Understanding Your Homelite Weed Eater Model

Homelite produces several lines of residential and commercial weed eaters, each with a unique string loading mechanism. The three most common types you’ll encounter are bump-feed trimmers, which automatically release line when you bump the head on the ground while running; fixed-line trimmers, which require you to manually pull out new line as it wears down with no internal spool; and curved-shaft trimmers, which are smaller, lighter models designed for precision edging in tight spaces, often with a compact bump-feed or fixed-line system. Knowing your model type is the first critical step to loading string correctly, as the process varies slightly for each design. You can find your model number printed on the bottom of the trimmer head or on the body near the handle, and referencing your owner’s manual will give you model-specific details like maximum line diameter and required line length if you get stuck during the process. This guide covers all three common Homelite trimmer types, so you won’t need to search for separate model-specific instructions.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need

Replacing your Homelite weed eater string requires no special power tools, only basic household items you likely already have on hand. Gather these supplies before you start to avoid interruptions mid-process:

• Replacement trimmer line (correct diameter and length for your model, see the section on choosing line for details)
• Sharp scissors or trimmer line cutter (to make clean, even cuts that won’t fray)
• Flathead screwdriver (optional, for removing stubborn or stuck trimmer heads)
• Work gloves (to protect your hands from sharp line edges and debris)
• Clean rag (to wipe away grass, dirt, and tangled line from the trimmer head)

Most importantly, make sure your trimmer is completely powered off before you start: unplug electric models, remove the battery from cordless units, and disconnect the spark plug wire on gas-powered models to prevent accidental starting.

Safety Precautions Before Starting

Even a simple maintenance task like replacing trimmer line carries small but avoidable risks. Follow these safety steps before you begin to keep yourself safe and make the process go smoothly. First, always disconnect the power source fully: unplug electric trimmers, remove batteries from cordless models, and for gas-powered Homelite units, ensure the engine is cool and the spark plug wire is disconnected to eliminate any risk of accidental startup. Wear work gloves at all times when handling new trimmer line, as its sharp cut edges can easily slice through skin, and to protect your hands from sharp debris inside the trimmer head cavity. Work in a well-lit, flat area so you don’t lose small parts like spool retainers or line clips, and keep children and pets away from your work area to avoid accidents. Never attempt to replace string while the trimmer is running, even if you believe it is turned off, as accidental startup can cause serious injury.

How to Put String in Homelite Weed Eater: Bump-Feed Models

Bump-feed trimmers are the most common Homelite residential model, designed to automatically release a small length of line when you bump the bottom of the trimmer head on the ground while the tool is running. Follow these steps to load string correctly for bump-feed models:

1. Remove the trimmer head from the weed eater. Most Homelite bump-feed models have a plastic retaining knob on the bottom of the head that you turn counterclockwise to release the spool assembly. Hold the head steady with one hand while turning the knob to avoid dropping small internal parts.
2. Take out the old spool and any remaining old line. Discard old line properly, as loose trimmer line can be a hazard to pets, wildlife, and lawnmowers if left on the ground.
3. Clean out all debris from the inside of the trimmer head cavity. Grass, dirt, and tangled line build up over time and can prevent new line from feeding correctly. Use your clean rag to wipe out the cavity, and use the flathead screwdriver to scrape off any stuck gunk if needed.
4. Cut two equal lengths of new trimmer line, usually 10 to 15 feet each depending on your model (check your owner’s manual for exact length, but most Homelite bump-feed spools hold two 12-foot lengths). Put on your work gloves before handling the line to avoid cuts from its sharp edges.
5. Insert one end of the first line into the small center hole in the spool. Most spools have a small notch or secondary hole on one side to hold the end in place while you wind. Wind the line tightly around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow printed on the front of the spool (almost all Homelite spools indicate a clockwise winding direction when viewed from the front). Wind neatly without overlapping lines, and leave about 6 inches of line sticking out from the center hole you inserted it into.
6. Repeat the winding process with the second length of line on the opposite side of the spool, making sure both lines are the same length and wound tightly and evenly.
7. Place the spool back into the trimmer head cavity, making sure the two lines are fed through the small exit holes on the sides of the head. Avoid tangling the lines as you set the spool down.
8. Reattach the trimmer head to the weed eater by turning the retaining knob clockwise until it is tight. Double-check that the head is secured properly to avoid wobble during use.
9. Test the feed mechanism by bumping the head on the ground while the trimmer is running (or pull the line out manually if you prefer not to start the engine). If the line does not feed, confirm you wound it in the correct direction and check for tangles inside the spool or head cavity.

