in water before use: Some professionals soak nylon line for 24 hours to increase flexibility and reduce breakage.
• Inspect the spool regularly: Check for cracks, worn eyelets, or damaged retaining tabs. Replace the spool if any part is compromised.
• Clean the head after each use: Grass clippings and dirt accumulate inside the head, causing drag. Blow out debris with compressed air or a brush.
• Replace line before it runs out completely: Running the trimmer with very short line stresses the motor and can damage the bump-feed mechanism.

Troubleshooting Line Feeding Issues

If your Dewalt weed eater fails to feed line properly after winding, run through this checklist:

• Line not advancing when bumped: Ensure the spool rotates freely. Remove the spool and check for debris or a broken spring. Verify the line is wound in the correct direction and not crossed.
• Line feeds too much or too little: Adjust the line length protruding from the eyelets. Ideal length is typically 3–4 inches per side. Too long causes drag; too short prevents the bump feed from engaging.
• Line breaks frequently: Check for sharp edges on the eyelets or spool flanges. File down any burrs. Also confirm you are using the recommended line diameter.
• Spool won’t stay in housing: The retainer tabs may be worn. Replace the spool retainer or the entire head assembly if necessary.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace the trimmer line?

Replace the line whenever it wears down to less than 2 inches per side, becomes brittle, or breaks frequently during normal use. For heavy use, this may be every few hours; for light residential use, a spool can last several sessions. (See Also:Who Makes Weed Eater Riding Mowers)

Can I use any brand of trimmer line in my Dewalt?

Yes, as long as the diameter matches your model’s specification (usually 0.080″ or 0.095″). However, Dewalt-branded or high-quality commercial lines tend to last longer and feed more reliably.

Why does my line keep getting tangled inside the spool?

Tangling is usually caused by winding in the wrong direction, crossing the two line halves, or winding too loosely. Follow the arrow on the spool, keep each half in its own chamber, and maintain firm tension while winding.

Is it better to use pre-wound spools or wind my own?

Pre-wound spools are convenient and guarantee correct winding, but they cost more per foot of line. Winding your own is more economical and allows you to choose line type and length. Both methods work well if done correctly.

What is the purpose of the bump-feed mechanism?

The bump-feed mechanism advances line when you tap the trimmer head on the ground while the motor is running. Centrifugal force pushes the spool outward against a spring, releasing a small amount of line through the eyelets. This allows you to extend line without stopping the tool.

Can I use thicker line for tougher weeds?

Only if your trimmer head is rated for that diameter. Using line thicker than specified can overload the motor, cause feeding issues, and damage the head. For tougher weeds, consider a serrated or square line in the correct diameter instead. (See Also:How To Rebuild A Weed Eater Carburetor)

How do I know which direction to wind the line?

Look for molded arrows on the spool flanges. Most Dewalt spools indicate a counterclockwise direction when viewed from the bottom (the side that faces the ground during operation). If arrows are missing, consult the owner’s manual.
