Why Extend Sprinkler Heads?
Understanding the reasons behind extending your sprinkler heads is crucial for making informed decisions about your irrigation system. There are several common scenarios that necessitate extending or raising sprinkler heads:
First, plant growth often outpaces the original installation height of your sprinkler system. Trees, shrubs, and flower beds that were small when the system was installed can grow several feet tall over time, effectively blocking or redirecting water flow away from the intended areas. Extending the sprinkler head ensures that water reaches the ground level where it is needed most.
Second, new landscaping projects frequently require adjustments to existing sprinkler placement. When adding new garden beds, installing retaining walls, or creating level changes in your yard, your original sprinkler heads may no longer be positioned optimally. Extensions allow you to redirect water flow to match your updated landscape design.
Third, soil settling can cause sprinkler heads to sink below ground level over time. This is particularly common in areas with clay soils or regions that experience significant freeze-thaw cycles. When heads become recessed, they lose effectiveness and may even become damaged by lawn mowers or foot traffic.
Fourth, seasonal changes in vegetation or temporary plantings may require temporary adjustments to your sprinkler system. For example, annual flower displays or vegetable gardens might need different watering patterns than your permanent landscaping.
Finally, some homeowners simply want to improve their system’s overall coverage and efficiency. By raising sprinkler heads to optimal heights, you can reduce water waste, prevent runoff, and ensure that every part of your lawn receives adequate moisture.
Types of Sprinkler Systems
Before attempting to extend your sprinkler head, it is essential to identify which type of irrigation system you have. Different systems require different extension approaches and may use varying components.
Pop-up sprinklers are the most common type found in residential lawns. These heads remain hidden underground when not in use and rise up through a riser mechanism when water pressure activates them. Pop-up sprinklers typically extend 6 to 12 inches above ground level when activated and are ideal for areas where you want to avoid tripping hazards or visual clutter.
Shrub sprinklers are mounted on above-ground risers and are commonly used in flower beds, around trees, or in areas with dense plantings. These sprinklers are usually taller and more visible than pop-up models, but they offer greater flexibility in positioning and adjustment. Shrub sprinklers often require different extension techniques than their pop-up counterparts.
Rotary sprinklers use a rotating mechanism to distribute water in a circular pattern. They are typically used for larger areas and can cover distances of 20 to 50 feet depending on the model. Rotary sprinklers may require specialized extension components due to their size and water delivery mechanism.
Micro-spray sprinklers deliver water in a fine mist and are designed for delicate plants, seedlings, or areas that require gentle watering. These systems operate at lower pressures and may need specific extension fittings to maintain proper water distribution.
Drip irrigation systems use a network of tubing and emitters to deliver water directly to plant roots. While technically part of the broader sprinkler category, drip systems require entirely different extension approaches and are not typically extended using the methods described in this guide.
Understanding your system type will help you choose the appropriate extension method and components for your specific situation.
Tools and Materials Needed
Having the right tools and materials on hand before you begin will make the extension process much smoother and more efficient. Here is a comprehensive list of what you will need:
Basic tools:
- Garden trowel or small shovel for digging around the sprinkler head
- Adjustable wrench or channel-lock pliers for gripping and turning fittings
- Phillips head and flathead screwdrivers for removing existing components
- Teflon tape or pipe thread sealant for creating watertight connections
- Garden hose for testing water flow and pressure
- Level to ensure proper alignment of extended components
- Gloves to protect your hands from dirt and sharp edges
Extension materials:
- Sprinkler riser extensions (available in various lengths, typically 2 to 12 inches)
- Threaded adapters if your system requires connecting different thread types
- New sprinkler head if replacement is needed along with extension
- Flexible riser tubing for custom height adjustments
- Pressure-compensating devices if your system operates at high pressure
Additional supplies:
- Silicone-based lubricant for easier assembly of threaded components
- Plumber’s grease for sealing connections
- Zip ties or garden staples for securing loose components
- Replacement washers and O-rings in case existing ones are damaged
Most of these items can be found at hardware stores, home improvement centers, or irrigation supply retailers. It is advisable to purchase a few extra components, particularly washers and O-rings, as they are inexpensive and having spares can prevent delays if something gets damaged during installation.
Identifying Your Sprinkler Type
Proper identification of your sprinkler type is critical for choosing the correct extension method and components. Here are the key characteristics to look for when examining your existing system:
Thread configuration:
Most residential sprinkler systems use either male or female threaded connections. Male threads protrude outward from the riser pipe, while female threads accept a male connector. Some systems use compression fittings that do not require threading. Carefully examine the connection point where the sprinkler head attaches to the riser pipe to determine the thread type.
