Understanding Your Kobalt 80V Weed Eater Power Head

The power head is the core component of your Kobalt 80V weed eater that drives the trimmer, and the string loading mechanism is built into the detachable trimmer head attached to the power head. Kobalt 80V models come with two primary trimmer head designs: single-line and dual-line (paddle) heads, and the loading process varies slightly between them. Knowing which type you have is the first step to a successful reload, as using the wrong process for your head type will lead to tangles, feeding issues, and poor cutting performance. Most Kobalt 80V weed eaters use a quick-release spool system that makes removing and reloading the spool fast and tool-free.

Key Components of the Trimmer Head

Before you start the reload process, familiarize yourself with the key parts of your trimmer head to avoid confusion during loading. The main components include:

• Spool: The small, round cylinder that holds the trimmer string. It has notches to hold the loose end of the string in place while loading, and a directional arrow indicating which way to wrap the string.
• Spool cover: The plastic cover that snaps or twists onto the trimmer head housing to retain the spool and keep the string from coming loose during use.
• Line release button/knob: A small button or knob located on the bottom or side of the trimmer head that lets you remove the spool cover without tools.
• String exit holes: Small openings in the trimmer head housing where the string feeds out during use. Single-line heads have one exit hole, while dual-line heads have two.
• Trimmer string: The cutting component that spins at high speed to cut grass and weeds. Kobalt 80V models use either 0.080-inch or 0.095-inch diameter string, depending on the model’s power and intended use.

When to Replace or Reload Your Weed Eater String

You don’t need to wait for the string to break completely to reload your Kobalt 80V weed eater. In fact, reloading before the string is completely worn out will improve cutting performance and reduce strain on the motor. Common signs that you need to reload your string include:

• The string is shorter than 2-3 inches from the trimmer head housing, which reduces cutting efficiency and makes edging difficult.
• The string is frayed, worn down, or has visible nicks and cuts from hitting hard surfaces.
• The weed eater is struggling to cut through thick grass or weeds, even when the string is at the correct length.
• The string is feeding unevenly, getting stuck, or tangling regularly during use.
• You’re switching to a different type of string (for example, from round to square for thicker weeds) even if the old string is still intact.

Step-by-Step: How to Load Kobalt 80v Weed Eater String

The exact steps for loading your Kobalt 80V weed eater depend on whether you have a single-line or dual-line trimmer head, but all models share a few universal prep steps first. Below, we’ve broken the process into universal prep steps, followed by type-specific instructions for each head design.

Universal prep steps for all Kobalt 80V models:

1. Disconnect the battery from your weed eater by pressing the release button on the battery pack and pulling it straight out of the tool’s battery port. This critical safety step prevents accidental startup while you work on the trimmer head.
2. Lay the weed eater on a flat, stable surface with the trimmer head facing up. Remove the shoulder strap first if your model is equipped with one to avoid tangling.
3. Locate the spool release mechanism, usually a small knob, button, or tab on the bottom or side of the trimmer head cover, marked with a release icon. Consult your user manual if you cannot find it.

Loading for Single-Line Trimmer Heads

Single-line heads are the most common design for residential Kobalt 80V weed eaters, using a single piece of string for cutting. Follow these steps to load a single-line head:

1. Press the spool release button or turn the release knob counterclockwise to remove the spool cover, then set it aside safely.
2. Pull the old spool out of the housing and discard any remaining old string.
3. Feed one end of your new 0.080 or 0.095-inch Kobalt-compatible trimmer string through the exit hole in the housing, leaving 6 inches sticking out from the outside.
4. Align the spool notch with the housing tab, place the spool into the housing, and make sure the string follows the directional arrow printed on the spool.
5. Wrap the string tightly around the spool in the direction of the arrow, leaving 6-8 inches hanging out the exit hole, and avoid overlapping layers.
6. Tuck the loose end of the string into the notch on the spool to hold it in place once the spool is full (10-15 feet of string for most models).
7. Replace the spool cover, aligning the tabs, and press firmly until it clicks or turn the release knob clockwise to lock it.
8. Pull the loose string end to release it from the notch, then cut excess so 6-8 inches sticks out of the exit hole.
9. Reconnect the battery, press the trigger to test the feed, and tap the head lightly on the ground if the string doesn’t extend automatically.

