Understanding Sprinkler Heads
Types of Sprinkler Heads
Sprinkler heads come in several designs, each suited to a specific watering pattern and pressure range. The most common residential types are fixed spray heads, rotary (gear‑driven) heads, impact heads, and drip‑style emitters. Fixed spray heads deliver a consistent fan‑shaped pattern and are ideal for small, rectangular areas. Rotary heads rotate a single stream, covering larger circles with lower precipitation rates. Impact heads use a hammer mechanism to fling water in a wide arc, making them suitable for large, open lawns. Drip emitters release water directly at the soil surface, perfect for flower beds and shrub zones.
When to Replace
Signs that a head needs replacement include uneven spray, water leaking from the body, a head that won’t pop up, or visible cracks in the nozzle. Mineral buildup can also degrade performance over time. If cleaning the nozzle and adjusting the arc do not restore proper coverage, a full replacement is usually the most cost‑effective solution.
Tools and Materials Needed
Before you begin, gather the following items so the job proceeds without interruptions:
- Adjustable wrench or slip‑joint pliers
- Pipe‑thread tape (Teflon tape)
- New sprinkler head matching the existing model or a compatible upgrade
- Small bucket or towel to catch residual water
- Screwdriver (flat‑head or Phillips, depending on the head’s set screw)
- Gloves and safety glasses
- Marker or chalk to note the original head’s orientation
Having the correct replacement head on hand is critical; mismatched threads or flow rates will cause leaks or poor coverage.
Safety Precautions
Irrigation systems operate under pressure, so always shut off the main water supply before starting. Release any residual pressure by opening a downstream valve or running a nearby faucet. Wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges and safety glasses to guard against debris. If the system is connected to a backflow preventer, ensure it remains closed during the work to avoid contamination of the potable water supply.
Step‑by‑Step Guide: How to Change Sprinkler Head?
Follow these ordered steps carefully. Each step explains the action and the reason it matters for a leak‑free, well‑adjusted installation.
-
Step 1: Turn Off Water Supply
Locate the main irrigation shut‑off valve, usually near the water meter or in a valve box. Turn it clockwise until it stops. Verify the water is off by attempting to run a zone from the controller; no water should flow.
-
Step 2: Relieve Pressure
Open the manual bleed valve on the zone you are working on, or briefly activate the zone from the controller for a few seconds. This drains water from the lines and prevents a sudden spray when you unscrew the head. (See Also:How To Turn On A Sprinkler Head)
-
Step 3: Remove Old Head
Use the adjustable wrench to grip the hex base of the sprinkler head. Turn counter‑clockwise to unscrew it from the riser. If the head is stuck, apply gentle heat with a hair dryer to expand the metal slightly, then try again. Place the old head in the bucket to catch any remaining water.
-
Step 4: Inspect and Clean
Examine the riser threads for corrosion, debris, or damaged threads. Clean the threads with a wire brush and wipe them dry. Check the surrounding soil for erosion that might have shifted the riser; if the riser is loose, tighten the connecting fitting before proceeding.
-
Step 5: Install New Head
Wrap the male threads of the riser with two to three wraps of pipe‑thread tape, moving in the direction of the threads. Screw the new head onto the riser by hand until snug, then give it a final quarter‑turn with the wrench. Align the head’s spray pattern using the marker you made earlier, or adjust the arc later during testing.
-
Step 6: Test and Adjust
Turn the main water supply back on. Activate the zone from the controller and observe the new head. Check for leaks at the base, verify the spray pattern covers the intended area, and adjust the arc or radius using the head’s built‑in adjustment screw. Once satisfied, secure any lock nuts and replace the valve box cover.
Choosing the Right Replacement Head
Compatibility Factors
Match the thread size (typically ½‑inch NPT for residential systems) and the flow rate (gallons per minute) of the original head. The pressure rating should also be compatible; a head rated for 30‑50 psi will not perform well on a system that runs at 70 psi without a pressure regulator.
Performance Considerations
Consider upgrading to a more efficient model if your current heads are outdated. Modern rotary heads with pressure‑compensating nozzles deliver uniform coverage even on sloped terrain. For water‑conservation goals, look for heads labeled “high efficiency” or “low precipitation rate.”
