When to Reset Your Hunter Sprinkler System

Resetting your Hunter sprinkler system is not a routine maintenance task, but it is a critical troubleshooting step for a range of common issues. You should consider performing a reset in the following scenarios:

• After a power outage or surge: Sudden power loss or voltage spikes can corrupt the controller’s internal memory, leading to skipped zones, incorrect run times, or total unresponsiveness. A reset will clear corrupted data and restore normal function.
• When programming errors cannot be resolved: If you have accidentally entered conflicting schedules, incorrect zone assignments, or other programming mistakes that you cannot fix by editing individual settings, a reset will return the controller to a clean, default state.
• During seasonal transitions: Many homeowners reset their system when switching from summer to winter watering schedules, or vice versa, to clear outdated seasonal settings and start fresh.
• When moving into a new home: If you purchase a home with an existing Hunter sprinkler system, resetting the controller will erase the previous owner’s custom programming, allowing you to set up a schedule that matches your lawn’s specific needs and local watering restrictions.
• If the controller is unresponsive: If the controller does not respond to button presses, remote app commands (for smart models), or manual zone activation, a reset can resolve software glitches causing the unresponsiveness.
• When zones run at the wrong times or for incorrect durations: If your sprinklers are activating outside of scheduled times, running for hours instead of minutes, or not running at all despite correct programming, a reset can fix corrupted scheduling data.

In most cases, a soft reset (which retains date, time, and basic system settings) is sufficient to resolve these issues. A hard factory reset, which clears all custom data, is only necessary for severe corruption or when you want to completely wipe the system for a new user.

Types of Hunter Sprinkler Controllers

Hunter offers a wide range of irrigation controllers for different use cases, and the reset process varies slightly depending on the model you own. Familiarizing yourself with your controller’s model number (usually printed on the front or back of the unit) will help you follow the correct reset steps for your system.

Residential Controllers

The most popular residential Hunter models include the X-Core, X2, and Pro-C series. These wired, non-smart controllers are designed for homes with 4–24 irrigation zones, and feature a physical button interface and digital LCD display for programming. They are typically installed in garages, basements, or outdoor weatherproof enclosures.

Commercial Controllers

For larger properties, golf courses, and municipal irrigation systems, Hunter offers commercial-grade controllers like the ICC (Irrigation Control Center) and ACC (Advanced Control Center). These units support up to 54 zones, advanced scheduling features like multiple start times and cycle-and-soak watering, and modular expansion options. Their reset processes often require accessing the internal circuit board, and may include steps to reset commercial-specific programming presets.

Hydrawise Smart Controllers

Hunter’s Hydrawise line of Wi-Fi-enabled smart controllers, including the HC and HC Pro models, offer remote control via the Hunter Hydrawise app, weather-based automatic scheduling, and water usage tracking. These controllers can be reset either via the physical reset button on the unit or remotely through the app, depending on the type of reset needed. Smart controllers also support cloud backups of your programming schedule, making post-reset reprogramming much faster.

Pre-Reset Preparation

Taking a few minutes to prepare before resetting your Hunter sprinkler system will help you avoid data loss, water damage, and additional troubleshooting steps after the reset. Follow these pre-reset steps to ensure a smooth process:

1. Document your current programming: Write down all custom settings for your system, including zone run times, start times, watering days, rain delay settings, seasonal adjustments, and any special schedules for different landscape areas. If you have a Hydrawise smart controller, export a backup of your schedule via the app before proceeding.
2. Shut off the main water supply to the irrigation system: Locate the isolation valve for your irrigation system (usually near the backflow preventer, often in a valve box underground) and turn it off to prevent accidental zone activation during the reset process. This will avoid flooding, water waste, or damage to your landscaping if a zone turns on unexpectedly. You do not need to shut off the main water supply to your entire home, only the dedicated irrigation line.
3. Disconnect the controller from power: Unplug the controller’s transformer from the wall outlet, or turn off the dedicated circuit breaker for the irrigation system. Wait 30 seconds before proceeding to clear any temporary glitches in the controller’s memory.
4. Gather necessary tools: Most Hunter controllers only require a small flathead screwdriver or a paperclip to press the recessed reset button. For commercial controllers, you may need a screwdriver to remove the front panel and access the internal reset button.
5. Note your Hydrawise login credentials: If you have a smart Hydrawise controller, make sure you have your app username and password handy, as a hard reset will require you to reconnect the controller to your Wi-Fi network and relink it to your account.

