How to Drain Inground Sprinkler System? Blow-Out Procedure

Introduction

Protecting an inground sprinkler system from freeze damage is a critical part of seasonal maintenance. When water remains in the pipes, valves, and heads during winter, it expands as it freezes and can crack PVC, poly pipe, and brass components. The most reliable way to remove that water is the blow‑out method, which uses compressed air to push every drop out of the network. If you have been searching for How to Drain Inground Sprinkler System? this article walks you through the complete blow‑out procedure, explains alternative draining options, and provides practical tips to get the job done safely and efficiently.

Why Drain Your Inground Sprinkler System?

Water left in an inground irrigation network is the single biggest cause of costly spring repairs. When temperatures drop below freezing, any residual water turns to ice, expanding up to nine percent in volume. That expansion exerts tremendous pressure on pipe walls, fittings, and sprinkler heads, often resulting in hairline fractures that leak once the system is pressurized again. Even a small crack can waste thousands of gallons of water over a season and undermine landscape health. Draining the system eliminates that risk, extends the lifespan of every component, and ensures a trouble‑free start‑up when the growing season returns.

When to Drain the System

Timing is everything. In most climates the ideal window is after the last scheduled irrigation cycle but before the first hard freeze. A good rule of thumb is to complete the blow‑out when nighttime lows consistently reach 32 °F (0 °C) or lower. In regions with mild winters you may only need a partial drain, while areas with deep freezes require a full blow‑out every year. Check local frost dates and schedule the work a week or two before the average first freeze to give yourself a comfortable margin for unexpected cold snaps.

Tools and Materials You Will Need

Gathering the right equipment beforehand prevents interruptions and keeps the process safe. The essential list includes:

• Air compressor rated at 50–100 CFM (cubic feet per minute) with a minimum 10 HP motor
• Pressure regulator and gauge (0–80 PSI range)
• Quick‑connect coupler that matches your system’s blow‑out port (typically ¾‑inch or 1‑inch)
• Backflow preventer test kit (if local code requires verification after blow‑out)
• Adjustable wrenches, pipe wrenches, and a set of screwdrivers
• Protective eyewear, hearing protection, and heavy‑duty gloves
• Bucket or drain pan for any residual water at low points
• Marker or tape to label zones as you finish them

Optional but helpful items are a portable air hose reel, a pressure‑relief valve for the compressor, and a digital thermometer to confirm ambient temperature.

Safety Precautions Before You Start

Compressed air can cause serious injury if mishandled. Always wear safety glasses and hearing protection; the compressor can exceed 90 dB. Never point the air hose at yourself, other people, or animals. Verify that the compressor’s pressure relief valve works and that the regulator is set below the maximum pressure rating of your sprinkler components (usually 50 PSI for PVC, 80 PSI for polyethylene). Shut off the main water supply and relieve any residual pressure by opening a manual drain valve before connecting the compressor. Keep the work area clear of tripping hazards and ensure the compressor is on a stable, level surface. (See Also:When Was The Sprinkler Invented)

Blow‑Out Procedure Overview

The blow‑out method forces compressed air through each zone, pushing water out of the heads and low points. The process is performed zone by zone, starting with the zone farthest from the compressor connection to minimize air travel distance and pressure loss. Each zone is run until only a fine mist or no water emerges from the heads, indicating the line is clear. The compressor pressure is kept low enough to avoid damaging sprinkler heads—typically 40–50 PSI for residential systems. After all zones are cleared, the main line and backflow preventer are also blown out, and the system is left with the valves open to allow any remaining moisture to evaporate.

Step‑by‑Step Blow‑Out Procedure

1. Shut off the water supply. Close the main irrigation valve and any isolation valves upstream of the backflow preventer.
2. Relieve system pressure. Open a manual drain valve or the lowest sprinkler head to let any standing water escape.
3. Connect the compressor. Attach the quick‑connect coupler to the designated blow‑out port on the backflow preventer or the main line. Secure the connection with a wrench.
4. Set the regulator. Adjust the pressure regulator to 40 PSI for PVC systems or 50 PSI for polyethylene. Do not exceed the manufacturer’s maximum rating.
5. Activate the farthest zone. Using the controller, manually start the zone farthest from the compressor. Allow the compressor to run until only a fine mist appears at the heads.
6. Move to the next zone. Turn off the current zone, then start the next one in sequence. Repeat until every zone has been blown out.
7. Blow out the main line. With all zones off, open the main line drain valve (if present) and run the compressor for 30–60 seconds to clear any residual water in the supply pipe.
8. Clear the backflow preventer. If your system has a test cock, open it briefly while the compressor runs to expel trapped water.
9. Shut down the compressor. Close the regulator, disconnect the hose, and release any remaining pressure in the hose.
10. Leave valves open. Keep all zone valves and the main valve in the open position for the winter to allow any condensation to escape.
11. Label and document. Mark each zone on the controller as “winterized” and note the date for future reference.

Alternative Drain Methods

While the blow‑out is the gold standard, some homeowners use gravity drain or manual drain valves. Gravity drain relies on properly sloped piping and low‑point drains that open automatically when the system is shut off. Manual drain valves require the operator to open each valve individually after the water is turned off. Both methods can work in mild climates where the ground does not freeze deeply, but they leave a higher risk of trapped water in low spots or dead‑end lines. In areas with hard freezes, these alternatives are generally not recommended as a sole winterization strategy.

Comparison of Drain Methods

Tips and Best Practices

• Run the compressor at the lowest pressure that still clears the heads; higher pressure can rupture sprinkler nozzles.
• Work zone by zone in order of distance from the compressor to maintain adequate airflow.
• If a zone fails to clear, check for a closed valve, a clogged head, or a kinked pipe before increasing pressure.
• After blow‑out, pour a small amount of non‑toxic antifreeze (propylene glycol) into the backflow preventer test cock if local code permits; this adds a safety margin.
• Store the compressor and hoses in a dry, temperature‑controlled space to prevent moisture buildup inside the tank.
• Schedule a professional inspection every 3–5 years to verify pipe integrity and backflow preventer function.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Using too much pressure. Exceeding 80 PSI can blow off sprinkler heads and crack PVC fittings.
• Skipping the farthest zone first. Starting near the compressor leaves the distant lines under‑pressurized and may leave water behind.
• Forgetting to open the main drain valve. Water trapped in the supply line can freeze and split the main pipe.
• Leaving valves closed for winter. Closed valves trap condensation, leading to corrosion and freeze damage.
• Neglecting backflow preventer testing. Many municipalities require a certified test after winterization; failure to test can result in fines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a shop‑vac instead of an air compressor?

A shop‑vac does not deliver the sustained CFM needed to push water through long irrigation runs. It may work for very small systems, but for typical residential inground systems a compressor rated at 50 CFM or higher is required.

What pressure should I set for a polyethylene pipe system?

Polyethylene pipe tolerates up to 80 PSI, but most manufacturers recommend 50 PSI for blow‑out to avoid stress on fittings and sprinkler heads.

How do I know when a zone is fully cleared?

When only a fine mist or no water exits the sprinkler heads for 10–15 seconds, the zone is considered clear. You can also feel the air temperature at the head; it will feel cold and dry. (See Also:How Much To Fix A Sprinkler Head)

Is it necessary to add antifreeze after blowing out?

In most climates a thorough blow‑out is sufficient. Antifreeze is only required by code in certain jurisdictions or for systems with known low spots that cannot be fully evacuated.

Can I winterize the system myself or should I hire a pro?

If you have a suitable compressor and feel comfortable following the step‑by‑step procedure, DIY winterization is cost‑effective. For large commercial systems, complex zoning, or if you lack equipment, hiring a certified irrigation contractor is advisable.