How to Put String in Homelite Weed Eater: Fixed-Line Models

Fixed-line Homelite trimmers are designed for heavier-duty use and do not use an internal spool. Instead, you manually pull out a length of line from a fixed spool inside the trimmer head as the line wears down. These models are common for larger residential and commercial properties. Follow these steps to load string for fixed-line Homelite trimmers:

1. Remove the trimmer head by turning the retaining knob counterclockwise, similar to the bump-feed removal process. Some fixed-line models have a small plastic cap on the bottom of the head that you pry off with a flathead screwdriver to access the internal line spool.
2. Pull out any remaining old line and discard it. Clean out the head cavity with your rag to remove debris and tangled line that could jam the feed mechanism.
3. Cut a single length of new trimmer line, usually 10 to 12 feet depending on your model. Put on work gloves before handling the line.
4. Insert one end of the line into the small center hole in the fixed spool inside the head. Wind the line tightly around the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool (usually clockwise), leaving about 6 inches of line sticking out from the exit hole on the side of the head.
5. Once the line is fully wound, tuck the loose end into the small notch or clip on the spool to hold it in place and prevent it from unwinding during use.
6. Reattach the cap or the full trimmer head to the weed eater, turning the retaining knob clockwise to secure it tightly.
7. Test the line by pulling it out manually to confirm it feeds freely without sticking. If it is stuck, check that you wound it tightly and in the correct direction, and that there are no tangles inside the head.

How to Put String in Homelite Weed Eater: Curved-Shaft Models

Curved-shaft Homelite weed eaters are compact, lightweight models built for precision edging and trimming in tight spaces like garden beds and along fences. Most have a small bump-feed or fixed-line spool, but the attachment mechanism is slightly different from standard straight-shaft models. Follow these steps to load string for curved-shaft Homelite trimmers:

1. Disconnect the power source fully (unplug, remove battery, or disconnect spark plug for gas models) to prevent accidental startup.
2. Most curved-shaft Homelite models have a quick-release lever on the bottom of the trimmer head. Press the lever down and pull the head straight off the shaft to remove it. Do not twist the head while pulling, as this can damage the attachment slots on the shaft.
3. Remove the spool retainer cap, a small plastic piece that twists off counterclockwise to expose the internal spool.
4. Take out the old spool and any remaining line, and wipe out the head cavity with your rag to remove debris.
5. Cut two equal lengths of new trimmer line, usually 8 to 10 feet each (curved-shaft spools are smaller, so they hold shorter lengths of line). Put on work gloves before handling the line.
6. Insert one end of each line into the center holes of the spool, wind tightly in the direction of the arrow on the spool, and leave 4 to 6 inches of line sticking out of the side exit holes. Ensure both lines are exactly the same length to avoid uneven feeding.
7. Place the spool back into the head, feed the lines through the exit holes, and reattach the retainer cap, twisting it clockwise until it is tight.
8. Reattach the trimmer head to the curved shaft by aligning the small tabs on the head with the slots on the shaft, then push it straight on until you hear a click indicating it is locked in place.
9. Test the feed by bumping the head on the ground (for bump-feed models) or pulling the line out manually to confirm it feeds freely without tangling.

Choosing the Right Replacement String for Your Homelite Trimmer

Using the wrong type, diameter, or length of trimmer line can damage your weed eater, reduce cutting performance, and cause the line to break frequently. There are three key factors to consider when selecting replacement line for your Homelite model. (See Also:How To Change Weed Eater Wire)

Common Trimmer Line Types

Trimmer line comes in several cross-sectional shapes, each optimized for different cutting conditions. Round line is the most common, affordable option, ideal for light grass and weeds around sidewalks and driveways. Square (or star) line has sharp edges that cut thicker weeds and small brush more effectively, but it wears down faster on concrete surfaces. Serrated line has small teeth along its edges that slice through tough, woody vegetation, making it the best choice for overgrown areas with thick brush. For most standard Homelite residential weed eaters used for routine lawn maintenance, round line is sufficient, but if you frequently cut dense vegetation, square or serrated line will deliver better cutting performance.

Choosing the Correct Diameter

Trimmer line diameter is measured in inches, and Homelite specifies a maximum diameter for each model to avoid overloading the engine and reducing cutting power. Most small Homelite electric and cordless models use 0.065-inch line, while larger gas-powered models can handle 0.080 or even 0.095-inch line. Using a thicker line than your model is rated for will strain the motor, reduce runtime for cordless units, and cause the line to break frequently. Check your owner’s manual for the exact maximum allowed diameter for your model, which is also usually printed on the bottom of the trimmer head for easy reference.

Cutting the Right Length

As outlined in the step-by-step guides above, most Homelite bump-feed spools require two 10 to 15-foot lengths of line, while fixed-line and curved-shaft spools use a single 8 to 12-foot length. Cutting the line too short will require more frequent replacements, while cutting it too long can cause tangles inside the spool and prevent proper feeding. When in doubt, measure the length of the old line you removed and cut the new line to match for a perfect fit.

