Overview of the Stihl FS 38

The Stihl FS 38 is a compact, gasoline-powered string trimmer designed for trimming grass along sidewalks, driveways, and garden edges. It features a 27.2 cc engine that delivers consistent power without being overly heavy. The tool includes a semi-automatic line feed system, an adjustable handle, and a robust build quality that makes it suitable for medium-duty residential use. Understanding the basic components of the FS 38 helps you become more confident when learning how to start Stihl Weed Eater Fs 38 properly.

Safety Precautions Before Starting

Before attempting to start your Stihl FS 38, always follow these critical safety steps. First, ensure that the work area is clear of debris, rocks, and other obstacles that could cause injury or damage. Wear protective gear including safety glasses, work gloves, and closed-toe shoes. Never attempt to start the trimmer indoors or in an enclosed space due to the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. Make sure the engine is off and the spark plug wire is disconnected before performing any maintenance tasks.

Required Tools and Preparation

To prepare your Stihl FS 38 for starting, gather a few essential items. You will need fresh unleaded gasoline mixed with two-cycle oil at a ratio of 50:1, a clean cloth or paper towel, and optionally a spark plug wrench. Check that the fuel tank has enough mixture to operate for at least a few minutes. Verify that the air filter is clean and that the trimmer line is wound correctly on the spool. Place the trimmer on a flat, stable surface before beginning the starting procedure.

Fuel Mixture and Oil Requirements

The Stihl FS 38 requires a proper blend of gasoline and oil to function efficiently. Use only unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 89 or higher. Mix it with high-quality two-stroke engine oil at a ratio of 50 parts gasoline to 1 part oil. Avoid using old or stale fuel, as this can lead to starting difficulties and engine damage. If you plan to store the trimmer for an extended period, drain the fuel system or add a fuel stabilizer to prevent clogging.

Step-by-Step Starting Process

1. Prepare the Trimmer: Place the trimmer on a flat surface and ensure the area around the cutting head is clear.
2. Check the Fuel Level: Confirm that the fuel tank contains fresh gasoline mixed with oil at the correct ratio.
3. Set the Choke: Move the choke lever to the fully closed position for a cold start, or halfway for a warm start.
4. Prime the Engine (if equipped): Press the primer bulb several times until fuel becomes visible, indicating the carburetor is ready.
5. Turn On the Ignition: Switch the power button to the “On” position and ensure the safety latch is engaged if present.
6. Engage the Starter Rope: Hold the trimmer securely with one hand while gripping the starter handle with the other.
7. Pull the Starter Cord: Pull the cord sharply toward your body in a single, smooth motion until resistance is felt.
8. Release the Choke: Once the engine fires and begins running, gradually move the choke to the open position.
9. Let It Warm Up: Allow the engine to idle for about one minute before applying throttle.
10. Begin Trimming: Once warmed up, engage the cutting head and begin your trimming task.

Cold Start vs. Warm Start

Starting the Stihl FS 38 after it has been sitting unused for several hours or days requires a cold start procedure. For a cold start, set the choke to the fully closed position and pull the starter cord multiple times until the engine coughs or fires briefly. Once it runs momentarily, move the choke to the halfway position and continue pulling until it sustains operation. For a warm start, when the engine has been used recently within the past hour, use only half choke or no choke at all, depending on how warm the engine feels.

Choke and Throttle Positions

The choke mechanism controls the fuel-to-air mixture during startup. When the choke is fully closed, the mixture becomes richer, which helps ignite the fuel more easily in a cold engine. Incorrect choke positioning is one of the most common reasons why people struggle with how to start Stihl Weed Eater Fs 38. Always adjust the choke based on engine temperature and never attempt to start the trimmer with the choke fully open on a cold engine. Similarly, avoid over-revving the throttle immediately after starting, as this can flood the engine.

