Why You Need to Change Your Ryobi Weed Eater String Regularly

Your Ryobi weed eater’s trimmer string is the workhorse of the tool, responsible for cutting through grass, weeds, and small brush with ease. Over time, even high-quality string will degrade from friction, impact with hard objects like rocks and sidewalks, and exposure to sun, moisture, and lawn chemicals. Failing to replace worn string not only reduces your trimmer’s cutting efficiency, but it can also cause long-term damage to your tool. When string is frayed or dull, the trimmer’s motor has to work harder to spin the head, which can lead to overheating, reduced battery life (for cordless models), or even premature motor failure. Regularly replacing your string ensures consistent cutting performance, protects your investment in your Ryobi tool, and keeps your lawn looking polished.

Signs Your String Is Worn Out

It’s easy to know when it’s time to replace your string if you know what to look for. Common signs include:

• Frayed, split, or uneven ends on the string
• Inconsistent cutting, where the trimmer misses patches of grass or leaves uneven stubble
• String breaking mid-use, even when trimming soft grass
• Reduced cutting width, as worn string can’t extend fully from the spool
• Excessive vibration when the trimmer is running, which can indicate an imbalanced spool from uneven string wear

If you notice any of these signs, it’s time to stop using the trimmer and replace the string right away to avoid further damage.

Tools and Materials You’ll Need for the Job

Replacing your Ryobi weed eater string requires minimal tools, most of which you likely already have in your garage. Gather these items before you start to make the process smooth and fast:

• Replacement trimmer string: Check your Ryobi owner’s manual for the correct gauge (thickness) for your specific model. Most residential Ryobi weed eaters use .080 inch string, while heavier-duty models use .095 inch. Never use string thicker than recommended, as it can overload the motor and damage the spool.
• Wire cutters or heavy-duty scissors: For cutting the new string to the correct length.
• Flathead screwdriver (optional): Helpful for prying off stuck spool housings or loosening tight spools.
• Work gloves: To protect your hands from sharp string edges and debris.
• Safety glasses: To protect your eyes from flying debris when removing the old spool.
• Clean rag and small brush: For wiping away grass clippings, dirt, and debris from the spool housing and trimmer head.

Having all these items on hand before you start will eliminate interruptions and make the replacement process take 10 minutes or less.

Safety Precautions to Take Before Starting

While changing a weed eater string is a low-risk task, taking a few basic safety steps will prevent injury and damage to your tool. Follow these precautions before you begin:

• Disconnect the power source completely: For corded models, unplug the trimmer from the electrical outlet. For cordless models, remove the battery pack by pressing the release button on the battery slot. For gas-powered models, turn off the fuel valve and let the engine cool completely before starting work.
• Wear protective gear: Put on work gloves to avoid cuts from sharp string edges, and safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris. Wear long pants and closed-toe shoes to protect your legs and feet from accidental contact with the trimmer head. If you’re using a gas-powered Ryobi weed eater, make sure the engine is completely cool before handling the trimmer head to avoid burns from hot exhaust parts.
• Work in a well-lit, clear area: Make sure your workspace is free of clutter, and you have plenty of light to see small parts like the spool and feed holes.
• Lock the trigger: Engage the trigger lock (if your model has one) to prevent the trimmer from accidentally starting while you’re working on it.

These simple steps will keep you safe and make the replacement process go smoothly.

Step-by-Step Guide: How to Change String in Ryobi Weed Eater?

Now that you have your tools and have taken safety precautions, follow these 7 simple steps to replace your string. This process works for nearly all Ryobi weed eater models, but always refer to your owner’s manual for model-specific instructions if you run into issues.

Step 1: Disconnect the Power Source

This is the most important safety step, and it should always be the first thing you do before working on any power tool. For corded Ryobi weed eaters, unplug the power cord from the wall outlet. For cordless models, press the battery release button on the side of the trimmer’s battery slot and pull the battery pack out completely. For gas-powered models, turn the fuel shut-off valve to the “off” position and let the engine cool for at least 15 minutes before starting work to avoid burns from hot engine parts. Engage the trigger lock to ensure the trimmer doesn’t start accidentally while you’re handling the head. (See Also:How To Weed Eater Line)

Step 2: Remove the Spool Housing

The spool housing is the circular cover on the bottom of the trimmer head that holds the string spool in place. On most Ryobi models, you can remove it by twisting it counterclockwise (left) by hand. If it’s stuck, you can use a flathead screwdriver to gently pry the edge of the housing loose, being careful not to damage the plastic tabs that lock it in place. Some newer Ryobi models have release tabs on the sides of the housing; press these in while pulling the housing straight off the trimmer head. Set the housing aside in a safe place where you won’t lose the small parts.

