Understanding the Carburetor

How a Carburetor Works

The carburetor mixes air and fuel in the correct ratio for combustion. On a Craftsman leaf blower, a small diaphragm carburetor draws fuel from the tank through a needle valve, meters it through jets, and blends it with incoming air before the mixture enters the engine cylinder. Precise passages and tiny orifices mean even a thin film of gum can disrupt flow, leading to lean or rich conditions.

Signs Your Carburetor Needs Cleaning

Common symptoms include difficulty starting, the engine stalling shortly after start, uneven throttle response, excessive smoke, and a noticeable drop in blowing power. If the blower has been stored with fuel for more than 30 days, varnish formation is almost guaranteed. Regular inspection of the spark plug can also reveal a fouled tip, another clue that the carburetor is delivering an improper mixture.

Tools and Materials Needed

Gather the following items before you begin: a set of metric screwdrivers (Phillips and flat‑head), a 5 mm socket or wrench, needle‑nose pliers, a soft‑bristle brush (nylon or brass), carburetor cleaner spray (preferably a non‑chlorinated formula), a small container for soaking parts, clean lint‑free rags, compressed air canister or low‑pressure air compressor, a new carburetor gasket kit (optional but recommended), and safety glasses with nitrile gloves. Having a clean, well‑lit workbench and a magnetic tray for screws will prevent lost hardware.

Safety Precautions

Always work in a well‑ventilated area away from open flames or sparks because carburetor cleaner is highly flammable. Disconnect the spark plug wire to prevent accidental ignition. Wear safety glasses to protect eyes from spray splash and gloves to keep skin from prolonged solvent contact. Keep a fire extinguisher rated for Class B fires nearby. Never use gasoline as a cleaning solvent; it leaves residue and poses a severe fire hazard.

Step‑by‑Step Guide: How to Clean a Carburetor on a Craftsman Leaf Blower

Step 1: Prepare Workspace

Lay a clean shop towel on the bench, arrange tools within reach, and place the leaf blower on a stable surface. Remove the fuel cap and drain any remaining fuel into an approved container. This eliminates fire risk and prevents old fuel from contaminating the cleaned carburetor.

Step 2: Remove the Air Filter and Cover

Unscrew the air filter cover, typically secured by two Phillips screws. Take out the foam or paper filter element and inspect it; replace if it is torn or excessively dirty. Set the cover and filter aside in a clean area.

Step 3: Detach the Carburetor

Locate the carburetor mounting bolts (usually two 5 mm bolts). Using the socket or wrench, remove them while supporting the carburetor body. Disconnect the throttle linkage and fuel line, noting their orientation for reassembly. Place the carburetor on the towel. (See Also:What Is Cfm In A Leaf Blower)

Step 4: Disassemble the Carburetor

Remove the float bowl by unscrewing the bowl nut. Carefully take out the float, needle valve, and any retaining clips. Unscrew the main jet, pilot jet, and idle mixture screw if accessible. Keep all small parts organized in the magnetic tray.

Step 5: Clean Components

Spray carburetor cleaner generously into every passage, jet, and the float bowl. Use the soft brush to scrub away stubborn deposits. For heavily gummed parts, soak them in a container of cleaner for 10‑15 minutes, then blow out all passages with compressed air. Ensure no lint or debris remains.

Step 6: Inspect and Replace Parts

Examine the needle valve tip, float hinge, and gasket surfaces for wear or corrosion. Replace any damaged components, especially the gasket kit, to guarantee a proper seal. A worn needle valve can cause flooding, while a cracked float leads to erratic fuel level.

Step 7: Reassemble Carburetor

Reinstall jets and screws to their original positions, tightening to manufacturer torque specs (usually finger‑tight plus a quarter turn). Reattach the float, needle valve, and bowl, ensuring the float moves freely. Install the new gasket before bolting the bowl back on.

Step 8: Reinstall Carburetor and Test

Mount the carburetor onto the engine, reconnect the throttle linkage and fuel line, and tighten the mounting bolts. Reinstall the air filter and cover. Reconnect the spark plug wire, open the fuel valve, and prime the engine per the owner’s manual. Start the blower; it should fire on the first or second pull and run smoothly across the throttle range.

Deep Clean vs. Quick Clean Comparison

Tips and Best Practices

• Label each screw and linkage with masking tape before removal to avoid confusion during reassembly.
• Use a dedicated carburetor cleaning kit that includes a small brush set and a calibrated jet cleaning wire.
• After cleaning, apply a thin film of light machine oil to the throttle shaft pivot to prevent corrosion.
• Store the leaf blower with a fuel stabilizer and run the engine dry before long‑term storage.
• Keep a spare gasket kit in your tool box; gaskets degrade faster than metal parts.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Using gasoline or acetone as a cleaner – they leave residue and can damage rubber seals.
• Over‑tightening jet screws, which strips the soft aluminum threads.
• Forgetting to reconnect the throttle linkage, causing the engine to run at a fixed speed.
• Skipping the float level check; an incorrect float height leads to flooding or lean conditions.
• Reusing old gaskets – they often leak after a deep clean.

Troubleshooting After Cleaning

If the blower still runs rough, verify that all passages are clear by blowing compressed air through each jet again. Check the spark plug for proper gap and fouling. Ensure the fuel line is not kinked and that the fuel filter (if equipped) is clean. Confirm the idle mixture screw is set to the factory baseline (usually 1‑1.5 turns out). Persistent issues may indicate a worn carburetor body requiring replacement.

Maintenance Schedule

Adopt a simple schedule to keep the carburetor in top shape: after every 25 hours of use, perform a quick clean (spray external passages and wipe the bowl). Once per season or after 100 hours, execute the full deep clean described above. Replace the air filter annually, and inspect the fuel line for cracks each spring. Consistent maintenance prevents the buildup that leads to major performance loss. (See Also:How To Operate A Leaf Blower)

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean the carburetor on my Craftsman leaf blower?

A quick external clean every 25 hours of operation and a full deep clean once per season or after 100 hours will keep the carburetor functioning reliably.

Can I clean the carburetor without removing it from the engine?

Yes, a quick clean can be done in‑place by spraying cleaner into the throat and removing the bowl, but a deep clean requires full removal for access to all internal passages.

What type of carburetor cleaner is safest for the diaphragm and seals?

Use a non‑chlorinated, carburetor‑specific aerosol cleaner. Avoid acetone, brake cleaner, or gasoline, as they can degrade rubber diaphragms and gaskets.

Why does my leaf blower still stall after a thorough cleaning?

Check for a clogged fuel filter, a kinked fuel line, an incorrectly set idle mixture screw, or a worn needle valve. Also verify the spark plug condition and gap. (See Also:How Much For A Leaf Blower)

Is it necessary to replace the gasket kit every time I deep clean?

While not mandatory each time, replacing gaskets during a deep clean is best practice because old gaskets often lose sealing ability after exposure to solvents and heat.