Spark Plug Inspection and Maintenance

A faulty spark plug can prevent the engine from starting altogether. Regularly inspect the spark plug by removing the ignition coil wire and unscrewing the plug with a socket wrench. Look for signs of carbon buildup, fouling, or excessive wear. Clean the plug with a wire brush or replace it if necessary. The recommended spark plug gap for the FS 38 is typically 0.024 inches. Reinstall the plug securely and reconnect the ignition wire before attempting to start the engine again. (See Also:How Much Is A Battery Operated Weed Eater)

Air Filter Cleaning and Replacement

The air filter plays a vital role in maintaining engine performance and preventing internal contamination. A clogged air filter restricts airflow and can make starting difficult. Remove the air filter cover and take out the foam element. Wash it with warm soapy water, rinse thoroughly, and let it dry completely. Apply a thin layer of air filter oil before reinstalling. If the filter appears damaged or excessively dirty, replace it according to the manufacturer’s specifications.

Common Starting Problems and Troubleshooting

If your Stihl FS 38 fails to start despite following proper procedures, several issues may be at play. A flooded engine often results from excessive priming or repeated failed start attempts. To address this, turn off the choke, set the throttle to full, and pull the starter cord several times to clear excess fuel. If the engine still does not respond, check for a clogged fuel filter, stale fuel, or a blocked carburetor. In such cases, disassemble the carburetor, clean it thoroughly, and reassemble according to the service manual.

Comparison with Other String Trimmers

This comparison highlights how the Stihl FS 38 balances affordability and performance compared to similar models. While it lacks some advanced features found in higher-end trimmers, its lightweight design and reliable engine make it a solid choice for casual users who want to know how to start Stihl Weed Eater Fs 38 with minimal hassle.

Maintenance Tips and Best Practices

Proper maintenance extends the life of your Stihl FS 38 and ensures reliable starting every time. After each use, clean the cutting head and remove any tangled debris. Drain excess fuel if storing the trimmer for longer than 30 days. Store the unit in a dry location away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Periodically check and tighten all bolts and screws. Replace the air filter and spark plug annually or as needed. Keeping a maintenance log can help track service intervals and identify recurring issues.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

When learning how to start Stihl Weed Eater Fs 38, many users make avoidable errors that complicate the process. One frequent mistake is pulling the starter cord too aggressively, which can damage internal components. Instead, use controlled, firm pulls. Another error is neglecting to check the fuel quality, leading to stale gas that clogs the carburetor. Additionally, failing to clean or replace the air filter regularly reduces engine efficiency and makes starting harder. Lastly, ignoring the importance of warming up the engine after starting can strain the motor and shorten its lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why Won’t My Stihl FS 38 Start?

Several factors can prevent your Stihl FS 38 from starting, including old fuel, a fouled spark plug, a clogged air filter, or incorrect choke settings. Begin by checking the fuel freshness and confirming that the spark plug is clean and functioning. Ensure the choke is set appropriately for the engine temperature and try priming the carburetor if equipped. If these steps fail, inspect the carburetor for blockages and consider professional servicing. (See Also:How To Replace Weed Eater Head)

How Often Should I Change the Spark Plug?

Stihl recommends replacing the spark plug on your FS 38 approximately every 100 hours of use or once per growing season, whichever comes first. Frequent users may need to inspect the plug more often and clean or replace it as needed. Always use the correct plug type specified by Stihl and maintain the proper gap during installation.

Can I Use Electric Start on the FS 38?

No, the Stihl FS 38 does not feature an electric start option. It relies solely on a manual pull-start mechanism. If you require an electric start trimmer, consider upgrading to a different model in the Stihl lineup or exploring alternatives from other manufacturers.

What Type of Gas Should I Use?

Use unleaded gasoline with an octane rating of 89 or higher. Always mix it with a high-quality two-cycle oil at a 50:1 ratio unless specified otherwise in your owner’s manual. Avoid ethanol-blended fuels whenever possible, as they can attract moisture and cause engine problems over time.
