Why You Need to Remove Old Weed Eater String

Weed eater string, also called trimmer line, is made of durable nylon designed to cut through grass and small weeds, but it wears down significantly with regular use. As the string cuts, it develops small nicks, frays, and uneven edges that reduce its cutting efficiency. Old, worn string also places extra strain on your weed eater’s motor, as the tool has to work harder to spin the damaged line at the correct speed. Over time, this extra strain can lead to motor burnout, broken spool components, or reduced battery life for cordless models. Removing old, damaged string and replacing it with fresh line restores your tool’s cutting power, reduces wear on internal components, and ensures you get consistent, clean cuts every time you use it. It’s one of the easiest and most cost-effective maintenance tasks you can do to keep your weed eater in top condition.

Signs Your Weed Eater String Needs Replacing

It’s easy to tell when your weed eater string is ready to be replaced, even if you’re new to tool maintenance. Look for these common signs:

• Uneven cutting edges: Frayed, split, or notched string won’t cut evenly through grass and weeds, leaving behind uneven patches.
• Frequent breakage: If the line snaps every few minutes of use, even when cutting soft grass, it’s worn out and needs replacement.
• Poor feeding: If the string won’t advance automatically (for automatic feed heads) or you have to bump the head repeatedly to get more line to feed out, the old line is tangled or damaged.
• Burning smell: A burning smell while using your weed eater means the motor is overworking to spin damaged, heavy string. Replacing the line will reduce strain and eliminate the odor.
• Clumped grass: If your weed eater pushes grass into clumps instead of cutting it cleanly, the string is too dull to work effectively.

If you notice any of these signs, remove the old string and install fresh line right away to avoid further damage to your tool.

Benefits of Regular Weed Eater Maintenance

Replacing old string is just one part of a regular maintenance routine that keeps your weed eater running smoothly for years. Consistent maintenance, including cleaning the air filter, checking the spark plug for gas models, and lubricating moving parts, extends your tool’s lifespan by 2 to 3 years on average. It also improves fuel efficiency for gas-powered weed eaters, reduces strain on the motor, and ensures consistent cutting performance every time you use the tool. A well-maintained weed eater also requires less physical effort to operate, as it cuts through weeds cleanly without requiring extra force from the user. Spending 10 to 15 minutes on maintenance after each use saves you hundreds of dollars in repair or replacement costs over the life of the tool.

Tools You’ll Need to Pull Out Old Weed Eater String

You don’t need any specialty tools to remove old weed eater string – all the items you need are likely already in your household toolbox. Gather these supplies before you start to make the process faster and easier:

• Work gloves: Thick work gloves protect your hands from sharp, frayed string edges that can cause cuts while you pull out old line.
• Screwdriver: Most spool covers are secured with flathead or Phillips screws. Check your tool’s head to see which type you need before starting.
• Needle-nose pliers: These grab stuck or tightly wound string that you can’t pull out with your fingers.
• Small wire brush: Used to scrub away caked-on grass, dirt, and old grease from the spool and head housing after you remove the old string.
• Clean rags: For wiping down debris and excess lubricant from spool and head components.
• Optional: Light machine oil or silicone spray: Lubricates sticky spools to ensure smooth operation after you install new string.

If you have a twist-lock spool cover, you won’t even need a screwdriver for the first step. Most of these tools are inexpensive and reusable for future weed eater maintenance.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Pull String out of Weed Eater

Removing old weed eater string is a straightforward process that takes 5 to 15 minutes, depending on your tool’s model and how worn the old string is. Follow these steps to remove old string safely and avoid damaging your tool’s components.

Pre-Work Safety Checks

Before you touch any part of your weed eater, take these quick safety steps to avoid injury or accidental damage to the tool:

1. Disconnect the power source: For gas-powered weed eaters, remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug to prevent accidental startup. For cordless models, remove the battery pack entirely. For corded electric models, unplug the tool from the outlet.
2. Lay the tool on a flat surface: Place your weed eater on a clean work mat or flat table to catch small parts, screws, and debris as you work. This also prevents the tool from rolling or moving while you remove the spool cover.
3. Put on work gloves: Frayed old string has sharp edges that can cut your fingers, so wear thick work gloves for the entire process.

These steps take less than a minute, but they prevent common injuries and ensure you can work on the tool safely.

Removing the Spool Cover

The spool cover is the plastic or metal housing that protects the trimmer line spool and feed mechanism. Removing it gives you access to the old string inside. The process varies slightly depending on your tool’s design: (See Also:How To Thread Black And Decker Weed Eater)

1. For screw-secured covers: Use the appropriate screwdriver to carefully remove the 2 to 4 screws holding the cover in place. Set the screws aside in a small container or on a magnetic mat so you don’t lose them.
2. For twist-lock covers: Grip the cover firmly and turn it counterclockwise (left) to release the lock. Most twist-lock covers will pop off slightly once unlocked, so you can pull it straight off the head.
3. Inspect the gasket: If your spool cover has a rubber gasket around the edge, check it for cracks or wear before setting the cover aside. A damaged gasket can let debris and moisture into the head, so replace it if needed before reinstalling the cover later.

