Understanding Your Husqvarna Weed Eater
Before you begin the respooling process, it is important to understand the basic components of your Husqvarna weed eater. Most models use a bump-feed or auto-feed trimmer head, which houses a spool that holds the cutting line. The spool rotates inside the head and releases line as needed when you press the head against the ground or trigger the feed mechanism.
There are two main types of Husqvarna trimmer heads:
- Bump-feed heads: These require you to manually bump the head on the ground to release more line.
- Auto-feed heads: These automatically release line when the motor is running and the trigger is engaged.
- New trimmer line (appropriate diameter and length for your model)
- Flathead screwdriver or small knife
- Clean cloth or paper towels
- Optional: Small container of clean water
- Owner’s manual for reference
- Safety first: Turn off the trimmer and disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental starting.
- Remove the trimmer head: Press the release tabs on the sides of the head and pull it straight off the shaft.
- Disassemble the head: Remove the outer cover and take out the old spool.
- Clean the components: Wipe away debris and old line fragments from the head and spool.
- Insert new line: Thread one end of the new line through the hole in the center of the spool.
- Wind the line: Wind the line evenly and tightly in the direction indicated by the arrows on the spool.
- Secure the line: Leave a tail of about 6 inches and tuck it into the retention slot on the spool.
- Reinstall the spool: Place the spool back into the trimmer head and reassemble the cover.
- Attach the head: Slide the head back onto the shaft and lock it in place.
- Test the trimmer: Reconnect the spark plug and test the line feed.
- Thread the line: Insert one end of the line through the small hole in the center of the spool. Pull it through until about 6 inches remain on one side.
- Follow the arrow direction: Look for arrows molded into the spool that indicate the correct winding direction. Always wind in the same direction as the arrows.
- Wind evenly and tightly: Apply steady pressure and keep the line wound neatly next to the previous layer. Avoid overlapping or loose coils.
- Maintain tension: Keep slight tension on the line as you wind to prevent slack and knots.
- Leave a tail: When you reach the end, leave a 6-inch tail and secure it in the retention slot or groove on the spool.
- For bump-feed heads, gently tap the head on the ground and check that line extends smoothly.
- For auto-feed heads, the line should extend automatically when the trigger is pulled.
- Line won’t feed: Check that the line is threaded correctly through the exit hole and that the spool is seated properly.
- Tangled line: Remove the spool and rewind it carefully, ensuring even layers and correct winding direction.
- Line breaks immediately: You may be using a line that is too thin for your application, or the spool may be overfilled.
- Head won’t stay on: Ensure the head is fully seated on the shaft and that any locking mechanisms are engaged.
- Uneven cutting: Verify that both lines (if dual-line) are the same length and wound symmetrically.
- The spool is cracked or damaged beyond repair.
- The head no longer feeds line consistently despite multiple respools.
- You want to upgrade to a different feeding system (e.g., from bump-feed to auto-feed).
- The trimmer is older and compatible replacement heads are readily available.
- Always follow the arrows: The winding direction marked on the spool is not arbitrary—it prevents tangles and ensures smooth line release.
- Use the correct line size: Mixing line diameters can cause feeding issues and premature wear.
- Keep tension consistent: Loose winding leads to loops and knots. Maintain steady pressure throughout.
- Clean regularly: Debris inside the head can interfere with line movement. Clean the head every few respools.
- Store spare line properly: Keep extra line in a cool, dry place to prevent degradation from UV exposure or moisture.
- Mark your spool: A small piece of tape or marker can help you remember the correct winding direction for future reference.
Both types share a similar spool design, but the removal and installation steps may vary slightly depending on your model. Always consult your owner’s manual for specific instructions tailored to your unit.
Tools and Materials Needed
Having the right tools and materials on hand will make the respooling process much smoother. Here is what you will need:
Most Husqvarna weed eaters use either 0.065 inch, 0.080 inch, or 0.095 inch diameter line. Using the correct size ensures proper feeding and prevents damage to the trimmer head.
