Why Greasing Your Stihl Weed Eater Matters

The drive shaft and gear drive assembly are two of the highest-friction components on your Stihl weed eater. Every time you operate the tool, the shaft rotates at speeds of up to 10,000 RPM to transfer power from the engine to the cutting head, while the gear assembly adjusts the shaft length and transfers torque to the trimmer head. Without proper lubrication, these metal-on-metal components create excessive friction, leading to overheating, accelerated wear, and eventual failure. Stihl designs their weed eaters to last for years of regular use, but the shaft and gears are the most stressed parts of the tool, making regular greasing a non-negotiable part of ownership.

Regular greasing creates a protective barrier between moving metal parts, reducing friction by up to 80% and preventing metal shavings from forming as parts wear. It also seals out moisture, dirt, and debris that can corrode bearings and damage gear teeth over time. For most residential users who operate their weed eater for 1-2 hours per week, a single $10 tube of grease can save hundreds of dollars in repair costs for a seized shaft or broken gear assembly, which are two of the most common expensive failures for Stihl weed eaters. Commercial users who operate their tools for 4+ hours per day will see even greater returns, as regular greasing can prevent downtime that costs hundreds in lost productivity. Neglecting this simple maintenance task can also reduce your tool’s cutting performance, as a worn shaft or gear assembly will transfer less power to the cutting head, leaving you struggling to cut through thick weeds, brush, and overgrown grass.

Types of Grease for Stihl Weed Eaters

Not all greases are created equal for outdoor power equipment, and using the wrong type can actually cause more harm than good. The right grease for your Stihl weed eater will be thick, water-resistant, and able to withstand the high temperatures generated by the gear assembly during extended use. Greases are rated on the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI) scale, with Grade 2 being the standard for outdoor power equipment: it is thick enough to stay in place on vertical and horizontal components, but not so thick that it cannot work its way into small bearing races. Avoid greases rated Grade 3 or higher, as they are too stiff to lubricate small components properly.

Stihl Branded Greases

Stihl produces two primary greases designed specifically for their outdoor power equipment: Stihl Multigrease and Stihl Marine Grease. Both are formulated to adhere to metal surfaces, resist washing out in rain, and perform across a wide temperature range from -20°F to 300°F, making them ideal for almost all use cases, from cold winter trimming to hot summer mowing. Stihl greases are also approved for use on tools still under the manufacturer’s warranty, so you will not risk voiding coverage by using them.

Generic Lithium Greases

For users on a budget, or those who no longer have an active warranty on their tool, a high-quality NLGI Grade 2 lithium-based grease is a suitable alternative. These greases are widely available at auto parts stores, hardware stores, and big-box retailers for a fraction of the cost of Stihl branded grease, and offer adequate lubrication for light to moderate residential use. Avoid thin, spray-on greases or silicone-based greases, as these will break down quickly when exposed to heat and moisture, leaving your components unprotected after just a few hours of use.

Greases to Avoid

Never use WD-40, penetrating oils, or thin automotive greases on your Stihl weed eater’s shaft or gear assembly. These products are designed to loosen stuck parts, not provide long-term lubrication, and will evaporate or wash away within hours of use. White lithium grease can be used in a pinch for light, dry-climate use, but it is not water-resistant and will break down quickly in wet or dusty conditions, so it is not recommended for regular use.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Gathering all the necessary tools before you start will make the greasing process quick and mess-free. You will need the following items, most of which you likely already have around the house: (See Also:How To Respool A Stihl Weed Eater 2)

• Stihl approved or NLGI Grade 2 lithium-based grease: A 3-ounce tube is sufficient for most users, and will last for 5-10 maintenance cycles depending on how often you use your tool. Keep a spare tube in your garage or tool bag so you always have it on hand when you need it.
• Grease gun or Stihl grease applicator: Most Stihl weed eaters use a standard 1/8″ NPT grease zerk fitting that is compatible with most small, pistol-grip grease guns. Many Stihl models even come with a small, pre-filled grease applicator tube that fits the zerk directly, so you may not need to purchase a separate gun for occasional use. If you do not have a grease gun, you can use a small craft stick or butter knife to apply grease directly to the gear teeth, but a gun is required for greasing the shaft zerk.
• Clean, lint-free rags: You will need at least two: one to clean the grease zerk and components before greasing, and one to wipe away excess grease afterward. Old t-shirts or shop rags work perfectly for this task.
• Flathead and Phillips screwdrivers: To remove the gear housing cover, which is held in place with screws of varying types depending on your Stihl model. Most models use Phillips screws, but some older models use flathead screws.
• Putty knife or old credit card: To scrape out old, hardened grease from the gear housing. A credit card works well for getting into tight corners without scratching the plastic housing.
• Work gloves and safety glasses: To protect your hands from sharp edges on the gear housing and your eyes from flying debris when cleaning components.