Comparison of Common Homelite Trimmer Line Types

To help you select the best line for your specific needs, here is a side-by-side comparison of the most common trimmer line types compatible with Homelite weed eaters:

Tips to Extend Your Trimmer Line’s Lifespan

With proper care, you can extend the life of your trimmer line and reduce how often you need to replace it. Follow these practical tips for maximum performance:

• Wind the line tightly and neatly around the spool when installing. Loose, overlapping windings cause tangles and uneven feeding, leading to frequent breaks.
• Avoid bumping the trimmer head on concrete or rocks excessively. While bump-feed models are designed to be bumped on the ground to release line, frequent impacts on hard surfaces damage the spool mechanism and wear the line down much faster.
• Store your weed eater in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Extreme heat and UV exposure make trimmer line brittle and prone to breaking, even if it is new.
• Cut the line to the exact length recommended for your model. Overly long line puts extra strain on the spool and motor, causing both to wear out faster.
• If you frequently cut thick brush, switch to a heavier-duty line type like serrated or square line, which is engineered to withstand more abrasion from tough vegetation.
• Clean out the trimmer head cavity every time you replace string. Built-up grass and debris jam the spool and cause uneven feeding or line breakage.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Replacing String

Even experienced users make small errors when loading trimmer line that can lead to poor performance or damage to the tool. Avoid these common mistakes to make the process go smoothly:

• Winding the line in the wrong direction: This is the most frequent error when loading bump-feed or fixed-line spools. If the line is wound backwards, it will not feed correctly or will tangle inside the spool. Always check for the directional arrow on the spool before winding, and wind in the direction the arrow points.
• Using line that is too thick: As noted earlier, using a line diameter larger than your model’s rating strains the motor, reduces cutting power, and causes frequent breaks. Always verify the maximum allowed diameter in your owner’s manual before purchasing replacement line.
• Overlapping the line when winding: Overlapping windings create lumps in the spool that prevent smooth line feeding, leading to tangles and uneven line release. Wind the line neatly, side by side, without any overlap.
• Forgetting to secure the end of the line: When winding fixed-line spools, failing to tuck the loose end of the line into the notch or clip on the spool will cause it to come loose during use, unwinding the entire spool of line.
• Not securing the trimmer head properly: If you don’t tighten the retaining knob or cap enough, the trimmer head will wobble during use, damaging the spool mechanism and creating an uneven cut.

Troubleshooting Common Post-Installation Problems

Even if you follow the steps correctly, you may encounter small issues after installing new line. Here are the most common problems and their quick fixes:

Line Won’t Feed When Bumping the Head

If your bump-feed model won’t release line when you bump the head, first confirm you wound the line in the correct direction by checking the arrow on the spool. If the direction is correct, check for tangles inside the spool or head cavity. You may also need to pull the line out manually a few times to prime the feed mechanism before it will work automatically. (See Also:How To Replace Trigger On Echo Weed Eater)

Line Breaks Frequently While Cutting

Frequent line breaks are usually caused by one of three issues: using line that is too thin for the vegetation you’re cutting, bumping the head on hard surfaces like concrete or rocks, or a dull cutting blade at the bottom of the trimmer head. Fix this by switching to a heavier-duty line type, avoiding hard surface bumps, and sharpening or replacing the dull cutting blade.

Line Tangles Inside the Spool

Tangling is almost always caused by overlapping or loose windings. Remove the spool, unwind the line, and rewind it neatly and tightly without overlapping. If the line is too long for the spool, cut it to the recommended length before rewinding to eliminate excess slack that causes tangles.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to replace the string in my Homelite weed eater?

Replacement frequency depends on how often you use the trimmer and what type of vegetation you cut. For light use (trimming grass around sidewalks once a week), you’ll need to replace the line every 1 to 2 months. For heavier use (cutting thick weeds or brush several times a week), you may need to replace it every 2 to 4 weeks. You’ll know it’s time to replace the line when the cutting width becomes noticeably smaller, or the line breaks frequently even when cutting thin grass.

Can I use aftermarket trimmer line in my Homelite weed eater?

Yes, you can use high-quality aftermarket trimmer line as long as it matches the diameter and type recommended for your model. Avoid cheap, low-quality line, as it is more prone to breaking and can damage the spool mechanism. Most major hardware store brands carry compatible trimmer line for Homelite models, and official Homelite replacement line is also available for guaranteed fit and performance.

Why is my new line not feeding even after I installed it correctly?

If you’ve confirmed that you wound the line in the correct direction and there are no tangles, the issue may be with the feed mechanism itself. Over time, the small plastic teeth that grab the line to pull it out of the spool can wear down or become clogged with debris. Clean out the feed mechanism with a small brush, and if the teeth are damaged, you may need to replace the trimmer head assembly. This is a common issue with older Homelite weed eaters that have seen heavy use.

Do I need to wear gloves when replacing trimmer line?

Yes, work gloves are strongly recommended when handling new trimmer line. New line has sharp, cut edges that can easily slice through skin, especially if you’re handling multiple lengths at once. Gloves also protect your hands from any sharp debris inside the trimmer head cavity that you may encounter while cleaning it out. (See Also:How To Adjust Carburetor On Stihl Weed Eater)

Can I reuse old trimmer line when replacing it?

You can reuse old trimmer line if it is not frayed, brittle, or damaged, but it is not recommended. Old line is more prone to breaking while you’re cutting, which can be dangerous if the line snaps back toward you. It is also more likely to tangle inside the spool, leading to feeding issues. Replacement trimmer line is inexpensive, so using new line ensures reliable performance and safety every time.
