How Echo Bump Feed Heads Work

Before diving into repair steps, it’s helpful to understand how your Echo bump feed head operates. Unlike automatic feed heads that advance line automatically when the trimmer is used, bump feed heads only advance cutting line when you intentionally tap the bottom of the head on the ground. This design gives you precise control over line length, reduces unnecessary line waste, and is less prone to mechanical failure than automatic feed systems. The bump action triggers a gear mechanism inside the head that rotates the line spool, feeding out a fresh, sharp edge each time you tap.

Core Components of a Bump Feed Head

Your Echo bump feed head has a small number of simple, durable components that work together to feed line. Understanding each part will help you diagnose issues quickly during repair:

• Spool: The plastic or metal cylinder that holds the cutting line. It has gear teeth on one end that engage with the head’s internal gear mechanism when you bump the head.
• Line Outlet: The small hole on the side of the head through which the cutting line feeds out. It has sharp edges to cut excess line to the correct length as it advances.
• Bump Knob: The rounded plastic cap on the bottom of the head that you tap on the ground to advance the line. It connects to the internal gear mechanism to trigger line feed.
• Spring: A small metal coil that sits between the spool and the head housing, providing tension to return the spool to its original position after bumping.
• Gear Mechanism: A set of small plastic or metal gears inside the head housing that transfer the bump motion from the knob to the spool, rotating it to advance the line.
• Housing: The outer plastic shell that holds all internal components together and mounts to the trimmer shaft.

Common Issues That Require Bump Feed Head Repair

Most bump feed head problems are minor and can be fixed in 15-30 minutes with basic tools. The most common issues that signal you need to repair your Echo bump feed head include:

• Line does not advance when you tap the bump knob on the ground
• The head jams or sticks during use, causing the trimmer to stall
• Line breaks frequently, even with correct installation
• Line spools out unevenly, leaving one side longer than the other
• The bump knob is stuck or won’t turn
• The head feels loose or wobbles during operation
• Grass and debris build up inside the head, causing clogs

Identifying your specific issue first will help you avoid unnecessary part replacements and speed up the repair process.

Tools and Supplies You’ll Need for Repair

Most Echo bump feed head repairs require only basic tools and inexpensive replacement parts. Gather these supplies before starting work to avoid interruptions:

• Work gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes from sharp line and debris
• Phillips head screwdriver (most Echo heads use #2 Phillips screws)
• Flathead screwdriver for prying off stuck bump knobs or clearing debris
• Replacement cutting line in the correct diameter for your Echo model (common sizes are 0.080″ and 0.095″; check your manual or the old line for sizing)
• Replacement bump knob, spring, or spool if your existing parts are worn or broken
• Clean dry rag for wiping debris
• Compressed air (optional) for blowing out hard-to-reach clogs
• Silicone-based lubricant for greasing gear teeth (avoid petroleum-based products, which degrade plastic)
• Small magnetic parts tray to keep screws and small components from getting lost

If you’re replacing the entire head assembly, you may also need a torque wrench to tighten mounting screws to Echo’s specified torque setting, which prevents overtightening and damage to the trimmer shaft. For most repairs, however, the basic tools listed above are all you need.

Step-by-Step Guide to Fixing an Echo Bump Feed Head

These steps work for nearly all Echo bump feed head models, including the popular SRM series. Always refer to your trimmer’s user manual for model-specific instructions if you’re unsure about any step.

Step 1: Disconnect Power and Remove the Head

Safety is the first priority when working with any power equipment. Start by disconnecting power to the trimmer to avoid accidental startup:

1. For gas-powered Echo trimmers, turn off the fuel valve to prevent fuel leaks, then disconnect the spark plug wire from the spark plug to disable the ignition system. Make sure the engine is completely cool before starting work to avoid burns from hot components.
2. For electric Echo trimmers, unplug the tool from the wall outlet, or remove the battery pack if you have a cordless model.
3. If your trimmer has a debris shield attached to the head, remove it first by unscrewing the mounting bolts with your Phillips screwdriver.
4. Hold the head steady with one hand, then turn the bump knob counterclockwise to remove it from the bottom of the head.
5. Use the Phillips screwdriver to remove the 2-4 screws that secure the head to the trimmer shaft. Keep the screws in your magnetic parts tray to avoid losing them.
6. Pull the head straight off the trimmer shaft gently. Do not force it, as this can damage the drive coupling on the shaft or the mounting tabs on the head.