Brand and model:
Look for manufacturer names and model numbers on the sprinkler head itself. Common brands include Rain Bird, Hunter, Toro, and Nelson. The model number can help you identify the exact specifications and compatible extension components.
Riser pipe diameter:
Measure the outer diameter of the riser pipe that extends from the ground. Standard sizes include 3/4 inch, 1 inch, and 1 1/4 inch. The diameter determines which extension components will fit properly.
Activation mechanism:
Pop-up sprinklers have a visible spring-loaded mechanism that allows the head to rise when water pressure is applied. Shrub sprinklers are permanently mounted on risers and do not retract. Rotary sprinklers have gears or impellers visible beneath the protective cap.
Water distribution pattern:
Observe the spray pattern when the system is running. Sprays that produce a fan-shaped pattern are typically mist or micro-spray heads. Circular patterns with a rotating stream indicate rotary sprinklers. Stationary, fixed spray patterns usually belong to pop-up or shrub varieties.
Taking photos of your existing setup and bringing them to a hardware store or irrigation supplier can also be helpful for getting expert advice on compatible extension components.
Extension Methods Overview
There are three primary methods for extending lawn sprinkler heads, each with its own advantages and applications. Understanding these options will help you choose the best approach for your specific situation.
Riser extensions:
This is the most straightforward method and involves adding a threaded coupling between the existing riser pipe and the sprinkler head. Riser extensions come in various lengths and allow you to raise the sprinkler head without replacing any existing components. This method works well for moderate height increases of 2 to 12 inches and is compatible with most standard sprinkler systems.
Adjustable sprinkler heads:
Some modern sprinkler heads feature adjustable height mechanisms that allow you to raise or lower the spray nozzle without adding external components. These heads typically have a telescoping design or a threaded adjustment system. While convenient, adjustable heads may have limitations on maximum extension height and might require more frequent maintenance.
Complete head replacement:
In cases where the existing sprinkler head is old, damaged, or incompatible with available extension components, replacing the entire head may be the best option. This approach allows you to upgrade to a newer model with better features while simultaneously addressing height requirements. Complete replacement is particularly useful when upgrading from older systems that lack modern efficiency features.
The choice of extension method depends on factors such as the amount of height increase needed, the condition of existing components, your budget, and the complexity of your irrigation system.
Step-by-Step Extension Guide
Following these detailed steps will help you successfully extend your lawn sprinkler head regardless of which method you choose:
- Turn off the water supply: Locate the main water valve for your irrigation system and turn it completely off. If you have a separate irrigation meter, shut that off as well. Wait several minutes for any remaining water pressure to dissipate before proceeding.
- Locate the sprinkler head: Identify the specific sprinkler head you want to extend. Turn on that zone briefly to confirm which head activates, then turn the water off again.
- Remove the existing sprinkler head: Use an adjustable wrench or channel-lock pliers to carefully unscrew the sprinkler head from the riser pipe. Turn counterclockwise to loosen and remove. Be prepared for some water to drain from the pipe.
- Inspect the riser pipe: Examine the threads on the riser pipe for damage, corrosion, or mineral buildup. Clean the threads with a wire brush if necessary. Replace the riser pipe if the threads are severely damaged.
- Apply thread sealant: Wrap Teflon tape clockwise around the male threads of the riser pipe, or apply pipe thread sealant according to the manufacturer’s instructions. This ensures a watertight seal and prevents leaks.
- Install the extension: Screw the riser extension onto the riser pipe by hand, then tighten with a wrench. Do not overtighten, as this can damage the threads or crack plastic components.
- Attach the sprinkler head: Apply thread sealant to the threads of the extension, then screw on the sprinkler head. Tighten by hand first, then give a final snug turn with a wrench.
- Test the installation: Turn the water supply back on slowly and observe the connection points for leaks. Check that the sprinkler head operates correctly and adjusts to the new height without binding or restriction.
- Bury the extension: If using a pop-up sprinkler, ensure the extension is properly seated below ground level. Backfill around the base with soil, making sure not to compact it too tightly.
- Adjust the spray pattern: Fine-tune the sprinkler head’s position and spray direction to ensure optimal coverage of the intended area.
Take your time with each step and do not rush the process. Rushing can lead to improper installation, leaks, or damage to system components that will require additional repairs later.
Using Riser Extensions
Riser extensions are the most common and versatile method for extending lawn sprinkler heads. These components are essentially short pipes with threaded connections on both ends that fit between your existing riser pipe and sprinkler head.