Preparing Your Stihl Weed Eater for Greasing

Proper preparation is critical to both a successful greasing job and your personal safety. Follow these three steps before you start applying grease to avoid injury or damage to your tool:

1. Disconnect the spark plug: Locate the spark plug wire on the side of the engine, and pull it straight off the plug. This prevents the weed eater from accidentally starting while you are working on it, which could cause serious lacerations or amputations from the spinning cutting head. Tuck the wire away from the plug so it does not accidentally reattach during the process.
2. Clean the work area: Use a dry rag to wipe away all dirt, grass clippings, and debris from the drive shaft, gear housing, and grease zerk. If your model has a flexible shaft, extend it fully to make sure you can reach all parts of the shaft for cleaning. Any dirt left on these components will be pushed into the bearings when you apply grease, causing premature wear and damage. If there is thick, caked-on old grease, use a putty knife to gently scrape it away before wiping the surface clean.
3. Inspect for existing damage: Before greasing, check the shaft for cracks, bends, or worn seals, and inspect the gear housing for cracks or leaks. If you notice any damage, replace the affected parts before greasing, as grease will not fix existing mechanical issues. Also check the grease zerk to make sure it is not clogged; if it is, use a small pin to clear the opening before proceeding. If you see grease leaking from the shaft seals or gear housing gasket, replace the seals before greasing, as leaking seals will let grease escape and let dirt and moisture in.

Step-by-Step: How to Grease a Stihl Weed Eater Shaft

The drive shaft is the component that transfers power from the engine to the cutting head, and it relies on a constant supply of grease to reduce friction and prevent seizing. Most Stihl weed eaters have one grease zerk located at the base of the shaft where it connects to the gear housing, while some extended-length models have a second zerk at the top of the shaft near the cutting head. Follow these steps to grease the shaft properly, and you will ensure smooth, quiet operation for years to come:

1. Locate and clean the grease zerk: Find the small, round grease fitting on the side of the shaft, usually about 1-2 inches from the gear housing. Wipe it thoroughly with a clean rag to remove any dirt or debris, so you do not push contaminants into the bearing when attaching the grease gun. If the zerk is corroded, use a small wire brush to clean it before wiping.
2. Attach the grease applicator: If you are using a pre-filled Stihl grease tube, simply push it straight onto the zerk until it clicks into place. If you are using a standard grease gun, attach the correct 1/8″ NPT coupler and push it firmly onto the zerk to create a tight seal. If the coupler is loose, grease will spray out around the fitting instead of going into the bearing.
3. Pump grease slowly into the zerk: Squeeze the trigger of the grease gun slowly, applying 2-3 pumps of grease for residential models, or 4-5 pumps for commercial-grade models with longer shafts. You will feel slight resistance as the grease fills the bearing race; do not force the gun, as this can damage the seal. If you see old, dirty grease oozing out of the opposite end of the shaft, that is a sign the old grease is being pushed out, and you should keep pumping until fresh, clean grease comes out.
4. Remove the grease gun and wipe away excess: Pull the applicator straight off the zerk to avoid damaging the fitting. Use a clean rag to wipe away any grease that oozed out of the zerk or the end of the shaft, as excess grease will attract dirt and debris during use.
5. Reattach the spark plug wire: Once you have finished greasing the shaft, push the spark plug wire back firmly onto the plug to restore power to the tool.

