Understanding Hunter Sprinkler Head Types

Before adjusting your Hunter sprinkler heads, it’s important to identify which type you have, as each model has slightly different adjustment mechanisms and capabilities. Hunter offers four main categories of sprinkler heads for residential and commercial use, each designed for specific landscape needs:

  • Pop-Up Spray Heads: These are the most common type for residential lawns, flower beds, and small, enclosed areas. They pop up 4-12 inches when the system is active, delivering a fixed spray pattern that covers distances from 3 to 15 feet. Common models include the Hunter PRO-SPRAY, PGJ, and PGP Ultra.
  • Rotor Heads: Designed for large, open lawn areas, rotor heads rotate slowly to distribute water over a wide area, with coverage distances ranging from 15 to 50 feet. They are ideal for commercial properties, large residential lots, and athletic fields. Popular Hunter rotor models include the PGP-04, PGP-06, and PGP-12.
  • MP Rotator Nozzles: Hunter’s signature water-efficient nozzle, the MP Rotator replaces standard spray nozzles and uses multiple rotating streams to reduce misting and wind drift. They are available in a range of coverage distances (3 to 30 feet) and arc settings, making them suitable for almost any lawn or landscape area.
  • Micro-Irrigation Heads: These low-volume heads are designed for planting beds, shrubs, trees, and garden areas. They deliver water directly to plant roots, minimizing evaporation and runoff. Common Hunter micro-irrigation products include the Xeri-Spray micro sprinklers and Xeri-Bug drip emitters.

Identifying your head type will ensure you use the correct adjustment method and avoid damaging the internal components during the process.

How Hunter Sprinkler Heads Work

To make accurate adjustments, it’s helpful to understand the basic operation of Hunter sprinkler heads. All Hunter heads share core components that control water distribution:

  • The body is the main housing that sits below ground level when the head is retracted, and rises when the system is pressurized.
  • The nozzle is the outlet through which water flows, shaped to create the desired spray pattern (spray, rotor, or multi-stream).
  • The arc adjustment mechanism controls how many degrees of a circle the head covers, ranging from a narrow 40-degree strip to a full 360-degree circle.
  • The radius adjustment mechanism controls how far the water reaches from the head, allowing you to tailor the spray distance to your landscape’s size.
  • A built-in spring pushes the head up when water pressure is applied, and retracts it when the system shuts off.

When the sprinkler zone is activated, water pressure pushes the head above ground and flows through the nozzle in the pre-set arc and radius. Adjusting the arc and radius settings changes the flow path to match your landscape’s layout, eliminating dry spots and overspray.

Tools You’ll Need for Adjustment

One of the biggest benefits of Hunter sprinkler systems is that most adjustments require no special tools at all. However, having the right tools on hand will make the process faster and easier, especially for larger systems. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Hunter Adjustment Key: Most Hunter heads come with a dedicated plastic adjustment key that fits into the adjustment slots on the top of the head. If you lost the original key, you can purchase a replacement at most hardware stores or directly from Hunter’s website for $5-$10.
  • Flat-Head Screwdriver: For models that don’t use a dedicated key, a small flat-head screwdriver works for turning arc and radius adjustment screws.
  • Pliers: Useful for loosening stubborn adjustment screws or set screws that have corroded over time.
  • Notepad and Marker: If you’re adjusting multiple heads on a large property, jotting down the current settings before making changes will help you revert if needed.
  • Optional: Soil Probe: A soil probe lets you check how deep water is penetrating the soil after a watering cycle, helping you adjust radius settings to ensure water reaches the root zone of your plants.

Note that MP Rotator nozzles and most micro-irrigation heads require no tools at all, as adjustments are made by hand turning the nozzle or head top.

Step-by-Step Guide to Adjusting Hunter Sprinkler Heads

Follow these simple steps to adjust any Hunter sprinkler head, regardless of model. For best results, adjust one head at a time, and test the spray pattern after each adjustment to avoid over-correcting.

