Understanding Your Echo Weed Eater Trimmer Head

Before you start rethreading, it’s helpful to understand the two most common types of Echo trimmer heads, as the rethreading process varies slightly depending on which model you own.

Bump Feed vs. Fixed Line Heads

The vast majority of Echo residential weed eaters use a bump feed head, which releases a small length of line automatically when you tap the bottom of the head against the ground while the trimmer is running. This design is convenient for regular residential use, as you don’t have to stop working to adjust the line length manually.

Echo commercial-grade trimmers and some heavier residential models use a fixed line head, which requires you to manually pull the line out to your desired length after rethreading, and often has a small lever to release extra line if needed. Fixed line heads are more durable for heavy-duty use, as they have fewer moving parts that can break.

Regardless of which head type you have, the core rethreading process is nearly identical: you’ll remove the old spool, wind new line onto it, and reinstall it in the head housing. The only major difference is that fixed line heads require you to adjust the line length after installation, while bump feed heads automatically feed the correct length when tapped.

When to Rethread Your Echo Weed Eater

It’s easy to wait until your trimmer stops working entirely to rethread it, but catching the signs early will prevent tangles, jams, and damage to your trimmer. Here are the most common signs you need to rethread your Echo weed eater:

• The line is shorter than 2 to 3 inches: Most Echo trimmers require at least 2 to 3 inches of line to cut effectively, and shorter line will cause the trimmer to sputter and cut poorly.
• The line is frayed, split, or worn down: Frayed line will break frequently while you’re working, and small frays can turn into large tangles inside the head if left unaddressed.
• The trimmer keeps jamming: If you have to stop every few minutes to clear jammed line from the head, it’s almost always a sign the line is worn out or tangled inside the spool.
• You see the bare spool while trimming: If the line is so short you can see the plastic spool when the trimmer is running, it’s time to rethread immediately to avoid damaging the spool or the trimmer head housing.
• The line snaps after hitting a small obstacle: Even hitting a small rock or patch of thick grass should not cause the line to snap frequently; worn line is much more prone to breaking.

If the spool itself is cracked, the notches that hold the line in place are worn, or the outlet holes are damaged, you’ll need to replace the spool entirely rather than just rethreading it. Replacement Echo spools are inexpensive and available at most hardware stores or online, and fit most standard Echo trimmer models.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

One of the best parts of rethreading your Echo weed eater is that you don’t need any special tools or expensive supplies. Everything you need is likely already in your garage, or available for a few dollars at your local hardware store:

• Replacement trimmer line: The correct diameter for your Echo model is printed on the side of the trimmer head and listed in your owner’s manual. Most residential Echo models use .080” diameter line, while heavier-duty models use .095” line. You can buy Echo OEM line or third-party line of the same diameter; both work equally well as long as they are high quality.
• Scissors or a dedicated line cutter: You’ll use this to cut the line to the correct length. A line cutter works best, as it makes a clean, angled cut that feeds through the head more easily.
• Work gloves (optional): Trimmer line is very sharp, especially when new, so gloves can protect your hands from cuts while you’re winding and handling the line.
• Clean rag: You’ll use this to wipe away grass clippings, dirt, and debris from the trimmer head and spool before reinstalling it.
• Small flathead screwdriver (optional): If your trimmer head has a locking mechanism or if the old line is tangled tightly inside the head, a small screwdriver can help you pry out tangled line without damaging the head.

You won’t need any power tools, wrenches, or other specialty equipment to complete this task, which is part of what makes rethreading such a cost-effective maintenance option.

