Understanding Your Weed Eater Spool
Types of Spools
Weed eaters typically use one of two spool designs: single‑line or dual‑line. A single‑line spool holds one continuous strand of trimmer line that feeds from a single eyelet. Dual‑line spools have two separate eyelets, each feeding its own strand, which can increase cutting width and reduce line wear. Some models feature a bump‑feed mechanism that releases line when the head is tapped on the ground, while others use an automatic feed that advances line based on centrifugal force.
Why Rethreading Matters
Over time, trimmer line becomes brittle, short, or tangled. A worn line reduces cutting efficiency, forces the motor to work harder, and can cause the head to jam. Regular rethreading restores the proper line length and tension, ensuring clean edges on grass, weeds, and light brush. It also prevents damage to the spool housing and the drive shaft, extending the overall life of the tool.
Tools and Materials Needed
Before you begin, gather the following items:
- Replacement trimmer line of the correct diameter (usually 0.065 in, 0.080 in, or 0.095 in)
- Protective gloves to avoid cuts from sharp line ends
- Safety glasses or goggles
- A clean rag or shop towel
- Small flat‑head screwdriver (if your spool has a retaining screw)
- Owner’s manual for model‑specific diagrams
Having everything at hand prevents interruptions and ensures you use the right line for your specific weed eater.
Safety Precautions
Always disconnect the power source before servicing the trimmer. For gas models, remove the spark plug wire; for electric or battery units, unplug the cord or remove the battery pack. Wear gloves and eye protection because the line can snap unexpectedly. Keep the work area clear of bystanders, pets, and flammable materials. Finally, never attempt to rethread a spool while the engine is running or the motor is energized.
Step‑by‑Step Guide: How to Rethread a Weed Eater Spool
Step 1: Remove the Spool
Locate the spool release button or latch on the trimmer head. Press or slide it while gently pulling the spool away from the housing. If a retaining screw is present, loosen it with the screwdriver first. Set the spool on a clean surface, noting the orientation of any arrows or markings that indicate winding direction.
Step 2: Clean the Spool Housing
Use the rag to wipe away grass clippings, dust, and old line fragments from the housing interior. Debris can interfere with line feed and cause premature wear. Inspect the eyelets for cracks or deformation; replace the housing if damage is evident.
Step 3: Choose the Correct Line
Refer to the owner’s manual for the recommended line diameter and shape (round, square, or twisted). Using a line that is too thick can jam the feed mechanism, while a line that is too thin may break under load. Cut a length of line approximately 10–12 feet for a single‑line spool; for dual‑line spools, cut two equal lengths. (See Also:How To Open Dewalt Weed Eater Head)
Step 4: Wind the Line Properly
- Insert one end of the line into the anchor hole or notch on the spool, following the directional arrow.
- Wind the line tightly and evenly in the direction indicated, keeping each coil snug against the previous one. Avoid overlapping or crossing coils.
- Leave about 6 inches of line protruding from the eyelet for the initial feed.
- If using a dual‑line spool, repeat the process for the second line in the opposite winding direction (usually opposite arrows).
Proper winding prevents tangles and ensures smooth line advancement during operation.
Step 5: Reassemble and Test
Place the spool back into the housing, aligning any tabs or grooves. Secure the retaining screw or latch. Reconnect the power source, start the trimmer, and gently tap the head on the ground (for bump‑feed models) or engage the throttle (for automatic feed) to verify that line feeds correctly. Adjust tension if the line feeds too slowly or too quickly.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
Many users encounter issues because of simple oversights. Over‑winding the spool creates excessive tension, causing the line to bind or snap. Under‑winding leaves too much slack, leading to uneven feed and frequent line breakage. Using the wrong line diameter is another frequent error; always match the manufacturer’s specification. Forgetting to clean the housing allows debris to accumulate, which can jam the feed mechanism. Finally, neglecting to check the eyelet condition can result in line fraying at the exit point.
Tips and Best Practices for Longer Line Life
- Store spare line in a cool, dry place to prevent UV degradation.
- Trim only dry vegetation when possible; wet grass accelerates line wear.
- Use a twisted or serrated line for tougher weeds; it cuts more cleanly and lasts longer.
- Periodically lubricate the spool bearing with a light machine oil if the manufacturer recommends it.
- Replace the entire spool assembly if the housing shows cracks, as a damaged housing compromises line feed.
Comparison Table: Single‑Line vs Dual‑Line Spools
| Feature | Single‑Line Spool | Dual‑Line Spool |
|---|---|---|
| Cutting Width | Narrower | Wider |
| Line Consumption | Lower | Higher |
| Feed Complexity | Simpler | More Complex |
| Ideal Use | Light residential trimming | Heavy‑duty or commercial work |
| Maintenance Frequency | Less Frequent | More Frequent |
Choosing between the two depends on the size of your property and the density of vegetation you typically encounter.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
Line Feeds Too Fast
If the line advances excessively, the spool may be over‑wound or the bump‑feed spring could be weakened. Remove the spool, reduce the number of coils by a few turns, and reassemble. Check the spring for fatigue and replace if necessary.
Line Breaks Frequently
Frequent breakage often indicates an incorrect line diameter, a damaged eyelet, or contact with hard objects like rocks or curbs. Verify the line size, inspect the eyelet for burrs, and adjust your trimming technique to avoid hard surfaces.
Spool Won’t Spin
A seized spool usually results from debris lodged in the bearing or a bent drive shaft. Disassemble the head, clean the bearing thoroughly, and lubricate if the manual permits. If the shaft is bent, professional repair or replacement is required. (See Also:How To Change Weed Eater String Craftsman)
Maintenance Schedule
Adhering to a regular maintenance routine keeps your weed eater performing at its best. Weekly: Inspect line length and condition; rethread if line is below 2 inches. Monthly: Clean the spool housing, check eyelets, and lubricate moving parts per manufacturer guidelines. Seasonally: Replace the entire spool assembly, examine the drive shaft for wear, and sharpen or replace the cutting blade if your model includes one. Keeping a log of service dates helps you anticipate wear before it becomes a problem.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I rethread my weed eater spool?
Rethread whenever the line length drops below the manufacturer’s minimum feed length, typically after every 30–60 minutes of heavy use or when you notice reduced cutting performance.
Can I use any trimmer line for my weed eater?
No. Always use the line diameter and shape specified in the owner’s manual. Using an incompatible line can cause jams, excessive wear, or damage to the feed mechanism.
What if the spool is cracked or the eyelet is broken?
Replace the spool assembly immediately. A damaged spool cannot hold line securely and may cause the line to eject unexpectedly, posing a safety hazard.
Is there a difference between gas and electric models when rethreading?
The rethreading process is essentially the same; the only difference is the power‑source disconnection step. Gas models require spark‑plug wire removal, while electric models need the cord unplugged or battery removed. (See Also:What Gas To Put In Weed Eater)
How do I know the correct line diameter for my trimmer?
Check the specification label on the trimmer head or consult the owner’s manual. Common diameters are 0.065 in, 0.080 in, and 0.095 in; using the correct size ensures proper feed and cutting efficiency.