Step 2: Diagnose the Specific Problem

Before replacing any parts, inspect the head to identify the root cause of the issue. Take a photo of the fully assembled head before disassembling it, so you have a reference for how all components fit together during reassembly. Check for the following common problems: (See Also:How Loud Is A Weed Eater)

• Clogs of grass, dirt, or old line clippings in the spool cavity or line outlet
• Cracks or breaks in the spool, housing, or bump knob
• A broken or dislodged spring
• Worn or stripped gear teeth on the spool or internal gear mechanism
• Frayed, kinked, or incorrectly installed cutting line

Most bump feed issues fall into three categories: clogged debris, worn parts, or incorrect line installation. This step will help you target only the parts that need repair or replacement, saving you time and money.

Step 3: Clear Clogs and Debris

Clogs are the #1 cause of bump feed head failure, so this step will fix most minor issues without the need for part replacement:

1. Use a dry rag to wipe out all loose grass, dirt, and debris from the head housing and spool cavity.
2. Use compressed air to blow out hard-to-reach clogs in the gear mechanism and line outlet. Hold the nozzle a few inches away from the components to avoid damaging plastic parts with high pressure.
3. Inspect the line outlet hole for blockages. Use a small flathead screwdriver or toothpick to gently clear any stuck grass, sap, or old line pieces. Do not enlarge the outlet hole, as this will cause line to spool out unevenly.
4. If there is sticky sap or residue on the housing, use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a rag to dissolve it, then wipe the area dry. Avoid using harsh chemical cleaners, as they can degrade plastic components over time.

Step 4: Replace Worn or Broken Parts

If clearing clogs does not fix the issue, replace any damaged or worn components:

1. If the spool is cracked, warped, or has stripped gear teeth, replace it with a compatible replacement. For most Echo SRM series trimmers, the standard replacement spool part number is P021001230, but always confirm the correct part for your specific model number before purchasing.
2. If the spring is broken, stretched, or dislodged, replace it with a new spring of the same size and tension. A misshapen spring will not provide enough force to advance the line when you bump the head.
3. If the bump knob is stripped or cracked, replace it with a new OEM or aftermarket knob. Make sure the new knob has the same thread pattern as your original to avoid installation issues.
4. If the cutting line is frayed, kinked, or too short, replace it with the correct diameter line for your model. Wind the new line onto the spool in the direction indicated by the arrow printed on the spool (almost always clockwise), leaving 6-8 inches of line sticking out of the outlet. Do not overfill the spool, as excess line will cause jams and put extra strain on the gear mechanism.

Step 5: Reassemble and Test the Head

Once you’ve cleared clogs and replaced any damaged parts, reassemble the head and test it to confirm the repair is successful:

1. Place the spring into the center groove of the head housing, then set the spool on top of the spring, making sure the gear teeth on the spool align with the internal gear mechanism.
2. Align the head with the trimmer shaft, making sure the mounting tabs on the head fit into the slots on the shaft coupling.
3. Insert the mounting screws and tighten them evenly in a criss-cross pattern. Do not overtighten, as this can crack the plastic housing and cause misalignment.
4. Screw the bump knob back onto the bottom of the head clockwise until it is snug. Do not force it, as this can break the internal thread.
5. Reconnect the spark plug wire, battery, or power cord to the trimmer.
6. Test the head by tapping the bump knob on a hard surface 5-10 times. Confirm that line advances smoothly each time, and that the head spins freely without wobbling or unusual noises. If the head does not work as expected, return to Step 2 to recheck for missed issues or incorrectly installed parts.

How to Fix Specific Common Echo Bump Feed Problems

If you know the exact issue you’re dealing with, you can skip the general steps above and follow these targeted repair instructions for the most common Echo bump feed problems.