  1. Identify your head type and current settings: Check the top of the head for model markings, or compare it to the types outlined earlier. Turn on the sprinkler zone and observe the current spray pattern to note what needs to change (e.g., too narrow an arc, water spraying onto the sidewalk).
  2. Adjust the arc (coverage width) first: Locate the arc adjustment screw or slot on the top of the head. For pop-up spray and rotor heads, insert the Hunter adjustment key or flat-head screwdriver into the slot, and turn it clockwise to decrease the arc (narrower coverage) or counterclockwise to increase it. For MP Rotator nozzles, rotate the top of the nozzle to align the arrow with your desired start and end points for coverage. Most Hunter heads have a minimum arc of 40 degrees and a maximum of 360 degrees.
  3. Adjust the radius (spray distance) next: Locate the radius adjustment screw, usually positioned next to the arc screw on the side of the nozzle. Turn the screw clockwise to shorten the spray distance, or counterclockwise to lengthen it. For MP Rotator nozzles, turn the entire nozzle top clockwise to shorten the radius, or counterclockwise to lengthen it. Aim to set the radius so that the spray reaches just to the edge of the intended coverage area, with slight overlap from adjacent heads for even coverage.
  4. Check for overspray and alignment: Ensure the water is not spraying onto non-landscape areas like sidewalks, driveways, patios, or building foundations. If it is, you can adjust the head’s position by loosening the small set screw on the side of the head (if present), rotating the head to the correct angle, and tightening the set screw back in place.
  5. Test the adjusted pattern: Let the sprinkler zone run for 2-3 full cycles to ensure the new pattern covers the intended area evenly, with no dry spots or overspray. Make small, incremental adjustments as needed—small turns of the adjustment screw make a big difference in spray pattern.
  6. Repeat for all heads on the zone: Work through each head on the zone one by one, testing as you go to ensure consistent coverage across the entire lawn or landscape. If you have multiple zones, repeat the process for each zone to ensure full property coverage.

Brand-Specific Adjustment Tips for Popular Hunter Models

While the general adjustment process is similar across all Hunter heads, each model has unique features that make adjustment faster and more precise. Below are tips for the most popular Hunter sprinkler head models: (See Also:How To Lift Sprinkler Heads)

Hunter Pop-Up Spray Heads (PRO-SPRAY, PGJ, PGP Ultra)

These fixed-spray heads are the most common choice for small residential lawns and planting beds. To adjust the arc, insert the Hunter adjustment key into the slot on the top of the head, marked with “+” and “-” symbols. Turn the key to the “+” mark to increase the arc, or “-” to decrease it. To adjust the radius, locate the small radius adjustment screw on the side of the nozzle, and turn it with a flat-head screwdriver. For PRO-SPRAY models with a built-in check valve, you can also adjust the drain port to fix low-head drainage issues by turning the drain adjustment screw counterclockwise to increase drainage, or clockwise to decrease it.

Hunter Rotor Heads (PGP-04, PGP-06, PGP-12)

Hunter rotor heads are designed for large coverage areas, and feature a more robust adjustment mechanism than pop-up sprays. To adjust the arc, insert the adjustment key into the arc adjustment slot on the top of the head, and turn it to set the desired coverage angle (the slot is marked with degree increments for precision). To adjust the radius, turn the radius adjustment screw on the side of the head: clockwise to shorten the spray distance, counterclockwise to lengthen it. For the high-flow PGP-12 model, you can also adjust the rotation speed using the small speed adjustment screw on the bottom of the head, if the rotor is spinning too fast or slow for your landscape needs.

Hunter MP Rotator Nozzles (MP1000, MP2000, MP3000, MP800)

Hunter’s signature MP Rotator nozzles are the brand’s most water-efficient offering, using up to 30% less water than standard spray nozzles thanks to their low-pressure, multi-stream design. Adjustment is completely tool-free for all MP Rotator models. To adjust the arc, rotate the top of the nozzle to align the arrow indicator with your desired start and end points for coverage. To adjust the radius, turn the entire nozzle top clockwise to shorten the spray distance, or counterclockwise to lengthen it. The MP Rotator’s unique design also makes it less prone to misting and wind drift, so adjustments stay consistent even in breezy conditions.