Comparison Table: Common Sprinkler Head Types
| Head Type | Typical Coverage | Pressure Range (psi) | Best Use Case | Average Cost (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fixed Spray | 5‑15 ft radius | 20‑30 | Small lawns, flower beds | $3‑$8 |
| Rotary (Gear‑Driven) | 15‑35 ft radius | 25‑50 | Medium to large lawns | $10‑$20 |
| Impact | 20‑45 ft radius | 30‑70 | Large open areas, sports fields | $12‑$25 |
| Drip Emitter | Point source | 10‑30 | Shrubs, gardens, containers | $1‑$4 |
Tips for a Successful Replacement
- Mark the original head’s orientation with chalk before removal; this saves time during final adjustment.
- Apply pipe‑thread tape in the direction of the threads to prevent unraveling when tightening.
- Hand‑tighten the new head first; over‑tightening with a wrench can crack the plastic body.
- If the riser is PVC, consider using a PVC‑compatible thread sealant instead of tape for a more durable seal.
- Run a full cycle after installation and walk the zone to verify coverage before closing the valve box.
- Keep a spare head of the same model in your tool kit for future quick fixes.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Forgetting to shut off the water: This leads to a messy, high‑pressure spray and possible injury.
- Using the wrong thread size: Mismatched threads cause leaks and can damage the riser.
- Over‑tightening the head: Cracks the housing and strips threads, requiring a more extensive repair.
- Neglecting to relieve pressure: Residual pressure can blow the head off when unscrewing.
- Skipping the test run: Undetected leaks or misaligned arcs waste water and leave dry spots.
- Ignoring system pressure: Installing a high‑pressure head on a low‑pressure zone results in poor performance.
Troubleshooting After Installation
If the new head still shows problems after the test run, consider these common issues:
- Leak at the base: Re‑apply pipe‑thread tape and ensure the head is seated squarely on the riser.
- Weak or uneven spray: Check the nozzle for debris; clean with a fine brush or replace the nozzle if worn.
- Head does not pop up: Verify the zone pressure meets the head’s minimum requirement; a clogged filter screen in the valve can also restrict flow.
- Overspray onto hardscape: Adjust the arc reduction screw or install a spray guard to direct water away from sidewalks.
Document any adjustments you make; this helps when you later service the system or hand it off to a professional. (See Also:How To Find Underground Sprinkler Valves)
Maintenance Tips to Extend Head Life
Regular maintenance reduces the frequency of replacements. Flush the system at the start of each season by running each zone for a few minutes with the heads removed, clearing sediment. Inspect heads monthly for clogged nozzles, cracked bodies, or misaligned arcs. In hard‑water areas, soak nozzles in vinegar annually to dissolve mineral deposits. Replace worn seals and O‑rings during the off‑season to prevent leaks before they start.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should sprinkler heads be replaced?
Most residential heads last 5‑10 years, but hard water, high pressure, and physical damage can shorten lifespan. Inspect annually and replace any head that shows persistent leaks or uneven spray.
Can I replace a sprinkler head without turning off the main water?
It is strongly discouraged. Even with the zone valve closed, residual pressure can cause a sudden spray. Always shut off the main supply and relieve pressure.
What if the riser threads are damaged?
If the riser threads are stripped, you may need to replace the riser or use a thread‑repair insert. In many cases, a short section of PVC pipe with a new threaded adapter can be glued in place.
Do I need a special tool for rotary heads?
Most rotary heads use the same ½‑inch NPT threads as spray heads, so a standard adjustable wrench works. Some models have a set screw that requires a hex key; check the manufacturer’s instructions.
How do I adjust the spray distance on a new head?
Turn the radius adjustment screw (usually located on the top of the head) clockwise to reduce distance and counter‑clockwise to increase it. Make small adjustments and test after each change. (See Also:How To Repair A Sprinkler Line)
Is it worth upgrading to pressure‑compensating heads?
Yes, especially if your system has varying pressure across zones. Pressure‑compensating heads deliver consistent flow regardless of pressure fluctuations, improving uniformity and saving water.