Loading for Dual-Line (Paddle) Trimmer Heads

Dual-line (also called paddle) heads use two separate pieces of string for faster, more efficient cutting, and are common on heavier-duty Kobalt 80V models designed for commercial or large residential use. The loading process is similar to single-line heads but uses two strings. Follow these steps to load a dual-line head: (See Also:How Does An Electric Weed Eater Work)

1. Complete the universal prep steps: disconnect the battery, lay the trimmer flat, and release the spool cover.
2. Remove the old spool and discard any remaining string.
3. Cut two 10-15 foot lengths of string, feed one end of each through the two separate exit holes, leaving 6 inches sticking out from each.
4. Align the spool notch with the housing tab, place the spool into the housing, and seat each string in its own separate groove on the spool to avoid tangling.
5. Wrap each string tightly around its respective groove, following the directional arrow on the spool, with no overlapping.
6. Tuck the loose end of each string into the spool notches once the spool is full.
7. Replace the spool cover, align the tabs, and lock it in place by pressing firmly or turning the release knob clockwise.
8. Pull the loose ends to release them from the notches, cut excess so 6-8 inches sticks out of each exit hole.
9. Reconnect the battery, test the feed, and adjust string lengths if one feeds faster than the other to keep them even.

Choosing the Right Replacement String for Your Kobalt 80V Model

Not all trimmer string is created equal, and using the wrong type can reduce cutting performance, damage your trimmer head, or cause feeding issues. Kobalt 80V weed eaters typically use 0.080-inch (for light residential use) or 0.095-inch (for thicker weeds and heavier use) diameter string, but you can choose between different cross-sections depending on your needs. Below is a comparison of the most common string types to help you choose the right one for your use case.

For most users, twisted string is a good all-around choice, while square string is better for tough, overgrown areas. Silicone-coated string is ideal for wet, muddy areas or locations with lots of abrasive debris like gravel, as it resists wear far better than standard string. Always check your user manual for the maximum recommended string diameter for your specific model, as using string that’s too thick can overload the motor and reduce battery runtime.

Tips for Extending Your Weed Eater String Life

Proper maintenance and usage habits will extend the life of your trimmer string and reduce how often you need to reload. Follow these tips to get the most out of your string:

• Store your weed eater and spare string in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Extreme heat and UV exposure can make string brittle and prone to breaking.
• Tap the trimmer head on the ground only when necessary to advance the string. Excessive tapping wears down the string faster and can damage the spool and trimmer head housing over time.
• Avoid cutting against hard surfaces like concrete, rocks, or tree trunks. These surfaces will fray and wear down the string much faster than soft grass and weeds, and can even cause the string to snap mid-use.
• Keep the string at the recommended length (6-8 inches) at all times. Longer string puts extra strain on the motor and wears down faster, while shorter string reduces cutting efficiency and makes edging difficult.
• Use the correct string diameter for your model and use case. Thicker string is more durable for thick weeds but puts more load on the motor, while thinner string is easier on the motor but breaks faster in heavy vegetation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Loading Your Kobalt 80V Weed Eater

Even experienced users can make mistakes when loading their weed eater string, leading to tangles, feeding issues, and even damage to the tool. Avoid these common errors to make the reload process as smooth as possible:

• Winding the string in the wrong direction: Always follow the directional arrow printed on the spool. Winding backwards causes tangles, poor feeding, and can damage the spool.
• Overlapping the string while wrapping: Overlapping creates bulky spots that catch on the housing and cause tangles. Wrap tightly and evenly with no overlaps.
• Using string that’s too thick: Check your user manual for the maximum recommended diameter. Thick string overloads the motor, reduces battery life, and can damage the trimmer head.
• Forgetting to tuck the string end into the spool notch: Failing to tuck the loose end causes the string to come loose inside the housing, leading to tangles that require full disassembly to fix.
• Skipping battery disconnection: Always disconnect the battery before maintenance to avoid accidental startup and serious injury.

Troubleshooting String Feeding Issues After Loading

Even if you follow the steps correctly, you may run into feeding issues after reloading your Kobalt 80V weed eater. Here are common problems and their fixes:

• String won’t extend when you press the trigger: First, check for tangles inside the spool by removing it and inspecting for knots. If tangled, cut off the string and reload. If not tangled, make sure the spool is seated correctly and the cover is locked.
• String feeds too far or too little: Use the adjustable string length feature (consult your user manual for location) to set the string to the correct 6-8 inch length.
• String breaks frequently after loading: This is usually caused by string that’s too thin for your use case, or winding it too tightly. Use a slightly thicker string, wrap it looser, and avoid cutting against hard surfaces.
• String feeds unevenly on dual-line heads: Cut the longer string to match the shorter one, then confirm each string is in its own separate spool groove and not crossed during wrapping.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often do I need to reload my Kobalt 80V weed eater string?

For most residential users, you’ll need to reload every 2-4 weeks, depending on usage and weed thickness. Heavy users cutting thick overgrowth may need to reload weekly. Check string length before each use to see if a reload is needed. (See Also:How To Start A Stihl Electric Weed Eater)

What size trimmer string does my Kobalt 80V weed eater use?

Most Kobalt 80V weed eaters use either 0.080-inch or 0.095-inch diameter string, depending on the model. Check the label on the side of the trimmer head or your user manual for the exact recommended size for your specific model. Using the wrong size can cause feeding issues and excessive strain on the motor.

Can I use third-party trimmer string instead of Kobalt brand string?
