Understanding Sprinkler Head Types

Before you can replace a head, you need to know which type you are dealing with. Residential irrigation systems typically use one of four common designs, each with distinct operating characteristics.

Pop‑Up Spray Heads

Pop‑up spray heads are the most common in residential lawns. They rise above the turf when the system pressurizes and retract when the water shuts off. These heads deliver a fixed fan‑shaped pattern and are ideal for small to medium rectangular areas.

Rotary (Gear‑Drive) Heads

Rotary heads rotate a stream of water in a full or partial circle. They cover larger radii than pop‑up sprays and are often used for expansive lawns or sports fields. The rotation speed can be adjusted to match precipitation rates.

Impact Heads

Impact heads use a spring‑loaded arm that strikes a diffuser, creating a pulsating spray. They are durable, handle high pressure well, and are frequently found in commercial or agricultural settings.

Drip Emitters and Micro‑Sprays

While not traditional “heads,” drip emitters and micro‑sprays are part of many modern irrigation zones. They deliver water directly to the root zone with minimal evaporation. If a drip emitter fails, the replacement process differs slightly but the same basic principles apply.

Signs Your Sprinkler Head Is Broken

Early detection prevents water waste and landscape damage. Look for these tell‑tale indicators:

• No pop‑up: The head stays flush with the ground when the zone runs.
• Uneven spray: Water shoots out in a single jet, dribbles, or sprays in the wrong direction.
• Visible damage: Cracks, broken nozzles, or missing caps are obvious signs.
• Pooling water: Excess water around a single head suggests a leak or a stuck valve.
• Reduced pressure: A sudden drop in zone pressure often points to a broken head allowing water to escape underground.

If you notice any of these symptoms, it is time to plan a replacement.

Tools and Materials Needed

Gather the following items before you start. Having everything on hand eliminates trips to the hardware store mid‑job.

• Adjustable wrench or slip‑joint pliers
• Pipe‑thread tape (Teflon tape)
• Replacement sprinkler head (matching type, thread size, and flow rate)
• Small hand trowel or soil probe
• Bucket or container to catch water
• Gloves and safety glasses
• Marker or flag to identify the zone
• Optional: pipe cutter if the riser is damaged

Confirm the thread size (typically ½‑inch NPT) and the flow rating (gallons per minute) of the old head so the new one matches exactly.

Safety Precautions Before Starting

Irrigation systems operate under pressure and can cause injury if not handled correctly. Follow these safety steps:

1. Turn off the main water supply to the irrigation system.
2. Depressurize the zone by opening the manual drain valve or running the controller through a “manual off” cycle.
3. Wear safety glasses to protect your eyes from debris or sudden water release.
4. Use gloves to avoid cuts from sharp pipe edges or broken plastic.
5. Mark the zone on the controller so you can verify the correct circuit later.

Never attempt to unscrew a head while the system is pressurized; the sudden release can cause the head to become a projectile. (See Also:How Deep Are Water Sprinkler Lines)

Step‑by‑Step Guide: How to Change a Broken Sprinkler Head?

Follow these ordered steps to replace the head efficiently and correctly.

1. Locate the faulty head. Run the zone briefly (if safe) to see which head fails to pop up or sprays incorrectly. Mark it with a flag.
2. Shut off water and depressurize. Close the main valve and open the zone’s manual drain to relieve pressure.
3. Excavate around the head. Use a hand trowel to remove soil in a 6‑inch radius, exposing the riser and the connection to the lateral pipe. Keep the sod intact for easy replacement.
4. Remove the old head. Grip the riser with an adjustable wrench and turn counter‑clockwise. If the head is stuck, apply gentle heat with a hair dryer to expand the plastic, then retry.
5. Inspect the riser and lateral. Look for cracked threads, corrosion, or debris. Clean the threads with a wire brush and wrap fresh Teflon tape clockwise around the male threads.
6. Install the new head. Thread the replacement onto the riser by hand, then tighten with the wrench an additional quarter turn. Avoid over‑tightening, which can crack the plastic.
7. Backfill and settle. Replace the soil, gently tamping it down. Ensure the head sits at the correct height — typically flush with the surrounding grade when retracted.
8. Restore water and test. Open the main valve, then run the zone from the controller. Observe the new head for proper pop‑up, spray pattern, and coverage.
9. Adjust as needed. Use the head’s adjustment screw or nozzle to fine‑tune radius and arc (see the Adjusting Spray Pattern section).
10. Replace sod and clean up. Lay the saved sod back over the area, water lightly to help it root, and store tools.

Completing these steps restores full functionality and prevents further water loss.

Choosing the Right Replacement Head

Matching the replacement to the original specifications ensures consistent performance across the zone. Consider the following factors:

• Thread size and type: Most residential heads use ½‑inch NPT; verify with a thread gauge.
• Flow rate (GPM): The new head must deliver the same gallons per minute as the old one to maintain balanced pressure.
• Spray pattern: Choose a fan, half‑circle, full‑circle, or adjustable nozzle that matches the layout.
• Pressure rating: Heads are rated for specific pressure ranges (e.g., 20‑50 psi). Exceeding the rating causes misting; too low yields poor coverage.
• Material: UV‑stabilized plastic lasts longer in sunny climates; brass or stainless steel is better for high‑traffic areas.