Step-by-Step: Greasing the Gear Drive Assembly

The gear drive assembly is responsible for adjusting the length of the shaft and transferring torque from the engine to the cutting head. It requires a thicker layer of grease than the shaft to protect the gear teeth from wear, corrosion, and damage from debris. Follow these steps to grease the gear drive properly:

1. Remove the gear housing cover: Locate the 3-4 screws holding the plastic gear housing cover in place (usually on the side of the housing near the shaft). Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove the screws, and set them aside in a small cup or magnetic tray so you do not lose them. Note the position of each screw, as some models have different screw lengths for different holes to avoid cracking the housing when reassembling.
2. Remove old grease and debris: Use a putty knife to scrape out all old, hardened grease from the inside of the housing. Wipe the gear teeth, housing walls, and bearing surfaces with a clean rag to remove all remaining debris. If there is stubborn buildup, you can use a small amount of citrus-based degreaser, but be sure to wipe the surface completely dry before applying new grease, as moisture will cause the new grease to break down faster. While the housing is open, inspect the gear teeth for chips, cracks, or excessive wear; if you notice any damage, replace the gear assembly before proceeding.
3. Apply new grease to the gear teeth: Use your finger or a small putty knife to apply a thin, even layer of grease to all the gear teeth, making sure to cover the contact surfaces where the gears mesh together. Also apply a small amount of grease to the bearing surfaces where the shaft rotates inside the housing. Avoid overapplying, as excess grease will fling off during operation and attract dirt, creating a gritty paste that increases friction over time.
4. Reattach the gear housing cover: Place the cover back on the housing, and insert the screws by hand first to avoid cross-threading. Tighten the screws in a cross pattern (tighten one screw a quarter turn, then move to the opposite screw, and so on) to ensure even pressure on the cover. Do not overtighten the screws, as this can crack the plastic housing and cause leaks.
5. Wipe away excess grease and test the tool: Wipe any excess grease from the outside of the housing with a clean rag. Reconnect the spark plug wire, start the weed eater, and let it run for 30 seconds to make sure there are no unusual noises or vibrations. If you hear grinding or squeaking, turn the tool off immediately and check that the gear cover is seated correctly and the gears are properly lubricated.

Signs Your Stihl Weed Eater Needs Immediate Greasing

Even if you follow a regular greasing schedule, there are several warning signs that your Stihl weed eater needs immediate lubrication. Ignoring these signs can lead to permanent damage to the shaft or gear assembly, which can cost $50-$150 to replace, so address them as soon as you notice them:

• Squeaking or grinding noises: If you hear a high-pitched squeak or low grinding sound when operating the weed eater, especially when adjusting the shaft length, that is a clear sign the bearings or gears are not properly lubricated. The noise will get louder over time if you do not address it, eventually leading to seizing.
• Excessive vibration: A properly lubricated shaft and gear assembly will run smoothly with minimal vibration. If you notice increased vibration in the handle or cutting head, it may be caused by dry, worn bearings that need greasing, or by damaged gear teeth that need replacement.
• Difficulty adjusting the shaft: If the shaft sticks or is hard to extend and retract, the gear assembly is likely dry and needs to be greased immediately to prevent seizing. A seized shaft will make the tool unusable until you replace the entire gear assembly.
• Visible dry or cracked old grease: If you see old grease that is dry, cracked, or missing from the shaft or gear housing, that means the lubrication has broken down and needs to be replaced. Dry grease offers no protection against friction or corrosion.
• Overheating gear housing: After 10-15 minutes of use, the gear housing should be warm to the touch, but not hot enough that you cannot hold your hand on it. If the housing is excessively hot, the gears are likely dry and need immediate greasing to prevent damage to the gear teeth and bearings.
• Grease leaks: If you see grease leaking from the shaft seals or gear housing gasket, that is a sign the seals are worn and need to be replaced. Leaking seals will let grease escape, leaving the components dry, and let dirt and moisture in, causing corrosion.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Greasing

Even experienced users make mistakes when greasing their Stihl weed eater, which can lead to reduced performance or permanent damage. Avoid these common errors to get the most out of your maintenance routine:

1. Using the wrong type of grease: As mentioned earlier, never use WD-40, penetrating oils, or thin spray greases on your Stihl weed eater. These products do not provide long-term lubrication and will wash away quickly, leaving your components unprotected. Stick to Stihl branded greases or NLGI Grade 2 lithium-based grease for best results.
2. Overgreasing components: More grease is not better. Overgreasing the shaft can force old grease and dirt into the bearings, while overgreasing the gear assembly will cause excess grease to fling off during operation, attracting dirt and increasing friction. Stick to the recommended 2-5 pump count for the shaft and a thin, even layer for the gears.
3. Skipping the cleaning step: Applying new grease over old, dirty grease or caked-on debris will push contaminants into the bearings and gear teeth, causing accelerated wear. Always clean components thoroughly before greasing, even if they look clean to the naked eye.
4. Forgetting to disconnect the spark plug: This is the most dangerous mistake you can make. An accidental startup while working on the tool can cause severe lacerations or amputations from the spinning cutting head. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before starting any maintenance, even if you think the tool is off.
5. Reusing old, contaminated grease: Never scoop old grease out of the gear housing and reuse it, as it will be full of metal shavings and debris that will damage components. Always use fresh, clean grease for every maintenance cycle.
6. Greasing a hot tool: If you just finished using your weed eater, let it cool for at least 15 minutes before greasing. Hot grease will thin out and run off the components before it can lubricate them properly, and you risk burning yourself on hot metal parts.

Tips for Long-Term Shaft and Gear Maintenance

Greasing is just one part of keeping your Stihl weed eater’s shaft and gear assembly in good shape. Follow these best practices to extend the life of these components even further:

• Follow a regular greasing schedule: For most residential users, grease the drive shaft every 25 hours of operation, or at the start of each mowing season. Grease the gear drive assembly every 50 hours of use, or once per year for light, occasional use. If you use your weed eater for commercial landscaping, or in dusty, high-moisture environments, cut these intervals in half to prevent premature wear.
• Store your tool in a dry, covered area: Moisture is the enemy of grease, as it can dilute the lubricant and cause corrosion on metal components. Always store your weed eater in a shed, garage, or covered area when not in use, and avoid leaving it out in the rain or snow. If you store your tool for more than 3 months over the winter, grease the shaft and gear assembly before storage to prevent corrosion during the off-season.
• Keep a maintenance kit on hand: Keep a small tube of grease, rags, and screwdrivers in your tool bag or garage so you always have what you need to perform maintenance when the time comes. This makes it easy to stick to your greasing schedule without having to run to the store for supplies.
• Inspect components regularly: Every time you clean your weed eater, take a few minutes to inspect the shaft for cracks, bends, or worn seals, and check the gear housing for leaks or cracks. Catching small issues early can prevent them from turning into expensive repairs that cost more than the tool itself.
• Wipe off excess grease after each use: Excess grease that flings off during operation will attract dirt and debris, which can build up on the shaft and gear components and create a gritty paste that increases friction. Wipe the shaft and housing with a clean rag after each use to keep them clean.
• Use only Stihl approved parts and greases if your tool is under warranty: Using non-approved greases or aftermarket parts can void your warranty, leaving you on the hook for repair costs. Always refer to your owner’s manual for specific maintenance guidelines for your model, as some newer models may have specific grease requirements.

The gear drive assembly requires greasing every 50 hours of use, or once annually for light, occasional use. If you use your weed eater for commercial landscaping, or in high-moisture, dusty environments, cut these intervals in half to prevent premature wear of bearings and gears.

Can I use WD-40 instead of grease on my Stihl weed eater?

No, WD-40 is a water-displacing solvent and light lubricant, not a heavy-duty grease. It will evaporate quickly, leaving your shaft and gear components unprotected, and can even wash away existing grease. Always use a thick, water-resistant grease specifically designed for outdoor power equipment to ensure proper lubrication and long-term protection.

What happens if I overgrease my Stihl weed eater?

Overgreasing causes excess grease to fling off the shaft and gear components during operation, creating a messy buildup that attracts dirt, dust, and debris. This buildup actually increases friction over time, leading to faster wear of bearings and gears. It can also cause grease to leak into the engine or electrical components, leading to performance issues or permanent damage.

Do I need a special grease gun for my Stihl weed eater?

Most Stihl weed eaters use a standard 1/8″ NPT grease zerk fitting that is compatible with most small, pistol-grip grease guns. Many Stihl models even come with a small, pre-filled grease applicator tube that fits the zerk directly, so you do not need to purchase a separate gun for occasional use. For commercial users who grease multiple tools, a standard 1/8″ NPT grease gun works perfectly for all Stihl models. (See Also:What Fuel Ratio For Echo Weed Eater)
