Understanding Your Craftsman WS2200 Weed Eater
Before you dive into stringing your trimmer, it helps to understand the key features of the WS2200 that make the process unique to this model. This will help you avoid generic advice that doesn’t apply to your specific tool, and ensure you use the correct parts and techniques for optimal performance.
Key Specifications of the WS2200
The Craftsman WS2200 is a 25cc 2-cycle gas-powered weed eater with a 17-inch cutting swath, designed for medium to large residential yards. Its most notable feature for stringing purposes is its bump feed head, which accepts .080-inch (2mm) round trimmer line. This line diameter is the perfect balance of durability and flexibility: it’s strong enough to cut through thick weeds, tall grass, and light brush, but flexible enough to avoid breaking when hitting small obstacles like rocks or fence posts.
The bump feed mechanism works by releasing a set amount of line (usually 2–3 inches) each time you tap the bottom of the head on the ground. This eliminates the need to stop mid-trim to adjust line length, making it far more convenient than older manual feed models. The WS2200’s spool holds approximately 10 feet of .080 line, which is enough for 2–3 hours of regular use before needing a rewind.
Why the WS2200 Is a Popular Choice for Homeowners
The WS2200 has earned a reputation as one of the most reliable mid-range weed eaters on the market for several reasons. It’s lightweight (just over 10 pounds) so it’s easy to maneuver for extended periods, it has a simple pull-start engine that starts reliably even in cold weather, and replacement parts are widely available at most hardware stores and online retailers. Unlike cheaper disposable trimmers, the WS2200 is built to last for years with basic maintenance, and learning to string it yourself is one of the easiest ways to extend its lifespan even further.
Tools and Materials You’ll Need to String the WS2200
One of the best things about stringing the WS2200 is that you don’t need any specialized tools or expensive parts. Most of what you need is likely already lying around your garage, and replacement supplies are cheap and easy to find. Below is a full list of required and optional items to make the job as smooth as possible.
Required Replacement Parts
- .080-inch round trimmer line: This is the only line diameter approved for the WS2200. Avoid thinner or thicker line, as it will cause jams and poor performance. You can buy this in 50-foot rolls at any hardware store, or pick up a pre-wound spool if you’re in a hurry.
- Replacement spool (optional): If your existing spool is cracked, has worn line grooves, or is damaged, you’ll need a new spool. Replacement spools for the WS2200 cost $3–$5 and are sold at most home improvement stores.
- Small flathead screwdriver: A 1/8-inch flathead is ideal for prying off the spool cap and removing stuck line. Avoid using a large screwdriver, as it can crack the plastic spool cap.
- Work gloves: Trimmer line is extremely sharp, and the engine components can be hot if you’ve recently used the weed eater. Gloves will protect your hands from cuts and burns.
Optional Tools That Make the Job Easier
- Line cutter or heavy-duty scissors: These will give you a clean, straight cut when preparing your line, which prevents tangles and jams.
- Tape measure: Helps you cut the line to the exact length needed for the spool, so you don’t waste material.
- Small parts tray: The spool cap and any small screws are easy to lose when working outdoors. A small tray keeps them contained so you don’t have to search for them later.
- All-purpose lubricant: If your bump head feels sticky or the line feed is sluggish, a small amount of lubricant on the internal mechanism will smooth out operation.
Step-by-Step Guide to Stringing a Craftsman WS2200 Weed Eater
Now that you have all your supplies gathered, follow these steps to rewind your WS2200’s bump head in just a few minutes. This process works for all WS2200 model years, from older 2010 models to the latest releases.
Step 1: Safety First
Before you touch any part of the weed eater, take a few basic safety precautions. Wear your work gloves and safety glasses to protect against sharp trimmer line and any debris that might fly out of the head. Place the weed eater on a flat, stable surface, and if you’ve used it in the last 30 minutes, let the engine and muffler cool completely—they can get hot enough to cause severe burns. Make sure you’re working in a well-ventilated area, away from children and pets.
Step 2: Disconnect the Power Source
The WS2200 is a gas-powered model, so you’ll need to disable the engine to avoid accidental starting while you’re working. First, locate the fuel shut-off valve on the side of the fuel tank and turn it to the “off” position. Then, pull the starter cord 3–4 times until the engine sputters and stops. This burns off any remaining fuel in the carburetor, preventing leaks while you’re working on the head. If you own an electric variant of the WS2200 (rare, but some models exist), simply unplug it from the outlet or remove the battery pack.
Step 3: Remove the Old Trimmer Line
Flip the weed eater over so the bottom of the bump head is facing up. Locate the round spool cap in the center of the head—it’s usually held on by a small tab or twist-lock mechanism. Use your flathead screwdriver to gently pry the cap off, or twist it counterclockwise if it has a threaded lock. Set the cap aside in your parts tray so it doesn’t get lost. Next, pull the old spool straight out of the head housing. If there’s leftover line stuck in the feed mechanism or exit holes, use the tip of your flathead screwdriver to gently pry it loose. Be careful not to damage the small plastic feed arm inside the head, as this will cause line feed issues later. If the old spool is cracked or the line grooves are worn out, discard it and use your replacement spool for the next step.
