Understanding Impact Sprinkler Heads

How They Work

An impact sprinkler uses a spring‑loaded arm that strikes a rotating nozzle, creating the characteristic “click‑click” sound. Water pressure forces the arm to swing, and each impact rotates the nozzle a few degrees. This simple mechanical action produces a wide, adjustable arc and a long throw distance, making it ideal for lawns, sports fields, and agricultural fields.

Key Components

The main parts you will interact with during adjustment include:

• Nozzle – determines the flow rate and spray pattern.
• Arc adjustment screw – sets the left and right rotation limits.
• Distance (radius) adjustment screw – controls how far the water throws.
• Pressure regulator (optional) – maintains consistent performance across varying supply pressures.
• Filter screen – prevents debris from clogging the nozzle.

Tools and Materials Needed

Gather the following before you begin:

• Adjustable wrench or sprinkler‑head key (often 7/16 in. or 1/2 in.)
• Flat‑head screwdriver (for arc and distance screws)
• Bucket or catch basin (to collect water while testing)
• Gloves and safety glasses
• Manufacturer’s manual (for model‑specific torque values)
• Pen and paper (to note current settings)

Safety Precautions

Before touching any sprinkler head, shut off the main water supply to the zone you are working on. Release residual pressure by opening a downstream valve or running the system briefly. Wear gloves to protect your hands from sharp edges and safety glasses to guard against unexpected water spray. Never adjust a head while the system is pressurized; the rotating arm can cause injury.

Step‑by‑Step Adjustment Guide

1. Turn off the water supply. Locate the zone valve for the sprinkler line and close it. Verify pressure is relieved by opening a test cock or running the zone for a few seconds.
2. Remove the sprinkler head (if necessary). Use the wrench to unscrew the head from the riser. Keep the riser clean; debris can affect performance.
3. Locate the adjustment screws. Most impact heads have two small set screws: one labeled “ARC” or “L/R” for left/right limits, and another labeled “DIST” or “RADIUS” for throw distance.
4. Adjust the arc. Insert the screwdriver into the arc screw. Turn clockwise to decrease the arc (narrower coverage) and counter‑clockwise to increase it (wider coverage). Typical residential arcs range from 40° to 360°. Make small increments—about 1/8 turn—then re‑install the head temporarily to test.
5. Adjust the distance. With the arc set, turn the distance screw. Clockwise reduces the throw; counter‑clockwise extends it. The maximum throw is limited by water pressure and nozzle size. Again, adjust in small steps and test.
6. Re‑install and test. Screw the head back onto the riser, hand‑tighten, then give a final snug with the wrench (do not overtighten). Turn the zone valve on and observe the spray pattern. Fine‑tune the screws until the coverage matches your design layout.
7. Lock the settings. Some models feature a locking nut on each adjustment screw. Tighten the lock nuts to prevent vibration from shifting the settings over time.

Adjusting Specific Models

Hunter Impact Sprinklers

Hunter’s PGP‑Series and I‑Series use a single “ARC” screw and a “RADIUS” screw. The arc screw is located on the side of the body; the radius screw sits on the top. Hunter recommends setting the arc first, then the radius. Their manuals often include a chart linking nozzle size to maximum radius at a given pressure. (See Also:How To Run Sprinkler Pipe)

Rain Bird Impact Sprinklers

Rain Bird’s 5000 Series and 1800 Series feature a “Left/Right” adjustment knob and a “Distance” knob. The knobs are tool‑free but can be turned with a screwdriver for finer control. Rain Bird heads often have a built‑in pressure regulator; ensure it is set to the system’s design pressure before adjusting.

Toro Impact Sprinklers

Toro’s Super 800 and 570 Series use a “Sector” adjustment screw and a “Range” screw. Toro heads sometimes include a “Quick‑Set” collar that snaps into preset positions (90°, 180°, 360°). For custom arcs, loosen the collar, set the sector screw, then re‑engage the collar.

Tips and Best Practices

• Map your zones first. Sketch the layout, note head spacing, and calculate required overlap (typically 30‑50 %).
• Adjust one head at a time. Isolate a single zone to avoid confusing spray patterns.
• Use a pressure gauge. Verify that the zone pressure matches the manufacturer’s recommended range; pressure that is too high or low will skew adjustments.
• Record settings. Write down the number of turns for each screw so you can replicate or troubleshoot later.
• Seasonal check‑ups. Re‑evaluate arc and distance at the start of each watering season; soil settlement and plant growth can shift coverage.
• Clean filters regularly. A clogged screen reduces flow, making the head appear under‑adjusted.
• Consider a smart controller. Modern controllers can run “cycle‑and‑soak” programs that reduce runoff, complementing well‑tuned heads.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

• Adjusting while pressurized. This can damage the internal spring and cause inaccurate settings.
• Over‑tightening the head. Stripping the threads on the riser leads to leaks and misalignment.
• Ignoring nozzle size. Changing the arc or distance without matching the nozzle to the design flow creates uneven precipitation rates.
• Setting the arc too wide. Over‑spray onto sidewalks, driveways, or buildings wastes water and can cause property damage.
• Forgetting to lock screws. Vibration from water hammer or mowing equipment can gradually shift unsecured settings.
• Neglecting pressure regulation. If the system pressure fluctuates, a head without a regulator will deliver inconsistent coverage.

Troubleshooting Common Issues

Even with careful adjustment, problems can arise. Here are the most frequent symptoms and remedies:

• Head does not rotate. Check for a seized impact arm; clean debris from the arm pivot and ensure the spring is intact.
• Uneven spray pattern (gaps or heavy spots). Verify that the arc limits are set correctly and that the nozzle is not partially blocked. Clean the filter screen.
• Water hammer noise. Install a pressure‑reducing valve or a water‑hammer arrestor upstream of the zone.
• Head leaks at the base. Tighten the connection to the riser, but avoid over‑tightening. Replace the O‑ring if it appears cracked.
• Reduced throw distance. Confirm supply pressure meets the head’s minimum. If pressure is low, consider a larger nozzle or a booster pump.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I adjust my impact sprinkler heads?

Adjustments are typically needed at the start of each irrigation season and after any major landscaping changes. Routine visual checks during the season can catch drift early.

Can I adjust the arc and distance without removing the head?

Yes, most models allow in‑place adjustment using a screwdriver. However, removing the head gives better access and prevents accidental water spray while you work. (See Also:How To Fix Rain Bird Sprinkler Head)

What is the ideal overlap between adjacent impact heads?

Aim for 30‑50 % overlap of the spray radii. This ensures uniform precipitation and eliminates dry strips.

Do I need a special tool for the adjustment screws?

A standard flat‑head screwdriver fits most adjustment screws. Some brands provide a proprietary key, but a common screwdriver works in the vast majority of cases.

Why does my impact sprinkler make a loud clicking noise?

The clicking is normal—it’s the impact arm striking the nozzle. Excessive noise may indicate a worn spring, debris in the arm pivot, or excessively high pressure.