Step-by-Step How to Rethread Echo Weed Eater

Follow these simple steps to rethread your Echo weed eater quickly and correctly, no matter which model you own. Always prioritize safety by working in a well-ventilated area and disconnecting the spark plug before touching the trimmer head. (See Also:How To Start A Featherlite Weed Eater)

1. Prepare Your Echo Weed Eater for Rethreading

Start by taking a few minutes to prepare your trimmer to make the rethreading process faster and safer:

1. Disconnect the spark plug wire: Pull the rubber boot off the spark plug to prevent the trimmer from accidentally starting while you’re working. This is the most important safety step, as even a brief accidental startup can cause serious injury.
2. Lay the trimmer on a flat surface: Place the trimmer on a workbench, garage floor, or even a patch of grass, with the trimmer head facing up so you can easily access the spool.
3. Clear debris from the head: Use your clean rag to wipe away any grass clippings, dirt, or mud stuck in the trimmer head housing or around the spool cap. Built-up debris can cause the line to jam, so cleaning it first will prevent future issues.
4. Align the head for removal (bump feed models only): If you have a bump feed head, rotate the head until the line outlet holes are aligned with the small notches on the spool cap. This will make it much easier to lift the cap off without damaging the tabs.

2. Remove the Old Trimmer Line and Spool

Once your trimmer is prepared, you can remove the old line and spool in just a few seconds:

1. Remove the spool cap: Press the two small tabs on the side of the spool cap (they are usually located on opposite sides of the cap) and lift the cap straight up off the head. If the cap is stuck, wiggle it gently side to side to loosen it, but avoid using excessive force that could break the tabs.
2. Pull out the old spool: Grasp the spool firmly and pull it straight out of the head housing. If there is any remaining line on the spool, pull it off and discard it.
3. Clear tangled line (if needed): If you have leftover tangled line stuck inside the head housing, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry it out, being careful not to scratch or damage the outlet holes or the interior of the housing.
4. Wipe down the spool and housing: Use your clean rag to wipe away any dirt or debris from the spool and the inside of the head housing. If the spool is cracked or the notches that hold the line in place are worn, replace it with a new OEM or compatible third-party spool before continuing.

3. Measure and Cut Your New Trimmer Line

Cutting your line to the correct length is critical to preventing jams and ensuring smooth feeding:

1. Check the recommended length for your model: The correct line length is listed in your owner’s manual, but most Echo residential models use 10 to 12 feet of .080” line, or 8 to 10 feet of .095” line. If you don’t have your manual, 12 feet is a safe default for .080” line.
2. Cut the line to length: Use your scissors or line cutter to cut the line to the correct length. For bump feed heads, cut both ends of the line at a 45-degree angle; this angled cut helps the line slide smoothly through the outlet holes without catching or jamming.
3. Optional: Mark the center of the line: If you have trouble finding the center of the line, fold it in half and pinch the fold to mark the middle, so you can easily split the line into two equal lengths for bump feed heads.

4. Load the New Line into the Trimmer Spool

This is the most important step, as winding the line incorrectly is the most common cause of jams and feeding issues:

1. Check the winding direction: Look for a small arrow printed on the side of the spool, which shows the correct direction to wind the line. Almost all Echo spools are designed to be wound clockwise, but always double-check your specific spool to avoid mistakes.
2. Secure the line to the spool: Insert one end of the line into the small hole in the center of the spool, leaving 2 to 3 inches of line sticking out of the hole to hold it in place while you wind. This loose end will keep the line from slipping out as you wind the rest of the line around the spool.
3. Wind the line tightly around the spool: Wrap the line around the spool, following the direction of the arrow, keeping the lines neat and side by side without overlapping. Wind the line as tightly as possible to prevent slipping and jamming. Do not cross the lines over each other, as this will cause the line to catch inside the head.
4. Stop winding at the correct point: Stop when the line is about ½ inch from the edge of the spool. Overfilling the spool is a common mistake that causes the line to overlap and jam inside the head, so leave a small gap between the line and the spool edge.
5. Secure the loose ends: Tuck the loose ends of the line into the small notches on the sides of the spool to hold them in place. For bump feed heads, make sure both ends of the line are sticking out of the outlet holes on opposite sides of the spool, each about 6 inches long. For fixed line heads, pull one end of the line out to 6 to 8 inches and tuck the other end into the notch.