Once the cover is removed, you’ll see the old string wound around the spool inside the head housing.

Extracting the Old String

This is the core step of the process, and it’s usually the quickest part of the job. Follow these steps to remove all the old string without damaging the spool:

1. Pull out loose string first: Use your gloved fingers to pull out as much of the loose old string as possible. Most of the line will come out easily if it’s already frayed or broken.
2. Use pliers for stuck string: If the string is wound tightly around the spool and won’t budge, grab the end with needle-nose pliers and pull it straight out, parallel to the spool. Pulling at an angle can cause the string to snag on the spool’s notches and break, leaving fragments inside.
3. Release feed mechanism tension (for automatic heads): If you have an automatic feed head, the feed mechanism may lock the spool in place when the cover is removed. Rotate the spool clockwise by hand to unwind the remaining string and release the tension. Most automatic heads lock when removed to prevent line from spooling out accidentally.
4. Remove stuck fragments: If small pieces of broken string are jammed between the spool and the head housing, use the tip of a flathead screwdriver or needle-nose pliers to gently pry them loose. Take care not to scratch or damage the spool’s notches, which hold the new string in place.
5. Check for leftover debris: Once all the string is removed, inspect the spool and head housing to make sure no small string fragments are left behind. These can cause jams when you install new line later.

Cleaning the Spool and Head

Once the old string is completely removed, take a few minutes to clean the spool and head housing to ensure your new string feeds smoothly:

1. Scrub away caked-on debris: Use the small wire brush to scrub off grass clippings, dirt, and old grease that has built up on the spool and inside the head housing. Pay special attention to the area around the feed mechanism, as small debris can jam the moving parts.
2. Wipe down surfaces: Use a clean rag to wipe away loosened debris and excess grease. If there’s sticky old lubricant, use a small amount of rubbing alcohol or degreaser to clean it off, then dry the parts thoroughly with a second rag.
3. Inspect the spool for damage: Check the spool for cracks, broken notches, or worn edges. If the spool is damaged, you’ll need to replace it before installing new string, as a broken spool will cause the new line to jam or feed incorrectly.

Cleaning the spool only takes a few minutes, but it prevents common issues like jamming and uneven feeding when you install new string later.

Preparing for New String Installation

Once the spool is clean and undamaged, you’re ready to install fresh trimmer line. Follow these steps to prepare for installation:

1. Check your user manual for line specifications: Make sure you have the correct diameter and length of trimmer line for your weed eater model. Using the wrong size line can damage the spool and feed mechanism, so always follow the manufacturer’s recommendations.
2. Wind the new string correctly: Almost all weed eater spools require you to wind the line clockwise, but check your manual to confirm. Wind the line tightly and evenly around the spool, leaving 6 to 8 inches of line sticking out the feed hole to start.
3. Reassemble the head: Once the new string is wound, place the spool back into the head housing, align the notches, and reattach the spool cover. For screw-secured covers, tighten the screws firmly but don’t overtighten, as this can crack the plastic cover. For twist-lock covers, turn it clockwise until it clicks into place.

If you’re not installing new string right away, you can leave the spool out to air dry completely, or cover the head with a clean cloth to keep debris out. Many homeowners choose to install fresh line immediately after removing the old, so they don’t have to repeat the process later.

Comparison: Manual vs. Automatic Weed Eater Head String Removal

The process of removing old string varies slightly depending on whether you have a manual feed or automatic feed weed eater head. While the core steps of removing the cover, extracting the old line, and cleaning the spool are the same for both types, there are key differences in ease of use and risk of damage. The table below breaks down these differences to help you understand what to expect based on your tool’s design.

Regardless of your head type, the step-by-step guide above works for both manual and automatic models, so you can follow the same process to remove old string safely.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Removing Weed Eater String

Even a simple task like removing weed eater string can lead to damage or injury if you make common errors. Avoid these mistakes to complete the job quickly and safely:

1. Skipping power disconnection: Failing to disconnect the spark plug, remove the battery, or unplug the tool can lead to accidental startup while you’re working on the head, causing serious injury. Always disconnect the power source first, no matter how short the job is.
2. Losing small screws: Spool cover screws are tiny and easy to lose if you set them down on an uneven surface. Store them in a small magnetic parts tray or a sealed bag while you work to avoid losing them.
3. Damaging spool notches: Using sharp metal tools like screwdrivers to pry stuck string out can break the small notches on the spool that hold the new string in place. Always use needle-nose pliers to pull out stuck string, and only use a screwdriver as a last resort, being careful not to scratch the spool.
4. Leaving string fragments inside: Small pieces of broken old string can get stuck between the spool and the head housing, causing jams when you install new line. Always inspect the spool and housing thoroughly after removing old string to make sure no fragments are left behind.
5. Skipping the cleaning step: Built-up grass clippings, dirt, and old grease can cause new string to feed incorrectly or jam the spool. Even a quick wipe-down of the spool and head will prevent these issues later.

