Understanding the Echo Speed Feed Head
What Is a Speed Feed Head?
The Speed Feed head is Echo’s proprietary semi‑automatic line feed system. It uses a spring‑loaded spool that advances line when the user taps the head on the ground. This design reduces the need for manual line pulling and keeps the cutting width consistent. The head attaches to the drive shaft with a threaded retaining nut and a keyed drive hub that prevents rotation during operation.
Why Remove the Head?
Common reasons include replacing a depleted spool, clearing tangled line, upgrading to a fixed‑line or blade head, and performing seasonal maintenance such as lubricating the drive shaft. Knowing how to take Echo weed eater head off efficiently saves time and avoids costly service calls.
Tools and Safety Gear Needed
Before starting, gather the following items: a 13 mm (or ½ inch) socket or open‑ended wrench that fits the retaining nut, a pair of adjustable pliers for extra grip, a clean rag, light machine oil, and a small brush for debris removal. Safety gear should include safety glasses, hearing protection, and sturdy gloves. If the unit is gas‑powered, have a spark plug wrench handy to disconnect the ignition wire.
Preparing the Weed Eater for Head Removal
Place the trimmer on a stable workbench or the ground with the cutting head facing up. For gas models, remove the spark plug boot to prevent accidental starts. For electric or battery units, unplug the power cord or remove the battery pack. Engage the shaft lock if your model has one; otherwise, insert a wooden dowel through the cooling vents to keep the shaft from turning while you loosen the nut.
Step-by-Step Guide: How to Take Echo Weed Eater Head Off
- Disconnect Power. Remove the spark plug boot, unplug the cord, or detach the battery. This eliminates any chance of the motor engaging while you work.
- Secure the Shaft. Use the built‑in shaft lock or a dowel to hold the drive shaft stationary. A stable shaft prevents the retaining nut from spinning freely.
- Locate the Retaining Nut. The nut sits at the base of the Speed Feed head, usually marked with an arrow indicating the loosening direction (counter‑clockwise on most models).
- Loosen the Retaining Nut. Fit the socket or wrench onto the nut and turn counter‑clockwise. Apply steady pressure; if the nut is tight, a short tap with a rubber mallet on the wrench handle can break corrosion.
- Remove the Head. Once the nut is free, slide the Speed Feed head off the drive hub. Keep the nut and any washers together for reinstallation.
- Inspect and Clean. Examine the drive hub for wear, clean old grass and dirt from the threads, and apply a thin coat of machine oil to the hub before reassembly.
Reinstalling or Replacing the Head
To reinstall the original Speed Feed head, reverse the removal steps: align the keyway on the hub with the slot in the head, slide the head onto the shaft, thread the retaining nut by hand, then tighten with the wrench to the manufacturer’s torque specification (typically 30–35 ft‑lb). If you are installing a different head type, verify that the mounting pattern matches Echo’s spline count and thread pitch. Some aftermarket heads include an adapter kit; follow the kit instructions carefully. (See Also:How Do You String A Echo Weed Eater)
Comparison Table: Speed Feed vs. Fixed Line Heads
| Feature | Speed Feed Head | Fixed Line Head |
|---|---|---|
| Line Advance Method | Tap‑to‑advance (semi‑automatic) | Manual pull or bump feed |
| Ease of Reload | Quick spool swap, no tools | Requires winding line onto spool |
| Cutting Consistency | Consistent width while line lasts | Width varies as line wears |
| Durability | Plastic housing, moderate impact resistance | Metal or reinforced plastic, higher impact resistance |
| Cost | Higher upfront, lower long‑term line waste | Lower upfront, more line waste over time |
| Best For | Homeowners wanting convenience | Professionals needing rugged performance |
Tips and Best Practices
- Always wear eye protection; line fragments can fly at high speed.
- Keep a spare retaining nut and washer in your tool kit for quick swaps.
- Lubricate the drive shaft threads lightly each season to prevent seizing.
- When reloading line on a Speed Feed spool, follow the arrow direction printed on the spool to avoid jams.
- Store the trimmer with the head removed during long off‑season periods to reduce corrosion.
Common Mistakes and How to Avoid Them
One frequent error is attempting to loosen the retaining nut while the shaft is free to rotate; this simply spins the nut without breaking the torque. Always lock the shaft first. Another mistake is using the wrong socket size, which rounds the nut corners and makes future removal difficult. Use the exact size specified in the owner’s manual. Over‑tightening the nut on reassembly can strip the threads on the aluminum hub; a torque wrench set to the recommended value prevents this. Finally, neglecting to clean the hub threads before reinstalling leads to premature corrosion and a stuck head next season.
Troubleshooting Stuck or Damaged Heads
If the retaining nut refuses to turn, apply penetrating oil and let it sit for 15 minutes. Gently tap the nut with a hammer to break the rust bond. For a head that slides off but the hub is damaged, inspect the splines for rounding; a damaged hub may require shaft replacement. If the Speed Feed spool is cracked, replace the entire head rather than attempting a repair, as the spring mechanism is calibrated for a specific spool geometry. In cases where the head wobbles during operation, verify that the keyway aligns correctly and that the nut is torqued to spec.
Maintenance After Head Removal
After the head is off, take the opportunity to service the drive shaft. Wipe the shaft clean, check for bends or cracks, and apply a light coat of marine‑grade grease to the splines. Inspect the air filter (gas models) and clean or replace it. For battery units, examine the battery contacts for corrosion and clean with a contact cleaner. Reassemble the trimmer, run it briefly at low throttle to confirm smooth operation, then store it in a dry location.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I remove the Echo weed eater head for maintenance?
Inspect and clean the head at the start of each cutting season and after any heavy use that may have introduced debris into the hub. A full removal for lubrication is recommended annually.
Can I use a non‑Echo head on my Echo trimmer?
Yes, provided the head matches the spline count, thread pitch, and shaft diameter of your specific model. Many aftermarket manufacturers list compatible Echo models on their packaging. (See Also:What Size String Stihl Weed Eater)
What should I do if the retaining nut strips?
If the nut strips, replace it immediately. Attempting to reuse a stripped nut can cause the head to detach during operation, creating a serious safety hazard.
Is a Speed Feed head better than a traditional bump feed head?
Speed Feed heads offer faster line advance with less user effort, making them ideal for residential use. Bump feed heads are simpler, more rugged, and preferred by many professionals for heavy‑duty work.
What is the correct torque for the retaining nut?
Echo typically specifies 30–35 ft‑lb (40–47 Nm). Always consult the owner’s manual for the exact value for your model.