Hunter Micro-Irrigation Heads (Xeri-Spray, Xeri-Bug)

Micro-irrigation heads are designed for low-volume watering of planting beds, shrubs, and garden areas. For Xeri-Spray micro sprinklers, adjust the arc by turning the top of the head to the desired coverage angle, and adjust the radius by twisting the nozzle to lengthen or shorten the spray stream. For Xeri-Bug drip emitters, you can adjust flow rate by replacing the orifice with a different size (available in 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 GPH options) to match the water needs of different plants.

How to Fix Common Adjustment Issues

Even with proper adjustment, you may encounter occasional issues with your Hunter sprinkler heads. Below are the most common problems and their solutions:

  • Uneven coverage (dry spots or overspray): This is almost always caused by incorrect arc or radius settings, or a tilted head. Re-adjust the arc and radius to ensure 50% overlap between adjacent heads to eliminate dry spots. If the head is tilted, loosen the set screw on the side of the head, straighten it so it is perpendicular to the ground, and tighten the screw back in place.
  • Short spray distance or low flow: First, check if the nozzle is clogged with debris like dirt, sand, or grass clippings. Remove the nozzle, rinse it with water, and reinstall it. If the problem persists, check the radius adjustment screw to ensure it is not turned all the way clockwise (the shortest setting). If multiple heads on the same zone have low flow, you may have a clog in the zone line or a faulty pressure regulator.
  • Head not popping up fully: This is usually caused by debris in the spring mechanism, a worn spring, or a damaged wiper seal. Turn off the water to the zone, remove the head, and clean out any dirt or debris from the internal components. If the spring is broken or the seal is worn, replace the parts or the entire head if it is an older model to restore full function.
  • Water leaking from the base of the head: A leak at the base is almost always caused by a worn O-ring or seal. Turn off the water, remove the head, and replace the O-ring (available at most hardware stores for $1-$2). Reinstall the head and test for leaks. If the leak persists, the body of the head may be cracked, and you will need to replace the entire unit.
  • Misting or wind drift: Misting occurs when water pressure is too high, causing water to atomize and blow away before it reaches the soil. Install a pressure regulator on the zone to reduce pressure to 30-50 PSI (the optimal range for most Hunter heads), or shorten the radius setting to reduce the distance the water travels.

Seasonal Adjustment Best Practices

Sprinkler head adjustments are not a one-time task—your system’s needs change with the seasons, and regular adjustments will keep it running efficiently year-round. Follow these seasonal tips:

  • Spring: After winter, inspect all heads for frost damage, cracks, or clogs from debris. Adjust heads to account for new spring plant growth that may block spray patterns, and increase watering frequency as temperatures rise. Check that all heads are popping up fully and have no leaks before the peak watering season starts.
  • Summer: High temperatures increase evaporation, so shorten the radius of your heads slightly to reduce water loss, and water early in the morning (before 10 a.m.) when wind is low and evaporation is minimal. Adjust for any new landscape changes, such as added garden beds or new plants that have different water needs.
  • Fall: As temperatures cool, reduce watering frequency and adjust heads to account for falling leaves that may block spray patterns. If you have a rain sensor, test it to ensure it is working correctly before the rainy fall season.
  • Winter (Cold Climates): Before the first freeze, blow out your sprinkler system to remove all water from the lines, preventing freeze damage. Inspect all heads for cracks or worn parts, and make any needed repairs before storing the system for winter. If you live in a warm climate with no freeze risk, adjust heads to reduce watering frequency as plant growth slows in cooler months.

