Understanding Greenworks Weed Eater String Requirements

Before you begin the string replacement process, it is critical to understand the specific string requirements for your Greenworks model. Using the wrong type or diameter of string can cause cutting head jams, reduced cutting performance, excessive motor strain, and even permanent damage to your weed eater’s internal components. Greenworks designs each of its cutting heads to work with a specific range of string sizes, so always confirm the recommended specifications in your user manual before purchasing replacement string.

Compatible String Types for Greenworks Models

Most entry-level Greenworks residential weed eaters, including the popular G-MAX 40V and 20V lines, use 0.080-inch (2.0mm) diameter round trimmer string for general-purpose cutting of grass and thin weeds. Heavy-duty models designed for overgrown lots and thick brush, such as the 80V Pro series and corded Greenworks models, typically require thicker 0.095-inch (2.4mm) bump line for increased cutting power and durability. Compact, lightweight cordless models with automatic feed heads often use thinner 0.065-inch (1.65mm) string for precision edging and light residential use. Using a string diameter that is too thin will cause it to break frequently, while a diameter that is too thick will jam the feed mechanism and overload the motor.

Bump Line vs. Round Line Comparison

Greenworks weed eaters are compatible with two primary string styles: round line and reinforced bump line. Round line is the standard, all-purpose option for most residential use, while bump line has a reinforced, serrated edge designed for cutting thicker vegetation and advancing via the bump feed mechanism. The table below outlines the key differences between the most common string types used with Greenworks models to help you select the right option for your needs.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Replacing your Greenworks weed eater string requires only a few basic tools and materials, most of which you may already have on hand. Having everything ready before you start will make the process faster and more efficient. You will need:

• Replacement trimmer string matched to the exact diameter recommended for your Greenworks model (check your user manual if you are unsure)
• Work gloves to protect your hands from sharp string edges
• Safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying debris and string fragments
• A small flathead screwdriver (only required for some Greenworks models with locking spool caps)
• A soft, lint-free cloth for cleaning debris from the cutting head
• Optional: Replacement spool cap if your existing cap is cracked or damaged
• Optional: Trimmer line oil for models with metal cutting heads to reduce friction and extend string life

Essential Safety Precautions

Working with a weed eater carries inherent risks of injury from the sharp, fast-spinning trimmer string, so following basic safety guidelines is non-negotiable. Before you begin any work on your Greenworks weed eater, take the following precautions: (See Also:How To Put Line In Craftsman Weed Eater)

• Disconnect power completely: For cordless models, remove the battery pack entirely and store it in a safe spot away from your work area. For corded models, unplug the tool from the electrical outlet and ensure the cord is out of reach to avoid accidental plugging in during work.
• Wear personal protective equipment (PPE): Always wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from flying string fragments, grass, and debris. Work gloves will protect your hands from cuts from sharp string ends and plastic spool parts.
• Lock the cutting head in place: Most Greenworks cutting heads have a locking tab that clicks into position to prevent the head from spinning unexpectedly while you work. Engage this lock before removing any parts to avoid accidental activation.
• Work on a stable surface: Place the weed eater on a flat, level workbench or the ground to prevent it from tipping over while you remove the spool cap and spool.
• Remove blade attachments if present: If your model uses a metal blade attachment for brush cutting, remove it entirely before working on the string head to avoid serious lacerations.

Step-by-Step String Replacement Process

Once you have your tools and materials ready and have taken all necessary safety precautions, you can begin the string replacement process. The following steps apply to nearly all Greenworks bump-feed and automatic-feed cutting head designs, though minor variations may exist depending on your specific model. Always refer to your user manual for model-specific instructions if you encounter any uncertainty.

Preparing Your Greenworks Weed Eater for String Swap

1. Place the weed eater on a flat, stable surface with the cutting head facing upward to make it easier to access the spool and cap.
2. Disconnect power by removing the battery from cordless models or unplugging corded models from the wall outlet. Double-check that the tool is completely powered off before proceeding.
3. Engage the cutting head lock by rotating the head until the locking tab clicks into place. This prevents the head from spinning while you remove parts.
4. If your model has a removable debris shield or guard attached to the cutting head, squeeze the release tabs on either side of the shield and slide it off. Set the shield aside in a safe location where it will not get lost or damaged.

