Planning Your Sprinkler Layout

Proper planning is the foundation of a successful Rain Bird installation. Rushing into digging trenches without mapping out your design leads to inefficient coverage, dead spots, and potential rework. Begin by sketching a rough layout of your yard, marking existing structures, slopes, and shaded areas.

Zone Design Principles

Divide your lawn into zones based on plant water requirements and sun exposure. Each zone should consist of plants with similar moisture needs grouped together. Rain Bird recommends limiting each zone to approximately 15 sprinkler heads to maintain consistent pressure throughout the circuit.

Consider using a grid pattern with overlapping spray patterns to ensure uniform coverage. Space pop-up spray heads about 10 to 15 feet apart, depending on the model’s throw radius. For larger areas, place impact rotors strategically to cover broad stretches efficiently.

Pressure and Flow Calculations

Check your home’s water pressure and flow rate before selecting components. Most residential systems operate between 30 and 50 PSI. If your pressure exceeds 60 PSI, install a pressure regulator to protect delicate internal mechanisms within Rain Bird valves and heads.

Use Rain Bird’s online design tools or consult manufacturer charts to calculate total gallons per minute (GPM) demand for each zone. Ensure your water supply can handle the combined load without significant drop-off in performance.

Reading Area Maps and Zones

Once you have sketched your layout, overlay it with zone boundaries. Use colored markers or digital software to distinguish between different sections of your property. Pay special attention to transitions between grass, flower beds, and hardscapes.

Identify key reference points such as driveways, sidewalks, and building foundations. These landmarks serve as anchor points during installation and help you avoid accidental damage to underground utilities.

If possible, obtain a utility locate service to mark gas, electric, cable, and sewer lines. This precaution saves time and prevents hazardous mishaps while trenching.

Installing Control Valves

Control valves regulate water flow to individual zones. Install them in a centralized valve box near your main water source for easy access and maintenance.

Valve Selection Guide

Choose valves that match your system’s voltage and amperage specifications. Rain Bird offers both manual and automatic solenoid-operated valves suitable for various applications. (See Also:How To Fix A Broken Sprinkler)

1. Shut off the main water supply and drain residual pressure.
2. Dig a shallow pit slightly larger than your valve box dimensions.
3. Place the valve assembly inside the box, ensuring all connections remain accessible.
4. Connect incoming supply line to the valve inlet using appropriate threaded adapters.
5. Attach outlet piping to the valve discharge port.
6. Seal all joints with Teflon tape or pipe dope.
7. Backfill carefully around the valve box, avoiding direct contact with moving parts.

Laying the Pipe Network

With valves secured, focus on laying the network of PVC pipes that distribute water to each sprinkler head.

Trench Depth and Slope

Excavate trenches at least six inches deep and twelve inches wide. Maintain a gentle slope away from buildings to promote drainage. Avoid placing pipes too close to tree roots, which can cause future interference.

Pipe Joint Techniques

Use solvent welding for joining PVC segments. Apply primer first to clean the surface, then coat both male and female ends with cement. Twist pieces together slightly to spread adhesive evenly, then hold until setting occurs.

Mainline vs. Lateral Lines

Establish a mainline fed directly from your valve outlet. Branch secondary laterals from this primary artery toward each sprinkler location. Keep laterals short and direct to minimize friction loss and pressure drop.

Connecting Sprinkler Heads

Select the right sprinkler heads based on your landscape type and desired spray pattern.

Head Types Explained

Rain Bird produces several categories of heads tailored to specific functions:

Installation Steps

1. Insert riser pipe into lateral line fitting.
2. Screw head onto riser, ensuring tight seal with Teflon tape.
3. Adjust height so top sits flush with ground level after backfilling.
4. Secure with stakes if necessary to prevent shifting.
5. Repeat for remaining heads in sequence.

Wiring the System

Electrical wiring connects your controller to each valve, enabling automated operation.

Wire Selection

Use 18 AWG multi-conductor thermostat wire for standard residential setups. For longer runs exceeding 100 feet, upgrade to 16 AWG to reduce resistance.

Connection Process

1. Run wires from controller to nearest valve box.
2. Strip insulation from ends and twist corresponding colored pairs together.
3. Secure connections with waterproof wire nuts.
4. Bury cables at least eight inches deep alongside pipes.
5. Label each wire at both ends for future troubleshooting.

Installing and Programming the Controller

Your Rain Bird controller manages when and how long each zone activates.

Mounting Location

Install indoors or under shelter to avoid weather damage. Mount at eye level for convenient viewing and programming access.

Initial Setup

Follow these steps to configure basic settings:

1. Plug unit into a dedicated GFCI outlet.
2. Set current date and time.
3. Select language preference and regional codes.
4. Enter number of zones connected to the system.
5. Input local sunrise/sunset times or enable GPS sync if available.

Programming Zones

Assign start times and durations for each zone based on plant type and seasonal demands. Rain Bird controllers typically allow up to four start times per day per zone, offering flexibility for morning, midday, and evening watering cycles.

Testing and Adjusting Spray Patterns

After completing physical installation, test each zone individually to identify leaks, blockages, or misaligned heads.

System Pressurization

Slowly reintroduce water pressure after confirming all connections are secure. Watch for signs of leakage at joints, fittings, or valve seats.

Sprinkler Calibration

Walk your yard while each zone operates. Check for dry patches, overspray onto pavement, or ponding in low areas. Fine-tune nozzle angles and arc adjustments accordingly. (See Also:How To Make Motion Activated Sprinkler)

Controller Verification

Run a full cycle through the controller interface to confirm proper sequencing and timing. Record baseline settings for comparison during seasonal changes.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even well-installed systems encounter occasional problems. Knowing how to diagnose symptoms quickly minimizes downtime and costly repairs.

Low Pressure Problems

Causes include clogged filters, broken pipes, or inadequate water supply. Inspect filter screens inside valves and clean debris regularly. Replace worn O-rings or washers showing signs of deterioration.

Leak Detection

Visible soggy spots often indicate hidden breaks. Use a moisture meter or probe soil around suspect areas. Repair by cutting out damaged section and splicing new pipe with couplers.