Step 4: Prepare the New Trimmer Line
Cut a 10 to 12 foot length of .080-inch round trimmer line. The WS2200’s spool holds exactly 10 feet of line when wound correctly, so cutting a little extra gives you room to work without running short. Find the exact midpoint of the line and fold it in half so you have two equal 5-foot strands. This is critical for bump feed heads, as you load both strands at once to ensure even feeding on both sides of the trimmer.
Use your line cutter to make a clean, straight cut on both ends of the line. Ragged, uneven cuts can cause the line to catch on the spool or feed mechanism, leading to jams.
Step 5: Load the Line Into the WS2200’s Bump Head
First, check the top of your spool for a small arrow printed on the plastic—this indicates the direction you need to wind the line (almost always clockwise for the WS2200, but confirm for your specific model to avoid jams). Align the small notches on the edge of the spool with the tabs inside the bump head housing, then insert the midpoint of your folded line into the small slot in the center of the spool.
Pull both strands of line out through the two line exit holes on opposite sides of the spool. Make sure the line is seated evenly in the grooves around the spool, with no kinks, overlaps, or crossed strands. Hold the spool in one hand and wind each strand around the spool in the direction of the arrow, keeping light tension on the line as you go to keep it tight. Wind each strand 4–5 times—do not overfill the spool, as excess line will rub against itself and cause tangles.
Leave approximately 6 inches of line sticking out of each exit hole. Once wound, place the loaded spool back into the bump head housing, aligning the notches again so it seats properly. Snap or twist the spool cap back on securely, making sure it’s locked in place so it doesn’t fly off while you’re using the trimmer.
Step 6: Test the Line Feed
Before you reconnect the power to your WS2200, test the line feed to make sure it works correctly. Flip the trimmer over and tap the bottom of the bump head firmly on a hard surface 2–3 times. You should see 2–3 inches of line extend from each side of the head. If the line doesn’t extend, check that you wound it in the correct direction, the spool is seated properly, and there are no tangles inside the exit holes. If the line extends too much or falls out, rewind the spool and leave only 2–3 inches sticking out of each hole.
Once the feed works correctly, reconnect the power: turn the fuel shut-off valve back to the “on” position, or plug in the electric model. Test the trimmer in a safe, open area with tall grass to confirm the line cuts properly. If the line feeds smoothly and cuts as expected, you’re ready to use your WS2200 again.
Common Mistakes to Avoid When Stringing Your WS2200
Even experienced DIYers make small errors when stringing a weed eater that can lead to jams, poor performance, and wasted line. Avoid these common mistakes to make the process faster and ensure your WS2200 runs smoothly:
- Using the wrong line diameter: The WS2200 is designed exclusively for .080-inch round line. Thicker line will jam the feed mechanism, while thinner line will break easily and won’t cut effectively. Always check your owner’s manual for the exact recommended line size for your model year.
- Winding the line in the wrong direction: Most spools have an arrow printed on them indicating the correct winding direction. Winding backwards will cause the bump feed to pull line back into the head instead of extending it, leading to constant jams and short line length.
- Overfilling the spool: Winding too much line causes the strands to rub against each other, leading to tangles and jams. Stick to 4–5 wraps per strand, and leave only 2–3 inches sticking out of each exit hole.
- Using old, brittle line: Trimmer line that’s been stored for more than a year can become brittle and break easily, even if it’s the correct diameter. Always use fresh line for best performance.
- Over-tightening the spool cap: Cranking the cap as tight as possible can crack the plastic, making it difficult to remove later. Snap or twist the cap until it’s secure, but don’t apply excessive force.
Tips for Extending the Life of Your Trimmer Line
Proper stringing is just one part of keeping your WS2200’s line in good shape. Follow these tips to extend the life of your line and reduce how often you need to rewind it: (See Also:How To Hang Weed Eater In Garage)
- Avoid cutting against hard, abrasive surfaces like concrete, brick, tree trunks, and rocks. These surfaces wear down line extremely quickly, and can even cause it to snap mid-use.
- Wipe the line clean after each use to remove grass, dirt, and sap that can build up and cause jams or make the line brittle.
- Store extra trimmer line in a cool, dry place, out of direct sunlight. UV rays and moisture can cause line to become brittle and break easily over time.
- If you’re cutting thick, woody weeds or brush, switch to serrated .080 line, which is designed to cut through tough material without breaking as quickly as round line.
- Don’t overload the spool with extra line. Overfilling causes tangles and increases friction, which wears the line down faster.