Removing the Old Worn String

1. Locate the spool cap on the bottom or side of the cutting head, depending on your model. Most Greenworks spool caps twist off counterclockwise, but some models have a small release tab that you must press while twisting to remove the cap.
2. Remove the spool cap and set it aside. If the cap is stuck due to dirt or grime, use a soft cloth to get a better grip. Avoid using pliers or other metal tools, as these can crack the plastic cap.
3. Pull the old string spool straight out of the cutting head housing. If the spool is stuck, gently wiggle it side to side to loosen it. If the string is broken or tangled, use a small flathead screwdriver to gently pry out any remaining fragments from the housing.
4. Inspect the interior of the cutting head for built-up grass, mud, or tangled string pieces. Wipe the interior clean with a soft cloth to ensure the new string will feed smoothly without jamming.
5. Check the small string feed holes (notches) on either side of the cutting head housing to make sure they are not clogged with debris. Use a paperclip or toothpick to clear any blockages if needed.

Installing the New Replacement String

1. Cut your new replacement string to the length specified in your user manual. For most residential Greenworks models, this is 10-15 feet of string; heavy-duty bump feed models may require 15-20 feet.
2. Locate the directional arrow printed on the side of your replacement spool. This arrow indicates the direction you must wind the string to ensure proper feeding. Most Greenworks spools require clockwise winding, but always follow the arrow on your specific spool to avoid jams.
3. Insert one end of the string into the small notch at the center of the spool, then wind the string tightly around the spool in the direction of the arrow. Wind 6-8 turns for most models – do not overfill the spool, as excess string will overlap and cause feeding jams.
4. Leave 6-8 inches of string hanging from both ends of the wound spool. These ends will feed through the cutting head eyelets to extend when the tool is in use.
5. Align the small notches on the sides of the spool with the string feed holes in the cutting head housing, then slide the spool straight into the housing until it clicks into place. Make sure the spool is seated fully and does not wobble.
6. Thread each loose end of the string through the corresponding feed hole on the side of the cutting head, pulling until the string is taut. For bump feed models, ensure the string is positioned correctly in the bump feed slot so it advances properly when you tap the head on the ground.

Testing and Adjusting the New String

1. Reattach the debris shield if you removed it earlier, making sure it clicks securely into place on the cutting head.
2. Replace the spool cap, twisting it clockwise until it is snug. Do not overtighten the cap, as this can crack the plastic and make it difficult to remove later.
3. Reinsert the battery into your cordless model or plug the corded model back into the power outlet.
4. Take the weed eater to a clear, open outdoor area away from people, pets, and obstacles. Turn on the tool and let it run for 10-15 seconds to allow the string to extend to its full length.
5. If the string extends too far beyond the cutting head guard, turn off the tool, disconnect power, and trim the excess with a pair of scissors, leaving 1-2 inches of string extending past the guard for optimal cutting performance.
6. If the string does not feed properly when you tap the head (for bump feed models) or does not advance automatically (for auto-feed models), turn off the tool, disconnect power, and check that the string is wound tightly on the spool and seated correctly in the feed holes. Adjust as needed before resuming use.

Tips for Extending String Life

Proper care and maintenance will help your new trimmer string last as long as possible, reducing the frequency of replacements and saving you money over time. Follow these best practices to get the most out of your Greenworks weed eater string:

• Always use Greenworks-approved or OEM replacement string that matches the exact diameter for your model. Third-party string with inconsistent diameter or low-quality plastic will fray and break much faster than genuine Greenworks string.
• Avoid cutting near hard surfaces such as concrete, rocks, brick patios, or wooden fences. Contact with these surfaces will quickly fray and wear down the string, and can also damage the cutting head.
• Clean the cutting head after each use to remove built-up grass, mud, and debris. Accumulated gunk can cause the string to bind, leading to premature breakage and feeding jams.
• Store spare replacement string in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV exposure from prolonged sun exposure will make the plastic string brittle over time, reducing its durability.
• For bump feed models, tap the cutting head gently on the ground to advance the string, rather than yanking or forcing the string out. Rough handling can damage the bump feed mechanism and cause the string to break.
• Inspect the cutting head regularly for bends, misalignment, or worn parts. A crooked or damaged cutting head will cause the string to drag unevenly against the guard, leading to rapid, uneven wear.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced DIYers can make simple errors when replacing weed eater string that lead to poor performance, frequent breakage, or even tool damage. Avoid these common pitfalls to ensure a smooth, successful string replacement:

• Using the wrong string diameter: This is the most frequent mistake made when replacing Greenworks weed eater string. A string that is too thin will break constantly, while a string that is too thick will jam the feed mechanism and overload the motor. Always confirm the recommended diameter for your model before purchasing replacement string.
• Over-winding the spool: Winding more than 6-8 turns of string around the spool will cause the string to overlap and bunch up in the feed holes, leading to jams and poor cutting performance. Stick to the recommended number of turns for your model.
• Skipping the power disconnection step: Failing to remove the battery or unplug the tool before starting work can lead to accidental activation, causing serious lacerations from the high-speed spinning string. Always disconnect power first, even if you think the tool is off.
• Misaligning the string ends: If one end of the string is significantly longer than the other, the cutting head will be unbalanced, leading to uneven cutting, excess vibration, and faster wear on the string and motor. Trim the ends to be even after installation.
• Ignoring debris in the cutting head: Leftover broken string fragments, grass, or mud in the cutting head housing will catch on new string, causing it to break immediately after installation. Always clean the housing thoroughly before installing a new spool.
• Overtightening the spool cap: Tightening the spool cap too much can crack the plastic, making it difficult to remove later and exposing internal components to dirt and debris. Tighten the cap until it is snug, but do not use excessive force.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I replace my Greenworks weed eater string?

The frequency of string replacement depends on how often you use the tool and the type of vegetation you cut. For light residential use (1-2 times per week, cutting thin grass and weeds), you will need to replace the string every 2-4 weeks. For heavier use, or if you regularly cut thick, woody weeds and overgrown brush, you may need to replace the string every 1-2 weeks. You will know it is time for a replacement when the string becomes shorter than 2-3 inches, frays easily when touched, or breaks repeatedly during normal use.

Can I use third-party string in my Greenworks weed eater?

Yes, you can use third-party replacement string as long as it matches the exact diameter recommended for your specific Greenworks model. Look for string explicitly labeled as compatible with Greenworks weed eaters, and avoid cheap, low-quality options that have inconsistent diameter or fray easily, as these can cause jams and damage to the cutting head. Many reputable third-party string brands offer the same performance as OEM Greenworks string at a lower cost, making them a good option for regular users. Why is my new string breaking immediately after installation?

There are several common causes for immediate string breakage after installation. First, you may have over-wound the spool, causing the string to overlap and jam in the feed holes. Second, you may be using a string diameter that is too thin for your model’s cutting head. Third, there may be leftover broken string fragments or debris in the cutting head housing that are catching on the new string. Finally, a bent or misaligned cutting head can cause the string to drag against the guard and break. Check all of these factors if you experience frequent breakage after a string swap.

Do I need to replace the entire spool or just the string?

In most cases, you only need to replace the string itself, not the entire spool. Greenworks spools are designed to be reusable, and you can wind new string onto the existing spool as long as it is not cracked, warped, or has worn winding notches. Only replace the entire spool assembly if the plastic is broken, the spool no longer fits securely in the cutting head housing, or the feed holes are damaged beyond repair.

How do I know if my Greenworks weed eater uses a bump-feed or automatic-feed head?

The easiest way to identify your feed type is to inspect the cutting head. Bump-feed heads have a small slot on the bottom of the head where the string extends, and you advance the string by tapping the head firmly on the ground while the tool is running. Automatic-feed heads do not have a bump slot, and the string advances automatically every few seconds when the tool is running, no tapping required. You can also confirm the feed type for your specific model in the user manual.