Fixing a Head That Won’t Advance Line

A head that won’t advance line is almost always caused by one of four issues: a clogged line outlet, a broken or dislodged spring, incorrectly installed line, or worn gear teeth. To fix this problem:

1. First, clear the line outlet of any debris as outlined in Step 3.
2. Remove the spool and check that the line is wound in the correct direction (matching the arrow on the spool). If it is wound backward, rewind it correctly.
3. Inspect the spring to make sure it is not broken or dislodged from its groove. If the spring is dislodged but intact, reseat it by compressing it slightly and aligning it with the groove in the housing. If it is broken, replace it with a new compatible spring.
4. Check the gear teeth on the spool and internal gear mechanism for wear or stripping. If the gears are stripped, replace the spool or the entire head assembly, as damaged gears will not transfer the bump motion to rotate the spool.

Fixing a Head That Jams or Sticks

A jammed head is usually caused by an overfilled spool, tangled line, debris in the gear mechanism, or a damaged housing. To fix this issue:

1. Remove the spool and cut off all old line. Discard any tangled or kinked line.
2. Wipe out the spool cavity and gear mechanism to remove all grass, dirt, and debris.
3. Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the gear teeth to reduce friction and prevent sticking.
4. Rewind the line onto the spool evenly, leaving 6-8 inches sticking out of the outlet. Do not overfill the spool, as excess line will cause tangles and jams.
5. If the housing is cracked or warped, replace it entirely, as a damaged housing will cause misalignment that leads to repeated jams.

Fixing a Head That Spits Out Line Unevenly

Uneven line spooling is caused by uneven line winding, a damaged spool, or a misaligned line outlet. To fix this problem: (See Also:How To String My Craftsman Weed Eater)

1. Remove the spool and unwind all existing line. Rewind the new line evenly, making sure each layer is tight and aligned with the spool’s edges. Loose or uneven winding will cause the line to spool out at different lengths on each side.
2. Inspect the spool for bends, cracks, or warping. A damaged spool will not rotate evenly, causing uneven line feed. Replace the spool if it is damaged.
3. Check that the line outlet is not blocked or misaligned. Clear any debris from the outlet, and make sure it is centered so line feeds out evenly on both sides of the head.
4. If the problem persists after these steps, the trimmer shaft may be bent, which causes the head to rotate unevenly. A bent shaft will need to be replaced by a professional or with a new shaft assembly.

Comparison of OEM vs. Aftermarket Replacement Parts

When replacing parts for your Echo bump feed head, you can choose between original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts made by Echo, or less expensive aftermarket parts made by third-party brands. Both options work well for most users, but there are key differences to consider:

For casual homeowners who use their trimmer a few times a month, aftermarket parts are a cost-effective choice. For professional landscapers or heavy users who rely on their trimmer daily, OEM parts offer better long-term durability and reliability.

Tips and Best Practices for Extending Bump Feed Head Life

Regular maintenance and proper use will extend the lifespan of your Echo bump feed head by years, reducing the need for frequent repairs. Follow these best practices to keep your head in top condition:

• Always use the correct line diameter for your Echo model, as thicker or thinner line causes extra strain on the gear mechanism and spool.
• Never overfill the spool, as excess line causes jams, tangles, and premature wear on the gear teeth.
• Clean the head after every 2-3 hours of use, or immediately after trimming in wet, muddy, or sticky conditions, to remove grass, dirt, and sap that can cause clogs and corrosion.
• Store the trimmer in a dry, sheltered location to prevent rust on metal components and degradation of plastic parts from UV exposure.
• Do not force the bump knob if it is stuck, as this can break the internal spring or gear teeth. Instead, clear any debris from the knob’s threads and apply a small amount of silicone lubricant to loosen it.
• Inspect the head every 10-15 hours of use for signs of wear, and replace worn parts before they fail completely and cause more extensive damage.
• Apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to the gear teeth every 3-6 months to reduce friction and prevent sticking.