5. Reinstall the Spool and Test Your Trimmer

Once the line is loaded correctly, you can reinstall the spool and test your trimmer to make sure it’s working properly:

1. Place the spool back in the head housing: Align the spool with the outlet holes in the head housing, making sure the line ends are sticking out through the correct holes. Push the spool firmly into place until it sits flush with the housing.
2. Snap the spool cap back on: Align the tabs on the spool cap with the slots on the head housing, then press down firmly until you hear a click, which means the tabs are locked in place.
3. Test the line feed: Pull each line end a few times to make sure it feeds smoothly through the outlet holes without catching. For bump feed heads, tap the bottom of the head on the ground to make sure the line releases correctly.
4. Reconnect the spark plug wire: Push the rubber boot back onto the spark plug firmly to restore power to the trimmer.
5. Test the trimmer on a patch of grass: Start the trimmer and cut a small patch of grass to make sure the line feeds correctly and cuts cleanly. If the line does not feed, double-check that you wound it in the correct direction and that the ends are not stuck in the outlet holes.

How to Fix Common Rethreading Issues

Even if you follow the steps above exactly, you may run into a small issue the first few times you rethread your Echo weed eater. Here are the most common problems and how to fix them quickly:

• Line won’t feed when you bump the head (bump feed models): First, check that you wound the line in the correct direction (following the arrow on the spool). If the direction is correct, check that the line ends are not stuck in the outlet holes; pull them out a few inches to free them. If the line still won’t feed, check that the bump feed mechanism is not jammed with debris; clean it with a dry rag to remove any grass or dirt.
• Line jams inside the head while trimming: Turn off the trimmer and disconnect the spark plug, then remove the spool and check that the line is wound tightly without overlapping. If the line is overlapping, unwind it and rewind it neatly, making sure not to overfill the spool. Also check that you are using the correct line diameter for your model; line that is too thick will jam easily.
• Line only comes out of one side of the head: This usually means the spool was not aligned correctly when you installed it. Remove the spool, rotate it 180 degrees, and reinstall it so the line ends are aligned with both outlet holes.
• Line breaks frequently after rethreading: Check that you cut the line to the correct length; line that is too long will get tangled in the head and break easily. Also avoid hitting rocks, gravel, or concrete while trimming, as these surfaces will wear down the line quickly. If you frequently trim in abrasive areas, switch to a more durable polymer or serrated line.

Maintenance Tips to Extend Trimmer Line Life

With proper care, you can extend the life of your trimmer line and reduce how often you need to rethread your Echo weed eater. Follow these simple tips to keep your trimmer running smoothly all season long:

• Clean the head after each use: Wipe away grass clippings, dirt, and debris from the trimmer head and spool after every use. Built-up debris can cause the line to jam and the spool mechanism to stick, leading to more frequent rethreading.
• Store your trimmer in a dry place: Moisture can make nylon line brittle and prone to breaking, so store your trimmer in a garage or shed away from rain and humidity. If you store it outside, cover it with a waterproof cover to protect the line and engine.
• Use the correct line diameter for your model: Using line that is thicker than the recommended diameter for your Echo trimmer will put extra strain on the engine and cause the line to break more often. Check the side of your trimmer head or your owner’s manual to confirm the correct diameter before buying replacement line.
• Avoid trimming near abrasive surfaces: If possible, avoid trimming near gravel, rocks, concrete, or fence posts, as these surfaces will wear down the line much faster than soft grass and weeds. If you regularly trim in these areas, invest in a more durable polymer or serrated line that resists wear.
• Lubricate the spool mechanism occasionally: Every few months, apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to the spool mechanism and bump feed lever to keep them moving smoothly. Avoid using WD-40 or other petroleum-based lubricants, as they can attract dirt and debris that will clog the mechanism.
• Replace damaged spools immediately: If you notice cracks in the spool, worn notches, or damaged outlet holes, replace the spool right away. A damaged spool will cause the line to slip and jam, even if you rethread it correctly.