How to Maintain Your Hunter Sprinkler System for Long-Term Performance

Regular maintenance will extend the life of your Hunter sprinkler system and reduce the need for frequent adjustments. Follow these simple maintenance steps:

  1. Inspect heads monthly: Walk your property after each watering cycle to check for misalignment, leaks, clogs, or heads that are not popping up fully. Address small issues immediately before they become larger, more expensive problems.
  2. Clean nozzles and filters every 3-6 months: Remove each nozzle and rinse out any debris that may be blocking flow. Most Hunter heads have a small filter at the base of the nozzle that can be cleaned with a soft brush and water.
  3. Check for leaks regularly: A single leaking sprinkler head can waste up to 300 gallons of water per month, and increase your water bill significantly. Inspect the base of each head for damp soil or standing water after the system runs, and replace worn O-rings or seals as needed.
  4. Flush the system annually: Turn off the water to the zone, remove the end cap from the zone line, and turn the zone on for 5-10 minutes to flush out any sediment or debris that has built up in the lines. Replace the cap and turn the zone off when the water runs clear.
  5. Replace worn parts instead of full heads: Most Hunter head components (O-rings, springs, seals, nozzles) are inexpensive and easy to replace. Replacing individual parts is far more cost-effective than replacing the entire head, and reduces waste.

For large commercial systems, schedule a professional inspection every 2-3 years to check for hidden leaks, pressure issues, and component wear that may not be visible during monthly inspections.

Tips for Water Conservation When Adjusting Sprinklers

Properly adjusting your Hunter sprinkler heads is one of the easiest ways to reduce water waste and lower your water bill. Follow these conservation tips to get the most out of your system: (See Also:Can You Adjust Sprinkler Heads)

  • Aim for 50% overlap between adjacent heads: Overlap ensures even coverage and eliminates dry spots, so you don’t have to overwater to compensate for missed areas. Most Hunter heads are designed to work with 50% overlap, so set the radius of each head to reach halfway to the next head.
  • Eliminate all overspray: Adjust heads so that water only lands on landscape areas, not sidewalks, driveways, or bare soil. Overspray not only wastes water, but can also cause erosion and water damage to hardscaping.
  • Use MP Rotator nozzles for high-efficiency watering: If you have older standard spray nozzles, replacing them with Hunter MP Rotators can reduce water use by up to 30%, while still delivering consistent coverage.
  • Water during low-evaporation times: Water early in the morning (between 4 a.m. and 10 a.m.) when temperatures are cool and wind is low, reducing evaporation loss by up to 50% compared to midday watering.
  • Install a rain sensor and smart controller: A rain sensor skips watering cycles during rainfall, while a smart controller adjusts your schedule based on local weather, soil moisture, and plant needs, reducing water use by up to 50%.
  • Check for leaks monthly: A single leaking sprinkler head can waste up to 300 gallons of water per month. Inspect your system after each watering cycle for leaks, and repair them immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to the most common questions about adjusting Hunter sprinkler heads:

How often should I adjust my Hunter sprinkler heads?

You should check and adjust your Hunter sprinkler heads at least once per season (four times per year) to account for changes in weather, plant growth, and system wear. Adjust immediately if you notice dry spots, overspray, or puddles after a watering cycle, or after severe weather events like high winds, heavy rain, or frost.

Can I adjust Hunter sprinkler heads without the adjustment key?

Yes, most Hunter pop-up spray and rotor heads can be adjusted with a small flat-head screwdriver if you don’t have the dedicated adjustment key. MP Rotator nozzles and micro-irrigation heads require no tools at all, as adjustments are made by hand. The official Hunter adjustment key costs $5-$10 and makes adjustments faster for rotor heads with tight slots.

What’s the difference between arc and radius adjustment?

Arc adjustment controls the width of the spray pattern, or how many degrees of a circle the head covers (e.g., 180° for a half-circle, 360° for a full circle). Radius adjustment controls how far the water reaches from the head, or the length of the spray stream. Both work together to ensure even coverage with no dry spots or overspray.

Why is my Hunter sprinkler head only spraying a short distance?

The most common causes are a clogged nozzle, incorrect radius adjustment, or low water pressure. First, remove and rinse the nozzle to clear debris, then turn the radius adjustment screw counterclockwise to increase spray distance. If the problem persists, check zone pressure and clean the system’s main filter if needed.

Will adjusting my Hunter sprinkler heads void the warranty?

No, routine adjustment of arc and radius settings does not void your Hunter warranty, which covers defects in materials and workmanship. Only disassembling the head beyond recommended adjustment steps (e.g., removing internal springs or seals) could risk voiding the warranty, so always follow manufacturer guidelines.