Common Mistakes to Avoid During Repair

Avoid these common errors during bump feed head repair to prevent additional damage to your trimmer and ensure a successful fix:

• Skipping power disconnection: Failing to disconnect the spark plug wire, battery, or power cord can lead to accidental startup during repair, causing serious injury. Always disable power before starting work.
• Using water to clean the head: Water causes rust on metal components and degrades plastic parts over time. Use only dry rags, compressed air, and isopropyl alcohol for cleaning.
• Overtightening mounting screws: Overtightening screws cracks the plastic housing and causes misalignment, leading to wobbling and premature wear. Tighten screws evenly until snug, but do not apply excessive force.
• Using petroleum-based lubricant: Petroleum products degrade plastic and rubber components in the head, causing them to become brittle and crack. Use only silicone-based lubricant designed for outdoor power equipment.
• Installing line in the wrong direction: Winding line backward on the spool will prevent the bump feed mechanism from advancing line correctly. Always wind line in the direction of the arrow printed on the spool.
• Using the wrong line diameter: Line that is too thick or too thin will cause jams, excess wear on the gear system, and poor cutting performance. Confirm the correct line size for your model before purchasing replacement line.
• Forcing stuck parts during disassembly: Forcing a stuck bump knob or spool can break plastic tabs and render the head unusable. If a part is stuck, apply a small amount of silicone lubricant and gently wiggle it to loosen it before applying force.
• Using low-quality replacement parts: Cheap, unbranded parts may crack or break under regular use, leading to more frequent repairs and higher long-term costs. Choose parts from reputable brands to ensure durability and reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I repair a cracked Echo bump feed head instead of replacing it?

Minor surface cracks on non-structural parts of the head can be repaired with a plastic epoxy designed for outdoor power equipment, but this is only a temporary fix. Cracks in the spool, gear housing, or mounting area will worsen with use, leading to complete head failure and potential damage to the trimmer shaft. For safety and long-term reliability, it’s best to replace a cracked bump feed head entirely, especially if the crack affects the line outlet or gear alignment. Attempting to use a cracked head can also lead to line getting caught in the crack, causing the head to seize and potentially damaging the trimmer’s drive shaft, which is a much more expensive repair.

How often should I clean my Echo bump feed head?

You should clean your Echo bump feed head after every 2-3 hours of use, or immediately after trimming in wet, muddy, or sticky conditions. Grass, dirt, and sap build up quickly in the spool cavity and line outlet, leading to clogs and jams if left unaddressed. A quick wipe-down with a dry rag and a blast of compressed air is enough for most cleanings; deep cleaning every 10 hours of use will extend the head’s lifespan significantly. If you regularly trim in sandy or dusty conditions, you may need to clean the head more frequently, as fine particles can work their way into the gear mechanism and cause premature wear. Why does my Echo weed eater head stop advancing line even after repair?

If you’ve completed a full bump feed head repair and line still won’t advance, the issue is likely outside the head itself. First, check that the trimmer shaft is not bent or damaged, as a misaligned shaft will prevent the head’s gear mechanism from engaging correctly. Next, inspect the drive shaft coupling at the base of the head for wear or damage, as a worn coupling will not transfer rotation to the head’s gear system. You can check the drive shaft coupling by removing the head and inspecting the splines on the shaft and the coupling for wear or rounding. If the splines are stripped, the coupling will need to be replaced to restore proper power transfer to the head. If both the shaft and coupling are in good condition, the issue may be a stripped gear in the trimmer’s lower drive assembly, which requires professional repair or replacement.

Are Echo bump feed heads compatible with other brand weed eaters?

Most Echo bump feed heads are designed exclusively for Echo trimmer shafts, and are not compatible with other brands like Stihl, Husqvarna, or Ryobi. The mounting thread pattern, shaft diameter, and drive coupling design are unique to Echo models. Using an incompatible head will result in a loose fit, misalignment, and damage to both the head and the trimmer. Some third-party universal bump feed heads claim to be compatible with multiple brands, but these often require adapters that can compromise performance and safety. For the best results, always use a head designed specifically for your Echo model’s shaft and drive system.
