Tools and Materials Needed

Before you begin changing the string on your Greenworks weed eater, gather the following items. Having everything ready will make the process smoother and faster.

• New trimmer line (appropriate diameter for your model)
• Small flathead screwdriver or trimmer tool
• Clean cloth or rag
• Work gloves (optional but recommended)
• Flashlight or good lighting
• Clean workspace

It is important to check your owner’s manual for the correct string diameter. Using the wrong size can cause feeding problems or damage the trimmer head.

Understanding Feed Systems

Greenworks offers several types of string feed systems, and each requires a slightly different approach when replacing the line. The three most common systems are manual feed, automatic feed, and bump feed.

Manual Feed System

With a manual feed system, you must manually pull the string through the trimmer head when it runs short. These models typically have a small hole or slot where you can thread the new line.

Automatic Feed System

Automatic feed systems release string automatically as the line wears down. These usually have a spring-loaded mechanism inside the trimmer head that feeds the line when you tap the trimmer on the ground or trigger a release button.

Bump Feed System

Bump feed is a type of automatic feed system where you tap the bottom of the trimmer head on the ground to release more line. This is one of the most common systems found on Greenworks models.

Preparation Steps

Proper preparation is key to a successful string change. Follow these steps before you begin:

1. Turn off the tool. Remove the battery or disconnect the power source completely.
2. Clean the trimmer head. Use a cloth to remove grass clippings, dirt, and debris from around the string area.
3. Check the spool. Remove the trimmer head cover or cap to access the spool where the string is wound.
4. Inspect the old string. Note the direction it was wound and the amount currently on the spool.
5. Prepare the new string. Cut a length of approximately 10 to 15 feet, depending on your model.

These preparation steps help prevent accidents and ensure that you install the new string correctly the first time.

Replacing String on Manual Feed Models

Manual feed models are among the easiest to service. Here is how to change the string on these types of trimmers:

1. Remove the trimmer head cap. Most caps twist off or can be pried off with a flathead screwdriver.
2. Take out the old spool. Carefully lift the spool out of the housing.
3. Remove remaining old string. Pull any leftover string from the spool and clean out debris.
4. Thread the new string. Insert one end of the new string through the hole in the center of the spool.
5. Wind the string. Wind the string clockwise around the spool, keeping it taut but not overly tight.
6. Reinstall the spool. Place the spool back into the trimmer head housing.
7. Feed the string through. Pull the string through the exit hole until about 6 inches extend beyond the trimmer head.
8. Replace the cap. Secure the trimmer head cap back in place.

After installation, test the string by gently pulling on it to make sure it is secure and feeds smoothly.

Replacing String on Automatic Feed Models

Automatic feed systems require a bit more attention to detail. Follow these steps for a successful replacement:

1. Remove the battery. Always disconnect power before working on the tool.
2. Press the release button. Many automatic feed models have a small button on the side of the trimmer head that releases tension.
3. Remove the trimmer head cover. Twist or pry off the outer cover to expose the spool.
4. Remove the old spool. Lift the spool straight out of the housing.
5. Clean the housing. Wipe away any dirt, grass, or old string fragments.
6. Insert new string. Place the new string into the designated groove or hole on the spool.
7. Wind carefully. Wind the string in the same direction as the original, typically clockwise. Keep tension even.
8. Reinstall the spool. Place the spool back into the housing, making sure it sits flush.
9. Replace the cover. Snap or twist the cover back into place.
10. Test the feed. Gently pull the string to confirm it moves freely and feeds correctly.

Make sure the spool rotates freely after installation. If it feels stuck, remove it and check for misalignment.

Replacing String on Bump Feed Models

Bump feed models are popular because they automatically dispense line when needed. Here is how to replace the string:

1. Disconnect the battery. Safety first always.
2. Turn the trimmer upside down. This gives you better access to the bottom of the trimmer head.
3. Locate the release mechanism. Some models have a button, while others require you to twist the head.
4. Remove the outer cover. This may involve pressing tabs or twisting a collar.
5. Take out the spool. Lift the spool out carefully to avoid damaging internal components.
6. Empty old string. Remove all remaining old line from the spool.
7. Thread new string. Insert one end of the new string through the hole in the spool.
8. Wind the string. Wind evenly in the correct direction, usually clockwise. Fill the spool to capacity without overlapping.
9. Reinstall the spool. Place the spool back into the housing, ensuring it aligns properly.
10. Replace the cover and test. Put the cover back on and gently bump the trimmer head on the ground to test the feed.