To install a riser extension, first determine the appropriate length for your needs. Extensions are typically available in 2-inch, 4-inch, 6-inch, 8-inch, and 12-inch lengths. Choose the shortest extension that will achieve your desired height to minimize the risk of damage from lawn mowers or foot traffic.
When selecting an extension, ensure that the thread size matches your existing system. Most residential systems use 3/4-inch NPT (National Pipe Thread) connections, but it is important to verify this before purchasing. Bring a sample of your existing sprinkler head or riser to the store if you are unsure.
Installation involves removing the existing sprinkler head, applying thread sealant to the riser pipe threads, attaching the extension, and then reinstalling the sprinkler head on top of the extension. The entire process usually takes less than 15 minutes once you are familiar with the procedure.
One important consideration with riser extensions is maintaining proper water pressure. Adding too much height can reduce the effective spray distance of your sprinkler head, particularly with low-pressure systems. If you notice reduced coverage after installation, you may need to adjust the sprinkler head’s nozzle or consider upgrading to a pressure-compensating model.
Adjustable Sprinkler Heads
Modern adjustable sprinkler heads offer an alternative to traditional riser extensions. These heads feature built-in height adjustment mechanisms that allow you to raise or lower the spray nozzle without adding external components.
There are two main types of adjustable sprinkler heads:
Telescoping heads:
These heads have an inner riser that slides within an outer housing. You can adjust the height by extending or retracting the inner component. Some models offer infinite adjustment within a specified range, while others have preset height positions.
Threaded adjustment heads:
These heads use a threaded collar or ring that can be turned to raise or lower the spray assembly. Turning the adjustment mechanism moves the nozzle up or down relative to the head body.
Adjustable heads offer several advantages over riser extensions. They provide cleaner installation since there are no external pipes protruding from the ground. They also allow for fine-tuning of spray height without additional disassembly. Additionally, many adjustable heads include features like ratcheting nozzles that let you change the spray direction without moving the entire head.
However, adjustable heads tend to be more expensive than standard models with separate extensions. They may also have limitations on maximum extension height and could require more maintenance due to their complex internal mechanisms.
When choosing an adjustable head, consider your specific height requirements and whether the adjustment range meets your needs. Also check that the head is compatible with your existing system’s thread type and water pressure specifications.
Replacing the Entire Head
Sometimes the best approach to extending your sprinkler head is to replace it entirely with a model that offers greater height or better features. This method is particularly useful when your existing head is old, damaged, or lacks modern efficiency features.
Signs that replacement might be preferable to extension include:
- The existing sprinkler head is more than 10 years old
- Frequent leaks or maintenance issues with the current head
- Inadequate spray coverage even after extension
- The need for advanced features like pressure regulation or smart control compatibility
- Corrosion or physical damage to the head body
When replacing a sprinkler head, you have the opportunity to upgrade to a model that better suits your landscape needs. Modern sprinkler heads offer features such as:
- Pressure-compensating nozzles that maintain consistent spray distance regardless of water pressure variations
- Adjustable spray patterns that can be customized for irregularly shaped areas
- Low-flow options that reduce water consumption while maintaining effective coverage
- Smart irrigation compatibility for integration with home automation systems
- Improved durability with materials that resist UV damage and chemical exposure
The replacement process is similar to installing a riser extension, but you will be connecting a new head rather than an extension component. Make sure to select a replacement head that matches your system’s specifications and provides the height and features you need.
Common Problems and Solutions
Even with careful planning and execution, you may encounter problems when extending your lawn sprinkler head. Here are some of the most common issues and their solutions:
Leaks at connection points:
Leaks usually result from improper thread sealing or damaged threads. Disassemble the connection, clean the threads thoroughly, apply fresh Teflon tape or pipe dope, and reassemble. If threads are damaged, replace the affected component.
Reduced water pressure:
Adding height to your sprinkler system can reduce effective water pressure, especially if you are using multiple extensions. To address this, consider installing a pressure-regulating device, upgrading to low-pressure nozzles, or reducing the number of sprinkler heads operating simultaneously.
Sprinkler head binding or sticking:
This problem typically occurs when the extension is not properly aligned or when debris has entered the system. Remove the head, clean all components, ensure proper alignment, and reassemble. Check that the extension is not bent or misaligned.
Inadequate spray coverage:
If the extended sprinkler head does not cover the intended area adequately, you may need to adjust the nozzle settings, replace the nozzle with one that provides a wider spray pattern, or add additional sprinkler heads to fill coverage gaps.