Step-by-Step: How to Reset Hunter Sprinkler System?

The exact reset process varies slightly by controller model, but all Hunter systems follow a similar basic workflow. This section covers step-by-step instructions for the most common residential, commercial, and smart Hunter controllers. Note that there are two types of resets: a soft reset, which clears custom programming but retains date, time, and basic system settings, and a hard factory reset, which wipes all data and returns the controller to its original out-of-the-box state. Start with a soft reset first, as it resolves most common issues without requiring full reprogramming of date and time settings. (See Also:How Does A Home Sprinkler System Work)

Resetting X-Core, X2, and Pro-C Residential Controllers

These are the most widely used residential Hunter models, and their reset process is simple and quick:

1. Locate the recessed reset button on your controller. On X-Core, X2, and Pro-C models, the button is typically on the front or back of the unit, labeled “Reset” or marked with a circular arrow icon. If your controller is installed in an outdoor enclosure, open the enclosure to access the button.
2. Use a small flathead screwdriver or a paperclip to press and hold the reset button. Hold it for 3–5 seconds to perform a soft reset, or 10 seconds for a hard factory reset. The controller’s display will flash or show a reset confirmation message when the process is active.
3. Release the reset button. The controller will automatically reboot, a process that takes 10–30 seconds. Once rebooted, the display will show the default date and time (usually 12:00 PM, January 1) for a hard reset, or your previously set date and time for a soft reset.
4. Restore power to the controller by plugging the transformer back in or turning the circuit breaker back on.
5. Turn the main water supply back on to the irrigation system once the controller has fully rebooted.

Resetting ICC and ACC Commercial Controllers

Commercial Hunter controllers have a slightly more involved reset process due to their larger size and additional features:

1. Turn off power to the controller at the main circuit breaker to prevent accidental zone activation during the reset.
2. Remove the front panel of the controller enclosure using a screwdriver to access the internal circuit board. The reset button is a small, recessed button located on the board, usually labeled “Reset.”
3. Press and hold the reset button for 5 seconds to perform a soft reset, or 15 seconds for a hard factory reset. You may see indicator lights flash to confirm the reset is in progress.
4. Replace the front panel of the controller, then restore power at the circuit breaker.
5. Wait 30–60 seconds for the controller to fully reboot. The display will show the default factory settings once the reset is complete.

Resetting Hydrawise Smart Controllers

Hydrawise smart controllers offer two reset options: a physical reset via the device, or a remote reset via the Hunter Hydrawise app. Choose the method that works best for your situation:

1. Physical Reset: Locate the recessed reset button on the back or bottom of the Hydrawise controller unit. Press and hold it for 3 seconds to perform a soft reset (which retains your Wi-Fi network credentials and app account linkage) or 10 seconds for a hard reset (which clears all settings including Wi-Fi and account data). The LED status light will flash rapidly to confirm the reset, and the controller will reboot automatically.
2. App Reset: If your Hydrawise controller is connected to Wi-Fi and linked to your account, open the Hunter Hydrawise app on your smartphone, navigate to the controller’s settings page, and select “Reset Controller.” You will be prompted to choose between a soft and hard reset. Confirm your selection, and the controller will reset remotely. This method is only available for soft resets; a hard reset requires using the physical button on the unit.
3. If you performed a hard reset, you will need to reconnect the controller to your Wi-Fi network and relink it to your Hydrawise account using the app’s guided setup process.