After installation, always perform a test run in a safe area to make sure the string feeds properly.

Comparison of String Types and Diameters

Choosing the right string type and diameter is crucial for optimal performance. Here is a comparison of common options:

Always check your owner’s manual for the recommended string diameter. Using a string that is too thick or too thin can cause feeding problems and reduce the life of your trimmer.

Tips and Best Practices

Here are some valuable tips to help you get the most out of your string replacement:

• Use the correct diameter. Never guess. Check the manual or the old string for the exact size.
• Wind evenly. Uneven winding causes tangles and feeding issues.
• Keep tension consistent. Too loose and the string tangles. Too tight and it may not feed properly.
• Clean regularly. Remove debris from the trimmer head after each use to prevent buildup.
• Store properly. Keep spare string in a dry place to prevent moisture damage.
• Test before use. Always check the string feed before starting a trimming job.
• Use gloves. Protect your hands from cuts and abrasions.
• Work in good lighting. Natural light or a flashlight makes it easier to see small parts.
• Follow the winding direction. Most spools wind clockwise, but always check your model.
• Don’t overfill the spool. Leave a small gap at the top to allow the string to feed smoothly.

These best practices will help you avoid common problems and keep your trimmer performing at its best.

Common Mistakes and Problems

Even experienced users can make mistakes when changing trimmer string. Here are the most common issues and how to avoid them:

Using the Wrong Diameter

One of the most frequent mistakes is using string that is too thick or too thin. This can cause the string to jam, feed too quickly, or not feed at all. Always verify the correct diameter before purchasing replacement string.

Incorrect Winding Direction

Winding the string in the wrong direction can cause it to come undone or tangle. Most spools wind clockwise, but some models are different. Refer to your manual or observe the original winding direction.

Overfilling the Spool

Packing too much string onto the spool prevents proper feeding. Leave a small gap at the top of the spool to allow the string to unwind smoothly.

Poor Spool Alignment

If the spool is not seated properly in the housing, the string will not feed correctly. Make sure the spool sits flush and rotates freely.

Skipping the Cleaning Step

Dirt and debris in the trimmer head can cause the string to tangle or jam. Always clean the housing and spool before installing new string.

Ignoring the Owner’s Manual

Your manual contains model-specific instructions that can prevent many problems. Always consult it before beginning any maintenance work.

By avoiding these common mistakes, you can save time, reduce frustration, and extend the life of your trimmer.

When to Replace the String

Knowing when to replace your trimmer string is just as important as knowing how to do it. Here are the signs that it is time for a new string:

• String is too short. If the line barely extends past the trimmer guard, it is time for a replacement.
• Frequent tangling. Constant knots and tangles indicate worn or improperly wound string.
• Uneven cutting. If your trimmer leaves patches of uncut grass, the string may be worn or not rotating properly.
• Visible wear. Frayed, cracked, or discolored string should be replaced immediately.
• Automatic feed not working. If the string is not feeding automatically, check for tangles or replace the string.
• Excessive noise. A noisy trimmer may indicate that the string is too short or the spool is not seated correctly.

Regular inspection and timely replacement will keep your trimmer working efficiently and reduce the risk of damage to the tool.

Maintenance Schedule

Establishing a regular maintenance routine helps prevent unexpected string failures and keeps your trimmer in top condition. Here is a suggested schedule: (See Also:How To String A Ryobi S430 Weed Eater)

Troubleshooting Issues

Even with careful installation, you may encounter problems. Here are some common issues and their solutions:

String Not Feeding

If the string is not feeding, check for tangles in the spool. Remove the spool, unwind the string, and rewind it evenly. Also, make sure the spool is seated correctly in the housing.

String Coming Out Too Fast

This usually means the string is too thin or the spool is overfilled. Use the correct diameter and do not pack the spool too tightly.

String Breaking Frequently

Frequent breakage can be caused by using low-quality string, hitting hard objects, or improper winding. Use a reputable brand and wind the string evenly.

Trimmer Head Wobbling

If the head wobbles, the spool may not be seated correctly or there may be debris in the housing. Remove the spool, clean the area, and reinstall properly.

Automatic Feed Not Working

Check if the release mechanism is clogged with debris. Clean the mechanism and test again. If the problem persists, the internal spring may need replacement.

If troubleshooting does not resolve the issue, consult the owner’s manual or contact Greenworks customer support for further assistance.