Extension too tall:
Extensions that are excessively tall create tripping hazards and are more susceptible to damage from lawn mowers. If your extension is too tall, consider cutting it to the appropriate length or replacing it with a shorter model.
Water pooling around the base:
This indicates poor drainage or a leak in the system. Check that the area around the sprinkler head drains properly and that all connections are secure. You may need to add gravel or improve soil drainage around the installation point.
Sprinkler Spacing and Placement
Proper spacing and placement of extended sprinkler heads are crucial for achieving optimal irrigation coverage. Even if you successfully extend your sprinkler head to the right height, poor placement can result in uneven watering, waste, or damage to your landscape.
The general rule for sprinkler spacing is that each head should spray to the next head in the same zone. This overlapping pattern ensures that water is distributed evenly across the entire area without dry spots or overwatered patches. When extending your sprinkler heads, take the time to map out the spray patterns and adjust positions accordingly.
Consider the specific water requirements of different areas in your landscape. Lawns typically need more frequent, lighter watering compared to established trees and shrubs, which prefer deeper, less frequent irrigation. Extended sprinkler heads should be positioned to accommodate these varying needs.
Wind direction is another important factor in sprinkler placement. In areas with prevailing winds, position sprinkler heads so that spray patterns work with rather than against the wind. This prevents water drift and ensures that moisture reaches the intended targets.
Additionally, consider seasonal changes in your landscape. As plants grow or seasonal decorations are added, your sprinkler placement requirements may change. Installing adjustable sprinkler heads provides flexibility to adapt to these changing conditions throughout the year.
Maintenance Tips
Regular maintenance of your extended sprinkler system will ensure optimal performance and longevity. Here are some important maintenance practices to incorporate into your routine:
Seasonal inspection:
At the beginning of each growing season, inspect all extended sprinkler heads for damage, clogs, or misalignment. Check that all connections remain secure and that spray patterns are unobstructed. Replace worn components before they cause larger problems.
Cleaning nozzles:
Over time, mineral deposits and debris can clog sprinkler nozzles, reducing effectiveness. Remove nozzles periodically and clean them with a soft brush and mild detergent solution. For stubborn deposits, soak nozzles in vinegar before rinsing and reinstalling.
Winterization:
In freezing climates, it is essential to winterize your irrigation system to prevent freeze damage. Drain all water from extended components, including riser extensions and sprinkler heads. Consider installing automatic drain valves to simplify this process.
Pressure monitoring:
Regularly check your system’s operating pressure to ensure it remains within the recommended range for your sprinkler heads. Excessive pressure can damage extended components and cause misting that reduces watering effectiveness.
Lubrication:
Occasionally apply a small amount of silicone-based lubricant to threaded connections and moving parts. This helps prevent seizing and makes future maintenance easier.
Record keeping:
Keep a record of maintenance activities, component replacements, and system modifications. This information proves invaluable when troubleshooting problems or planning future upgrades.
Cost Considerations
Extending your lawn sprinkler head involves both initial costs and potential long-term savings. Understanding these financial aspects helps you make informed decisions about your irrigation system investments.
The cost of extending sprinkler heads varies depending on the method chosen and the scale of the project. Simple riser extensions typically cost between $5 and $15 per head, while adjustable sprinkler heads range from $15 to $50 each. Complete system upgrades or professional installation can significantly increase these costs.
However, properly extended sprinkler heads often result in substantial water savings. Improved coverage reduces runoff and ensures that water reaches intended targets rather than being lost to evaporation or overspray. Many homeowners see their water bills decrease by 10 to 20 percent after optimizing their irrigation systems.
Additionally, extended sprinkler heads can prevent landscape damage that would otherwise require costly repairs or replacements. Healthy, evenly watered lawns and gardens are more resistant to disease and require less intervention, reducing long-term maintenance expenses.
Consider the lifespan of different components when evaluating costs. Quality riser extensions and sprinkler heads can last 10 to 20 years with proper maintenance, making them cost-effective investments. Cheaper alternatives may need replacement more frequently, ultimately costing more over time.
If you are extending multiple sprinkler heads, purchasing components in bulk can reduce per-unit costs. Many suppliers offer discounts for larger orders, and you will always have spare parts available for future maintenance needs.
When to Call a Professional
While extending lawn sprinkler heads is generally a DIY-friendly task, certain situations call for professional assistance. Recognizing when to seek expert help can save you time, money, and frustration.
Consider hiring a professional irrigation specialist if:
