Understanding Your Hunter Sprinkler System
Key Components
A typical Hunter irrigation setup consists of a main water supply line, a backflow preventer, a master valve (if equipped), a controller, zone valves, and the sprinkler heads themselves. The controller is the brain; it stores schedules, runs manual cycles, and communicates with the valves via low‑voltage wiring. Zone valves open and close water flow to specific groups of heads. Sprinkler heads come in rotor, spray, and drip varieties, each designed for a particular coverage pattern.
Common Controller Models
Hunter offers several controller families. The Pro‑C series targets residential users with 4‑ to 12‑zone capacity and a simple dial interface. The HCC line adds Wi‑Fi connectivity and app‑based management. For larger properties, the ICC2 and ACC2 controllers support up to 54 zones, flow sensing, and advanced ET‑based scheduling. Knowing which model you have determines the exact button layout and programming menus you will encounter.
Preparing for Activation
Safety Checks Before Powering Up
Before you energize the system, verify that the main water shut‑off valve is fully open and that the backflow preventer test cocks are in the correct position. Inspect the controller’s power supply — most residential units plug into a standard 120 V outlet, while commercial units may be hard‑wired. Ensure the circuit breaker feeding the controller is on. Look for any visible damage to wiring, valve boxes, or sprinkler heads that could cause leaks once pressure is applied.
Confirming Water Supply and Pressure
Open a nearby hose bib or faucet to confirm that municipal water pressure is present and within the 40‑80 psi range recommended for Hunter heads. Low pressure will result in poor coverage; excessive pressure can damage rotors and cause misting. If you have a pressure regulator, verify its setting matches the manufacturer’s specification for your head type. A quick pressure gauge reading at the main line eliminates guesswork.
Step‑by‑Step Guide to Turn On Hunter Sprinkler System
- Locate the main water shut‑off valve — usually near the water meter or where the irrigation line branches off. Turn it fully counter‑clockwise.
- Open the backflow preventer test cocks — set them to the “open” position so water can flow into the system.
- Power on the controller — plug it in or flip the dedicated breaker. The display should illuminate and show the current time.
- Run a manual “All Zones” test — navigate to the manual start menu, select “All Zones,” and press start. This pressurizes each valve sequentially and reveals any immediate leaks.
- Observe each zone — walk the property while the system runs. Confirm that every head pops up, rotates (if rotor), and delivers a uniform spray pattern.
- Adjust any misaligned heads — use the adjustment screw on spray heads or the arc‑setting collar on rotors to correct overspray or dry spots.
- Set the current date and time — accurate scheduling depends on the controller’s clock. Use the “Set Date/Time” menu and confirm with the “Enter” button.
- Program your desired schedule — see the Programming the Controller section for detailed steps.
- Save and exit — ensure the controller returns to the home screen showing the next scheduled run.
- Secure valve boxes — replace lids and lock them if applicable to prevent tampering and debris entry.
Programming the Controller
Creating a Basic Schedule
Enter the “Program” menu and select “Add Program.” Choose a program label (A, B, C) and set the start time — early morning (4‑6 am) minimizes evaporation. Assign the days of week or an interval (e.g., every 2 days). For each zone, set a run time based on head type: 10‑15 minutes for spray heads, 20‑30 minutes for rotors, and 30‑45 minutes for drip zones. Save the program; the controller will now execute it automatically.
Seasonal Adjustments and Smart Features
Many Hunter controllers support a “Seasonal Adjust” percentage. Reduce run times by 10‑20 % in cooler months and increase during peak summer heat. If your controller has Wi‑Fi (HCC, ICC2), enable the “Weather‑Based” or “ET” feature. The unit will pull local evapotranspiration data and automatically scale run times, saving water without manual intervention. (See Also:How To Adjust Hunter Pro Spray Sprinkler)
Testing Zones and Adjusting Sprinkler Heads
Running a Manual Zone Test
From the home screen, select “Manual” then “Single Zone.” Choose the zone number and press “Start.” The controller will open only that valve, letting you inspect coverage without running the entire system. This is ideal after making head adjustments or after a repair.
Fine‑Tuning Head Alignment
Spray heads have a radius screw; turn clockwise to decrease distance, counter‑clockwise to increase. Rotors feature an arc adjustment ring — set the start and stop points to match the landscape layout. Drip emitters should be checked for clogging; flush the line by opening the end cap briefly. Proper alignment prevents water waste on sidewalks and ensures even soil moisture.
Common Issues and Troubleshooting
No Water Flow in One or More Zones
If a zone fails to activate, first verify the valve’s solenoid is receiving 24 VAC from the controller (use a multimeter). Next, check for a stuck valve diaphragm — manually turn the valve’s bleed screw to release pressure. Debris in the valve seat can also block flow; disassemble and clean if necessary.
Controller Not Responding
A blank display often indicates a power issue. Confirm the outlet is live, the transformer is plugged in, and the fuse (if present) is intact. For battery‑backed models, replace the backup battery. If the controller powers on but buttons are unresponsive, perform a factory reset per the manual — usually holding “Reset” for 10 seconds.
Leaks at Valve Boxes or Heads
Water pooling around a valve box suggests a loose fitting or cracked pipe. Tighten unions and replace any damaged PVC sections. Head leaks usually stem from a worn seal or cracked nozzle; replace the nozzle or the entire head. Regular visual inspections after each seasonal start‑up catch these problems early.

Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I run my Hunter sprinkler system?
Frequency depends on climate, soil type, and plant material. A typical residential lawn needs 1‑1.5 inches of water per week, split into two or three early‑morning cycles. Use the controller’s seasonal adjust to increase or decrease run times as weather changes. (See Also:How To Use Rain Bird Sprinkler System)
Can I control my Hunter system from a smartphone?
Yes, if you own an HCC, ICC2, or ACC2 controller with Wi‑Fi or cellular connectivity. Download the Hunter Hydrawise or Centralus app, pair the controller, and you can start/stop zones, modify schedules, and receive alerts remotely.
What should I do if a zone won’t turn off?
First, stop the controller manually by selecting “Off” or “Stop All.” Then check the valve’s solenoid for debris or a stuck plunger. If the valve remains open after power is removed, the diaphragm may be torn and the valve will need replacement.
How do I winterize a Hunter sprinkler system?
Shut off the main water supply, open all manual drain valves, and connect an air compressor to the blow‑out port. Blow each zone until only mist exits the heads. Close drain valves, disconnect the controller power, and insulate the backflow preventer.
Why is my coverage uneven after start‑up?
Uneven coverage usually results from misaligned heads, clogged nozzles, or incorrect pressure. Run a manual zone test, observe each head, and adjust the arc or radius screws. Clean or replace any nozzles that show reduced flow. (See Also:How To Install Rain Bird Sprinkler Controller 2)
