Understanding Hunter Sprinkler Systems
Before diving into the installation process, it is crucial to understand the basic components and functionality of a Hunter sprinkler system. These systems typically consist of several key elements that work together to deliver water efficiently across your landscape. The main components include the controller (or timer), solenoid valves, sprinkler heads, risers, lateral lines, and the main supply line.
The controller serves as the brain of the system, allowing you to program watering schedules based on your lawn’s specific needs. Solenoid valves control the flow of water to different zones within your yard, ensuring that each area receives the appropriate amount of water. Sprinkler heads come in various types, including pop-up spray heads and rotary nozzles, designed to cover different areas with precision.
Hunter offers a wide range of products tailored to meet diverse irrigation requirements. Their controllers often feature advanced programming options, such as seasonal adjustments and rain sensors, which help conserve water while maintaining healthy landscaping. Understanding how these components interact is essential for proper installation and future maintenance.
Components Overview
Each component plays a vital role in the overall performance of your sprinkler system:
- Controller: Manages when and how long each zone is watered.
- Solenoid Valves: Control water flow to individual zones.
- Sprinkler Heads: Distribute water over designated areas.
- Lateral Lines: Connect sprinkler heads to the main line.
- Main Supply Line: Carries water from the source to the valves.
System Zoning
Proper zoning is critical for effective irrigation. Each zone should consist of plants with similar water requirements and sun exposure. Hunter systems allow for flexible zoning configurations, enabling you to customize watering schedules for different parts of your property. This targeted approach not only conserves water but also promotes healthier plant growth by avoiding overwatering or underwatering certain areas.
Planning Your Installation
Thorough planning is the foundation of a successful Hunter sprinkler system installation. Rushing into the project without proper preparation can lead to inefficiencies, leaks, and costly repairs down the road. Here are the key steps to consider during the planning phase:
Site Assessment
Begin by evaluating your property’s layout, soil type, slope, and existing vegetation. Walk through your yard and identify areas that require irrigation, noting any obstacles such as buildings, driveways, walkways, and trees. Take measurements of your space to determine how many zones you will need and where sprinkler heads should be placed for optimal coverage.
Consider drawing a rough sketch of your property, marking important features and potential sprinkler locations. This visual aid will prove invaluable when designing your system layout and calculating water pressure requirements.
Water Pressure and Flow Rate
Hunter sprinkler systems operate within specific pressure and flow parameters. Most residential systems function best between 30 and 50 PSI (pounds per square inch). If your home’s water pressure exceeds this range, you may need to install a pressure regulator to protect your equipment.
Similarly, the flow rate—measured in gallons per minute (GPM)—determines how many sprinkler heads can operate simultaneously in a single zone. Higher flow rates allow for more heads per zone, reducing the total number of valves required. Consult your local water utility or perform a simple bucket test to measure your available GPM.
Local Codes and Permits
Before beginning any excavation work, check with your local municipality to determine if permits are required for irrigation system installations. Some areas have strict regulations regarding water usage, backflow prevention, and landscape irrigation standards. Obtaining necessary permits ahead of time prevents delays and ensures compliance with local codes.
Tools and Materials Needed
Gathering all necessary tools and materials before starting the installation saves time and reduces frustration. Here is a comprehensive checklist to ensure you are fully prepared:

Site Preparation
With your plan in place and materials gathered, it is time to prepare the site for installation. Proper site preparation minimizes damage to existing structures and landscapes while ensuring safe working conditions.
Marking Utilities
Call 811 or your local utility marking service at least 48 hours prior to digging. Trained professionals will mark underground utilities such as gas lines, electrical conduits, and water mains. Never assume utility locations based on previous experience or visible markers alone.
Designing the Layout
Using your property sketch and measurement data, finalize the placement of each sprinkler head and zone boundary. Hunter provides online design tools and software that can assist in creating precise layouts based on your specific dimensions and plant types. These resources help optimize head spacing, minimize overspray, and maximize coverage uniformity.
Once satisfied with the design, mark the proposed trench routes and head positions using spray paint or flags. This step ensures accurate digging and helps maintain alignment during installation.