Restoring Custom Programming After a Reset

After a reset, your Hunter controller will return to its default factory settings, so you will need to reprogram your custom watering schedule to match your landscape’s needs. If you documented your existing programming during pre-reset preparation, use that as a reference to speed up the process. Follow these general steps to reprogram your system:

1. Set the current date and time: This is the first step for all Hunter controllers, as the system uses the date and time to run scheduled watering cycles. For non-smart controllers, navigate to the “Set Date/Time” option in the programming menu using the arrow buttons, and adjust the values to match your current location. For Hydrawise controllers, the app will automatically sync the date and time if you enable location services.
2. Assign zone run times: For each irrigation zone, enter the desired run time (in minutes) based on your landscape type, soil type, and local climate. Most lawns require 10–15 minutes of watering per session, while flower beds and shrubs may need 20–30 minutes.
3. Set watering days and start times: Choose which days of the week you want each zone to run, and set a start time for each watering cycle. Avoid scheduling watering during the hottest part of the day to reduce evaporation, and check your local watering restrictions to ensure you are compliant with allowed watering times.
4. Add custom settings: Program any additional features you use, such as rain delays, cycle-and-soak settings for sloped landscapes, or seasonal adjustments that increase or decrease run times based on the time of year.

If you did not document your old schedule, start with a conservative default schedule: 12 minutes per zone, 2 times per week, in the early morning. Monitor your lawn for signs of overwatering (mushy soil, fungus growth) or underwatering (brown patches, wilting) and adjust run times as needed over the following 1–2 weeks. For Hydrawise users, the app’s guided programming wizard will recommend a schedule based on your location, landscape type, and local weather, making setup even faster.

Troubleshooting Post-Reset Issues

In most cases, a reset will resolve common Hunter sprinkler system issues, but you may experience problems after the reset if there are underlying hardware or configuration errors. Here are solutions for the most common post-reset issues:

• Controller is unresponsive after reset: Check that the power supply is properly connected, and that the circuit breaker for the irrigation system has not tripped. If the controller still does not turn on, the transformer may be faulty and need replacement. For Hydrawise controllers, ensure the controller is connected to a working power outlet and that the LED status light is illuminated.
• Zones are not activating: Verify that all zone wiring is securely connected to both the controller and the solenoid valves. Check that the main water supply to the irrigation system is fully open, and that there are no clogs or leaks in the irrigation lines. Also confirm that the rain sensor (if installed) is not activated, as this will prevent zones from running even with a correct schedule.
• Hydrawise controller won’t connect to Wi-Fi: Ensure you are entering the correct Wi-Fi password (it is case-sensitive), and that the controller is within range of your router. If it still won’t connect, perform a hard reset and try reconnecting again. Avoid using 5GHz Wi-Fi networks, as most Hydrawise controllers only support 2.4GHz connections.
• Watering schedule is not running as programmed: Double-check that you have set the correct start times and watering days, and that the controller is not in rain delay mode. Also confirm that your local watering restrictions do not prohibit the scheduled run times, and that the controller’s date and time are set correctly.

Comparison: Reset vs. Full System Reprogram

Many homeowners wonder whether they need to perform a full reset of their Hunter sprinkler system, or if they can simply edit the existing programming to fix issues. The right choice depends on the severity of the problem you are experiencing. The table below outlines the key differences between resetting your system and manually reprogramming it without a reset, to help you make the best decision for your situation.

As a general rule, start with a soft reset if you are experiencing persistent issues that cannot be fixed by editing individual settings. If the soft reset does not resolve the problem, perform a hard reset and fully reprogram the system. For minor adjustments like changing a zone’s run time by a few minutes, manual reprogramming without a reset is faster and avoids the need to re-enter all other settings. Tips and Best Practices for Hunter Sprinkler Maintenance

Regular maintenance can reduce the likelihood of programming errors, memory corruption, and other issues that require a reset. Follow these best practices to keep your Hunter sprinkler system running efficiently year-round:

• Document and back up your programming schedule: Keep a physical or digital copy of your zone run times, start times, and custom settings. If you have a Hydrawise smart controller, enable automatic cloud backups in the app, so you can restore your schedule in one click after a reset instead of reprogramming manually.
• Use a surge protector for your controller: Plug your controller into a UL-listed surge protector to prevent memory corruption from power surges, which are one of the most common causes of Hunter sprinkler system glitches. Avoid plugging the controller into the same outlet as high-power appliances like refrigerators or air conditioners, which can cause voltage fluctuations.
• Update Hydrawise firmware regularly: Enable automatic firmware updates in the Hydrawise app to ensure your smart controller has the latest bug fixes and performance improvements. Hunter releases regular updates that resolve known issues that could cause programming errors or unresponsiveness.
• Winterize your system properly before freezing temperatures: Blow out irrigation lines with compressed air to remove leftover water, and shut off the main water supply to the system. Frozen water in pipes or valves can damage the controller and other components, leading to costly repairs or the need for a full system replacement.
• Clean the controller’s vents regularly: Dust and debris can build up in the controller’s ventilation vents over time, causing overheating and memory corruption. Use a soft brush or compressed air to clean the vents every 6 months to keep the controller running cool.
• Test each zone monthly: Run each irrigation zone manually once a month to check for clogs, leaks, or faulty solenoid valves. Catching small hardware issues early can prevent them from escalating to controller-level problems that require a reset or professional repair.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Resetting

While resetting a Hunter sprinkler system is a simple process, many users make avoidable errors that lead to additional problems, data loss, or water damage. Avoid these common mistakes to ensure a smooth reset process:

• Skipping pre-reset documentation: Failing to write down your custom programming before resetting means you will have to guess at run times and watering days, which can lead to overwatering, underwatering, or non-compliance with local watering restrictions. Always document your schedule before starting the reset.
• Not shutting off the main water supply: If the controller activates a zone during the reset process, it can cause flooding, water waste, or damage to your lawn, garden, or home’s foundation. Always turn off the irrigation isolation valve before starting the reset, even if you think the controller is unresponsive.
• Pressing the reset button for too short a time: If you only press the reset button for 1–2 seconds, the controller may not register the reset command, leaving corrupted programming in place. Hold the button for the full 3–5 seconds for a soft reset, or 10 seconds for a hard reset, to ensure the process completes successfully.
• Performing a hard reset unnecessarily: A hard reset clears all custom data, including date, time, and Wi-Fi settings, requiring you to fully reprogram the system from scratch. Always try a soft reset first, as it resolves most common issues without the extra work of a full reprogram.
• Reprogramming immediately after reset: Give the controller 30–60 seconds to fully reboot after the reset before entering new programming. Attempting to program the controller while it is still booting up can cause errors in your new schedule, leading to missed watering cycles or incorrect run times.
• Forgetting to update the date and time after a hard reset: A hard reset will set the controller’s date and time back to the factory default (usually January 1, 12:00 PM). If you do not update this, your watering schedule will run at the wrong times, or may not run at all if the controller thinks it is still the default date.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will resetting my Hunter sprinkler system delete all my custom schedules?

A soft reset will only clear your custom zone programming, start times, and watering days, but it will retain the controller’s date, time, and basic system settings. A hard factory reset will delete all custom programming, as well as the date, time, language, and any Wi-Fi settings for smart controllers. To avoid losing your custom settings permanently, always document your existing schedule or back up your Hydrawise schedule via the app before performing a reset.

Will resetting fix a Hunter controller that has no power?

No, a reset will not fix a complete loss of power, as this issue is almost always caused by a faulty transformer, tripped circuit breaker, or damaged power supply. Before attempting a reset, check that the controller is plugged into a working outlet, the circuit breaker is turned on, and the transformer is functioning properly. If the controller still has no power after checking these components, you will need to replace the faulty part rather than resetting the system.

How often should I reset my Hunter sprinkler system?

There is no need to reset your Hunter system on a regular maintenance schedule. Resets should only be performed when you experience programming errors, unresponsiveness, or after purchasing a home with an existing system. Frequent resets can wear out the reset button over time, and may indicate an underlying issue like a faulty power supply, outdated firmware, or damaged wiring that needs to be addressed by a professional.

Can I reset my Hunter sprinkler system without the reset button?

For most Hunter models, the physical reset button is the only way to perform a full hard reset. However, Hydrawise smart controllers can be reset remotely via the Hunter Hydrawise app if they are connected to Wi-Fi, for soft resets only. If your controller’s reset button is broken or inaccessible, you can try disconnecting the power supply for 5 minutes to clear temporary glitches, though this is not a full factory reset and may not resolve severe programming corruption.
