Why Sprinkler Heads Sink Over Time

Understanding the root causes of sprinkler head sinking is crucial for preventing future issues. Several factors contribute to this common irrigation problem:

Soil Settlement: New lawns often experience significant soil settling during the first few years after installation. As the ground compacts naturally, sprinkler heads gradually disappear below the surface level.

Improper Initial Installation: Sometimes sprinkler heads are installed slightly below grade from the start, either due to miscalculation or settling that occurs immediately after installation.

Freeze and Thaw Cycles: In regions with freezing winters, repeated expansion and contraction of soil can cause gradual shifts in sprinkler positioning.

Erosion Around the Head: Water flowing around sprinkler heads can gradually wash away soil, creating depressions that pull the head downward.

Traffic and Lawn Care: Regular foot traffic, lawn mowers, and other garden equipment can gradually push sprinkler heads lower into the ground over time.

When You Should Raise Sprinkler Heads

Not every slightly low sprinkler head requires immediate attention. Here are the key indicators that it’s time to raise your in-ground sprinkler heads:

Water Pooling: If water collects around the base of a sprinkler head instead of dispersing evenly, the head is likely too low.

Ineffective Coverage: Low sprinkler heads often spray horizontally rather than upward, resulting in poor distribution patterns and dry spots in your lawn.

Obstruction by Grass: When grass grows over the top of sprinkler heads, they cannot pop up properly to water your lawn effectively.

Physical Damage: Sprinkler heads that are difficult to access for maintenance or adjustment because they’re buried too deeply should be raised.

Visible Water Channels: If you notice small channels or grooves forming in the soil around sprinkler heads, this indicates improper water flow due to low positioning.

Tools and Materials Needed

Before starting any sprinkler head raising project, gather these essential tools and materials:

• Garden shovel or trowel
• Adjustable wrench or pliers
• Sprinkler head extender riser (if using Method 1)
• New sprinkler head (if replacing entirely)
• Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant
• Garden hose for testing
• Clean rags or towels
• Utility knife (for cutting grass around heads)
• Sand or fine gravel (for backfilling)

Having all necessary items ready will make the process smoother and prevent interruptions once you begin working.

Understanding Extender Risers

Extender risers are threaded adapters that connect between your existing sprinkler riser and the sprinkler head itself. They effectively lift the head higher above ground level without requiring extensive excavation or pipe work.

These components are available in various heights, typically ranging from half an inch to several inches in extension. Choose the appropriate size based on how much you need to raise your particular sprinkler head.

Preparation Steps Before Raising

Taking time to prepare properly will make your sprinkler head raising project much more successful. Follow these preliminary steps: (See Also:How To Fix A Sprinkler Leak)

1. Turn Off Water Supply: Locate your irrigation system’s main shut-off valve and turn off the water completely before beginning any work.
2. Identify the Problem Area: Walk through your yard and mark all sprinkler heads that need raising with small flags or markers.
3. Check System Pressure: Ensure your irrigation system isn’t under excessive pressure, which could indicate other underlying issues.
4. Clear Vegetation: Remove grass and weeds growing around the base of sprinkler heads to get a clear view of their current positioning.
5. Gather Information: Note the make and model of your existing sprinkler heads, as this will help when purchasing replacement parts or extenders.

Proper preparation prevents damage to your system and ensures you have all necessary information before beginning the actual work.

Method 1: Using Extender Risers

This is often the simplest and most cost-effective approach for raising sprinkler heads that are only slightly below grade.

Step-by-Step Extender Installation

1. Excavate Around the Head: Carefully dig around the sprinkler head using a shovel or trowel. Remove enough soil to expose the threaded riser pipe that connects to your irrigation line.
2. Remove the Existing Head: Unscrew the current sprinkler head from the riser pipe. Use an adjustable wrench if it’s stuck, but be gentle to avoid damaging the threads.
3. Clean the Threads: Wipe away any dirt, debris, or old sealant from the riser pipe threads using a clean rag.
4. Apply Teflon Tape: Wrap Teflon tape clockwise around the male threads of the riser pipe. This creates a watertight seal between the riser and extender.
5. Install the Extender: Screw the extender riser onto the prepared riser pipe by hand. Tighten with a wrench, being careful not to overtighten which could crack the fitting.
6. Attach the Sprinkler Head: Apply fresh Teflon tape to the extender’s threads, then reinstall your original sprinkler head or install a new one.
7. Backfill and Test: Carefully refill the excavation with soil, tamping it down gently. Turn the water back on and test the system to ensure proper operation.

This method works well for raising heads by up to 2 inches and requires minimal disruption to your existing landscape.

Method 2: Repositioning the Entire Head

For more significant height adjustments or when dealing with damaged components, you may need to reposition the entire sprinkler head assembly.