Installing the Main Line
The main line serves as the primary artery of your Hunter sprinkler system, delivering water from the source to the various zones. Installing this component correctly is crucial for system integrity and performance. (See Also:How To Program My Hunter Sprinkler System)
Trenching for Main Line
Excavate a trench deep enough to accommodate the main line pipe plus adequate drainage clearance. Generally, burying pipes 6 to 8 inches below grade is sufficient for most residential applications. However, in freezing climates, deeper burial may be necessary to prevent freezing damage.
Use a trenching shovel for smaller jobs or rent a mini-excavator for larger properties. Always slope the trench slightly away from structures to promote proper drainage.
Connecting Main Line Pipes
Cut polyethylene or PVC pipes to length using a pipe cutter or hacksaw. Join sections using appropriate fittings and solvent welding (for PVC) or compression fittings (for polyethylene). Ensure all connections are secure and leak-free before proceeding.
Install a backflow preventer and pressure vacuum breaker near the water source connection point. These devices protect your household water supply from contamination and regulate system pressure.
Connecting to Water Supply
Linking your Hunter sprinkler system to your home’s water supply requires careful attention to detail. Incorrect connections can result in leaks, reduced pressure, or cross-contamination risks.
Shut-Off Valve Installation
Locate your main water supply valve and install a dedicated shut-off valve specifically for your irrigation system. This isolation valve allows independent control of water flow to the sprinklers without affecting domestic plumbing.
Choose a ball valve or gate valve rated for potable water use. Install it upstream of the backflow preventer to facilitate easy maintenance and emergency shut-offs.
Threading and Connections
Connect the main line to the shut-off valve using appropriate threaded adapters or slip joints. Wrap male threads with Teflon tape to ensure watertight seals. Tighten all connections securely but avoid over-tightening, which can strip threads or crack fittings.
After making connections, slowly open the main water supply and inspect for leaks. Address any dripping immediately before continuing with the installation.
Laying Lateral Lines
Lateral lines branch off from the main line and deliver water directly to individual sprinkler heads. Proper installation of these smaller-diameter pipes is essential for even water distribution and system efficiency.
Zone Separation
Group sprinkler heads into zones according to their water requirements and hydraulic capacity. Each zone connects to its own solenoid valve, allowing independent operation. Plan lateral line runs to minimize pipe length while maintaining adequate spacing between heads.
Pipe Routing
Bury lateral lines at the same depth as the main line, typically 6 to 8 inches below grade. Route pipes along predetermined trench paths, securing them with plastic stakes every few feet to prevent movement.
When connecting lateral lines to the main line, use saddle clamps or tee-fittings to create branch connections. Ensure all joints are properly sealed and aligned to prevent future leaks or blockages.
Installing Sprinkler Heads
Sprinkler heads are the visible components responsible for distributing water across your landscape. Correct installation ensures optimal spray patterns, prevents clogging, and extends equipment lifespan.
Head Selection
Hunter manufactures various sprinkler head models suited for different applications:
| Head Type | Best For | Coverage Range |
|---|---|---|
| Spray Heads | Small to medium lawns | 6 to 15 feet radius |
| Rotary Nozzles | Large open areas | 15 to 30 feet radius |
| Bubblers | Garden beds and shrubs | 1 to 3 foot radius |
| Low Angle Sprays | Sloped terrain | 6 to 12 feet radius |
Select heads based on your landscape characteristics, desired coverage area, and water pressure conditions.
Installation Process
Position each sprinkler head at the marked location, ensuring it sits flush with the surrounding grade. Attach the head to the lateral line using a threaded riser or barbed fitting, depending on the model specifications.
For pop-up spray heads, connect the riser to the supply pipe and adjust the spray pattern by rotating the nozzle. For rotary nozzles, follow manufacturer guidelines for arc adjustment and radius settings.
Backfill around the base of each head carefully, avoiding soil compaction that could impede water flow or cause misalignment. (See Also:How To Cap A Broken Sprinkler Line)