Comparison: Pre-Wound vs. DIY Trimmer Line for the WS2200
One of the most common questions new WS2200 owners have is whether it’s worth buying pre-wound spools instead of winding their own line from a roll. Both options have pros and cons, and the best choice depends on how often you use your weed eater. Below is a detailed comparison to help you decide:
| Feature | Pre-Wound Spools | DIY Winding From a Roll |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $5–$10 per pre-wound spool, depending on brand and line quality. Name-brand Craftsman pre-wound spools are on the higher end of this range. | $3–$8 for a 50-foot roll of .080 line, which can be used to make 4–5 full spools for the WS2200. This cuts your per-spool cost to less than $2. |
| Time Required | 30 seconds to swap out a pre-wound spool, no tools or winding needed. | 5–10 minutes to wind a new spool from a roll, including preparing the line and testing the feed. |
| Customization | Limited to standard pre-wound lengths and line types. Most pre-wound spools use basic round line, with few options for serrated or heavy-duty line. | Full control over line length, type, and quality. You can use specialty line for tough jobs, and cut exactly the amount you need to reduce waste. |
| Waste | Pre-wound spools often come with 1–2 feet of excess line that is discarded when you replace the spool, leading to unnecessary plastic and line waste over time. | Only use the exact amount of line you need for each spool, resulting in minimal waste. Extra line can be stored for future use. |
| Convenience | Ideal for quick replacements when you’re in a hurry, or if you only use your WS2200 a few times a year. No tools or winding skills required. | Best for regular users who want to save money long-term. Once you master the winding process, it takes just a few minutes and requires no special skills. |
For most casual homeowners who only trim their yard a few times a month, pre-wound spools are a convenient, low-effort option. But if you use your WS2200 regularly, DIY winding will save you significant money over time, and gives you more control over the type of line you use for different jobs.
Troubleshooting Common Line Feed Issues on the WS2200
Even if you follow all the steps in this guide correctly, you may occasionally run into line feed issues with your WS2200. Most problems are easy to fix with a quick adjustment. Below are the most common issues and their solutions:
- Line won’t extend when you bump the head: First, check that you wound the line in the correct direction (the arrow on the spool points clockwise for most WS2200 models). If the direction is correct, remove the spool and check for tangled line inside the exit holes or feed mechanism. Clear any debris, rewind the line, and test again. If the problem persists, the feed arm inside the head may be broken and need replacement.
- Line extends too much or falls out of the head: You left too much line sticking out of the exit holes. Remove the spool, wind the line again, and leave only 2–3 inches of line sticking out of each side. This is the perfect length for the bump feed to work correctly.
- Line jams inside the head: Jams are usually caused by using line that’s too thick, winding the line too tight, or debris stuck in the feed mechanism. Disassemble the head, clean out all grass and tangled line, and rewind with the correct .080 line, leaving a little slack so it doesn’t kink.
- Line breaks constantly during use: This is almost always caused by using old, brittle line, cutting against hard surfaces, or using the wrong line diameter. Switch to fresh .080 line, avoid edging along concrete or brick, and make sure you’re not using line that’s been stored for more than a year.
- Line feeds unevenly (one side is longer than the other): This happens when one strand is wound tighter than the other, or one strand is tangled in the exit hole. Remove the spool, unwind the line, and rewind both strands with equal tension, making sure they don’t cross over each other.
Frequently Asked Questions
What diameter trimmer line does the Craftsman WS2200 use?
The WS2200 is designed exclusively for .080-inch (2mm) round trimmer line. Using a thicker or thinner diameter will cause jams, poor line feed, and reduced cutting performance. Always check your owner’s manual for the exact recommended line specification for your specific model year, as some older variants may have slightly different requirements.
How often do I need to replace the line on my WS2200?
This depends on how often you use the weed eater and what you’re cutting. For light residential use (edging sidewalks, trimming light grass), you’ll need to rewind or replace the line every 2–3 uses. If you’re cutting thick weeds, brush, or edging along abrasive surfaces, you may need to rewind it after every single use to keep it cutting effectively.
Can I use serrated or twisted trimmer line on the WS2200?
Yes, as long as the line is .080-inch diameter. Serrated line is better for cutting thick, woody weeds and brush, as its sharp edges slice through tough material more easily. Twisted line is more durable for edging along hard surfaces, as it resists breaking better than round line. Just follow the same winding process as round line, and don’t overfill the spool.
Why does my line keep jamming even after I rewind it correctly?
Jams are usually caused by three things: debris stuck in the bump head feed mechanism, a cracked spool that catches on the line, or old, brittle line that breaks easily. First, disassemble the head and clean out any grass, dirt, or tangled line. If the spool is cracked, replace it. If the line is brittle, use fresh line. Also, make sure you’re not winding the line too tightly, which can cause it to kink and jam in the head. (See Also:Where To Spray Starter Fluid In Weed Eater)
Do I need to replace the entire bump head if the line feed stops working?
Not usually. Most line feed issues are caused by tangled line, incorrect winding, or a dirty feed mechanism—all of which are easy to fix without replacing the entire head. Only replace the bump head if the internal gears are broken, the housing is cracked, or cleaning and rewinding doesn’t resolve the problem. Replacement bump heads for the WS2200 are widely available online and at hardware stores for $10–$15, and take just a few minutes to install.
Can I use the Craftsman WS2200 without a bump feed head?
Yes, you can replace the stock bump feed head with a fixed loop head if you prefer, but the bump feed is designed specifically for the WS2200 and is the most convenient option for most users. Fixed loop heads require you to stop and manually adjust the line length each time it wears down, which is less efficient for large yards. If you do switch to a fixed loop head, make sure it’s compatible with the WS2200’s mounting system.