How to Respool a Husqvarna Weed Eater: Step-by-Step
Follow these detailed steps to successfully respool your Husqvarna weed eater:
Removing the Old String
The first physical step in respooling is removing the old, worn, or tangled string. Start by turning off the trimmer and ensuring it is unplugged or the spark plug is disconnected for safety. Next, remove the trimmer head by pressing the release mechanism—usually located on the sides of the head—and pulling it away from the shaft.
Once the head is off, disassemble it by removing the outer cap or cover. This typically involves twisting or snapping off the top portion. Inside, you will find the spool with the old line wrapped around it. Carefully unwind the remaining line, taking note of how it was originally threaded through the head. If the line is severely tangled, you may need to cut it free with scissors or a knife.
While the head is disassembled, inspect the interior for any debris, dirt, or broken line fragments. These can interfere with the smooth operation of the new line, so clean them out thoroughly using a cloth or compressed air.
Preparing the New Line
Choosing the right replacement line is crucial for optimal performance. Husqvarna recommends specific line diameters depending on your trimmer model, so check your manual or the old line for reference. Common sizes include 0.065 inch, 0.080 inch, and 0.095 inch.
Cut a length of new line that matches or slightly exceeds the original amount. Too little line means frequent respooling, while too much can cause tangling. A good rule of thumb is to use approximately 10 to 12 feet of line for most residential trimmers.
If your trimmer uses dual-line spools, ensure both lines are cut to the same length for balanced performance. You may also want to consider upgrading to a heavier-duty line if you frequently trim thick grass or weeds.
Spooling the Line Correctly
This is arguably the most critical step in the entire process. Improper spooling is the leading cause of line tangles, uneven feeding, and premature line breakage. Here is how to do it right: (See Also:How Do I Restring My Echo Weed Eater)
Failure to follow these guidelines can result in immediate tangling once the trimmer is turned on, forcing you to repeat the entire process.
Reinstalling the Head
With the spool properly wound and secured, it is time to reassemble the trimmer head. Place the spool back into the housing, making sure it sits flush and the line tail extends through the exit hole in the head.
Snap or screw the outer cover back into place, depending on your model. Ensure all parts are aligned correctly and that nothing is pinched or misaligned. A poorly assembled head can cause the line to bind or the cover to come loose during use.
Finally, slide the assembled head back onto the trimmer shaft. Align it with the mounting point and secure it by tightening any bolts or locking mechanisms. Double-check that the head rotates freely and is firmly attached.
Testing the Trimmer
Before putting your trimmer to work, perform a quick test to confirm everything is functioning properly. Reconnect the spark plug wire and briefly activate the trimmer.
Observe the line feed:
If the line fails to feed or becomes tangled immediately, power off the trimmer and recheck your spooling work. Minor adjustments may be needed, but most issues stem from incorrect winding direction or insufficient tension.
Common Respooling Problems
Even with careful attention, mistakes can happen. Here are some of the most common problems and how to fix them:
Addressing these issues promptly can prevent more serious damage to your trimmer and extend its lifespan.
Comparison of Line Types
Not all trimmer lines are created equal. Different materials and shapes offer varying levels of durability and cutting performance. Here is a comparison to help you choose the right one:
| Line Type | Diameter Options | Best For | Durability | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard Nylon | 0.065″–0.095″ | Light to medium trimming | Moderate | Low |
| Heavy-Duty Nylon | 0.080″–0.105″ | Thick grass and weeds | High | Moderate |
| Square/Cross-Section | 0.065″–0.095″ | Enhanced cutting power | Moderate | Moderate |
| Copolymer | 0.065″–0.095″ | All-around performance | High | High |
| Braided Line | 0.080″–0.105″ | Heavy-duty applications | Very High | High |
Selecting the appropriate line for your needs can significantly improve cutting efficiency and reduce the frequency of respooling.