Step 3: Extract the Old Spool and Remaining String

Once the housing is removed, you’ll see the round spool holding the old string. Pull the spool straight out of the housing. If there is any remaining string on the spool, pull it off and discard it. If the spool is stuck in the housing, gently wiggle it back and forth to loosen it; don’t use excessive force, as this can break the spool or housing. Use your clean rag and small brush to wipe away any grass clippings, dirt, or debris from inside the housing and the trimmer head’s feed slot. Debris can cause the new string to jam or feed improperly, so make sure this area is completely clean before moving on. Inspect the feed hole (the small opening in the center of the housing where the string feeds through) to make sure it’s not clogged; if it is, use a paperclip or small screwdriver to clear it out.

Step 4: Measure and Cut the New Replacement String

Most Ryobi weed eaters require 10 to 15 feet of replacement string, but the exact length depends on your model and the size of the spool. Check your owner’s manual for the recommended length, or measure the length of the old string you removed and cut a piece of new string that’s 2 inches longer (to account for winding). Use your wire cutters or heavy scissors to cut the string, and make sure both ends are even to prevent jamming when you wind it onto the spool. If you’re using multi-line string (most Ryobi models use 2 lines, some use 4), cut two equal lengths of string for each line on the spool.

Step 5: Wind the New String Onto the Spool Correctly

This is the step where most people make mistakes, so pay close attention to the direction you wind the string. Look for a small arrow printed on the side of the spool – this indicates the correct winding direction, which is almost always clockwise for Ryobi models. Insert one end of the cut string into the small feed hole on the center of the spool, and pull it through until there is 4 to 6 inches of string sticking out of the hole. Hold the end of the string in place with your finger to keep it from slipping out, then wind the string tightly around the spool in the direction of the arrow. Wind evenly, without overlapping the string, and stop when you have 1/4 inch of space left between the wound string and the edge of the spool. If you’re using a multi-line spool, repeat this process for each feed hole, making sure each length of string is wound evenly and has 4 to 6 inches sticking out of the feed hole. Do not overwind the spool, as this can cause the string to tangle or jam when you try to feed it.

Step 6: Reinstall the Spool and Housing

Once the string is wound correctly, place the spool back into the trimmer head, making sure the loose ends of the string are aligned with the feed slots on the housing. If you have a bump feed model, make sure the string ends are pulled through the bottom of the housing so they stick out slightly from the cutting head. Align the tabs on the spool housing with the slots on the trimmer head, then twist the housing clockwise (right) until it locks firmly in place. You should hear a small click when it’s properly secured. If you used a flathead screwdriver to remove the housing, make sure you don’t overtighten it, as this can crack the plastic housing.

Step 7: Test the Weed Eater for Proper Function

Now it’s time to test your work. Reattach the battery (for cordless models) or plug the trimmer back into the outlet (for corded models). Stand in a clear, open area away from people and pets, then pull the trigger to start the trimmer. For bump feed models, tap the trimmer head on the ground a few times to release the string, and make sure it extends to the correct cutting length (usually 1 to 2 inches beyond the guard). For automatic feed models, release the trigger after a few seconds of running, and confirm that the string feeds out automatically. Trim a small patch of grass to check for even cutting, and make sure the string doesn’t jam or break during use. If the string doesn’t feed properly, turn off the trimmer, disconnect the power, and double-check that you wound the string in the correct direction and that the spool is installed correctly.

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Changing Ryobi Weed Eater String

Even experienced DIYers make mistakes when replacing trimmer string, but avoiding these common errors will save you time and frustration:

• Winding the string in the wrong direction: This is the most common mistake, and it will prevent the string from feeding properly when you use the trimmer. Always follow the arrow printed on your spool, and when in doubt, wind clockwise for most Ryobi models.
• Using string that’s too thick or too thin: Using string that’s thicker than your model’s recommended gauge will overload the motor and can break the spool. Thinner string will wear out faster and may not cut effectively. Check your owner’s manual for the correct gauge before buying replacement string.
• Overwinding the spool: Winding too much string onto the spool will cause it to bunch up and jam, preventing it from feeding. Leave 1/4 inch of space between the wound string and the edge of the spool, and wind tightly but not so tight that the spool is deformed.
• Skipping the debris cleaning step: Failing to clean grass clippings and dirt from the housing and feed slot can cause the new string to jam or feed unevenly. Take an extra 30 seconds to wipe down the housing before installing the new spool.
• Forgetting to leave enough string sticking out of the feed hole: If you don’t leave 4 to 6 inches of string sticking out of the feed hole when winding, the string won’t be able to feed out when you use the trimmer. Make sure you leave enough excess string before you start winding.
• Forcing the spool or housing into place: If the spool or housing doesn’t slide in easily, don’t force it. Check that the tabs are aligned correctly, and that the string isn’t caught in the feed slot. Forcing parts into place can crack the plastic or damage the trimmer head.