Comparison of Echo Weed Eater Line Types

Choosing the right trimmer line for your Echo model will improve cutting performance and reduce how often you need to rethread. Below is a comparison of the most common line types available for Echo weed eaters, to help you pick the best option for your needs:

For most residential users, round or square .080” line is more than sufficient, while commercial users or those with large, overgrown properties will benefit from the durability of serrated or polymer reinforced line. (See Also:How To Adjust A Weed Eater Carburetor)

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Rethreading

Avoiding these common mistakes will make the rethreading process faster and prevent frustrating jams and feeding issues down the line:

• Winding the line in the wrong direction: This is the most common mistake new users make. Always check the arrow on the spool before winding; winding the line in the opposite direction will cause it to jam and not feed correctly when you use the trimmer.
• Overfilling the spool: It can be tempting to wind as much line as possible onto the spool to avoid rethreading as often, but overfilling causes the line to overlap and get stuck inside the head. Always stop winding when the line is ½ inch from the edge of the spool.
• Using the wrong line diameter: Line that is too thick will not fit through the outlet holes in the head, while line that is too thin will slip and not feed properly. Always confirm the correct diameter for your model before buying replacement line.
• Skipping the spark plug disconnection step: Failing to disconnect the spark plug wire before working on the head can lead to accidental startup, which can cause serious cuts or other injuries. Always disconnect the spark plug first, no matter how quick the job seems.
• Not winding the line tightly enough: Loose, slack line will slip inside the spool while you’re trimming, leading to jams and uneven feeding. Wind the line as tightly as possible to keep it in place.
• Cutting the line ends to the wrong length (bump feed models): For bump feed heads, line ends that are too long will get tangled inside the head, while ends that are too short will not release when you tap the head. Cut the ends to 6 inches long for most bump feed models to ensure smooth feeding.
• Using a damaged spool: If your spool is cracked, the notches are worn, or the outlet holes are damaged, rethreading it will not fix the problem. Replace the spool with a new one to avoid ongoing jams and feeding issues.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to the most common questions about rethreading Echo weed eaters:

How often should I rethread my Echo weed eater?

The frequency of rethreading depends on how often you use your trimmer. For casual residential users who trim 1 to 2 times a month, rethreading every 2 to 3 months is usually sufficient. If you use your trimmer regularly for commercial landscaping or have a large property with lots of thick weeds, you may need to rethread every 2 to 4 weeks. Always rethread as soon as you notice the line is shorter than 2 to 3 inches, frayed, or starting to jam.

Can I use third-party line in my Echo weed eater?

Yes, you can use third-party trimmer line in your Echo weed eater as long as it matches the correct diameter for your model. Many users prefer third-party polymer reinforced line, as it is often more durable and longer lasting than OEM Echo line. Avoid cheap, low-quality line that breaks easily, as it can damage the trimmer head and cause frequent jams.

Why does my line keep jamming after rethreading?

Line jams are almost always caused by one of four issues: winding the line in the wrong direction, overfilling the spool, using line that is too thick for your model, or winding the line loosely so it overlaps inside the spool. Double-check the winding direction arrow on your spool, use the correct line diameter, wind the line tightly without overlapping, and stop winding when the line is ½ inch from the spool edge to eliminate jams.

Do I need to replace the whole trimmer head if the spool is broken?

No, most Echo trimmer heads have replaceable spools that you can buy separately for $10 to $15, no need to replace the entire head unless the housing itself is cracked or damaged. Check your Echo model number to find the correct replacement spool from the Echo website, a hardware store, or a third-party online retailer.

Is it easier to rethread a bump feed or fixed-line Echo head?

Bump feed heads are generally easier for beginners to rethread, as the line is pre-cut to the correct length and automatically feeds the right amount when you tap the head. Fixed line heads require you to measure and cut the line yourself, and adjust the length manually after installation, but both processes are simple once you learn the correct steps. Both head types take roughly the same amount of time to rethread once you are familiar with the process. (See Also:How To Restring A Bolens Bl110 Weed Eater)

Can I rethread my Echo weed eater while the engine is warm?

No, always let the engine and exhaust cool completely before working on the trimmer head. The engine and exhaust can get hot enough to cause serious burns during use, so wait at least 15 minutes after turning off the trimmer before touching the head or working near the engine.