Complete Head Replacement Process

1. Shut Off Water and Dig: Turn off the water supply and excavate a larger area around the sprinkler head to access the lateral pipe connection.
2. Disconnect Existing Components: Remove the old riser, head, and any associated fittings. Take note of how everything connects for reassembly.
3. Assess Pipe Condition: Inspect the lateral pipe and fittings for cracks, corrosion, or other damage that might require repair or replacement.
4. Install New Riser: Connect a new riser pipe of appropriate length to the lateral line. Use proper fittings and Teflon tape to ensure leak-free connections.
5. Position at Correct Height: Place the new riser so the sprinkler head will sit at the proper height above ground level, typically ½ to 1 inch above grade.
6. Secure and Backfill: Once satisfied with positioning, carefully backfill around the new installation, ensuring the riser remains vertical and properly supported.
7. Test Thoroughly: Turn the water back on slowly and check for leaks. Run the zone to verify proper spray pattern and coverage.

This method provides the most reliable long-term solution but requires more excavation and technical knowledge.

Method 3: Installing Adjustable Pop-Up Sprinklers

Modern adjustable pop-up sprinklers offer a versatile solution for addressing height issues while providing improved functionality.

Benefits of Adjustable Systems

Adjustable pop-up sprinklers allow you to customize the height of your sprinkler head without extensive modifications to your existing system. These units can typically be adjusted from 2 inches to 12 inches above ground level, accommodating various landscape conditions.

Installation Process

1. Remove Old Components: Completely remove the existing sprinkler head and riser assembly.
2. Prepare the Connection: Clean the lateral pipe threads and apply Teflon tape.
3. Install the Adjustable Unit: Attach the adjustable pop-up sprinkler body to the lateral pipe, adjusting the initial height according to manufacturer specifications.
4. Set Desired Height: After installation, fine-tune the height adjustment to achieve optimal positioning.
5. Configure Spray Pattern: Many adjustable units also allow customization of spray pattern, arc, and distance.
6. Test and Fine-Tune: Activate the system and make any necessary adjustments to achieve proper coverage.

This option represents a premium solution that combines height adjustment with enhanced functionality.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with careful planning, you may encounter problems during or after raising sprinkler heads. Here’s how to address the most frequent challenges:

Water Leaks

If you notice water pooling or dripping around the base of a newly raised sprinkler head, the most likely cause is improper sealing. Check that Teflon tape was applied correctly to all threaded connections. If the problem persists, disassemble the connection and reapply sealant. In some cases, damaged threads may require replacing the affected component entirely.

Poor Spray Distribution

Sprinkler heads that don’t distribute water evenly after raising may have internal mechanism issues or may be operating at incorrect pressure. Verify that the head is functioning properly by removing it temporarily and checking for blockages. Also, confirm that your system pressure falls within the recommended range for your specific sprinkler model.

Head Won’t Pop Up

If a raised sprinkler head fails to activate properly, check for adequate water pressure and ensure the riser mechanism moves freely. Debris or mineral buildup can prevent smooth operation. Clean the internal components according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and verify that the head is properly seated on its riser.

Grass Overgrowth

After raising sprinkler heads, grass may quickly grow back over them if not properly maintained. Regularly trim vegetation around heads and consider installing small protective collars to keep grass at bay. Some homeowners opt for decorative rocks or mulch around heads to minimize grass growth in these areas.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Learning from others’ errors can save you time, money, and frustration. Here are the most frequent mistakes made when raising in-ground sprinkler heads:

Installation Errors

Overtightening Connections: Many DIY enthusiasts tighten threaded connections excessively, thinking this creates a better seal. However, overtightening can crack plastic fittings or strip threads, leading to leaks and requiring complete replacement. (See Also:How To Locate Sprinkler Control Box)

Inadequate Sealant Application: Using insufficient Teflon tape or applying it incorrectly results in leaks. Always wrap tape clockwise around male threads and use enough wraps to create a proper seal without bunching.

Incorrect Height Adjustment: Setting heads too high makes them vulnerable to damage from lawn mowers and foot traffic. Setting them too low defeats the purpose of raising them. Aim for ½ to 1 inch above grade for optimal performance.

Maintenance Neglect

Ignoring Early Warning Signs: Waiting until sprinkler heads are completely buried before taking action makes repairs more difficult and expensive. Address minor sinking promptly.

Using Wrong Replacement Parts: Mixing incompatible components from different manufacturers can lead to poor performance or system failure. When possible, use parts from the same brand as your existing system.

Neglecting System-Wide Issues: Focusing only on individual heads while ignoring broader system problems like pressure imbalances or mainline leaks will result in recurring issues.

Maintenance After Raising Sprinkler Heads

Proper post-adjustment care ensures your newly raised sprinkler heads function optimally for years to come.

Immediate Follow-Up

After completing any raising procedure, monitor the area closely for the first few weeks. Check for signs of settling around the installation site and add soil if necessary. Observe the sprinkler’s spray pattern during operation to confirm uniform coverage.

Long-Term Care

Incorporate sprinkler head inspection into your regular lawn care routine. During monthly walks, check that heads remain at proper height and activate correctly. Clean debris from heads periodically and replace worn components before they fail completely.

Consider scheduling professional maintenance every two to three years. Technicians can identify subtle issues that homeowners might miss and perform preventive adjustments to maintain optimal system performance.