Bump Feed vs. Automatic Feed: Which Ryobi Model Do You Have?

Ryobi makes both bump feed and automatic feed weed eaters, and the string replacement process is slightly different for each. Knowing which type of model you have will help you avoid mistakes when winding and installing the new string. The table below breaks down the key differences between the two feed types:

If you’re not sure which type of model you have, check the label on the trimmer head or look up your model number on Ryobi’s website. The feed type will be listed in the product specifications. (See Also:How To String A Fs40c Stihl Weed Eater)

Tips for Extending the Life of Your Weed Eater String

Replacing your string is necessary, but you can extend its lifespan and reduce how often you need to change it by following these simple care tips:

• Avoid cutting hard objects: Never use your weed eater to cut through rocks, concrete, metal, or thick woody brush. These objects will quickly fray and break your string, and can also damage the trimmer’s motor and spool.
• Use the correct string for your model: As mentioned earlier, using string that’s the wrong gauge will cause premature wear. Stick to the manufacturer-recommended thickness for your Ryobi model.
• Clean the string after use: If you’ve been trimming weeds covered in sap, dirt, or lawn chemicals, wipe the string down with a clean rag after each use. Buildup of debris can dull the string and cause it to wear out faster.
• Store your trimmer properly: Keep your weed eater in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight when not in use. Prolonged exposure to UV rays and moisture will degrade the string, even if you’re not using the trimmer regularly. If you store your trimmer for long periods during the winter, remove the string spool entirely to prevent the string from becoming brittle and misshapen from sitting under tension.
• Don’t force the trimmer through thick vegetation: If you’re trimming overgrown weeds or thick brush, go slow and avoid pushing the trimmer too hard. Forcing the string through dense material will cause it to snap or fray.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here are answers to the most common questions Ryobi owners have about changing their weed eater string:

1. How often should I change the string on my Ryobi weed eater?

The frequency depends on how often you use the trimmer and what you’re cutting. For light residential use (trimming grass once a week), you’ll need to replace the string every 2 to 4 months. If you use the trimmer frequently or cut thick weeds and brush, you may need to replace it every 1 to 2 months. Inspect your string before each use to check for wear.

2. Can I use any brand of trimmer string for my Ryobi?

Yes, as long as the string is the correct gauge for your model. You don’t have to buy official Ryobi-branded string, but make sure it’s rated for weed eater use and matches the thickness recommended in your owner’s manual. Avoid using generic string that’s poorly made, as it will wear out faster and can jam the spool.

3. Why does my new string keep breaking right after I install it?

This is almost always caused by one of three issues: you wound the string in the wrong direction, you used string that’s too thick for your model, or you overwound the spool so it’s bunched up and jamming. Double-check the winding direction, make sure you’re using the correct string gauge, and wind the spool evenly with a small gap between the string and the spool edge.

4. What size string does my Ryobi weed eater use?

Most standard residential Ryobi weed eaters use .080 inch (2.0 mm) trimmer string, while heavier-duty models and commercial-grade trimmers use .095 inch (2.4 mm) string. Check the label on your trimmer head or your owner’s manual for the exact recommended size for your model. (See Also:Why Is My Echo Weed Eater Bogging Down)

5. How do I know if my Ryobi has a bump feed or automatic feed system?

Bump feed models require you to tap the trimmer head on the ground to release more string, while automatic feed models release string automatically when you release the trigger. You can also check your owner’s manual or the product specifications on Ryobi’s website by entering your model number.

6. Can I sharpen my weed eater string instead of replacing it?

No, trimmer string is designed to be replaced, not sharpened. The string is made of soft plastic or nylon that wears down quickly, and attempting to sharpen it will only cause it to break or become unbalanced, which can damage your trimmer. Replacing the string is inexpensive and takes less time than trying to sharpen it.