Avoiding these mistakes will save you time, prevent damage to your tool, and ensure your new string works as expected. (See Also:Does Family Dollar Carry Weed Eater String)

Pro Tips for Easy String Removal and Longevity

Use these expert tips to make string removal even faster, and extend the life of your new trimmer line:

• Keep a spare spool on hand: Spools are inexpensive, and keeping a spare in your toolbox means you can replace a damaged spool immediately if you break the notches during removal, instead of waiting for a replacement part to arrive.
• Use the correct line size: Always check your weed eater’s user manual for the recommended line diameter. Using line that’s too thick can damage the spool and feed mechanism, while line that’s too thin will break frequently and cut poorly.
• Lubricate the spool after cleaning: Wipe a small amount of silicone spray or light machine oil on the spool’s rotating parts after cleaning to reduce friction and help the string feed smoothly.
• Replace string early: Don’t wait until the string is completely frayed and broken to replace it. Small nicks and wear that aren’t visible to the naked eye can cause frequent breakage and strain on the motor, so inspect your string before each use and replace it at the first sign of wear.
• Store your weed eater properly: Exposure to moisture, extreme heat, and cold can degrade trimmer line faster, making it brittle and prone to breaking. Store your weed eater in a dry, temperature-controlled space, and remove old string if you’re putting the tool away for the season.

These small habits will make future string removal even easier, and keep your weed eater running smoothly for years.

Troubleshooting Stuck or Jammed String

Even with careful removal, you may run into issues with stuck or jammed old string. Here are solutions to the most common problems:

1. The string won’t pull out at all: This is almost always caused by the feed mechanism locking the spool in place. For automatic feed heads, rotate the spool clockwise by hand to release the tension. For manual heads, make sure you’re pulling the string straight out, not at an angle, which can cause it to snag on the spool notches.
2. The string snaps and leaves fragments inside: Use needle-nose pliers to grab stuck pieces, or a small hook tool to fish them out of the spool. You can also blow compressed air into the spool opening to dislodge small, hard-to-reach fragments.
3. The spool won’t rotate after removing the cover: Debris is likely jammed between the spool and the head housing. Use the wire brush to clean around the edges of the spool, then try rotating it again. If it still won’t move, check for broken parts in the feed mechanism that may need to be replaced.
4. The spool cover won’t come off: For screw-secured covers, check for stripped screws that won’t turn. Use a screwdriver with a larger tip to get a better grip, or apply a small amount of penetrating oil to loosen stuck screws. For twist-lock covers, make sure you’re turning it counterclockwise (the standard direction for release). If it’s still stuck, use a rubber grip to get more torque, and avoid forcing it with metal tools that can crack the plastic cover.

If you’ve tried these fixes and still can’t remove the old string, consult your weed eater’s user manual for model-specific troubleshooting tips, or contact the manufacturer’s customer support for assistance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Often Should I Replace My Weed Eater String?

Most homeowners need to replace their weed eater string every 10 to 20 hours of use, depending on the terrain they’re cutting. If you regularly cut thick, woody weeds, rocky ground, or areas with lots of gravel, the abrasive surfaces will wear down string faster, so you may need to replace it every 5 to 10 hours. Inspect your string before each use for frays, nicks, or uneven edges, and replace it as soon as you notice wear to avoid damage to your tool.

Can I Reuse Old Weed Eater String?

No, it’s not recommended to reuse old weed eater string, even if it looks only slightly worn. Small nicks and internal frays that aren’t visible to the naked eye can cause the string to break frequently during use, and can also damage the spool and feed mechanism. Trimmer line is very inexpensive, so replacing it with fresh line is the safest, most effective way to ensure clean cuts and prevent unnecessary wear on your weed eater. Why Won’t the Old String Come Out of My Weed Eater?

The most common reasons old string won’t come out are: 1) the feed mechanism is locked, so you need to rotate the spool clockwise to release tension, 2) the string is wound too tightly around the spool, so you need to use needle-nose pliers to grab the end and pull it straight out, or 3) small fragments of broken string are jammed between the spool and the head housing, so you need to clean out the debris first. If you’ve tried these steps and the string still won’t budge, check your user manual for model-specific troubleshooting tips, as some heads have locking mechanisms that require a special release tool.

Do I Need Special Tools to Remove Weed Eater String?

No, you don’t need any special tools to remove weed eater string. All the tools you need are common household items: a screwdriver (flathead or Phillips, depending on your spool cover), needle-nose pliers, work gloves, and a small brush for cleaning. Most automatic feed heads don’t even require a screwdriver, as the cover twists off by hand. The only specialty tool you might use is a spool wrench, which comes with some weed eater models, but it’s not required for most jobs.

Can I Sharpen Old Weed Eater String Instead of Replacing It?

No, you cannot sharpen weed eater string. Unlike metal blades, nylon trimmer line is designed to be replaced when worn, not sharpened. Attempting to sharpen it will only cause it to break more frequently, and can create sharp, jagged edges that are dangerous if they fly off during use. Replacing old string with fresh line is the only safe and effective way to restore cutting performance.