Use this table as a quick reference when shopping. Always double‑check the manufacturer’s spec sheet before purchase.

Adjusting Spray Pattern and Coverage

After installation, the head may need fine‑tuning to avoid dry spots or overspray onto hardscapes. Most pop‑up heads have a small set screw on the nozzle that changes the radius; rotary heads often have a radius adjustment collar and an arc adjustment dial.

To adjust a pop‑up head:

1. Run the zone and observe the spray distance.
2. Insert a flat‑head screwdriver into the radius screw.
3. Turn clockwise to reduce radius, counter‑clockwise to increase.
4. For arc adjustment, rotate the nozzle body until the desired sector is covered.

For rotary heads, follow the manufacturer’s instructions — typically a “radius” knob and an “arc” knob. Make small adjustments, then re‑run the zone to verify. Proper adjustment conserves water and ensures even turf growth.

Testing the System After Replacement

Testing confirms that the new head integrates seamlessly with the rest of the zone.

1. Run the zone for a full cycle (usually 10‑15 minutes).
2. Walk the coverage area and note any dry patches or pooling.
3. Check the pressure gauge on the mainline (if installed) to verify the zone pressure remains within design limits.
4. Inspect the new head for leaks at the thread connection.
5. Verify the controller’s run time still matches the precipitation rate of the zone.

If any anomalies appear, return to the adjustment steps or re‑examine the riser for hidden damage.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced DIYers can slip up. Here are the most frequent errors and how to prevent them:

• Mismatched flow rate: Installing a head with a higher GPM than the zone design creates pressure drops elsewhere. Always match the original GPM.
• Over‑tightening: Cracking the plastic body or stripping threads leads to leaks. Hand‑tight plus a quarter turn is sufficient.
• Skipping Teflon tape: Without tape, threads can leak under pressure. Wrap 3‑4 wraps clockwise.
• Incorrect height: A head set too high gets damaged by mowers; too low causes poor pop‑up. Keep the top flush with the soil surface when retracted.
• Forgetting to depressurize: Removing a head under pressure can cause injury and damage the lateral pipe.
• Ignoring zone balance: Replacing only one head in a zone with a different type (e.g., swapping a spray for a rotary) unbalances precipitation rates.

Avoiding these pitfalls saves time, money, and future service calls. (See Also:How To Adjust Rainbird 5004 Sprinkler Head)

Maintenance Tips for Longevity

Regular upkeep extends the life of every sprinkler head and keeps the system efficient.

• Seasonal inspection: At the start of each watering season, run each zone and visually inspect every head.
• Clean nozzles: Remove debris, mineral buildup, or grass clippings with a soft brush or a pin‑type nozzle cleaner.
• Check for leaks: Look for soggy spots or hissing sounds that indicate underground leaks.
• Adjust for growth: As plants mature, raise or relocate heads to maintain proper coverage.
• Winterize properly: In freeze‑prone climates, blow out the system with compressed air to prevent cracked pipes and heads.
• Replace worn seals: The rubber wiper seal on pop‑up heads degrades over time; replace it annually for smooth operation.

A proactive maintenance schedule reduces the frequency of emergency replacements.

Troubleshooting Persistent Issues

If the new head still misbehaves, consider these deeper causes:

• Clogged lateral line: Debris upstream can restrict flow. Flush the zone by removing the farthest head and running water until clear.
• Valve malfunction: A sticky zone valve may not open fully, starving the head. Test the valve solenoid with a multimeter.
• Pressure regulator failure: If the system uses a pressure regulator, a faulty unit can deliver too much or too little pressure.
• Incorrect zone wiring: A miswired controller may activate the wrong valve, causing unexpected behavior.
• Soil settlement: Over time, soil can shift, altering head height. Re‑level the head and backfill as needed.

Systematic troubleshooting isolates the root cause and prevents repeated head replacements.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should sprinkler heads be replaced?

Most residential heads last 5‑10 years depending on water quality, UV exposure, and usage. Inspect annually and replace any that show cracking, inconsistent spray, or failure to pop up.

Can I replace a sprinkler head without turning off the main water?

No. Working on a pressurized system is dangerous and can damage the lateral pipe. Always shut off the main supply and depressurize the zone first.

What if the riser is broken below ground?

If the riser (the vertical pipe connecting the lateral to the head) is cracked, you will need to cut it out and install a new riser segment using a coupling. This requires a pipe cutter and additional PVC or poly pipe.

Do I need a specific brand of replacement head?

Not necessarily. As long as the thread size, flow rate, pressure rating, and spray pattern match the original, any reputable brand will work. However, sticking with the same brand can simplify future parts sourcing. (See Also:How Much Does The Grandmaster Sprinkler Cost)

How do I know the GPM of my existing head?

Check the manufacturer’s label on the head body or look up the model number online. If the label is missing, you can estimate by measuring the water output over a timed period using a bucket.

Is it okay to mix head types in the same zone?

Mixing head types (e.g., pop‑up sprays with rotaries) in a single zone creates uneven precipitation rates, leading to over‑watering some areas and under‑watering others. Keep each zone uniform.

What tools are essential for a beginner?

At minimum, an adjustable wrench, Teflon tape, a hand trowel, gloves, and safety glasses. A pipe cutter and thread gauge are helpful for more advanced repairs.
